What is Diet Theory? | Thomas Doubleday | Ecoholics

Thomas A. Doubleday propounded the ‘diet principle’ in his book The True Law of Population. While experimenting with plants, Doubleday found that an excessive application of manure “invariably induces sterility in the plant, and if the doses were increased, disease and death”. Pursuing the inquiry, he found that the same principle was applicable to animals also. On the basis of this, he writes that “whenever a species or genus is endangered in the wake of lack of food, a corresponding effort is invariably made by nature for its preservation and continuance by an increase of fecundity or fertility”.
