Genial video, me encantó.

Spanish is my 2nd language and the only reason why I understand italian and to an extent French is because I took the classes in high school, if it wasn’t for that I wouldn’t be about to pick up on some of the words that differ from what we use in Spanish... Portuguese on the other hand is much more similar to Spanish but you have to get used to the accent and pronunciation change, like final “l” gets pronounced like a “u”, intervocalic t = tch and d = dj , Spanish double rr is j in Portuguese but it’s the same in Puerto Rican Spanish which is the Spanish dialect I speak so there’s no difference there, double ll in Portuguese is “sh”, those are the changes I usually usually use to translate Portuguese into Spanish so I can understand. But Italian and French will use completely different words, so you have to pick up on a lot of different vocabulary words.

Actually we don't have the same root: the Portuguese language was created in the 1050s by monks that had migrated from Occitania (Southern France) to Portugal. It was they who created the Portuguese language as we know it today, and they used their native Occitan to create it. So Portuguese is actually a daughter language of Occitan, while Spanish evolved from the Latin spoken in Hispania. It's the reason why the Portuguese have "-ão" or "-nh" in their language, or say "Pai" and "Mãe" instead of "Padre" and "Madre" (and Catalonian derived from Occitan, too. And at Val de Arán in Catalonia they do speak Occitan).

    • @crownedone200

Pedro Duarte they are created by the same root. Vulgar Latin that’s why there are called Romance languages. But then they started to change as different dialects and eventually into different languages. You should use google to clear that all up for you? Take a look at a language tree picture and you will see these language are on different branches of the same root.

Although they have their own slang, everybody from those countries can understand each other 100%. On the other hand, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, etc. have been separated for over 1,700 years, or in other words, those countries haven't been united under the Roman Empire in that amount of time. So naturally, "vulgar Latin" which is what normal people spoke in everyday life under the empire, changed over time and every region developed its own language. Although people from all these countries can understand each other these days, they have to concentrate extra hard, and it's only when they use the basic forms of their languages that they understand each other 100%. When you start speaking about more complicated topics, that's where the languages differ. These languages have many words that are different, and they even differ in syntax which is why they are separate languages.

These languages might have had some influence from the Romans, but not nearly enough for it to work out the way you're thinking. I think people have the most trouble understanding Portuguese pronunciation as it has some quirks and lots of nasalization. Brazilian Portuguese might be easier to understand since there is perhaps less vowel reduction than in European Portuguese, although it also has some peculiarities like “t” and “d” becoming affricates when preceding “i”, which is the case for most PT-BR speakers.

It would be much easier for a French person to understand all three languages than it would be for any of the other speakers to understand the french person due to the ellision of many sounds in French over the past 1000 years. @@Angelotube5000 Not really. portuguese was the same language as galician, which is another language spoken in Spain. Spanish doesn't exist, I know what it means for americans but here in Europe it doesn't exist. It's called castillan. In Spain they speak Galician, Leonese, Castillan, Catalan, Asturian, Aragonese... There are a lot of latin-based languages. Just forget about political countries and you'll see that the Iberian peninsulta if full of different (but close) cultures. Portugal in that case is just one more language derivated from Latin in the peninsula. Even in political Portugal there are actually two languages (portuguese and mirandese).
Portuguese and Castillan (Spanish if you like more) were not the same languages, all latin languages in the peninsula + french + Italian + romanian (and a lot of regional languages) were the same. In Spain there is an interesting exception : basque. Basque language is the oldest known language that is still spoken. It predates latin, ancient greek and even ancient egyptian (which are all dead languages). We know that because to call an "axe" they use a term that includes the term meaning "stone"...

As a greek who speaks spanish I understood most of it.
I was in Rome a few months ago and I could understand what people were saying and I've never studied Italian.
Also I've had an Argentine friend who's colleague was Portuguese and they were talking to each other in their native language and they were communicating perfectly. I understood them both, even though I didn't speak Portuguese.

Ti assicuro ( vivo in Brasile) che il portoghese - brasiliano è di facile comprensione ed apprendimento. Molto più difficile, soprattutto per la pronuncia più "dura", comunicare con chi parla il portoghese - madre

I don't find Portuguese hard, but I didn't think it was because it was easy. I just figured I understand it because my grandparents spoke it when I was a kid and my mom and I lived with them. My mom also uses Portuguese words a lot.
