Thanks for the love!! I'm a euphonist and there's only two of us in concert- and I'm the only one that plays. Definitely not enough power for such a small yet important section in our band :']
It is hard for me to decide which sounds better oboe or euphonium. The oboe, for me, gives the impression of a haunting melody of distance and loss. The euphonium on the other hand sounds pastoral. Possibly a love song played in the distance hills, telling of promise and longing. Well, that's one persons opinion.
@@jamesfraser4173 I think you may be thinking about Dr. Robert Childs, who is actually David's father. Bob Childs (also a very fine euphonium player) conducted Cory Band from 2000-2012 and David Childs was principal euphonium from 2001-2012. David's uncle is Prof. Nicholas Childs who is conductor of Black Dyke Band. Hope this helps.
But you think wrong. A euphonium may have 3 or 4 valves. The distinction between euphonium and baritone is based on the type of bore. If it is cylindrical (like a trumpet or trombone), it is a baritone, which has a brighter sound. If it is conical (like a tuba), it is a euphonium.
Euphonium is probably the most underestimated instrument, ever. From where I used to live, nobody even knew what it was, until I moved, and I'm the only one in our band, but at least it's recognized here. In LO, they don't know what they're missing. But I always have to explain the difference between the euphonium and baritone... *sigh*
It was an honor to see this man play in person. I saw him in his first American performance and he was just magical! I can't even begin to describe how much he is an inspiration to me as a euphonium player and a performer. And he's such a nice guy too. I can honestly say that David Childs is one of my hero's.
Every single person in my band calls them Baritones, if you ask them what a Euphonium is they'll have no clue. But they can be called Baritones, some sheet music even calls them that
There is no such thing as a "Baritone", it's a made up term to describe a variety of different horns in that same register. The Euphonium, and the british-style "baritone" (Bb saxhorn in all honesty) are the same pitch, can play the same notes, and are both very similar except for one minor detail.... the Euphonium is more conical than most other instruments in this pitch. So, the real difference is just the tone, not the capabilities.
You can learn how to play the notes, but playing like this is a whole new level. You can't even hear him blow a new note, it's flowing from one into another as if it was an entire different instrument
I've grown up listening to the Childs Legacy if you will..and while I'm a Roger Behrend fan, you simply cannot deny the elegance and passion that all of the Childs performers bring to the euphonium.
I'm so familiar with this song that It's strange at first to hear a euphonium instead of an oboe. But in a way it's like hearing a bass singer sing a soprano part in another octave - different, but so beautiful.
I played baritone in grade school through Jr. college, then euphonium through the rest of college and grad school. That was absolutely gorgeous! Loved the beauty and steadiness of the final note!
i am a 7th grader going into 8th and i completely love the euphonium i started at 6th grade and im getting better everyday. My band went to a contest for high schools and we were the first middle school to go to this contest. It was really fun and I hope to be like him one day.
I play this on the oboe..there is something magical about this on the Euphonium..Calming, mellow and enchanting..If I played a bass instrument is would be the Euphonium..really well played!!!
As a fellow euphonium player (in the eighth grade) I absolutely love this! Whenever I practice, I know that as I get farther along I get better. I'm not great at memorizing, but I'll have to do it anyways in marching band next year. (Which I'm excited and anxious for.)
Somehow the sound of the euphonium takes you temporarily back in time. I never thought much of the euphonium but I think it has one of my favourite sounds out of the brass family.
...the epitome of a euphonium player. I've stuck with the euphonium since the fifth grade just to acheive this very tone quality and level of musical ability.
His playing is beautiful! At the time |I wrote this, there were 2172 likes. There were also 4646 dislikes. Where on earth did they come from? Didn't they like his grey suit or something?
the four valved one is called a compensation euphonium....i gives the instrument extra range to play notes lower than an e natural below the staff (if you read low brass music) and provides alternate ways to play notes if needed
Euphoniums are one of the most beautiful instruments as far as sound goes. I can honestly say that I've heard a lot of euphonium players but he beats them. -TJC Euphonium Player
omg i love david childs... for my baritone and euphonium skills he's my role model/hero.... for my piano, trombone,trumpet,ukulele,guitar(electric/acoustic),flute i have different role models/heros
*sniff* Ever since I heard an upperclassman in my school band practice Gabriel's Oboe on euphonium, it's been my favorite brass instrument.. and will probably continue to be my favorite brass instrument for a long time :)
I can't get over this piece of music, i played it with my brass band in a church. It's the most moving melody i have ever heard. You can see the video on my profile but please don't compare it to David lol :)
it's a tuning trigger. some euphoniums have this so that you can tune sharp notes on the fly. some euphonium brands that offer a tuning trigger option are besson, york, meinl weston, and miraphone.
@musicofmoonlight I agree, this version of David Childs was the first one I've had heard of Gabriel's Oboe. and since then I've been surching for the scor end I heard a lot of different versions but this one is still by far the best.
Being a fellow euph player i can speak for myself and atleast 3 of my euph friends and say that he has a great sound but being from the uk or austalia (one of the two) he sounds so much like a french horn!!! He has such a high/ light pretty sound whereas here in the us we focus more on deeper richer sounds.
+Emily Thornton That's really interesting. I'm about to get my hands on a friend's French horn out here in Australia, and this is the first thing I want to play on it. To me the euphonium and the French horn are the only two instruments that have the mellow sweetness for this piece. I've also played the ballsier sound on euphonium, mind you, particularly in the first harmonic on a four-valve instrument - I just tend to prefer the sweeter sound. Not actually a euph player btw - just a singer who's mucked around with a lot of different instruments over the years.
In this video he is playing a York eminence Euphonium, which was a horn he helped design but got bought by Besson a few years back. The mouthpiece is a Wick 4AL. He now plays a BE2052 with his own Alliance mouthpiece.
Euphonium/tenor tuba can be written in either treble or bass clef format. The bass format is more widely used. The treble is mostly used for new students who are switiching from trumpet to the euphonium. Hope that helped any.
Oh yeah!! This song is amazing. I'm actually going to play this for my Church and for Solo Ensemble this year. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps.
i play the bass clarine, and double bass. when i hear a recording of another instrument i love played this well, it makes me think i chose the wrong instrument. beautiful.
Wow, I play this instrument too :] It does make an amazing sound when you learn to play it correctly, like David I don't plan on going on with it professionally, but I'd love to be at least half as good as this guy some day; you can really tell he puts his soul into any music he plays n_n
This is state of the art Euphonium playing :) Good sound in a fabelous horn. What else can we excpect from a 3rd generation Euphonium player. ;) Lovly !!!
His notes are higher than my hopes and dreams.
Starf the funny thing is their not that high
yung trae | I mean you’re kinda right, kinda wrong. C5 is high for euph, but not the highest you can go.
What is the highest note he plays?
@@massmanute its a A3 I think
More like thumbs up if you've ever heard of a Euphonium lol. The Euph truly is the most underrated instrument
I used to play Euph in the Marine Band from 1995-1999, and even practicing 8/hrs a day, never could I ever make a tone and vibrato as Prof. Child’s.
I’m a trombone player and I couldn’t agree more.

An object lesson on how to play a slow melody! Beautiful sound, phrasing, vibrato and overall musicianship. David is an outstanding player!
If I remember rightly, his uncle conducts the band that David plays in.

I'm hoping to play this live at my wedding as my bride walks down the aisle. I love it, but I probably wont be able to hold back the tears...
I don't think any euphonium player who listens and/or plays it would be able to. I know I couldn't.
Beautiful music, its interpretation David Childs was simply magnificent.
What a beautiful sound. I'm Your Fan
Excellent. I love this song on lower registered instruments. Despite how others may feel, this was phenomenal. Excellent tone and form throughout.
I listen to this with the memory of my grandfather - Jim - a beautiful euphonium player.
