Australian outback or Baja Mexico, the same advice applies.
However, we each carry a couple of Combat Applications Tourniquets (C-A-T) and know how to use them along with abdominal pads. Controlling a major bleed is one of the few very time-critical issues that must be managed immediately.

Interested to see a comprehensive video on every thing you would to the bike and gear before going.. for example - im in the process of loctiting, torque checking and replacing all critical bolts with safety wired bolts if possible. And other tips like carrying multiple smaller water bladders so if one leaks youre not screwed.

Even on day trips i have always done that, the thinking goes...
You drink 1 bottle ,the second leaks and on the last trail you fall off one left.

Fair call, in the West (WA) most adv rides are remote, so best to be prepared and know your bike!

Great tip - know your bike! Do servicing yourself where you can, so you know how to fix stuff!

Personally, my single biggest enlightenment I've ever had was in regards to alcohol. Fuck alcohol.
I grew up with mountains everywhere, do stuff many ordinary people would call crazy and irresponsible in summer and winter. Everyone who is a remotely trustworthy person knows that you do not drink alcohol in the mountains. The same is true for any situation where you need to be focused, need to know your body, your limits and have sharp senses to be able to constantly adapt to anything coming your way.
Alcohol is poison, it kills you. It kills your rational, it kills your next day, it kills your fitness. And in the wrong place, it sooner or later kills you.
I am not talking the odd beer with friends at sunset ever so often, that one beer is delicious. Just keep it at that one beer. Or better, keep it clean and don't even start a potentially catastrophic evening by opening your first can of beer.
    Ride safe!

Recovering alcoholic perhaps? Yes alcohol is a good friend but a poor master.

A beer in the evening after a hot and dusty ride is fantastic on a tour ,sometimes two but no more...

Thanks for your efforts Kieth. I'm planning a trip next year on my 950 adv across Oz (West to east), I'm confident the trip will be a success. I've taken plenty of note from your trips.

Tip: A 21" tube will work in a 18" back wheel.

What does "buff"mean in your gear checklist Keith? From the net oxford dictionary example-"the driver was a buff blond named March" I hope you are not suggesting we all change our name to March and dye our hair blond for the trip ?That could create some tension in a remote enviroment😀😀There is also an entry for "lip balm"or was it lipstick.I must admit i am now having some reservations about these desert trips!

Buff is a brand-name neck scarf thing. Microfibre. Keeps the wind off when cold, and I use it also when hot to keep the sun off my neck. Lip balm stops my lips cracking in the wind and sun!

Nice to see another Nerd on the job, I have check lists for everything, no point in forgetting anything important. Makes life simple if you don't have to rack your brain every time you go on a trip, also easy to refine the list see what you didn't actually use and remove it. Great Job Keith, I'm a fan of your videos. 👍

    • @keithjob
      @keithjob  4 месяца назад

Ambulance cover, and gold roadside assist are pretty much mandatory if you're going remote. (RA won't pick you up in the desert but will help out if you break down on a "major" dirt road)

Hey Keith - Love your Videos! Great checklist and I agree with it, but I wanted to know why you carry a spare injector? (I carry a spare fuel pump for the same bike as yours)
