      Chibnal had no respect for the show,
      but lets all not forget Whittaker:
      Her Tweets and all show that she shits
      on 50 Years of Doctor Who;
      just like Chipnel very literally tries to do.
      She literally just landed the Role because
      Chibnal said 'I want her and no other', which is dumb
      enough - but this 'beneath all other Actors'-Situation
      gave her 'Above all other Actors'-Pride.
      Her Tweets show that she disrespects
      the entire, entire Franchise,
      just because the lack of Diversity.
      Dont get me wrong: There WAS a lack of that,
      tbh. But still: Whittaker is on an Egotrip.

      @@slevinchannel7589 Lack of diversity?
      I assume you mean in Classic Who, as I would say since RTD brought it back it has been rather diverse, but now they are taking it too far where they seem to have EVERY race and colour under the sun.
      Atleast with Mickey and Martha, they were more than just their ethnicity snd were interesting, well rounded and likeable characters. These days though it just seems like ticking the checkboxes.
      You deffo get the feeling that they are over compensating for the past, to the extent that it comes across as FORCED and UNNATURAL.
      Diversity is good and all as long as it is done right and with purpose, and that purpose is only for the sake of diversity then it fails to be compelling or interesting which is partly why Chinballs era just doesn't work.

Moffat, already; in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances (the best episodes of series one...) TPWDS I think it’s fixable if another showrunner comes on relatively soon. I know that’s unlikely but I feel like there has to be a way to overturn the numerous inexcusable changes that Chibnal had made. All it’ll take is a few retcons and a new, more escapism based take on the show and it could be back in no time. But, this is the BBC so all that is probably only a dream.

      U are very right, the timeless child arc was utter rubbish. Chibnall is trying to explain why time lords regenerate and the origin...we dont want to know that! One of the most interesting things about the doctor is the lack of knowledge we know about his/her race. But i guess chibnall was running out of ideas.
      Also, isnt the doctor special enough? I mean the doctor is the sworn enemy of the dalek and the cybermen, which are some of the most dangerous species in the universe.
      The doctor is also the person who one the time war! He/She is special enough as it is. Now shes basically the chosen one...utter rubbish.

      The thing is that the only country in the world who's financial contributions to a UN agency are substantial enough to cripple UNIT is the United States, which basically bankrolls most of the UN. It's incredibly easy to lump us in with a Brexit joke because of our wonderful president while actually giving a rational explanation for why UNIT isn't really a thing anymore. Without the US and UK they've had to basically use their remaining resources to relocate the Black Archive and everyone who's left is basically holed up at it's new location guarding it.
      Like it's really easy to just temporarily write UNIT out of the plot for a few seasons while we do the whole fresh new start thing.

      Wasn't Graham the only man on the show? So of course fans will like him, they're used to tuning into a show about a MAN. For 50 years, Doctor Who has been about a HERO, not about the antics of some women - that's a totally different type of show. Star Wars and Ghostbusters did the exact same thing: they took a beloved franchise that's all about heroic MEN, and replaced the characters with women. Not only is it ridiculous, but it's a total insult to the fans.

      And he wrote at least one story for every previous series.

    Actually a lot of people were very wary of Chibnall taking over. He hadn't written a decent Who episode... and still hasn't. He wrote the worst two episodes of Life on Mars. Broadchurch was seriously overrated. He is arguably a better showrunner than writer, which is probably why the BBC trusted him with the series. Then again the BBC is dreadful these days anyway. Personally I would have preferred Toby Whithouse or Neil Gaiman taking over from Moffat. Agree on the Paul McGann series idea.

      @debonaire_nerd 5 лет назад +21

      The thing is, the quality of a writer and a writer's ability to be a competent show runner are two VERY different and unrelated things. Case in point: Moffat. I remember when Moffat was announced as RTD's successor - EVERYONE, myself included, were stoked because of episodes like Blink, Girl In The MIrror and the Empty Child two-parter. It seemed like the most logical thing. For Matt's first series, it was - fantastic series. But, it didn't take long after that for the quality of writing to diminish and for the smugness to exude.
      Moral of the story? While I am not a fan of Chinball's writing, it did nothing to prepare me for his success or failure as a showrunner. Yes, he dropped the ball VERY early in his tenure - but it's unrelated to his ability to write. It's more to do with his overall understanding and connection to the subject matter vs. knowing what the fanbase loves best about the beloved franchise.

    The biggest problem for me was how there was no real conflict within Whittaker's Doctor, unlike the others in the New Who series.
    Eccleston was fresh off the Time War, the impact of his decision had not quite sunken in yet. Over the course of the season, I think he began to realise that he wasn't fully in the right, and by the end, he could not repeat what he had done in the Time War with the Delta Wave.
    Tennant lived with constant regret over what he had done, and in constant fear of himself and what he was capable of doing. the Family of Blood arc saw him disguise himself as human, "being kind" to the Family (as Son of Mine put it). He realised that being alone was not an option, and sought companionship in order to prevent himself relapsing back into the man he was.
    Smith was "the man who forgets", as the Moment had put it. He wanted to run all the time, run away from who he was and run away from where he was going. But as his time went on, he realised that he could not run forever, and that he could not put off the inevitable.
    Capaldi was a Doctor who had come to accept what he had done, and made all that pain a part of himself. His speech in The Zygon Inversion is a perfect example of the kind of Doctor that Capaldi is. He doubted whether or not he was a good man, and tried to ensure that the pain he felt would never be inflicted upon anyone else.
    And as for Whittaker...nothing. No inner conflict, no engaging character arc, nothing. She is a female Doctor for the sake of having a female Doctor, a character so bland, not even the Daleks (who I like to believe bring the best out of the Doctor) could save her.

    • @tjroelsma
      @tjroelsma 5 лет назад +28

      Personally I remember Chibnall mostly for his episodes during the Moffatt periode, because they always stood out.
      Chibnall didn't adhere to the Doctor Who lore and it made his episodes always stand out as "weird" and "not fitting."
      Dr. Who has always been portrayed as a vastly superior being with an enormous knowledge and experience. And that fitted, because as a Timelord he was thousands of years old and therefore had accumulated all that knowledge and experience over that very long time. Chibnall's episodes however had the Doctor run around just as clueless as his companions, only to have a kind of "aha" moment in the end, when he whipped out his Sonic Screwdriver, switch it on and waved it at the problem, instantly solving it. In normal or non-Chibnall episodes the Doctor looked for leads, remembered things from his earlier incarnations and/or vast Timelord knowledge, explained the problem and the solution and then fixed it. The Sonic Screwdriver in "normal" episodes was only a tool to open doors, fix equipment etc. But with Chibnall it wasn't the Doctor who solved the problems, it was the Sonic Screwdriver, acting as a kind of magical wand.
      And Chibnall kept this approach when he became the show runner. Another problem was that already in the Peter Capaldi era of the Doctor, BBC influence pushed the series really hard towards PC and Ultra-Feminism, with the Doctor cringing when some alien said something that wasn't PC (enough) or could be considered offending to someone looking for something to be offended about. The show already began to loose me there, it simply didn't feel like Dr. Who anymore. Gone was the superior Timelord who had a soft spot for Earth and its inhabitants, only to be replaced by an insecure old man who went out of his way to become more and more PC/Ultra-Feminist.
      When Chibnall announced that HIS Doctor would not only be female but HAD to be Jodie Whittaker and that his scripts would focus on a much more PC/Ultra-Feminist Doctor, it told me this new era wasn't going to return to the series roots, but instead it would keep continuing on the path the BBC had chosen. But I was still willing to give Chibnall/Whittaker a chance, so I watched a few episodes, thinking that with every new show runner it took some time to hit their stride and this would be the same.
      But things only got worse. Not only did Chibnall's scripts make even less sense than before, there was no "red-line" and it felt like each episode was a completely stand-alone "one off" story with absolutely nothing to do with the main series. Dr. Who had been turned into the old Twilight Zone series, where it's a series only in name, because no episode has any reference any other episode.
      And it got worse still, because the PC/Ultra-Feminism was enhanced to the point that the Doctor became a sort of PC/Ultra-Feminism spouting Oracle, running cluelessly around the Universe with PC correct companions, which for me killed of the last bit of leniency I was willing to give Chibnall/Whittaker.
      Dr. Who got shunted to a side-track by the BBC during the Capaldi era and suffered for it with steadily declining numbers. For fans of the series it was clear Dr. Who was on a dead end track, running merrily towards the end-stop where it would crash and burn. Under Chibnall there was not only no course correction, but the throttle was cranked open even more, like they didn't care they were running into disaster and actually wanted an even larger crash. Or maybe they thought they could just blast through the end-stop and somehow that would miraculously teleport them into a new realm, where the Chibnall/Whittaker Dr. Who somehow would be a success?

In that I was partially right; the guest writers were better than Chibnall, but none of them were outstandingly good, because what I hadn't predicted was that Chibnall would use NONE of the established Who writers at all! I always had the impression he was arogant but I hadn't anticipated that he would be so arrogant as to turn his back on the entire established team.

    I quit watching series 11 every week after Kerblam but Arachnids was my breaking point. Sci-fi like Doctor Who and Star Trek used to challenge its audiences and present ideas that could lead to the betterment of mankind, not pander to any kind of political or dogmatic ideology. I would be fine with this if and only if there were some kind of character development for the companions.
    I don't even care about the new TARDIS team *at all*. In fact, I would say that I cared more about Rory's dad who appeared in like 2 episodes more so than Ryan or Yaz or Graham even. Moffat at least did some decent characterization for his characters, for better or for worse.

    • @austinforbes7846

      Kerblam! and Demons of the Punjab were hands down the only good episodes of series 11

    • @Croftice1
      @Croftice1 5 лет назад +1

      To be honest the only one I don't really care about is Yaz. She doesn't move anywhere. Her character didn't develope during the whole season. What do we know about her? She's Pakistanian and she's a soon-to-be police officer. That's it? That's not much. Her episode "The demons of Punjab" didn't bring anything new to her character.
      Graham letting go of his "I'm gunna kill that munster for what it did to me wife" was a good thing, we can call that a character developement as there's at least some progress. Same with Ryan accepting "his" gramps. I'm not counting his coming to terms with dad as that was kinda forced by the situation of his dad's life being at risk.
      Did I mention the Doctor? Well she is the Doctor in some situations, she's brilliant, when on the scene. Problem here is, she's not on the scene enough, it's like if it was more about her companions, shouldn't they call it "Companions Who" instead? The writing needs to improve, I hope we'll get better stories, more of the Doctor and less of "companion side stories" in the next season.

    This latest "Doctor" was no more and no less a failed "spin off" attempt at introducing a Time Lady to our screens. She had nothing to do with the Doctor we grew up with. In time, with a good sci-fi writer, a good actor to play the 13th Doctor and the BBC finally getting their act together, we'll have things back as they should be. Whereas Elisabeth Sladen suceeded immeasureably with her spin off, Jodi Whittaker failed miserably with hers.

There was no joy in series 11, no wonder and no excitement. A lack of credible villains and constant lecturing really made me want to rip my eyes out. I now have no hope that this show will recover in the near future, series 12 is in production and I do not believe that Chibnall will learn from anything, there hasn’t been enough time for him to reflect on the damage he has done. And another thing, how, after one year - in fact long before one year can he and the production team be so badly out of ideas that they couldn’t come up with a Christmas special? I've been watching Dr Who since the 1960s. Historically, it consistently proves to be bad for the show when ego driven directors insist upon trying to leave their personal mark on the show. JNT is a classic example and so are Moffat and Chibnall. I have no issue with a female Dr, as of course there was a female time lord in the very first episode. ( Susan) , but poor quality script writing for the sake of ludicrous political correctness will kill off the show with alarming speed, as will the recent insistence upon instant gratification episodes where it is assumed that no-one can concentrate on a story that lasts more than 45 minutes. It's a bit insulting really.

The mere fact that India could exist as a nation and then the two was due to British influence. Otherwise it would be a motley collection of principalities.

    RTD was a bit too fond of silliness and fanservice but when he was on top form he was brilliant. The "soapy" angle of the 2005 series grounded the show in a way that made it accessible to all, with those elements gradually giving way to more of a classic Who feel, albeit very modern and relatable.
    Moffat had a habit of making everything 5x more complicated than it needed to be but he also added a lot of great elements to the mythos and for that I will always be grateful.
    Chibnall turned the Doctor into a Blue Peter presenter (if you watch the series back, Jodie frequently gives a recap of everything that's happened about two thirds of the way in) and the lack of continuity from episode to episode somehow made the word of Who feel smaller. The only episode I enjoyed was Kerblam, and even that was like a middling episode from RTD's run.
    The show needs a major overhaul. Less gloomy dimly lit shots, more action and adventure.

    I didn't really care if Doctor Who was a woman. But this was just so especially mishandled. First the BBC chose to push their agenda.
    Next Jodie stated in an interview that skimmed about two episodes staring David Tennant. She just went. "Okay. I think that I have got it. Be an utter twat, say sorry a lot, have the personality of a cheese sandwich, and cut out all the fun stuff. I can do that. And if anyone doesn't like it that's not my fault."
    Then we have the checkbox type casting. While three companions have worked in Classic Who before they were all just so bland and unlikable with traits, skills, and flaws that were never used. They were basically there to bitch about how the white man kept them down.
    Then they kicked us in the teeth with really badly designed monsters. They are just really bad, bad alien designs. Classic Who used rubber spiders and plastic wrap and they were at least twice better than this clusterf**k
    How? This is a multi-million dollar franchise. Nobody who worked on this season wanted the job. Chinballs didn't want it, Apologetic Jodie didn't want it, the companions didn't want it. BBC has again and again proved that they hate Doctor Who.
    Then they made the Tardis green and made the interior look like s**t. I think that was the biggest betrayal of them all.

    I was happy that finally there was going to be a female Doctor, but thought Whitaker with Chibnall wasn't the best match. I was somewhat reassured by her lead role in 'Trust Me', which showcased what a brilliant lead actor she is. But the Whitaker/Chibnall combo, for me doesn't work. Had Moffat stayed on for 1 more series, that combo, I feel would have been a ground breaking double act. Chibnall could have carried on with series 12 with a) a solid base to build on and b) the backing of most of the fan base.
    There was no need for Chibnall to reinvent the wheel, the basics are there - great actors, great stories, fairly good special effects, great locations and Daleks. A little window dressing and a decent budget and you have Doctor Who. Stick to that formula, and you can't go wrong.
    As for 'Rosa', at times I wasn't sure if I was watching Chibnall's or Disney's Doctor Who. The story was told like a santisied history lesson for 4 year olds. The villain, was little more than a parody with no substance and added little to the plot. The sad thing is, this was one of the better episodes of this run, and I rated it 3/10!
    It is interesting that there was a backlash against Moffat up to a few months ago, and now, at last, many of those fans are realising that Moffat wasn't so bad after all. Moffat, like all of us has faults, but he can create a story, sell it to an international audience and vitally, do so consistently, something that Chibnall hasn't yet achieved. Given time, Chibnall may be able to pull it off, but with Netflix, Apple and other international media power houses fighting for our collective attention, Chibnall's time and luck are rapidly running out.

    I walked away from The Doctor after ONE line spoken by her.... "I've had an UPGRADE!!"..... Uhmm, no. No Doctor. You definitely have NOT. That one line was a slap in the face of long term fans and everything and every character that had come before.... So I turned and left because after all, I was constantly being told that the show was 'not for me' and to 'sit down and be quiet'... I obviously was not alone.

    I can’t wait for the next three showrunners to murder Doctor Who so I can watch the video essays about them too.

      It’s almost like doctor who has never been that great and everyone isn’t “ruining” the show they’re just continuing to write an alright show.

      Doctor Who was ruined on November the 13th, 1963. The show is awful, and I say this as a fan.

    Tom Baker is in his 80s and still one of the funniest men on earth. He could do the part easily and be great. Paul McGann was great in that TV pilot which is not nearly as bad as its reputation and has been brilliantly playing the doctor in audio shows for years. Either would be great.
