I've watched A LOT of videos on YT about people modifying the HF trailer for kayaks. No joke, yours is by far the best executed one I've seen yet. Very nice work! New sub too
Wow.....every video that says the ultimate trailer video should watch this one......this just blew my mind ....now I have a incredible idea for this summer project.... Only change I might make would be a sliding drawer system for the bottom to hold the tackle , stove and light clothing for weekend trips and cut down on the totes . And a winch out front to help pull up the peddling kayaks I'm not getting any younger..... Thank you for the brain storming ideas , you have inspired me to make double wide box unit instead of a stacking unit. 98 lbs before accessories is not a easy lift when your pushing 60...👍 👍 🇨🇦
Bad ass trailer. I just got one from my father in law. Been looking to modify mine. I like the look. I wanted something for camping&kayaking. This is perfect.
This is awesome! Looking to build a kayak/rooftop tent trailer and found the 4x8 HF trailer as a possible starting point - you may have sold me! Great looking build man
Nice job. I'm looking at kayak hauling solutions as I'm considering a fishing kayak but don't want to have to lift it on top of a vehicle. I like your design...the storage box is perfect to haul all kinds of stuff, and the upper rack would be great to haul my paddleboards. The only thing I would do different is use an aluminum trailer since I live very near the ocean and steel rusts here extremely quickly.
Did you bullnose the edges .and also you did a real nice job.hope mine turns out as good.mine is for canoes so the trailer is 17 ft my box will be 6 ft longer 4 x2.thank you for sharing. Jim.
Awesome trailer. I want to get a HF trailer and build a kayak trailer myself. I thought you were from Michigan when I saw the upside down sticker of the UP in the back of you can. Then you said you took a trip from Wisconsin through the UP to Alpena. So cool. I live in Alpena and thought it was cool you mentioned it.
I fish with my buddy on Long Lake. I just have a cheap Kayak but love to get out there. A trailer would make it so much easier to load up and get out there. Thanks for the trailer video. It will help.
Awesome trailer. I do agree with making it a little bit shorter. That extra storage space is definitely useful but having the kayaks up high defeats the purpose of the reason I bought the trailer. Seems like a nice simple idea. I could see myself making one about 8 inches high just to fit all the bulky items like fishing rods, paddles, and life jackets.
Nicely done . We built ours from an old boat trailer. Top opens on it . Only thing is we have to take our kayaks off first . We carry almost all our camping stuff in it plus eight rod holders. Contact me for some pics if you like to . Yours looks awesome.
Awesome job on the kayak trailer build. Very well thought out and executed. I am planning on getting a trailer also and will definitely be using your video as a guide. Thanks for sharing.
I've been wanting a trailer for my two kayaks and the original plan was something much simpler. This blows all other ideas out the water! What I love most about this is the ability to leave my kayak all geared up for next time and still put away. Totally worth it! One question I do have is how tall is rack of the trailer without a kayak on top?
Thank you very much! I'm actually using it right now at a campground but I will measure it when I get home. I actually just lowered it a bit to fit a roof top tent in the garage and I can't remember what the height is.
I've got the same trailer and I've been trying to figure out how to best modify it for hauling three kayaks. This looks like a great example to follow. Nice job!
Nice build. A couple of missing points, I think. Unless I missed it, no mention was made of the build costs - in both time and money. The former may be addressed in one of the build videos, but a cost summary would be useful for comparison with commercial offerings. With a few to several thousand miles traveled, how does this trailer perform in therms of drag and mileage. One would assume that moving the boat and gear from the top, resulted in less drag. Did the added weight of the trailer make any difference in mileage - lost or gained?
Thank you! My cost all in is about $800 I believe. More than just the cost savings for me is the ability to customize the trailer to exactly what works for your specific needs. Its been great so far on the road. Travels very well at highway speeds and hardly feels like it is back there. Fuel efficiency suffers a few mpg when pulling but not significantly for me.
hi there, i really like your trailer you have built from top to bottom. might be the best kayak trailer i have ever seen, can you send me the plans and measuementsof the trailer so i can build just like yours. thank you.
This is easily the best build I have seen so far. It is so clean and modular! Thank you for sharing. Would you please post the link to the cam locks? 🙏🙏🙏
Excellent job on the construction and attention to detail. I thought your video was VERY well done. You should/could offer the plans for your build and folks like me would buy them... $29.95 complete with a list of materials and sources!!! Good deal Lucille!! Best to you... nice job!

Great job on your trailer. I have a Eddyline Caribbean kayak 14’, love it for being so light and easy to paddle. I’ve been looking for a new project to do this fall, looks like I will renovate the HF trailer and build a similar box like yours. Thanks for posting the video, it helps with my building process. I just watch a bunch of build videos then start making my plans. Wish you lots of great fishing trips tight lines.
Hi John, thanks for watching and subscribing! The box is made of 1/2 plywood and 2x4's with stainless L brackets for added support. It's solid enough for me to walk on. The box itself came out to over 300 lbs and actually makes the trailer ride really nice.
Thank you! I have the Yakima big stack vertical arms that allow the smaller kayaks to be loaded on their edge. I put those up top on the crossbars. My large angling kayak goes right on top of the box.
Thank you for very much! It's about 4 sheets of plywood and nut exactly sure about the 2x4s. Probably around 12 depending on how strong and heavy you want the box to be.

The piano hing screws to the bottom of the main box. So it is between the box and the trailer frame. Hope that makes sense. Have fun with the build!
