  • This is a removable Kayak Rack that I built for my utility trailer. It holds 8 kayaks using the trailer floor to hold 2. This is an easy build and doesn’t require special tools or a welder. You can build this with a circular saw, jig saw, hacksaw, drill and drill bits, and wood screws. It will make hauling the kayaks a lot easier with the group and we won’t have to take so many trucks to the pick up location. Thanks for watching!!

THANKS FOR POSTING! I HAVE A SIMILAR TRAILER AND AM GOING TO COPY WHAT YOU DID EXCEPT JUST A TAD TALLER SO I CAN PUT 2 LONGER CANOES ON TOP AND OVER THE LIFT GATE.

Thank you! I just got a utility trailer that will be the canoe/kayak trailer 90 %of the time. I a.so looked at about a 1000 designs on the internet, and once I saw your video, came away with the idea, this is the answer! Thank you again

We're new to kayaking and just bought a 5x8 utility trailer. Watched your video and I will be making this today for our 10 footers. Love the idea! Thanks

Nice job well planned. I also use my utility (homemade) 6 x 10 trailer that has wood sides, similar idea, different materials. I made a rack specifically for my 4 12 foot Old Towns from discarded 1/2 inch iron water pipe and a base of two deck boards attached to slots in the wood sides of trailer and padded with those pool noodles. I carry mine on their sides and another yak and my specially made rack for my canoe can fit on top of the racks. I can also "lock" my yaks in the frame rack. My only drawback is it's uncomfortably wide to pull with our VW, so use a trucks usually.

Nice project, thanks for posting the video on your build, it gave me some ideas for a project and I learned a few things. Your idea of using a jack to stabilize the ends of long lumber on a miter saw is another good idea. I do something similar.
I am often setting up my miter saw and other tools in different places, so I use a spare scissor jack to make a level surface. A used scissor jack from an old car works fine and you can find them easily. If the jack is not stable enough, just screw them down to a wider piece of wood as a base plate.
Once I discovered this (from first using the jack out of my own car during a frustrating project!) I found they come in pretty handy now and then. I used them also with some wood blocks to level up some kitchen cabinets when I installed them. Since they are raised and lowered by turning the screw, you can get pretty fine control of the height, and raise/lower things to just the right level.

Good video thanks for sharing. We are trying to make a trailer ourselves. Not sure which way to go yet. I have a smaller boat trailer and one like this. Trying to get it all figured out. God bless.

I bought the 6x10 version of this trailer yesterday, didn't leave with it because it had a power on ground issue. Making them fix it before I pick it up.

If you put outrigger legs under the 2x8's, you could use it to store your kayaks after taking them off the trailer.

Clayton Johnson That’s actually a great idea, I have it hanging under my deck now but I believe I’m gonna follow your advice and add those to it 👍🏻.

That's a great design, exactly what I was looking for. Not sure the two horizontal 2x4's are needed since the 4x4 brackets are bolted to the trailer. I'm a fan of wing nuts just in case I don't have tools handy. Thanks for the ideas!

He did that so he can put two more kayaks on them. I might do the same, and stain the wood to match my trailer.

I'm going build a free standing one that acts like a sled that I can slide on and off off the trailer and store with kayaks in the garage.

Loved your design but the pipe I got from the fence section is pretty flimsy. I would not trust it on the highway. I will see if I can find some other pipes to use. Also 14” is not enough clearance between the pipes layers. I may have to scrap my 4x4 and start over

Chris Steinbacher It’s a 6x10 and we’ve put from 8ft to 12ft kayaks on it so far. It works great. We took a 5hr road trip one way with it loaded with yaks and had no issues at all!

swat612 I got them at Lowe’s on the aisle that has the eye bolts and all that. They were on the bottom shelf. At the time it was the biggest ones they had.

What brand box do you have on the front of your trailer?

    • @PoposWoodworks

I can remember the brand, but it was the truck storage box that Walmart sells. At the time it costed around $40. They keep them near the automotive oil section

Why would a person need 8 kayaks? I would have skipped the eyebolts and just gone with a single hole in the bottom of the pipe for a tie-down hook. Makes it easier to load kayaks from the side without the eyebolts.

Family, friends,, group outing, boy/girl scouts - any of a dozen reasons for 8 yaks. My homemade removeable yak conversion holds 4 riding on their sides, plus a fifth and a canoe.

    • @PoposWoodworks
      @PoposWoodworks  3 года назад +1

When we go as a group we drop the yaks off at our starting point. Then drive my truck to the loading point. When done you can get all of the yaks back to the starting point without having to drive 4 trucks. The people that can’t fit in the truck ride in the bed.
Just saves a little time and not having to shuffle vehicles so much.

Someone could use ratchet straps instead of the U bolts to avoid scratches and still be able to side load and the wood could use some waterproofing.
