D.I.Y: How We Built a Kayak Trailer From a Standard Utility Trailer
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 фев 2022
- Since we need something to transport our heavy fleet of kayaks, we decided to build our own kayak trailer from a utility trailer. The best thing about this is that it can convert back to a utility trailer and vice versa. This kayak trailer can also convert to carry from 2 to at least 6 kayaks.

All around great job! It's nice to see people taking pride in their work. The blacked out rims are a nice touch.
Thank you so much! We're glad you like the blackout rim!
This channel deserves more subs..great info!
Nice result. Pro tip for Joe: If you weld with a hood, you don't have to close your eyes and can see wtf you're doing.
🤣 dudes wild. Did a heck of a job though!
just awesome guys ! Well done.
Thanks a ton Wayne! 😁👍
Great build. I have a similar trailer and also several Crescent kayaks, as well as a canoe. I was planning to build something very similar. Thanks for the ideas. Keep up the great content!
Hey Brad! That's awesome! We love our Crescents! Hopefully, we made your build a little bit easier. We might have made the spaces between the racks just a tiny bit smaller to give it a lower profile, but is nice and easy to slide them in this way. Best of luck on your build!
Very nice trailer, excellent mods and a great job or video!
Thank you so much! We are glad to hear that you liked it!
Ahh great vid! Love the intro and the fun that you brought to the project!
Thank you so much! We did it best to keep it entertaining 😎👍
Good job besties! I love it!
Thank you!!!!!! Next time you are in town, we need to take this bad boy out!
Best one I’ve seen so far hands down. Love the use of the trailer still
Thank you so much! It is really nice having the benefits of 2 trailers in one
Your design and execution is great! Thanks for sharing this with us!
Thank you so much! It has worked out really well for us. The only thing I might add is a single beam between the 2 racks for even more rigidity. It's never been an issue, but why not overengineer it all the way . 🤣
Thank you for the great video! Out to the garage I go!
You're welcome! Good luck with the trailer 😊
Wow!!! Definitely what I was looking for!!!
Glad we could help! 😎👍
Wow great job!!
Thank you! ❤️
You guys are awesome!

Thanks man!! :)
Dudes! That thing is great. Well thought out. I am going to make one just like yours.
Thanks man! It's a beast! We love it! Let us know if you need any info about it
Looks awesome
Thank you Jesse! We are really enjoying it.
Great video. I am going to do something like this myself. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! Hopefully we could help with some inspiration. Good luck on the build!
Hahahaha! Love the intro!!
Thanks man! Thought it might be a bit of a risk starting off so goofy, but we wanna make the videos funny. Glad ya enjoyed it! 😁👍
Great build!!! Can you share the type of materials you guys you for the rack ?
Thank you so much! The rack is made out of 1 1/2 square. I believe it is 12 guage. :)
Could add a tongue box to store floatation vests and other kayaking necessities like rope, anchors (for fishing), sunscreen, etc.
It is a work in progress ☺️
we love your videos guys
Thank you!
GREAT job guys.....
Thanks Joe! 😎👍
Well done. Going g to make one for myself.
Thank you! Best of luck on your build!
Great job! Thanks for sharing this excellent video. When the kayak is fully loaded, do you add extra brake lights or safety indicators?
Thank you so much! Since the kayaks barely stick out past the end of the trailer, we haven't felt the need to add anything extra but now that you mention it, it probably wouldn't hurt to at least put a flag or something similar on the back.
Good build!
Thanks man! It's a beast! 💪
Thanks for your time.
Thanks for watching! 😎👍
We love what you make. Let us be connect
Thank you! 👍
@@LiveThatAdventure Hope to see you on our Chanel. think we have some adventure for you 😜
Great video
Thank you so much!
I would like to see how you made the racks removable. What did you use on the frame of the trailer to take the racks off?
Hey man! Feel free to email us at livethatadventurelife@gmail.com and we would be happy to send you pictures!
Am I the only one that noticed Joe is welding without a mask 😂. That's insane 😲. I like Joe 😂
Joe's a wild man for sure! But man does that dude know how to weld!
Great build. Just one safety point here. Your fabricator did not wear a welding helmet in your video… NEVER, EVER do that. You will be blinded by the acr flash of welding. So if anyone is thinking of welding their own… this fabricator is closing his eye when he strikes the arc and welds, and that is a very, very dangerous method of welding. Although you can definetly weld your own rack with a little practice, just buy a helmet, Harbor freight, about thirty bucks.
@Jus Smith What the heck? Name calling for promoting safety? Welding Blindness is no joke, It certainly does not call for hatred and name calling. Your slander of my name is also indicative of a childish and hateful demeanor.
To add to that od say your eye sight is worth more than 30 bucks it's worth it
Quality video
Thank you! :)
Can you make a video showing how you tie down the kayaks on that trailer
That's a great idea! We will definitely do that. 😁
Love the trailer, great video too!
Thank you so much! It's a beast! 😁
I got the yacks. Hung them both up from the ceiling in my garage. That was yesterday. Today Its Snowing Probably will not get them out till summer.
Congrats on the yaks. Su la about the weather. Hope ya get to enjoy them soon!
am thinking of doing a similar build. Can you tell me what size square tubing you used? Thanks
Hey Tom! Best of luck on the build! We used 1 1/2 inch square tubing
Great video, and this exactly what I had in mind to build. Your video has made my planning much easier. Only question I have and would like to see closer detail on is where and how the rack connects to the trailer. It looks like a slightly larger square tube welded to the trailer. Anyway we can connect so you could send a couple of pictures? Email, FB?
Hey Charles, you can find us on Facebook @ That Adventure Life or Instagram @thatadventurelife_offcial. We have to link to our social media in the description. You can connect with us from there. 😄
Awesome kayak trailer build!! Will be looking to build the same one! Question though, I don’t think the size was ever mentioned, what size trailer did you go with from Tractor Supply?
Oops sorry about that! We went with the 5x8. Good luck on your build!
What size trailer did you use from Tractor Supply?
We went with the 5x8
Similar to ours!! Y’all shld see the awesome paddle storage he built cause I hated breaking down my paddle!!
that's awesome! do you have any pictures of it anywhere?
What size steel did you use
We used 1 1/2 inch square
Do know how thick the 1 1/2 inch steel is
@@970dtn I believe it might be 12 guage. I'm not 100% sure though. My fabricator bought it.
You need to box in the bottom to hold paddles, PFDs etc
@@joshwithe7468 we have definitely considered it. The only bummer is we couldn't use it as a utility trailer anymore unless we came up with a quick disconnect
@LiveThatAdventure I have a free Yakima rocket box on the bottom of my kayak trailer, it holds a ton of paddles and gear and could even be locked
@@joshwithe7468 that sounds pretty awesome! I wonder if you can do a quick disconnect to get it in and out
What size tubing is the rack was it made out of?
It is 1.5 inch square tubing
So how much did it cost?
Great video! What size square tubing did you use??
@@BearOffRoad thank you! We ended up going with 1 1/2 inch square tubing. Best of luck if you end up building your own! 😎👍
@@LiveThatAdventure awesome thank you. How did you make the removable piece??
@@BearOffRoad I wish there was a way to send pictures on here. do you have Instagram? Id be happy to send you shots of it
@@LiveThatAdventurejust sent you a message.
any photos of how the rack attaches to the main trailer body? is it pinned?
Hey Jeff! I have actually been working on an article about the build. Id be happy to send you a picture of it!
Would love to see the article with pictures of the build. Can you send the link?
Whats the size of this trailer??
The trailer is 5x8 😊
Did she say 23 inch tire? The 5 X 8 I see at Tractor Supply has 12 inch tires.
This is true and I think that was my fault. They are called 12 inch tires, but I measured them the same way I do my jeep tires which are 32 inches tall.
@@LiveThatAdventure
Thanks. This is really helping me make up my mind on which trailer to buy.
@@patrickheath5011 Thats awesome! I will say that we really love ours. I think the only thing I would change is I might add a bar from the front rack to the back rack for even more stability. There has never been any issue. I just like overbuilding things :)
12 inch inner diameter of the tire (12" wheel). This is the trailer I bought too. I haven't built the kayak rack for it yet but someone shared this video with me so I'm hoping to do something similar to what they did here.
牛逼了😂
It’s not really DIY if you had a professional fabricator make the rack.
We did come up with the design, and anyone that has a welder and knows how to use it could definitely make this on their own. Nothing wrong with a lil outside help. 😎
From the title, I was hoping for some actual DIY ideas... as in do it YOURSELF. As opposed to hiring a welder, using retail kayak racks.
Will if you have welding skills you can definitely do it yourself. You can also use pipe insulation foam on the bars and just strap the kayak to that. Boom.... Diy
Cool
