- Abendlied by Josef Rheinberger
Sung by The Gesualdo Six
Audio by Josh Cooter
Now it’s your turn! For our first #singwithG6, we have chosen one of our favourite pieces, a sacred motet by Josef Rheinberger which the composer first penned in 1855 at the age of 15. It is perhaps his most famous choral work, which looks backward to the great sacred music of the Renaissance.

Bleib bei uns,
denn es will Abend werden,
und der Tag hat sich geneiget.
Bide with us,
for evening shadows darken,
and the day will soon be over.
Resta con noi,
poiché viene la sera,
e il giorno volge al termine.

Performed this piece in my high school choir, such a beautiful piece. I have never heard it done by an all men's vocal group before, absolutely stellar gentleman!
So schön, ich denke dabei an mein lieben, die nicht mehr bei uns sind 😢
This is definitely on my “replay thousand times” list!
The Gesualdo Six surpasses the rationality of the simplicity of the human being.
Master voices !!!!!
hummm...
Loved seeing the score during this video. More like this please.
That’s the plan, Robyn... watch this space!
@@thegesualdosix Thank you! As an amateur it is such a fun and joy to try to sing 'with you'.
This song really brought me close to tears. It's wonderful to see my mothertongue sang in this precious and powerful way. Love
Elegantly sublime with perfect harmony - especially love the counter tenors. Thanks for sharing!
Brillantissime!!
Precioso. Muchísimas gracias.
Magistral, sutil, excelso y puro. Cuanta magia musical. Gracias, gracias, gracias.
Stunning! Such clarity and musicality! Thank you.
Magnifique les amis !
What a joy to be able to enjoy your singing, while waiting to hear you live in London tonight !
It's like lissening to angels singing in heaven ! Thanks
Lovely !
As an amateur bass in a local choir, it was very instructive to read the music and sing-along with the bass. More like this please, as I would love to sing this kind of music, but I’m not good enough. How lucky you all are to sing at this quality !
Right with you, mate
They even have two bass voices. So whatever your vocal range, you can have it high or low. Pretty low, indeed. 🙂
Really looking forward to hearing you guys on Live from London!
We can’t wait either!
Ein absoluter Wahnsinn - wunderschön!!💝
I love this piece, and this version is very good - especially considering the parts had to be recorded separately and at different times. I definitely prefer it in the lower key as well, although I find it more commonly in a higher key - probably because of those D flats in the bass 2 part! I especially like the countertenor 2 singing here, I replayed it a few times just to hear his part - very good indeed, and of course the D flats in the bass 2 part were remarkable.
As a 2d bass who had no trouble with D-flats, I was impressed with how exquisitely they were negotiated here. A beautifully and sensitivity sung piece but that is, of course, to be expected from this excellent group. Thanks!
This is both lovely and fulfilling to listen along and to actually sing along one of the parts for the pleasure of it. Being quite familiar with the material makes it even more enjoyable to deal with and to appreciate your art!
i love the blending!!! love you all men!
Wunderschön - ich liebe dieses Stück.
The band version is really good as well. My conductor is making me a cellist in an orchestra read E flat major!
Really exquisite. Thank you all!
Have downloaded the score and have been singing along; top alto line at the moment. Going for the second alto as well :) This is brilliant thank you. Have so missed singing during the lock down so I'm searching for on line experiences. So far Opera North have come up trumps with a 4 week course via Zoom which has been most enjoyable. Looking forward to more :)
Self-Isolating Choir are singing super stuff on RUclips, Google them!
Den tiefen Ton schaffe ich auch ohne Probleme ...
Just glorious. What a bunch :) THANK YOU THANK YOU
Superb!!
I like this style video. Thanks.
Please do more of these!
Just sublime :)
I almost forgot to watch this video today :)
Seriously. I watch this several times a week. Sometimes, everyday too. :-)
Lindíssimo!
❤❤❤
😇
thank you
Beautiful

Great as ever. When are you fellows doing something in the North of England? It feels like the Land of No Choirs up here.
Impressive performance with interesting arrangement!
It might be more better if it is arranged with D or Es because the low bass seems very tight.
Not sure I like the lower key but great performance anyway. Looking forward to watching your performance Live fron London. Yeah, I know, late to the party etc. :)
¡B R A V O!
Que baixo!!!
👍
Wow o bass you! excellent group. you're better than the english group, not wanting to name names! Rheinberger Brahms wow
Was ist das für eine Tonart ?
Des-Dur
Lovely Arrangement!! Did you guys transpose it yourself or can the AATTBB be obtained online?(Specifically this Db Major version)
This is very good singing and very good musicality, where do you come from?
Can you guys please do When David Heard in this format?
Herrliches Des Dur ....und ein schönes brummiges Des am Ende .
It would be cool to mute certain voice parts so that we could sing the part. Sorry, my choral nerd is coming out.
That's a feature we hope to showcase soon... watch this space!
A nice rendition of course, but quite a few striking differences in pronunciation and the occasional vowels that don't match keep this from becoming one of my favourites.
Thanks for your feedback, Josse. It’s certainly an interesting process, recording in our separate homes and stitching together afterwards - not being able to work as an ensemble and shape words together. Live, in-person music making is definitely our preferred way of working!
@@thegesualdosix I find it remarkably well matched and blended, especially considering none of you are in the same room. Having directed and stitched together several of these myself (at a much more amateur level!) I know how difficult the process is. Having said that, you make it look and sound easy and I didn’t detect any major differences, but I’m not a German speaker!
Precioso. Muchísimas gracias.
