Thank you, my point exactly. I'm getting attacked whenever I say this season SUCKED cuz people think I just want dragon action. HELL NO! I loved GOT and it didn't have dragon action till way later, but in that series, missing a convo was serious cuz you'd miss the hints and the reasons behind the characters actions. In this one, I could spend the whole episode scrolling on my phone and it wouldn't matter or affect my experience for the next one.

I think the truth of whether there was network involvemet or whether it was all Condal's shenanigans lies somewhere in the middle. They definitely told him to connect it to the broader narrative... but I find that the decision to make Daemon change his mind because he saw the visions of the future fits with the previous pattern of how they write the characters.
I had this impression when I watched season 1: it's like they are scared of giving characters agency, ambitions and having them get their hands dirty. Rhaenyra can't fight for the throne because she sees it as her birthright - no, it has to be connected to a broader "greater good." No, Alicent can't want to put her son on the throne because she feels she is owed that for her suffering - she has to do that because she misunderstood Viserys' delirious yapping. No, Aemond can't k*ll Luke because he believes he is owed revenge - it has to be an accident NOO VHAGAR NO. And it would be one thing if some HBO peepaw said: hey, connect this entire thing to the broader narrative; entirely another to only make Daemon change his mind because there's Greater Good(TM) at stake... as opposed to him willingly subordinating himself to Rhaenyra because he made peace with the fact that he was never chosen by Viserys.
I also find that Condal has a tendency to try and please everyone. So, they included the vision of Daenerys, but when there was backlash because it doesn't fit the broader narrative he is inevitably constrained by, he immediately went: well, it doesn't have to mean anything, maybe the prophecy is bad, you never know! When people were asking him about replacing Nettles with Rhaena, he sort of winked and said "well you have to wait to find outif this is the case :D" (as opposed to just being honest and saying that yeah, we cut Netty). I don't think that's a good mindset to have. He isn't really acting like a writer for the show, but a marketer; and how much of that is the network pushing him, we can't know. But, trying to please everyone will make him get pulled in all those different directions and create more inconsistencies in characters, lore and the eventual conclusion. He has to write with an audience in mind, yes, but becoming a slave to their whims won't benefit anyone in the long run.

That’s an area that could be salvageable or better contextualized in season 3 - maybe. The prophecy/visions fundamentally change the themes and substance to Daemon and Helaena especially. Alicent could still have something interesting exploring guilt and betraying her own sons. Her character isn’t handcuffed to a development like prophecy, so rehabbing her arc or making it more compelling isn’t impossible at all. Daemon and Helaena feel stuck to this one element and I don’t know how they create more human-like conflict or nuance for either of them moving forward, because they have no agency now.

U hit the nail on the head that they r trying to follow the show game of thrones instead of following the book. However I will blame the writers for not even following their own previous season. To me this season failed because it missed the entire theme as to y the dance of dragons happened in the first place.
The whole point of the dance was that neither side of the family factions were entirely good or bad and how an entire family destroyed themselves over the greed over the iron throne. While season 1 was a somewhat balance show…..this season took that balanced and just pivoted to one side of the family or to one character named rhaenyra.
Excluding characters, changing characters, and changing events was all done for one character to make one side look good. Even though the writers had 8 episodes their is till no excuse for changing characters from how they were from season 2 to season 1……

They weren't even consistent within the same season. Aemond told larys to fetch otto because he was loyal to family. He says this after just burning his brother and right before threatening to murder his sister? Compare that to last season, when aemond repeatedly said he would do his duty and he helped crown aegon when he wanted to be king. Idk aemond just went off the deep end. Helena told alicent she doesnt want to be closer to the smallfolk, she doesnt know them. Then episodes later she says why should she be sad when smallfolk suffer more of their children to die, the same smallfolk she just said she doesnt want to know or be closer to?

I still enjoyed season two, albeit with the caveat that we were getting short-changed by two episodes, thanks to HBO, although I do also have fears that HOTD is heading in the same generic, mass-appeal direction that GOT shifted into in it's latter seasons.
Season three has a chance to turn things around for me, but it had better.
Ultimately, general audiences have to take responsibility - THEY dictate what studios put out, and the niche (that's neesh, for Americans) fanbases suffer as a result.
So it will always go until currency and capitalism dies the death it deserves.

  • @steelpookie7597

I’m with you on the fact that studio execs tend to screw up a good novel based story. But the writers are still a significant part of the problem. Even with only 8 episodes and a smaller budget, which would affect battle sequences, the writers failed to engage the audience with any political intrigue. No CGI needed for that nor do we need 10 episodes to make that happen. But instead we waste time with Daemon in a fever dream state and setting up multiple cute meets between Rhey & Alice. Maybe mgmt wanted the ladies to share more screen time but I can’t believe they wanted their primary action guy stuck in dream world or Cole to be out of action and depressed for most of the season. This all smells of poor writing and a delaying tactic. I also don’t believe 2 more episodes would have fixed this. Episode 9 would have still been putting pieces into place before any type of action would have happened.
Another problem which I also see coming in the new series in development, is the way they market the show. The marketing is always heavy on the action and the dragons flying and burning things along with heads being removed. You can’t advertise your show like that and then wonder why fans are disappointed.

The pacing was strange but I'm willing to cut that a little slack. My biggest issue is the focus on Alicent and Rhaenyra given that we are needing more from these secondary characters especially in the latter half of the season. The addition of Game of Thrones connections also caused me to cringe.

I mean... we waited 2 years for an incomplete season. Fans are pissed and I don't blame them. As far as Helena, I actually thought she was one of the best parts of season 2. Season 1 was meant to be subtle with her saying things that matter.
But by the time season 1 ends, most fans were paying close attention to her and they already figured out what she was doing. Structurally, it makes sense to make it bigger and more impactful in season 2. The cat was out of the bag and fans were already paying close attention to her and her lines after season 1. I think Helena's trajectory was actually logical.

I’m reading about Maegor the Cruel and I don’t consider him to be that bad. His personality is quite similar to Daemon. Maesters slandered them to be worse than how they really were. I don’t see Daemon completely responsible for Blood & Cheese. In the book or TV, he never asked for Jaehaerys’ head. In the book, raven had a message saying a son for a son. The assassins don’t know who is who. The target was botched.
Then for TV, Daemon clearly states to target Aemond and it’s open ended if he ever agreed having Jaehaerys killed because the scene is cut after Blood asked what happens if Aemond isn’t there? And in a way, Rhaenyra is sorta responsible for Jaehaerys’ death when she told the council she wanted Aemond and Daemon only recruited B&C to avenge for his wife’s son.
Okay, Daemon did kill his wife, although in the book, that’s not clearly stated. He was in the Stepstones when Rhea Royce had her accident. Maegor had 6 wives and killed two of them. I like what I’m reading from Maegor. He’s not Homelander bad where he’s unredeemable. If we can’t get a series about Aegon, give us one of Maegor. We get Balerion either way and Visenya.
House of the Dragon S3 better deliver. It’s been 18 episodes into the series and we’re supposed to be at war already and we’ve only seen two battles: Stepstones and Rook’s Rest. The former isn’t part of the Dance. Is it called the Dance because they want to dance around a war and not have one? Rhaenyra and Alicent needs to start doing some evil Cersei shit. Stop trying to make them friends again. Fight!
So ridiculous to have Alicent not have Rhaenyra captured or vice-versa. Stop the whitewashing for these female characters and make them scheme. Writers don’t want to make Rhaenyra crueler than she is. If she’s little miss perfect, the Storming of the Dragon Pit is not going to make sense. If HOT D S3 disappoints, the IP should be on life support.
Some Reddit posts compared ASOIAF to Star Wars.
    HOT D S1 = The Force Awakens
    HOT D S2 = The Last Jedi
Now I don’t think HOT D is comparable to the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. But I do think the fandom is headed into that toxic fandom. I read how House of the Dragon is so boring and nothing is really happening. How they only tune in for the dragons. If S3 disappoints, then put to rest on anything GRRM related. HBO keeps screwing up. Eventually, the lore will get stale and overhated like Star Wars currently is.

Writers don’t want to make Rhaenyra crueler than she is. If she’s little miss perfect, the Storming of the Dragon Pit is not going to make sense. - Exactly. When they make changes, the ripples might start out small, but they get larger as the story progresses. Why would the smallfolk revolt now? They havent even established alicent or helena as caring about the smallfolk, so why would their departures mean anything? Conversely they had rhaenyra sending food(to help with the blockade she caused, but i digress)

If I was GRRM I would just laugh at the Target t-shirts. That kind of seems like a dumb thing to get your feelings hurt over. There's people dying and starving in Africa. If GRRM's biggest problem is dragons having 4 legs on t-shirts, I'd say he's living a pretty gentle life.

I still think that season 2 was decent, it struggled with bad pacing and was dragged with not enough payoff, but there are also a lot of great moments and scenes in the season, the writing was bad sometimes but not most times, but yes I do agree if they make the prophecy the biggest thing in the future seasons of the show I will be frustrated, but as of now I think that If they don’t do that as much, even if it’s just a little that’s fine, then next season will be fantastic.

Let's not be afraid to address the elephant in the room: that HBO/Discovery decided to punish the writers & actors for DARING to strike. 😤🤬 SMH
Because after the success of the 1st season of HotD, there was ZERO reason to pull back & cut 2 episodes off of the 2nd season. This is their cash cow, sooo... make it make sense. Well the execs were pissed off that their union employees had the *audacity* to revolt against their obscene greed... so now here we are.
But what were the writers/actors supposed to do?!
It was really disgusting what the studios were demanding of all of them. The studios wanted to force actors to have themselves "screened" by computers, so that their likeness could be AI generated into *any* production they created in the future, AND, none of those actors would have been allowed to have a say in HOW their likeness got used.... nor would they be further compensated when it WAS used! That is absolutely effing INSANE.
They really wanted to get away with paying most of their background extras for only ONE day's worth of work to get their likenesses scanned, and then... never have to use them, or pay them, ever again.
And this was on top of them already not paying these people enough money to support their families or keep roofs over their heads! So of COURSE the actors revolted. I would have too! You ain't gonna use my likeness in the background of some orgy scene in a movie, w/out getting my permission to do it, OR, without f*cking paying me for it, ummm... WTF?!
And omg it was always sooo painful listening to the (mostly) ignorant public's discourse about the situation, too. 🙄🤡 Everybody was so f*cking misinformed. Bunch of effing clowns I swear...
It was always so difficult trying to explain to people that just because somebody is an actor - even in a popular show, like GoT or Stranger Things - that it doesn't automatically mean they are making Tom Cruise's salary. lol People would see "actor" or "Hollywood writer"... and automatically assume that everybody was a millionaire, and shouldn't have anything to complain about. But there are tons & tons of low wage, commercial, part time & background actors (and writers), working in Hollywood, who are a vital part of any production, and yet ... were having a really hard time keeping roofs over their heads ffs.
But you couldn't tell the public sh*t. 🤦🏻‍♀️😩 Capitalists
Everybody wanted the actors & writers to just bend over for the studio, and let 'em %#@$☆ all of them without any lube, and then THANK them for the ramming afterwards. But nahhh... I'm GLAD that the actors & writers didn't put up with that sh*t.
However, it's pretty clear that the studios have punished certain productions because of the strike. It becomes obvious, when you take a look around, and see what has happened to a lot of our favorite shows, since the actors/writers came back to work.
The level of greed at the top of every Hollywood studio, will NEVER be satiated. Enough is NEVER enough, when it comes to profits! They would kill everything that we love, if it meant they could make a nickel more in profit for their portfolios/shareholders
If they can't keep their employees under their boot heels... they'll hit 'em where it hurts most, and destroy all of their hard work instead. And then they'll sit back & let the ignorant public blame the writers, directors, showrunners, and everybody else EXCEPT them, for why their favorite show has fallen apart. They're counting on it being like that in fact... because they have punished other creatives who worked for them just like that before, MANY times, in the past.
I'm not saying everything that the writers come up with is perfect (Sarah Hess should probably be asked to step down truthfully), however... the public doesn't realize how many of these kinds of issues originated at the very top. 😞💔 They've killed so many beloved & genuinely good productions in the past, already.

They destroyed daemons agency his tactis calculating cunning strategist isnt in the show instead his actions are made to look foolish, evil, weak, without calculations its a mistake ? One thing i know of daemon from fire and blood is that DAEMON IS A MAN OF WAR WORTHY OF HIS NAME ITS A REASON WHY THERE IS ONLY ONE TARGARYEN NAMED DAEMON IN ALL OF THE LINE... and why he is my favorite. because he is seriously misunderstood.. Daemon is a calculated man of war the most experinced in war than them all combined... daemon isnt just a piece of shit or an evil man George describe him as LIGHT AND DARK FOR A REASON... because his actions can be seen as good his actions can be seen as the most horrible acts in war.... but i think daemon did everything good as far in war even wanting to marry rhaenyra understanding their targaryen history honestly i think daemonnis greater than most targaryen kings but the show minimize his knowledge of war the reasons why characters did what they did but i liked the story better without prophecies or when haelena was just a dreamer instead of now she telling the whole story

I agree that hbo/Warner could’ve had a hand in the show. But the interviews by condol and Hess point towards them being the ones who ruined the show. Did you see the interview where she said “there are battles, war, armies, political schemes, but at the end of the day it comes down to these 2 women trying to figure it out”
That has nothing to do with hbo/Warner. In my opinion

I haven't really kept up with the Sara Hess hate. Based off what I've seen, it looks like an unfounded band-wagon people are just joining to look cool. Like in the early 2000s, everyone on the internet was saying the Star Wars prequels were terrible. And now HALF those people are saying the prequels were good. Back then, it was just a bandwagon. And I think that's the Sara Hess situation right now.
I don't even know much about her. I think I've seen her in interviews. She's the one in the glasses, right? All I know about her is that she doesn't like Daemon and she wrote episode 1.9, which was one of the weaker episodes but I liked it more on the second and third rewatch. It was fun having a green episode. Or... green and Rhaneys and Meleys, lol.

I think prophecy would possibly destroy the show only because they are motivated by propehcy it helps motivate all the characters choices it was okay for viserys but not everyone else... because of prophecy the story is weak, the characters are weak... they dont make decisions of their own but with the help of prophecy i mean daemon is a man of war he knows and he understands war, which means his choice to be fight for rhaenyra which is his duty Nd because he knows war he knows the usurpers would have to kill them all if they wish to rule or have them give up their right to claim and choose peace i mean rhaenyra isnt so weak as to suggest it after her daughters death because of the greens usurping her throne and have her fathers body rot she blamed them rightfully so and daemon should blame them BECAUSE THEY ARE THE REASON FOR DAEMON BEING PUSHED FURTHER DOWN THE LINE OF SUCCESSION HIS PLAN WAS TO ALWAYS MARRY HIS TARGARYEN FAMILY MEMBER..WHY NOT MAKE HIS PROTECTOR THIS WAY HE ISNT EMOTUONAL OR ANGRY ABOUT BEING PASSED OVER ND HE HAS PIWER HE IS PROTECTING THE REALM FROM THE GREENS AND PROTECTING HIS FAMILY FROM AEMOND KINSLAYER... THEY MESSINH DAEMON UP IN MY OPINION EVEN IF VISERYS PASSED HIM OVER FOR RHAENYRA HE RESPECTED RHAENYRA BECAUSE OF HER RUTHLESSNESS SHE PROVES HER BLOOD OF FIRE AND SHE IS A DRAGON... IN THE SHOW SHE DOESNT HAVE THAT RUTHLESSNESS THE CHARACTERS ARE ALL MINIMIZED INCLUDING JACE NOW HE IS A CRYBABY INSTEAD OF A STRONG PRINCE ALL THE CHARACTERS ARE DIFFERENT BECAUSE OF PROPHECY EVEN ALICENT ISNT MOTIVATED FOR HER SONS CLAIM " A SON COMES BEFORE A DAUGHTER" THE STORY TO ME ISNT IMPACTFUL BECAUSE THE WAR IS A MISTAKE EVERY ACTION OF THE CHARACTER IS MAKING A MISTAKE AND IT MINIMIZES THE SHOW

I think connecting this show although unavoidable for obvious reasons so openly to GoT is a major mistake. For me the only mention of Dany should have been in the first episode and then the writers should have never brought up any allusion to her again. GoT will always have a negative affect on every related property because that’s the ending to all of this, much like every franchise that’s ever existed the ending often makes prequels impossible see Star Wars or Alien for example. The prophecy’s prominence in this show when it was irrelevant in GoT is also a huge mistake especially if you go with what the writers are going with that everyone who believed in it was a fundamentally bad person, prophecies are common so people are familiar with how they play out in media but I believe you need to be careful how you present it to your audience, we saw what it led to so the prophecy being a character motivation was made a no starter.

It’s the book readers not all but most and content creators who are ruining the show for a lot of us.
Most of the viewers haven’t read the book and don’t go by the book because they don’t know what happened in the book therefore it’s all new to us.
Though I’ve watched so many lore videos and break downs of the book so I know what did happen, it’s still not ruined for me because they didn’t do everything the book stated.
People hate to the show now yet they keep making videos to make money off the series.

I don’t want a one for one adaptation of the book. The story is so thin. The show is expanding these plot points and contextualizing characters much more. The concern isn’t the one season, it’s the attachment to the incoherent GoT final season that creates a genuine skepticism. There’s definitely plenty to enjoy for the broader audience, and as long as they have dragon fights, that audience will continue to enjoy the series.

I disagree.. I haven't read the books, neither "A song if ice and fire" or "Fire & Blood"; yet I'm perfectly capable of seeing a decline in writting quality for seasons 6-8 of GOT, and 2 of HOTD. What I really don't like is the fact that almost nothing that happens have real consecuences or emotional impact. People forgot about the death of Jaehaerys two episodes later, even Haelena doesn't seem to be that bothered (let's not talk about Alicent). What about Rhaenys's death? How much time did we spend feeling the emotions of the poeple who loved and respected her? ... 3 minutes the most?
In contrast; do you remember the slow pacing, the silence, the faces, the tears of that last scene of GOT season 1 when Ned was beheaded? ... I certainly do! I still can see Sansa screaming, I still can see Arya trying not to look, I can still see Cersei trying to convince Joffrey of not doing it. That's the difference

It’s a prequel, not a sequel. Nothing about the dance contradicts GoT. And because it’s not a sequel, forcing references to season 8 GoT serves no narrative purpose whatsoever because this story isn’t contingent on those events because it’s a…. Prequel. Does that make sense?
