The Stannis Baratheon Story - Origins
So before we get started, I have to admit something from the beginning - I was not a huge fan of Stannis Baratheon. But after digging into his past, and really putting my focus on what really shaped Stannis in his youth, I certainly feel differently. I’m making a series of videos dedicated to understanding this character, with the end goal being to thoroughly answer one question:
Why does everyone love Stannis?
This particular video is going to focus on his origin, but specifically focus on two areas that I think really contributed to the character that we know in the main series of A Song of Ice And Fire and Game of Thrones.

If Ned showed Robert the letter from Lysa, that would be like accusing the queen of treason. Ned wanted to get the proof first before bringing it to Robert’s attention which is why he did all his investigating. Why didn’t they question Lysa? Catelyn said if this letter falls into the wrong hands they could be risking their lives. So they can’t send ravens. What were they gonna do? Tell the king that he needs to march to the Eyrie first? Sure he could’ve sent a rider, someone loyal to him but how long would that take? Season 1 is a great display of the essence of “the Game of thrones” and littlefinger who is in love with Ned’s wife I might add, outplays Ned since the very beginning who is in it for his own rise. I also like to think that Jaqen was in kings landing as a backup plan for littlefinger if things went differently. Littlefinger was the master of coin after all. But of course all this is just fan theory and I guess we’ll never have this answer.

The more I know about Robert, the more I think Cersei wasn’t that wrong to be resentful and even killed him. He’s like a shitty person overall, to his legal wife, to his (bastard) children and to his own brother (and he’s so happy to see Elia and her children death just because he despised Rhaegar too much). He might said and acted that he loved Ned but what he did was setting Ned up for failures thanks to his ignorance of governing as a king. His only redeeming quality that I can think of is that he’s a great warrior. Viserys is a kind of king who I can sympathize with when it comes to his family going to war after his death because despite his naivety, he tried everything to make the realm peaceful. Robert didn’t even try.

Book Stannis doesn’t seem like a guy who kills his own daughter. But since Martin said that the burning is canon, I’m curious to see how will he make it make sense (but maybe that’s it. He knows it won’t make sense so he can’t finish the TWOW and ADOS).

I haven’t gotten super far in the books, so I can’t speak to that, but from what it sounds like that’s a completely different Sansa than in the show. I could never really stand her in the show, but first watch through I hoped she’d get more likable as she grew up. After all, who among us wasn’t annoying and somewhat bratty at 13? But honestly I just kept disliking her more and more as she got older, because it seemed like she almost became more entitled (outside of abusive circumstances of course, so I’m referring primarily to post-Ramsey). It was clear to me that she intentionally did everything she could to sow distrust towards Jon while he was King in the North, and when he questioned her about it, she just compared him to Joffrey to make him be quiet. She knew what she was doing. She had seen enough of politics and royal duties and the NORTH ITSELF to understand why presenting a united front to the lords was important. And she just deflected her responsibility as an advisor to Jon by saying that he wasn’t letting her question him or have an opinion, when that’s not what he said at all. All of this reads, to me at least, as her feeling entitled to being in power rather than Jon. And it makes sense given that she was canonically a twat to him for being a bastard, more in the book from what I know, but it’s also referenced several times in the show. Then came everything surrounding the Long Night and Daenerys coming to Winterfell. I don’t hate the rift between them, it wasn’t executed very well in terms of writing but I think it generally makes sense. But her complaining about Daenerys’s large army and dragons just comes across as whiny, because the North had been begging for help in the fight from anyone who would listen and Daenerys obliged, then Sansa scolded her for bringing *too much* help. Yes, food is an issue, but someone with Sansa’s upbringing and political experience should know how to discuss that issue in a polite manner, rather than being aggressive just to show the Northern lords that she has more prejudice towards “an outsider” like Daenerys than Jon does. The whole scenario just highlights to me that she was jealous that people were giving Daenerys authority and not her, because she repeatedly causes unnecessary conflict with a critical ally, seemingly only for the purpose of campaigning to be the new leader of the North after Jon bent the knee to Daenerys and the Northern lords abandoned him (some loyalty, but that’s a whole different conversation). I respect that people liked show Sansa, but I have always argued that it’s ridiculous that her ending is treated like the victory of a protagonist. At best, Sansa is just baby Cersei, and that is far from a good thing. She is not, in simplistic terms, a good guy in the later seasons. She is an antagonist. So was Cersei. So was Tywin. And the best part about Cersei and Tywin was that even though they were villains in the overall story, they were still grey and intriguing and very fun to watch. Sansa is arguably the same. What she isn’t, is a protagonist. I can respect loving Cersei or Tywin or Sansa (though the only one of those that I personally love at all is Tywin), but I think it’s important to recognize them for their role in the overall story. Again, this doesn’t refer to book Sansa; I don’t know enough about her to speak on it, and even if I did we don’t know how her story ends. But TLDR, show Sansa only becomes more unlikable throughout her arc in my opinion, and by the end is as much a villain as Cersei, the woman who essentially raised her during adolescence.

If you like the prospect of Sansa from the first few seasons, I think you’ll really enjoy her chapters later in the series, and it’ll be clear that there was a much different trajectory for her arc by George RR Martin compared to D&D’s interpretation.

@@DCharles I wouldn’t exactly say I liked her in the first few seasons, I just held out hope that she would become less insufferable lol. I can’t say I ever liked her. I definitely believe that GRRM’s version is and will remain far superior to D&D’s, though.

The writers didn’t understand madness. There is a difference between making questionable moral choices and mental illness. A mentally ill person breaks down, Danny did not. She popped off Drogon after burning everyone in Kings Landing and was perfectly composed. Not a hair out of place. She had become a despot, but she wasn’t ‘mad’. The problem with this was that real mental illness might have made more narrative sense. The flip from humanist to despot did not.

From Grok fleshing out an idea I fed it: Title: **Beyond the Sunset Sea** **Setting**: The story begins several years after the events of "Game of Thrones." Westeros has achieved a period of uneasy peace, but the world beyond the Sunset Sea remains largely a mystery, filled with myths and unexplored territories. **Plot Outline**: **Arya's Journey**: - Arya, now an explorer of repute, ventures beyond the Sunset Sea, driven by curiosity and the legends of lands that might offer new adventures or threats. Her journey leads her to an ancient, isolated continent where the "Old Guardians" - an ancient race related to the Children of the Forest - were exiled long ago. **The Unintended Threat**: - Arya unknowingly triggers an ancient mechanism, releasing a magical seal that was keeping the Old Guardians contained. These beings possess incredible power over natural elements and were once allies of the Children of the Forest, but were exiled for trying to control all of nature's forces. - The Old Guardians, upon release, see Westeros as a new land to dominate, believing they are reclaiming what was rightfully theirs from ancient times. **Bran's Fall**: - The Old Guardians, with their deep connection to nature, sense Bran's presence through the weirwood network. They infiltrate Westeros through magical means, leading an assault on the weirwoods, severing Bran's connections and effectively removing him from his role as the Three-Eyed Raven. **Jon's Return**: - Jon Snow, having lived a secluded life, is called back to action. The prophecy of "Fire and Ice" resurfaces, suggesting that only one with the blood of both Targaryen and Stark can confront this new threat. Jon, with his unique lineage, becomes pivotal. **The Threat**: - The Old Guardians plan to unleash a cataclysmic event, a great flood, symbolizing a rebirth through destruction. They believe that fire and ice, when united, will create a purifying deluge to cleanse the world for their reign. - This event is set to be triggered at a point where the magic of the land is weakest, potentially near the Heart of Winter or the ruins of Valyria, where Dragonfire meets the eternal ice. **Alliances and Battles**: - Jon, with the help of surviving characters like Sansa (as a political strategist), Tyrion (for his diplomatic skills), and new characters who are descendants of the main houses, must rally the kingdoms. - They explore ancient lore, seek out forgotten magic, and perhaps even remnants of Valyrian knowledge to find a way to counter the Old Guardians' magic. **Climax**: - The final confrontation happens at the site of the intended cataclysm. Jon, perhaps with a faction of dragons (if any survive or are reawakened) or wielding a magical weapon, faces off against the leader of the Old Guardians. - The battle is not just physical but also magical, with Jon needing to use his inner balance of fire and ice to either stop or control the cataclysm, turning the destructive flood into a renewal instead. **Resolution**: - The threat is averted, but at significant cost. The balance of magic and nature is reestablished, but Westeros is forever changed. The Old Guardians are either destroyed, banished again, or integrated into society after being stripped of their more dangerous powers. - A new council or government might form, incorporating knowledge from both human heritage and the wisdom of the Old Guardians, aiming for a more harmonious coexistence with nature and magic. **Themes**: - **Exploration and Consequences**: Arya's journey reflects humanity's eternal quest for knowledge and the unintended consequences that can follow. - **Legacy and Responsibility**: Jon's return highlights the theme of destiny and how one's lineage can impose duties. - **Balance of Nature**: The story explores the relationship between humans and the natural world, including magical elements, emphasizing the need for balance. This sequel would explore new territories, both geographically and thematically, while staying true to the essence of conflict, legacy, and the mystical elements that define the "Game of Thrones" universe.

Weren't Jaime and Cersei born 3 years after Tywin and Joanna married? Maybe Tywin had a low sperm count, and Tyrion's deformed sperm was the only one that made it through. Jaime being born of that Targaryen line would make him fit the Azor Ahai prophecy. It would also make a great parallel with Jaime and Tyrion both killing their own fathers.

“You served him well when serving was safe.” This is Ned telling Jaime how he’s always looked at his actions the day his killed the king he swore to protect with his life. From Ned’s perspective Tywin sacking Kings Landing and Jaime killing the Mad King as two actions done in concert when Tywin recognized defending against the coming siege would be a losing effort that could cost him everything he’s worked for since he was young. To Ned Tywin conspired with Jaime to gain Robert’s favor by having Jaime kill the king he swore an oath to and Tywin would have his army clear the way and open the gates to a sacked city. Ned sees this as opportunistic and an act of dishonor. When there was no threat to his liege, Jaime served the Mad King. When the possibility of having to defend the Mad King with his life as Robert’s army marched on Kings Landing, he killed the Mad King. Jaime didn’t explain his actions because Jed judged those actions the moment he saw Jaime sitting on the Iron Throne and the bodies of Reagar’s children in the throne room. This is why Jaime mocks any supposed acts that should bring dishonor upon a man that judged his actions wrongly that day.

This is the one time that was see Cersei and Robert actually being vulnerable and speaking openly to one another. It feels like a glimpse into a world where their marriage is at least amicable. Are you talking about the book? Stop showing footage of the show. BTW, in the book, Jaime cut the mad king's throat. And Jaime is Azor Ahai.

Robert did not love Lyanna nor wanted to be her husband; he loved Ned and wanted to be his brother.

To me her character is meant to be a clear example how traditional feminity is a role women are groomed into with false expectations, with the ultimate purpose of being exploited by others. She ends up becoming a victim of her upbringing. She has been taught to be a lady all of her life. She trusted and followed her elders lessons proficiently. Had she had been born a man, she would have trained to become best fighters in Westeros, but as a high born girl she became the most refined and agreeable of Ladies as was her duty. The tragedy is that what she was taught to expect from the world ended up being untrue, and she was ill prepared to face it’s difficulties because that’s how she was taught since birth. I personally always felt a bit identified with Sansa, since I was made to attend a private religious girls only school (NOT the norm in my country) until I entered uni. The lack of socialization with guys plus the sheltered environment of the school totally clashed with the realities of a normal academic setting. As a result I was unable to properly socialize and I believe I missed out on a lot of valuable experiences from my college years. Of course I learned, just like Sansa, on my own the hard way, and hold resentment and other issues due to it.
