      The way they manipulate phrasing is ridiculous. I've heard the recent killing of Al-Baghdadi described as "preemptive self defence".

      Phrases like that will always remind me of a cutscene where a Warhammer 40K space marine cooly lowers his gun while saying "nutralizing". Which doesn't surprise me for multiple reasons.

      That's what ACTUAL "political correctness" is. There was no threat, there is not "preemptive self defence", but the politics dictate that that's what the propaganda network has to say.

      @@DC-rm8ww I wonder if they will ever realise that trying to arrest supposed war criminals and put them before the courts in The Hague is a much more efficient powermove against international terrorism than randomly shooting people. Maybe slower but also not creating marytrs for the next generation of the operation. Thereby harder to propagandise against. Also public imagery of said leader that is not controlled by his propaganda network leading to discord and potentially destroying an artificially heroised image. But no, they have to prove they are so awesome they can kill anyone at any time.

      @@felixleidinger1670 This is especially true with Baghdadi. Given both the cultish ideology and the decentralized structure of IS, most people agree that the assassination of Baghdadi will accomplish basically nothing. It was essentially just PR for Trump after the fallout of his betrayal of the Kurds. Funny how all righteous notions of American values go out the window as soon as you're outside the borders of the US.

      The fact that the government's authority to use lethal force and participate in wars can be privatized is so deeply unsettling and terrifying. Imagine being able to directly convert capital into violence and how corporations with immense concentrations of capital can purchase the power to kill.
      The use of legitimate violence and its monopoly is the cornerstone of the modern state. You can't treat that (violence) as a commodity because the law of capital accumulation will ultimately undermine the rule of law (if i can purchase enough violence to rival the state why would i obey the law) and why would I even respect private property if the violence that i can exercise overpowers the one that the government uses to guarantee your property rights.
      This fits in the current US trend of commodifying civil society. Look at the privatization of the penitentiary system and "Citizens United" (the commodification of speech) look at how capitalism erodes the bases of liberal society.

      @@kasrakhatir The worst thing about this is that instead of doing anything we are hoping someone else to solve the problem, hoping "god will punish these people" or "their bad karma will catch up to them".... sometimes bad people do bad things and they get rewarded for it and dont feel a lick of guilt. Sometimes good people do good things and are punished for them time after time.
      I wish i believed in karma or i believed in some divine retribution and for some people i think that helps them go to sleep at night thinking everything is right with the world.
      We cannot pretend this doesnt exist and go "well god will take care of this problem for us" regardless of whether god exists or not. We have to understand this is a problem and take measured steps towards making sure bad stuff does not happen again.. This is the reason why we have holocaust memorials. the reason why we must not hide our history. Some things we cant take back and some people we cannot save. and life is filled with horrible things that happen all of the time to good people.
      I hope i dont come off as too angry at you because im not really mad at you, i am mad at the indecisiveness and the passiveness that phrases like "its gods will" or "karma" makes it so people are so passive in their lives and dont help people when they can. I think religion has helped many people become better people but it has also allowed for people to get indoctrinated as well as overly zealous and hateful. Also fearful of people who are different from them.
      At the end of the day all we can do is try to be good to people. Do what we can to help them and what really sucks is sometimes we can try everything and still fail.
      I sometimes wish there was justice in the world and in some cases there is. But everything does not happen for a reason. Sometimes people just get bad luck. And there are many cases where truly evil people exist and are not punished for their cruelty and evil deeds. But even though i feel we mustn't avoid these stories of horrible things just because it makes us feel sad (we need to know the truth, no matter how horrible it is, we must remember this, and remember them otherwise we will be doomed to repeat it.) There is also good in the world and many people do good things and can be selfless and caring and just good people.
      The world is scary because at the end of the day much of what happens depends on us, and how we react to each other. We can do great things and also cruel things, and so many people are living with their heads in the sand like an ostrich.... me included much of the time, i wont lie a lot of the time i just try to do things that are fun like video games or tv shows to take my mind off of horrible shit... but we need to understand that we cannot keep escaping. There are some things we can change in this world and we need to understand that, life can be cruel and people can be cruel but we can do better.

Ignorance has never been an excuse to justice or the law. You should know better on your own, especially in a society with people like progressives openly telling you, and even more so with a world screaming it at you with such easy access to modern communication. That goes for EVERYONE.
      America dropped hundreds of thousands of flyers on Germany telling them about the concentration camps because the average person didn't know or believe it. They thought it was propaganda and not their problem... just like we did to Native Americans and we're still doing. If they are in ANY way at fault then we are hundreds of times worse. You may be innocent as a kid but the adult thing to do is take responsibility for your circumstance... doesn't matter if you had anything to do with it.

    Something I think worth pointing out about how Fox whitewashes the Nisour square massacre is their propagandist makes specific effort to call out, and berate, the fact that the mercenaries in question are being tried in a civilian court. I think this detail is something worth noting when you remember one of the inciting actions behind the American revolution was that, prior to independence, British Imperial troops stationed in the American territories did not answer to the local civil authorities, and were consequently allowed to get away with multiple criminal acts; it was consequently a detail specifically stated in the Constitution of the United States (and the first article at that!) that the military should be answerable to a civil authority. By arguing against that principle here, Flaherty is arguing against both the Constitution of the United States, and in fact one of the principles behind the American revolution itself!

    • @efffvss
      @efffvss 4 года назад +4

      What did they get away with? The main incident I can remember in pre-revolution America was the Boston Massacre. While the incident became heavily propagandised, the soldiers involved were tried by the local authorities (and defended by future President John Adams) within the year. So that isn't really 'getting away with criminal acts'.

    • @asteroidrules
      @asteroidrules 4 года назад +29

      @@efffvss In 1768 British marines stationed in Annapolis, Maryland murdered two civilians, rather than being given a proper trial they were given a court martial and declared innocent. A similar situation occurred in North Carolina in 1771. The 27 Grievances in the Declaration of Independence make specific mention of how "[King George] has affected to render the military independent of and superior to the civil power" (grievance 12) "protecting [imperial troops], by a mock trial from punishment for any murders which they should commit on the inhabitants of these states" (grievance 15) and "is at this time transporting large armies of foreign mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and unworthy [of] the head of a civilized nation" (grievance 25, particularly noteworthy as it's specifically complaining about the use of mercenary troops).

PMCs should be outlawed. 😡

    The worst part is, I can believe that stuff like this happened every day. Not this brazen, not on this scale, but I can definitely see unprovoked violence on civilians-maybe even violence that maims or kills people-being performed somewhere in Iraq every day that Blackwater was working there. That that many people were so hateful or apathetic to the Iraqi people that they would do such things, and their co-workers wouldn't even see fit to mention it. And that scares the hell out of me.

    • @jotabeas22

      Wars of any scale always bring this kind of pain.
      However, as soon as professional nationless soldiers (mercenaries) are involved, everything spirals further out of control.
      This is one of the main reasons why war should always be avoided at any cost. No war has been fair on civilians.

    • @thomashamilton5817
      @thomashamilton5817 3 года назад +2

      it is estimated that 80-90% of civilian deaths during the Iraq are attributed to insurgents. During World War 2, what we would consider today to be war crimes, were committed against Nazis. Even innocent German civilians who were not participants in the war, were brutally killed. During the Vietnam War, the Viet Cong (insurgent group within the sovereign state of South Vietnam), set off bombings that killed mostly civilians that they were intending winning the sympathies of.
      War is not right or wrong, it is morally grey.

    Postgraduate Peace and Conflict Researcher here; just wanted to let you know that this video is massive and utterly important. Jeremy Scahill has more than once proven his ability to uncover and classify aspects of U.S. military engagement throughout the world, and with Iraq being not my own field (more tilted towards Afghanistan and Pakistan), reading Scahill's interviews was shocking - although the atrocities commited by Blackwater mercenaries are legion in my field since the beginning of the second Gulf War.
    What's still largely missing, and this is what makes your video so important, is to link these security incidences back to domestic policy, because it's difficult to relate these two seemingly unlinked areas! Thank you.

      I believe Foucault did this with his bio politics. The tactics used overseas on insurgents and "enemy combatants" being used on the populace at home. A book called Cities Under Siege looked into this phenomenon. There's a reason we as black persons feel that we're treated as enemy combatants: Given Former US Army persons are giving police a warrior training mentality and combine this with militarized gear and us vs them thinking and the propaganda, and you have a domesticated Army ready to enact whatever measures they see fit to keep persons safe.
