    I love this performance of this incredible piece of music. It makes me imagine being poor in a sunny Mexican outdoor cafe drinking tequilla to forget my sorrows, A light breeze here and there brings comfort (yes, solace), but the sun, for better and/or worse, keeps asserting itself. Those chromatic passages convey that sense of alcohol haze, making me feel slightly dizzy. Absolutely beautiful throughout (both the music and performance), so sadly beautiful: perfect melancholy.

    Brings tears to my eyes ! One of my favorite Joplin pieces. Spent hours and hours practicing this, had to give up piano due to arthritis in my hands. Does me good to see you play it perfectly ! Also love watching your right foot in this ! Amazing !

    This piece brings tears to my eyes with it's beauty, when it is played without hurry, and with the dramatic pauses that Joplin wrote into it, like this sensitive pianist just did! Thank you so much!

      Yes, this is how it's supposed to be played, in "slow march tempo", a serenade. I don't get people playing it like some sort of lively dance.

    That was the loved song of my British friend Jack Gilbert, who was an extraordinarily good clarinet player and who sat down at my piano and played it. He died almost 20 years ago and, listening to this wonderful recording, I still feel missing him and his friendship. Thank you! Lutz Jordan from Hamburg, Germany

      Yes, Just as Nek says it’s those pauses which are heartbreaking. In my view it’s Scott Joplin’s finest work - finest of a fine and enormously talented man. He has enriched the world with his beautiful ingenuity.

    Wonderfully played. I have felt that Joplin’s rags have been the target of many to rush though; there is more to hear and feel when one chooses a more modest tempo. Bravo! I’d love to hear your take on Heliotrope Bouquet...

      Correct. Nothing will ruin the beauty of these compositions like rushing through. Joplin cautioned those who played these to be aware of their natural slow stride.

    Beautifully played! I am teaching myself this. Do you use pedal? Sometimes it sounds muddy if I do but detached when I don’t. Any advice on this?

    • @yypiano4260
      @yypiano4260  5 дней назад

      I use the pedal sparingly on this piece because of the chromatic nature of the melody. Imagine the left hand being a guitar and doesn't need to be sustained

    This tempo is perfect. Solace must be played slow to impart the "feeling of consolation in time of sadness". I get turned off when some pianists play Solace fast pace.

    Good interpretation but a pity that it doesn't modulate the volume in certain phases of the piece. It's pretty much at the same volume from start to finish.
