Some useful tips I picked up from my own playthrough, might be of help to you :) 16:20 The way animal giving works is simple: as long as the animal is present in the palace, you can just give infinite numbers to other cities, so you only need to capture the animal once. The animal you gift is not removed from the menagerie, but you must give animals to cities of alternative climates. For example, you wouldn't give panda's to cities of similar climate to Yin, but you would give them animals that you've received from other cities. It's very easy to get 9 animals from just giving the right animal, but you have to keep a close eye on it or you'll get the wrong animals. 22:00 When it comes to desirability, use the statues. They provide far better desirability than gardens, especially for the elite housing. When I plan out elite housing blocks, I use gardens to mark out the area to build them, then replace all the gardens with statues (providing good feng shui). Surrounding an elite house with statues behind and to one side, as well as the desirability of other elite housing, provides all the desirability needed to reach Heavenly Compound's (highest possible elite housing). :D 25:00 Commenter below explained the shields/coins. Generally, you should ALWAYS send a spy to obvious enemies (one to sabotage military, one to gather information). It's useful to do this in some missions where the briefing implies a particular city is an enemy to you, but be aware the enemy may discover the spies and reverse them for their own uses, causing them to start spying on you (yes, the enemy can send spies to wreak havok on your city, not helpful!) 27:10 The reason cities started invading you is simple: you sent all your troops to defend Baoji. *Don't* do this in future missions, especially *NOT* on missions where you have vassals: if you send all your troops to defend a city, the game will see this as you having no military strength (as your forts are empty), which automatically causes the other cities to see you as being a weak leader (because a leader's strength is determined by their military in Emperor) and therefore invade. These invasions are not actually scripted into the mission, but are a result of the player's action. This is much more so of a problem at Very Hard, so in future missions where you are requested to defend cities, send all but one fort of troops (if it isn't enough, just keep building forts until you either reach the 12 fort limit or reach the current limit of forts you have): just having a single fort with some troops is enough to dissuade anyone from trying to attack you. 33:00 Even if you fail to defeat them, what instead happens is you become vassal to the enemy. This is easy enough to get out of, and in some cases, it might actually be easier to become vassal so you can build up the forces to defeat them quickly and get out of vassalhood. That's why "Surrender" doesn't automatically lose you the game, since surrendering makes you a vassal. However, being vassal to another city means you can't win the mission until you break vassalhood with them, which means ignoring their tribute demands and then defeating their invasion. 34:30 Unfortunately, the river cannot stop the enemy. Unlike in previous games, where the river really was an easy way to get around invasions (eg, ignoring invasions if they're on an opposite bank), enemies CAN and DO use the river by creating little reed boats. This means that you have to defend all parts of the city and placing walls to try and make them not cross the river won't work.
It's funny how we quickly need a tomb for lady hao to ease the kings pain. But this project will take several years! So i doubt the king will cry all this time. When we come back he surely won't remember he married lady hao ...

Congratulation on finishing the Shang Dynasty mission !! If you want to turtle, you have to fully encircle the city with walls from all sides, no nature barriers (except ramps). For military soldier strength, a full company of Chariots is 1.5 times stronger than infantry in melee attack value (4x90 vs 16x15), but infantry can pile up into one single tile, but Chariots can't, however for a single soldier, a chariot is 6 times as strong in attack, but just 66% more hitpoints(250 vs 150 each), and only neglectable ranged attack power. Over all, infantries are good as defense units, and only good at attack when you pile a lot of them into one tile. On the other hand, chariots are like shock troops, normally not that useful on their own (unless you want to suffer mass casualty), only after enemy is held by infantry then charge chariots into battle, like a hammer and anvil tactic. For ranged attack you'll have to wait for crossbowmen.
Menageries were a mechanic in Cleopatra, weren't they? 7:47 Carried away. 10:2539:55 Chinese Stepped Pyramid. 19:55 Hunted animals are also in the Menagerie, it seems. 32:00 China's not really known for its cavalry.
I didn't get invaded throughout the entire mission. It's probably because I was eager in mission 11 to get my hands on 'game meat', so I set up a trading route with the Nomad Camp. I had been sending them so much gifts actually that I even managed to get them as allies. So in the beginning I already had 3 allies and 7 trading routes. I quickly set up those 4 chariot forts and continued to ally the other 4 cities. When I completed the Tumulus, I did get a message that the Nomad Camp was attacking (even though they were still allies) but they blew off their attack after 2 months or so. Seems that the key to victory is much more dependent on the other cities then I thought. In mission 12, the city of Yin helped me out of a crippling debt of over -2900 after begging them for cash. Sending that emissary (100 cash) was the last thing I did before falling beneath -2900. The game refuses to give you any more credit if you're near -3000.
googlesu And a city with a lot of shields could invade the player's city if the player doesn't build forts. Of course, the player can just choose to send spies to sabotage the military lol.

+GamerZakh yeah i know, but despite Caesar, Pharaoh and Zeus, in Emperor the other cities have so much more relevance! in the previous games, the cities were only useful for trading if you remember. just ask them three or four months before the predicted invasion in your city, there is a crossbow icon when you select an allied city in the world map. there, you can ask for military aid! hope it helps for future gaming :)

One thing to remember is having a big army often stops people attacking you. They don't like to attack if you're too strong.

It really does look unfair of AI sort of teleporting their troops inside your city.
Panlongcheng the nirvana of rice only Sell 12 rice year... Derp
Those symbols look like shields [China map]...the more the stronger your/their army.
Yeah I figured that out in a later mission. Emperor doesn't really explain all these symbols properly haha.
