I use to play that how does it feel back in the day right after church ends all the choir people who knew what song it was would look at me like really.😂
scirasco1 Raphael Saadiq produce this along with Lady off of Brown Sugar. Like he said S p a c e. Less is more with this particular song. Prince used this a lot in his ballads. Let the song breathe.
@@Guitarwizza1 So true... What caught my attention was the fact that U named 2 of my fav artists,... namely *Raphael Saddiq & Prince* ... However, the True genius of this song was the late, great *Spanky Alford* who laid down these guitar licks!... *Spanky* can also be heard all over *Tony Toni Tone's* best album *House Of Music* ... *D'Angelo & Raphael* got the best outta *Spanky* shortly B4 his untimely demise! 🎸 PS - *Dwayne Wiggins* Raphael's half-Brother *(T.T.T.)* also has some soulful guitar licks as well!
@@santino591 Yeah I know about Spanky on House Of Blues album. But the guitar on "How Does It Feel" is Raphael on a Telecaster. He mentioned it many times in interviews. Plus Spanky approach is much more intricate along with playing his semi-hollow Gibsons.
Besides the amazin’ playing, soo cool that you are teaching how to hold back and share room for other sounds so the overall feel of the song can come across its best!! Thanks for sharing these videos Kerry.
I love how the space provides room for the Hendrix double stops, it's not just Prince like but cool how he had the Hendrix fills also I'm intermediate at best so thank you so much brother for sharing, keep living your gifts.
hey great tutorial Kerry! This my favorite song! Percussive feel and sense of space on point! I just wanna say coming from a jazz background that I think the 4th chord is a "backdoor dominant" C9 where you can use some very interesting voicings like C9#11, or any inversion of E half diminished. This is a chord that D'angelo also uses on Africa from the same album! Not trying to come in and act like I'm better than u or anything but this was something that helped spice up my playing on this song! And thanks for the ideas and hard work!
I like what you're doing on this.. my friend Spanky was the cat that did this, good job. Thanks.. Cats dont give songs the space needed for the vocalist. D'Angelo is my favorite artist..
amazing, how does it feel is one of my favourite songs of all time. i love how you talk about space in music and restraint, i really think thats beautiful too. my rhythm is totally off, really need to work on it
Now tho is right on time, This is one of my favorite lessons so far. For me, it’s all the fill in work you teach, those are the golden nuggets I seek, and the flow, letting it breathe is something I’ve been working on. Thanks for the lesson
This was unreal, first song I ever understood how to jam on. The teaching style is amazing, a lot of room to learn and incorporate my own style! Keep it coming!!!!! More D'Angelo!!
Wow, I Think I Can Play It Now After Watching This. I Self Taught Myself To Play Brown Sugar, I'd Love To See How You Play It To Compare And See If I Was Right Within What I Was Hearing By Ear. I Love Your Page Bro!👑
This is a great explanation of the song beyond just the chords. There were some great tips in there to really get some of those sounds you hear on the original track. Definitely earned a sub with this one. Thanks bro!
Dope lesson... I completely agree with playing the space and not over doing it with this song. I used to have that issue when playing it. I think we fall into that trap a lot of the time thinking that we need add as many fills as possible when its not needed. Literal example of less is more.
I’m with you about not overplaying a song as I try to play the same, BUT can you PLEASE go in just once. Especially for a song like this! Just once my brotha, let us see the magic
so stoked on this, especially how you dont just show how to play it, its more about knowing how to play it - to allow incorporation of this into other songs
I can’t wait to buy my guitar and get busy relearning. I haven’t played in 30 plus years. Hope it’s like riding a bike. Thanks for the instruction videos
Mr. Kerry, you're a great player and teacher. Over the years I've learned different songs (R&B...Rock) on guitar, however, I'm still trying to figure out how to compliment chords with smooth licks like you did in the lesson...Ase!
Yeah man I was all about the filling and being fast, but I can see how that would ruin a song. Now I'm more about feeling the song! Thanks for sharing your wisdom bro+!
Please post your comments below! Hope this lesson helps you.
this is a perfect tutorial in every way thank you!
Would you mind nothing the type of amp and voice settings you use to get your sound?
Sure it helps a lot!
I apreciate your work and the music of D'Angelo. Keep playin...
Thanks so much.
Greetings from Portugal
You took it to the next level love the way u play

Great tutorial. And a joy to hear you singing along with the lines. Please consider a seperate track for your voice. I'm gonna go find some space now!

love when you go over dense songs!!!!!!!

This song is ALL THE WAY Prince inspired. Thanks, too! This is way better than the guitar parts I came up with.
Totally!!! And most of Prince’s tracks were inspired by Parliament. That and Carlos Santana. Seeing this track live is absolutely fucked!
@@pbelancsik don’t forget about the Larry Graham influence too.
beautiful playing, dude. thank you so much.
