The whole end of the video was a microphone fail. I had my wireless mics, which I never use, hooked up wrong so sound was recorded through the Iphone mic rather than the Rode wireless mic. This added wind nose, limbs bragging across the camera and me breathing. I had already shot that talking head segment while sitting in my truck but it was dull and I didn't like the audio since the truck and A/C were running when I did it. I figured I'd add some visual elements and better audio to that talk. The video part was improved but I crapped the bed on the audio part. I only discovered this while editing and just didn't feel like doing it again. Oh well, live and learn.

My apologies for the delay in this comment: I would suggest you look into Forearm Cructches for your dad, while he is working in the yard. The fore arm cuff will keep the crutch on his arm when he lets go of the handles. That way he never has to set his 'canes' down and look for them later. Now, that could trip him, as well; so try renting some for a month or so, to let him try tem.
I've had to deal with elderly relatives with ambulatory issues most of my life. The joys of having longevity genes, when 85 is common, 95 is easily reached, and a couple of triple digits in our family.

I read a Louie L'Amour book where the protagonist followed bees to a water source in the desert. Years later I was hiking outside of Yuma, AZ. and bee went by and then another. I told my trail partner that there was water up ahead. We step around this large, house size, boulder and on the down hill side there was a pocket of muddy water with 15 or 20 bees lining the 'shore'. He looks at the water and shakes his head, "How you know that?" There was also a dead ground squirrel in the pool, something else indeed.
I liked this video a lot because I enjoyed seeing your Mom and Dad and Friend in the beginning. Pleasesant to see. Thanks for the bee drinking information, too. I waiting for a jar of your honey; looking forward to enjoying that, too.

On a couple of my hives I have landing boards of 4"x 4" plastic foundation and I noticed when the dew is on them in the morning the bees are getting the water off of the foundation, otherwise they are around our pond edges, and the water above the mud until stirred is still seemingly clear. It doesn't seem to bother these amazing creatures. Don't you just love them!

I want a T shirt with a front pocket ! Pretty sweet! I have a small solar fountain near my beehives. I add just a little sea salt to it for them and they love it ! I have a neighbor that wasn't happy about my bees hanging around his pool. I asked what kind of system he had and it was a saltwater system. That is a bee magnet! LOLOLOL

They love dog bowls. My neighbor had bees. I had many a sting trying to rescue bees drowning the dog bowl

When I lived in the Idaho desert, I enjoyed watching honey bees drink from my leaking outside faucet. They came in swarms..pretty cool to sit among them.
I'm amazed they survive in the desert.

They don't like water with Chlorine! I have a rain barrel and they love it when we have a heavy rain and it over full and water on the top. There was a wild hive somewhere near me about a year a go here in town. And the bees were all over my rain barrel when it was full. I put something under one side so the water only covered half the top and they could land on the top and walk to the edge and drink. On hot days ( in Florida is almost every day) it looked lake a swarm. They didn't care if I walked around them, they just wanted the water! Some one found the swarm in a house near me and got it out. There will be another swarm near me someday and I will have that water for them when they need it. I got where I could walk past them and let them buzz around me. They didn't care and I didn't care. Bees don't make good pets, they will not let you play with them and pet them! LOL!
I have always believe that too. I see them in drying up ditches all the time.
One of the best salts to mix with water for your bees is Celtic Salt-due to its high mineral content.
If it's good for us it's probably good for them.

I have a stream running through my yard and when it gets low i throw some salt around the edges and they really go after the water that soaks up close to the salt and around the ground by it . I also try to keep some of it running so the banks stay wet. I have a bucket with some old metal detecting finds in it and I keep water in it and they really like it also. Hopefully mom will get more comfortable with the bees and enjoy them. ❤️🐝👍

That's really interesting. I have water out in the garden all the time for our resident Hedgehogs, & birds, so the Bees always have something to drink too. However, I've noticed that they'll come to the beds if I have to water, or the tubs with drip trays where the water has filtered through the compost. I've seen the birds make the same choice, so I assume they're doing it for the minerals too.

I don't have any bees, but recently a hive has found my bird-baths and I have filled them with some rocks and stuff so they have spots to land. I see as many as 30-40 bees at once on them sometimes. My curiosity has me really wondering where the hive is though. It's been fun watching them
Another thing bees drink: in one of JP's removal videos, he found pink honeycomb because the bees were drinking the red nectar from a hummingbird feeder.
Animals and insects are very resourceful, especially when it comes to food and water.

Yes. We have a leaky hose and window AC they drink from. Green algae is present in both places. I sometimes catch them sipping from the green moss that grows under those same areas. And they like the morning dew from my strawberry leaves. When I water, they're already hard at it.
I'll have to look at our strawberry beds.
@@628DirtRooster I catch them also on the drain holes of my potted plants, too. Wherever they sniff it out. Horse troughts are also popular places they congregate.
@@gazinta When we water our raised beds they drink from the wet dirt. It's not even a puddle. They are just sucking moisture out of the dirt and mulch.
@@628DirtRooster yep. The drain holes and sometimes after it rains, I catch them in the downspout telling me it's time to clean the gutters.

Yay for mom! When our kids were keeping bees, I suited up to observe their hives. I was afraid of bees, but after that day, I no longer have fear.

we have a well son our place. the well is pumping from 600' deep. no chemicals
like what you get in city tap water. My wife will fill up a bird bath sometimes twice a day.

I put a small brown mineral salt block in a tub of water with floats for them to land on and they love that set up.

Frederick Dunn has a video or two on bees drinking and their preferences with clear, salted water and I think other supplements.
Pond water is like Brawndo for bees, it has what bees crave 🤓🐝
Tella your mom she isn't an official beekeeper until she loses her hive tool a couple dozen of times. Like the Swarm Catcher shirts. Hope you have them at Hive Life.

I'll bet they go for "ugly" water because it's less likely for the bees to get seen by fishes, so more bees who drank from "safe" water sources survived.
We just put up a saltwater pool in our backyard and my bees have discovered it. Apparently bees love saltwater because my bees are all over my pool.
I know the bees around my mom’s house likes to drink the dogs water when I forget to empty it before he goes on the road with me so it sits all week outside

I think they use the algae to hold onto while they drink so they don't have to worry about getting washed away

I love videos with the family ❤. An I will admit when I first got into bees I always set them out water. But I too learned from the girls to stuff my clean water up my booty!! They didn’t want it .. they loved the pond water an the algae side was where they always went an still go..🤷🏻♂️ an I have learned the girls are smarter than me when it comes to what they need😂😂 but I am learning ever day it’s a learning experience every day

Whats your thoughts on the Hillco Bee Suit? it looks nice as having ventilated fabric.. Bees drink from potted plants and nasty rain buckets. I put out a self watering planter tray filled with stones and the bees were hitting it hard before the nectar started coming in, now very few bees.

Randy I have used the water off of water I melted down wax witch bees seem to take it even mixed 3 to 1 our nectar flow is slow now in Darlington S.C.
Alot of populise and honey in water helps for sure but if we had nectar I've seen them walk thru honey
Yes! When we use our turkey roaster to refine wax and the wax solidifies and cracks the bees will drink all that nasty water from under the wax as they can get to it. I usually break the wax to give them access.

How do they drink? Do they lap or suction the water? Do they prefer to land at the edge of a pond or creek? Do they drink on the fly? I will be trying to keep bee's at my desert property and will have a pond with an aeration fountain so I'm wondering if they would drink on the fly from the fountain or should I make sure there's a landing place where they can reach the water to drink. 🐝

my bees always drink water from the surface of my potted plants, sucking moisture from the dirt... Minerals....that's what they want.
