On this day in 1969 {June 11th} the John Wayne & Glen Campbell movie "True Grit" had its world premier
And exactly ten years later on June 11th, 1979 John Wayne passed away at the age of 72
    The film garnered two Academy Awards nominations; for Best Actor {which John Wayne won} & for Best Original Song {for the title song, lost to "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head"}
Glen Campbell sang the title song; it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart on July 26th & eventually it peaked at #35

Just a fantastic singer, guitar player, entertainer and actor. Listing to to him singing this song brings back a lot of memories from that time and sadness that he has passed but had left us with great songs to listen to.❤👍👍

A superb live performance of this wonderful song by Glen Campbell from the original version of the film "True Grit".The entire music score was exquisitely crafted by Elmer Bernstein, and the lyrics of the song were written by that very fine lyricist,Don Black. For those who have only seen the remake I would strongly recommend that you view both films. The Coen brothers make wonderful films,BUT the original was directed by the talented Henry Hathaway. Wayne's fight against cancer was "True Grit".

The song "True Grit" by Glen Campbell is the theme song for the 1969 film of the same name, starring John Wayne. The lyrics were written by Don Black, and the music was composed by Elmer Bernstein. Glen Campbell performed the vocals for the theme.
Here are the lyrics to "True Grit":
If you take a life, do you know what you'll give?
Odds are, you won't like what it is
When the storm arrives, would you be seen with me?
By the merciless eyes of deceit?
I've seen angels fall from blinding heights
But you yourself are nothing so divine
    Just next in line
Arm yourself because no one else here will save you
    The odds will betray you
    And I will replace you
You can't deny the prize, it may never fulfill you
    It longs to kill you
    Are you willing to die?
The coldest blood runs through my veins
    You know my name
If you come inside, things will not be the same
When you return to the night
If you think you've won, you never saw me change
The game that we've been playing
I've seen this diamond cut through harder men
Than you yourself, but if you must pretend
    You may meet your end
Arm yourself because no one else here will save you
    The odds will betray you
    And I will replace you
You can't deny the prize, it may never fulfill you
    It longs to kill you
    Are you willing to die?
The coldest blood runs through my veins
Try to hide your hand, forget how to feel
    (Forget how to feel)
Life is gone with just a spin of the wheel
    (Spin of the wheel)
Arm yourself because no one else here will save you
    The odds will betray you
    And I will replace you
You can't deny the prize, it may never fulfill you
    It longs to kill you
    Are you willing to die?
The coldest blood runs through my veins
    You know my name
    You know my name
    You know my name
    You know my name

@JustLovesGlen You are so lucky to see Glen live. It is so good to have a performer repeat a recording so well live and be so natural. I was working in Radio when this song came out and we hammered it but it did not chart very well.

Did they have hairspray in the cowboy days? I have to disagree with the crowd here, apparently Glen Campbell fans. John Wayne wasn't much of an actor, Jeff Bridges put him to shame..Glen Campbell looked like a 1970's country star landed in the old west without a hair out of place. Never a 5 o'clock shadow, it was silly You have to look hard to find a better couple of filmmakers then the Cohen Brothers and they wouldn't have made the film if they couldn't have improved it, and they did in spades.
