This literally told me nothing of how to find my correct size. What is the proper way to measure the foot then?

What do you do if a show doesn’t have a removable foot bed?

The Brannock devise is a great tool for finding your shoe size. The trouble is MOST people do not know how to use it or read and decipher the measurements they are reading on the device or how to cross reference those numbers with the width measurement of the device.
I had shoe stored for years measure my feet with the Brannock and could never get me the right shoe.
They would always cross reference the wrong number and try to put me in a shoe that was to narrow and then go up a size when it was to tight.
Later in life when I learned how to properly read and decipher the measurements on the device I was able to find a great fitting shoe that fit perfect and give me all the room I needed in the toe box with room for my toe to move out to the sides as they do normally when you walk without shoes.
I am now able to find a shoe that fits great for length and width with the room needed in the toe box but unfortunately I have a high crown to my instep even though I have a lower arch, so the shoes tend to be to shallow for a comfortable fit across the instep.
I used the advice you gave about removing the insole and standing on it for fit and this failed more times than not as it does not mean the insole and shape of the shoe is going to coincide with the natural flex of the shoe and may not align with the natural flex of the foot.
And also I had insoles my foot fit well within the footprint of the insole but when I put my foot into the shoe, the shoe pushed my foot to the inside off from the insole at the ball of the foot. because it was not a true representation to the flex point of the shoe.

Thanks for the comment! Glad to hear that you discovered what works for you! The Brannock device can be helpful for finding the right length and the right width at the ball of the foot, but imagine if we had a way to measure the shape and width at the tip of the toes, where most shoes are too narrow.

Does this rule hold for running shoes also? Or do I need more space at the front when standing on the insole?

A Brannock device has never given me a decent fitting shoe. It doesn't accurately measure width at all. At most it can give a rough idea of a starting point but honestly any experienced shoe salesman can do that by looking. It's a fairly useless measurement tool that is simply a piece of showmanship used to make customers believe there's some kind of medically sound reasoning to their shoe choice.

The Bannock Device is very helpful and has been around for a very very long time. Found in almost all shoe stores around the world. Not sure how you can say that it is wrong to use it. It is a tool to help approximate someone’s foot dimension, it might not be perfect but it works just find. If you think that you can create a new modern correct foot measuring device then create one. No one is going to be walking around with a shoe insert trying to find new shoes, a bit ridiculous frankly.
