Make sure to add some extra room for socks and inserts when you are trying to find your ideal shoe size. Another big thing to remember is that your foot swells almost 1 size on average throughout the day. Lastly if your shoes come in too big, follow this guide on how to make your shoe fit smaller! ruclips.net/video/mM13ytZZZDA/видео.html
We try to be specific and answer that in the video towards the end, hope the video is useful!
Michigan Foot Doctors hey thank you so much sir. 👍🏼
What if my finger is fatter than normal?
I'm a construction worker and I go to specialty store for construction boots. They have a special foot measuring instrument but the steel toe digs into my toes ALWAYS. How do you choose construction boots? Can you make a video How to choose boots? Thank you for your attention.
@@DrTomBiernacki I'm not good with sizing are US 11EE the same as US 7 1/2 in mens. I measured my feet and there 3½ wide and 10in long and is that close to 11EE I'd want them to be a few sizes bigger since I'm 14 and there for ww2 reenacting im joining the group next year so I want my feet to grow (I'll be 15 this year)
For anyone confused with the part of the video where he measures 11 3/4 on cardboard, rounds to 12, then reads 10 3/4 while using the sizing chart DO THIS!...
Take your exact foot measurements (without adding the finger width) and use that measurement with the size chart in the video...
The size chart he's using takes into account the extra room your shoe will provide. So no need to add the finger width.
Hope this helps 👍🏼
That's what I thought exactly!
When he started referencing the chart, I was thinking, "So, throw out everything you said about extra room then? The added thumb width, etc.?" lol
Good point. The demonstration with the cardboard and thumb width is probably a way of coming up with the shoe size directly without the chart, to add that extra 3/4 inch or so.
Thanks for this info..... I wear a 10 1/2 in a leather boot, was about to order 1/2 smaller size (10) to get a snug fit, but you have changed my mind helped me make the right decision ...Thanks

Great video. My size 9 (USA) casual shoes actually measure in at 11" and I've always worn size 8-1/2 to 9" shoes but my feet actually measure 10-1/2 without the extra finger. Shoe sizing is so arbitrary and ever after getting correct measurements each shoe company still fits differently.

I'm not sure if I did it right...
the shoes that I'm wearing are 11.5 US size Nike training shoes, and I feel just about right (or a little bit tight in width)
I just measured my feet based on the method from the video, which is 11 inches in length, add it up to 11 1/2, about 5 inches in width, and add it up to 5-5 1/2 inches. In this size of feet, I should wear 13 US size EEE shoes, which would be much bigger than what I wear now.
I also have a EE width, and it’s really frustrating to find a show for my needs. I’ve found that a wide toe box doesn’t necessarily mean the show will fit. My local shoe specialist said that I need a shoe with a 5” last, and most show companies make their last way below that. Recently Birkenstock downsized their 5” last in their Regular/Wides to 4 3/8”. As a result, I can’t even get my foot more than half way in the shoe, no matter how hard I try.
My second problem is that my feet pronate inward so I need arch support to prevent the pronation.
Third, any rise in the heel gives me a herniated disk, leaving me sore for weeks at a time, even after I’ve gone back to my old Birkies with the 5” last, which, as I said, is no longer made. I’m quite concerned about this.
Wow great video. Thank you!

turn the paper at an angle for extra length
I’m size 9.5 but my width is 4” because I fractured my foot a couple years ago and there’s a bone popping out about half an inch wider.
You started with a measurement of 12", then you wrote 11 and 3/4 on the cardboard, then you looked at the size chart and looked at sizes between 10 15/16" and 11 1/8".
For anyone trying to figure this out -- it looks like he measures 10 3/4" as his foot length and adds about 1/4" to get to what he looks at on the chart.
When you trace something make sure you hold the tracing utensil at the same angle throughout the trace for precision.
Yes, he says that at 3:35.
Another way of doing this if you already have the shoes or are going to the shoes store to try them on is, if the shoes hand removable insoles, take them out of the shoe, place them on the ground and step over them; then you will actually see how much extra space, if any you have left in the front of the shoe.
Shoe charts can be different, even on the same company's website, like at Reebok, I found two that were different. One said I was a 10.5 U.S. and the other said I was 9.5
Thank you, Doctor, I've been buying the wrong sneaker and shoe size for too many years

We are working hard every day to make better and more meaningful content! This is what keeps us going, for sure.
I like to wear my shoes much bigger. Like 2, 3, and sometimes 4 sizes bigger. And I have no true shoe size. I'm a 13½, and they don't have that size most places. Most places only go up to 12. So I take what I can get. And a lot of the times with the much bigger shoes, you get a great deal, and discount. So I might get a pair of size 16 shoes, that originally cost $100, for only $20. And I will always go bigger, not smaller with shoes. I like wiggle room, and I like my toes to be able to breathe. And I also like wide shoes, because they are more comfortable. That's why DC Court Graffik shoes are my absolute favorite.
Great input!
4 Sizes bigger? Bless you'r ankles/heels, which i think was a very important point in this video. You need good support around your ankle/heel too when wearing shoes.
Shoes come in alot of different sizes, and in alot of different needs. I've burned myself so many times buyin'g shoes online :)
@@soloslurk 4 sizes bigger is insane. I wear my shoes 1 size bigger and it fits fine. I could not imagine wearing 4 sizes bigger.
A finger thickness? Them are some seriously thick socks or your feet swell A LOT! That looks like having a size 10 show but swelling to a size 13. Never heard of or seen this. But your the "pro" , seriously. I learned something - maybe. I figure if you trace the outline while wearing socks and hold the pen vertical you will create an outline that is slightly larger than your foot to account for socks and any changes in foot size over the course of the day.
Also - measure BOTH feet. People who are right handed tend to lead with the right foot so it may be larger. In my case, I had an accident years ago and although I am right handed, my left foot (which was smashed by a car while riding a moped as a teenager) is slightly larger as a result. Obviously, order according to the larger foot.
Absolutely great tips and we did make an updated video clarifying these points!
The finger thickness is a about 1/2 centimeter but this is because most people wear shoes so tight they develop nail rubbing and your feet swell and flatten during the day, that is to take that into account.
I'm not sure if this will help to determine what size you are in terms of length because a lot of manufacturers have different sizing, but I do think this is a good way to tell if you have narrow, normal width or wide feet because it is relative. For me I'm a size 11 length wise and my width measurement is 4.6 which is right in between a medium (D) and wide (EE). It's probably best to err on the side of caution but it also depends on the type of shoe you buy some shoes might run wide or narrow. But at least now I know that my feet are slightly wider than average/normal.
I just did everything you said n my feet came out to a size 8 M (26cm), but when I checked a brannock device at the store it said my heel-to-toe is a 6.5, yet my heel-to-ball is an 8, I think. Should I go with a size 8?? Seems like there would be a lot of toe room. I just want my feet to stop hurting cuz I’m pretty sure I’ve been wearing the wrong size :’(
With the finger width-length, you said you were at about 12” but when you selected your shoe you apparently rounded down to 11 and selected and 11.5. I’m a size 10 with ver flat feet and I need to get this right.
It depends a lot on the shoe you order, a running shoe will give more room and a dress shirt is generally tighter. Most shoe companies don't follow the rules the more dress they get
I also found up to accommodate for orthotics, socks and other devices that can take up room. If you have a thing dress socks you won't have to go up as high.
thank you

If I have a EE wide foot will one of the orthodics that you linked to work, or are those just for a standard width? Thank you
I consulted a professional podiatrist and she measured BOTH my feet to custom make shoes.
None of us are symmetrical, as any professional shoemaker will tell you when you visit to have a custom last made.
Great tip!
How did you go from 11 3/4 ths actual size to to a 10 3/4 ths when you were on the chart.
I am confused about that as well.
I think that the chart he used already accounts for the extra room you need for your foot? I measured my feet, got 10.25 and added 0.5, but when I look at the chart, that puts me at a 10.5 shoe size. I have NEVER worn that size, ever. If I take my actual foot measurement, with no added half inch, I get the right size.
Michigan foot doctor, Would Approx 4.5-5 inches be considered wide ? A shoe I'm looking at has a wide option. Thanks
Thanks. I don't remember if I'm an E or a EE. But with what I know now I think I will be fine going with a EE. Do you know what it means when a company says that a toe box on a particular model is larger than another one?
A toe box is where your toes go, they can come in many different shapes, it's like the wild west!
@@DrTomBiernacki yeah I'm kind of starting to realize that. Thank you.

Is shoe break-in and stretching not something to consider? I’ve heard it said that, for example, your leather shoes or boots might feel too tight but they’ll break in and feel proper later.
I also remember the Army measuring my foot and issuing me combat boots. They were so stiff and snug initially that they didn’t even let us lace them up for the first week or so. Eventually, they felt like moccasins. 👍🏻
That makes me think the shoe material (and stretching) is irrelevant. What’s the verdict on that, doc?
Another reason why the US non-metric system is confusing. But to each its own and thanks for the tips.
F*uck the USA with their idiotic measurement system for everything. What a joke. Just act normal like the other countries.

Hello I have a question? I have very very wide feet 4 EEEE with fat wide toe. Depends on what I'm doing I do most things barefooted because I go through Footwear like crazy. I wear flip-flops but I have to fight to put them on because my foot is wider than the straps.( it's embarrassing sometimes) my friends call me wide foot Bandit. Is there anyway to shrink the wideness of the foot. And another thing. When I bought my flips flops in 2 months I wore the footbed out and I had a nice wide footprint on the flip flops. Is this normal. The souls were still new and show no wear. I'm surprised that my flip-flops are still holding up I thought that would have blown them out because my foot is so wide. Also is it normal to have fat toes just because your foot wide. Thank you and you have a nice day.

Returning items just means my feet keep going in painful worn out shoes. A link to the shoe size chart you are using would be most helpful though because I got 10000 results & every one I open has been useless for me...Signed,... My Poor Feet
do you have video on badminton shoe selection ?
I find this tutorial confusing because using this method my foot measured 11 5/8" in length and 4 7/8" in width (with the added thumb widths/lengths).
According to the size charts, my shoe size would be about a size 13 EE (wide) to 13.5 EE.
My actual shoe/sneaker size which I wear ranges from a 7 1/2 EE to an 8 EE or even a 9 (depending upon the shoe manufacturer and material used).
Am I calculating incorrectly?
A size 13 EE or 13.5 EE would be an extraordinary amount of toe room.
I have the same question. I measure 10 3/8. But I fit perfectly fine into an 8 1/2.
Anyone is capable of measuring foot size, but the problem lies with the numerous varying size conversion charts not how one measures their foot, one for Adidas one for Nike on a simple search, even if there was one standard size chart, there is still no uniformity. Shoe sales must have gone through the roof due to this dilemma.
Your so cute!! info. helpful too!!!!
Thanks!
I normally wear a size 45 EU, so i measured my feet but it was compered to the number shown in the size charts (26cm which would be equal to a size 40.5 EU), then i also asked my mother to measure her foot and it was somehow exactly the same length (note: she wears a size 40 EU) and then I also asked my brother (45 EU) and dad (45-46 EU) to measure too and the results were 26.5 and 27 cm respectively. None of that makes any help and I cant figure out what size I should actually get for the specific shoe size. Any help? Am I doing something wrong ?
Frustratingly, my width and length don't match up so either my shoes aren't wide enough but fit length wise or aren't the right length but fit in the width. Any suggestions?
If the foot gets too wide we usually see success with insoles. The insoles prevent the foot from flattening out as much and getting wider.
Always confused about width - sheesh - tight hips and hamstrings is new connection idea - thanks
adding and then subtracting arbitrary numbers pretty much insures that you will end up having no idea what your actual shoe size is
Please post a link to a printable online size chart. The ones I found were not printable. Thank you.

Great. I'm toe percent % Greek.
How do you measure for shoe volume?
My feet are different sizes. My right is half size bigger. I met someone with 2 full size difference.
Absolutely, there are 2 reasons that this could happen, with one being very easily correctable:
1) Your foot is broken and severely arthritic by a trauma or a congenital defect (this is very rare).
2) You are tight on one leg compared to the other(in your calf or hamstring or hip), and your foot turns out more when you stand. This can be due to knee, hip or back pain. An orthotic combined with stretching will help that along. These can really be improved!
@Eatchabeans I am having that same problem except my left is a half a size bigger than my right.
I see the instep of your foot goes almost the same width as your big toe. My big toe goes MUCH wider than my instep. So, do I measure instead from the big toe rather than the instep, please?

I have a question is size 7 in women's bigger than size 6 in youth?
I don't understand the foot size/measurement chart you're using, some others I'm looking at are almost a size to a size and a half off.... like a foot that's 9 inch length, on the chart I have it says the size is 7.5.....On the chart you have it would be more like a 6....Why the drastic difference in size charts. Where did you get this particular chart?
Thats why measuring is usless because as you said a companys size 11 is anothers sice 9. Blame the shoe companys for not knowing how to use a tape measure. Same with jeans, when jeans of the same size have 2" difference in length it would be cheaper and easier if they do not print sizes on it. ...

Today I tried measuring my foot and I got 11 inches which is weird since I wear a size 14 shoe that feels pretty good.
Yeah same, I wear a 12 shoe and its super tight I could move up to a .5 probably 13 but when I measured with the paper Im like 10.5
I feel attacked when he said people think they need a super wide shoe when my width measures to a little over 4 1/2 inches. lol

So here my question: should i size up for bunion?
Dang i went and got measured as a 5.5 in store on my largest foot. Using this I measured 7.5!!! Is this normal?? Both measured in the evening. I tried 7s and theres a lot of room in front of my biggest toe. How much room is too much?

Mines one is 12. Just like a ruler
is it common for one foot to be larger than the other?
My foot fingers are so short how to increase plz tell me sir
I measure 10 3/8. But I fit perfectly into 8 1/2?
Idk if I did this right. I’ve been wearing size 14’s for years now. I wa skits curious to see my size, and according to charts I should be in a 12 and a half...and I know my foot will not fit in that size of shoe
Yh. Apparently I’m a UK size 9 according to many charts but I genuinely can’t fit into those. My feet are 27.5cm long and I fit perfectly into 10.5-11.
Whats your foot lenght bro, if you wear a size 14?
What website did u use for the size chart
Just general Google charting, just look up shoe sizes and shoe size conversions!
