This was very helpful. My poor 85 year old Grandmother never has shoes that actually fit because she can't go in to the shoe store personally. She's currently in the hospital after major surgery, so I hope that we can do this and I know that having a nice, properly fitting pair of shoes will do wonders for her outlook! Measure both feet. If one is larger or wider then order that size and width. Otherwise you may end up with a shoe on one of your feet that is too short or too narrow.

I read somewhere that it's a good idea to measure feet at the end of the day as most people's feet swell some over the course of the day...also to wear whatever socks you plan on wearing with the shoes when tracing the foot, cuz depending on what kinda socks you like it could add a bit extra size (;
Edit: p.s. Found your tidbit at the end very interesting...that it's semi common for feet to grow half a size every decade after 40. I did not know that! :o

I did and it still did not fit,( my sister was like umm this is not going to trace correctly with your toes & heel off the paper) ..lol I guess i will use longer paper or cardboard from a box..
I had the same problem, but cardboard was an easy solution.
use a legal pad instead of a post it note. ;)

@@bw5187 terribly, had to return them or I don’t think i was able to because i had used them for work, they were way too big. so far i’m using keens and needed to just recently get better memory foam inserts from amazon.
@@CastIronGinger I have just figured out that removing the factory insole actually makes the shoes fit better. Almost like we've been brainwashed into thinking you need an insole. A custom insole is of course nice to have if your shoes are not comfortable or you actually need the insoles.

My feet have gone up 2 sizes since my teens. Swelling, gaining/losing weight, and over all getting beat down by life has stretched out my feet. 😅I’m definitely not blessed with cute small feet. Mine are almost the same size as my husband’s. Sometimes when we both like the same shoe, I order it in my husband’s shoe size so he can wear them when he wants to. I just throw an insole or two into the shoe if it’s loose on me from him stretching them out. 😅
I have long toes so if I order the correct length the widest part of my foot (ball) will not line up with the widest part of the shoe.
some websites are asking for your "shoes size" instead of "feet size" which makes it even more confusing. The shoes are obviously bigger than your own feet.
Good tips and common sense instructions. But if you take these ‘steps’ to measure your feet carefully, order the size indicated, and the shoes may or may not fit. Between the manufacturing processes and conversion between US and metric (even though this should be simple math), there are discrepancies. Athletic shoes are the worst. A ‘D’ width in one shoe is worthless if the toe box tapers so drastically that your toes get crunched. So make sure you can return the shoes if they don’t fit.

My feet are 28 cm. An online shoe size converter says I’m UK size 9 but size 9 is too small. Size 11 is perfect but apparently I ain’t a size 11. I don’t get it.

And what brand of shoe are you wearing coz not all shoe brand does not have the exact size like us 8 of filas and nikes as example.

I see many of these foot tracing videos. 99% have the same error. should place the edge of the paper against a wall and then your heel against the wall. then measure from edge of paper. eliminates the chance of error on that end. then hold a ruler square against the longest toe, pull your foot away and mark the inside edge of the ruler. this is now accurate to within 1/8" which is a half shoe size. Why we have such incremental measurements for shoe size has never made sense to me.
I think it's crazy that we measure shoes down to a 1/8" fit making only a half size difference. 11 1/8" is a size 11.5 and 11 1/4" is a 12. So just a 1/4" is a full shoe size difference do we really need half sizes??. Especially considering different brands of shoes can differ from these standards and even within the same brand.Or even other charts found on line can have very minor differences. Case in point, my 11 1/4" foot makes me a size 12. On one particular Asics running shoe, a 12 gives me the thumb width toe room recommended (even though it's customary to buy running shoes 1/2 size up) and yet, a different model Asics shoe also in 12 gives me no wiggle room. They "feel" like an 11, no thumb room at all. Oredering shoes online is a fit crapshoot. I can order the same brand/model running shoe and know I'm ok, until the tweak the model and that could changed the fitment. I also have a 4 1/4 width, that based on the chart referenced in this video is a D. All my life I thought I was a D. But on a Brannock Device, my width is right in the middle of a B/C. That's a 1/2" smaller than a D. When I lace dress shoes the material over the tongue pulls together and meets. On my running shoes the material bunches slightly which tells me after all these years the Brannock Device is right. I'm not a D, I'm a B/C but the chart still says I am a D. I think we need to trash the whole shoe size thing and go by actual inches measurements.If your foot is 11 inches, buy a 12 inch shoe to have room. My waist is 34". I buy pants with a 34" waste. Seems so simple doesn't it?

This video along with Amazooon try before you buy really helped me get a better fit. Turns out I am 11 wide not 12 normal. Although I feel less manly, my feet are happier now :)

In Hungary, you can't buy shoes with different width size. All shoes too narrow for me and some of shoes too flat. If I want good width, I could need two size bigger shoe, but that too long for me. :(

For me, I always buy US 12 regardless of brands. Sometimes they fit well, sometimes not. Buying shoes online is a gamble

Yes, just make sure you move your foot away from the observer fast enough to have the blue color shift below the visible spectrum, then don't forget to account for the length contraction due to relativity ;P

I ended up with 6 1/2 6e always being told to wear a 6 or 6 1/2 wide but they never fit quite right always too tight on top or on the sides. Hurt my arches and everything this sure explains a lot. Stores are just looking to sell instead of thinking about your health.
I'm a 3E at the most conservative. No wonder I have such trouble fitting into Medium shoes. Many sizes to small!

This is very wrong. I did this with both feet. It indicated by their charts I should wear a size 9.5 shoe. I also have a brannock device to measure my foot. It indicates I should wear a size 8. That's a huge difference. I trust the brannock device's measurement a whole lot more than just tracing my foot on a piece of paper!

this is wrong. the way you traced your feet did not get the edge of the protruding heel making an error of about 1.5cm to 2cm.
"after the age of 40" haha, or in your 20s, if you convert to barefoot/minimalist shoes. Mine got half a size bigger in under three years
I read that short foot exercises can shrink your feet. Being size 9 width D, my feet might look more compact in a few years if I start now.
On the page I found this on it's a bit hard to find the length chart, you might want to make it more obvious

This is wrong. Simply tracing around the base of your foot does not account for your protruding heel.
You may need custom made shoes if you have weird feet. Or maybe go to a shoe store and try some on...!! I know that is a unique idea but it may help.
Trying on shoes in a store won't help you buy online. I wear different sizes depending on the brand. I like Jeff Flower's comment about just using the actual measurement of your foot rather than the brand's sizing. If your foot is 9" then the size should be 9 period.

Thank you for the great and informative video. Do you happen to have a shoe size chart for Wolverine? I have a pair of Wolverine boots that fit pretty good that are size 11D. I ordered another pair size 10½D that are a bit too tight and small. The only other sizes are 11D or 11EE. What are your thoughts and recommendations? Please advise.

This is all good until you find that every manufactures shoes vary in sizing, which is a total bummer.
put your foot on a tape measure, if it says your foot is 10 inches, then buy a size 10

And if you are home alone (like me) with no one to measure for you, make a bunch of lines on a piece of paper, then stand on it, look down and figure out which lines are the ones for your foot--and you will have taken your own width and length!
The instructions on your web site make it clear you are supposed to measure BOTH feet. Too bad your video takes such a huge shortcut.

No mention of arch length? Not cool. That metal device she cast aside will tell you that you should measure your heel-toe length, AND your arch length, and you should be wearing the larger of the two corresponding sizes. Otherwise you may be forcing your foot to bend in the wrong place. Like I did for years, giving me arthritis.

I went out to 3 different stores, one didn't have the metal device & the other 2 didn't want to measure because of the virus even though I had thick socks on cause I need a new pair of sneakers, also the employee telling me this wasn't wearing a mask.

This is definitely inaccurate, I measured and my girl measured my foot, comes out to 9 3/4, according to this chart thats a size 7.5 in mens.... umm yeah that's not gonna happen, all my shoes are size 9.5-10
I've been wearing flip flops for decades because I couldn't find any shoes that fit me properly.
My podiatrist sent me to Track Shack after I tore a ligament in my foot. Wanted me to buy a shoe that doesn't have too much flex in the sole until this healed up. There, I wear a size 9.5 4E in men's. That cost me $160 and I'm on a fixed income and insurance doesn't cover it.
After wearing the shoes for a month, I could probably go a size wider. Don't know if they make them or not. But the stupid shoe charts online show that I'm probably supposed to wear a size 11 Women's. Well, I know that I've bought some size 11's and that's supposed to get me a wider shoe and they don't fit lengthways. Way too long in some of those shoes they sell at Walmart and such.
But I'll probably never find a women's shoe that fits properly unless I can buy them in person.
I bought a Chinese Leather Patcher sewing machine. It's hand crank and got it on Ebay. I am going to make my own shoes. The cost of materials alone is going to save me tons of money. You can make shoes from leather, upholstery fabric and plain canvas. And make NICE ones that aren't ugly boats!
So, you might want to look into that.

I measured mine correctly carefully, against a wall, because I was getting custom shoes (not doing what they did at the back of the ankle) and the size chart is pretty dead on recommending 39-40. I get either depending on brand/model and how much sock room I need.

are each shoe tailored to thee unique size of each foot, more specifically my left foot measure 10 ½" but my right for mearsurse at 10.0 on the nose. Would I get 2 different sized shoes to accurately fit my feet one set of 10 ½ shoethat accommodate both feet or a set measured in between at 10 ¼ ...a little snug for one and a liitle loose for the outher.
