@AllOuttaBubblegum You don't need to be an Opera Singer to be able to break glass. Mythbusters did the glass-breaking-with-sound myth and they brought in a heavy metal rocker to do it (think Steven Tyler from Aerosmith type singer).
As the son of a former opera singer we we wouldn't scare or prank our mother because the ensuing scream was literally painful. Even 10 years after she stopped performing she could still make your ears ring from across the house.
I live neighbor to a former opera singer, soprano, a lady at 85, she premiered her career 1961. Anyway, before the pandemic she used to sing piecies from charactars she has played as active on eldery homes, weddings etc. At one occasion two years ago we and another neighbor were having coffee (Swedish "fika", you can google it nowadays!) at her place. She was telling about her times at different opera houses, and I had never heard her singing and asked if she could sing something, just a short part. She shone up in her face "Oh, of course I can!" She didn't need "sing up" her voice, just cleared her throat. And started to sing, from the death scene in Puccini's La Bohème. I was sittning just opposite to her at the table. Little did I know! 🤣🤣🤣! I think I had a new hair style; slicked back! A face lift, my skin usually covering my cheeks was curled back over my ears. My ears... I LITERALLY had reduced hearing the rest of that day. She sung without a flaw in the pitch, crystal clear. Earlier this summer I heard her singing again. Now she she went to another room and did a couple of "voice strechings" as she calls it. She excused herself, she hadn't sung a note for a year, and should have needed at least 20 minutes warm up, but she sung, not 100 % clear nor in pitch, the latter was because of the stiff vocal cords. Yet VERY impressive, scared the "newbies" 😂 anyway! So yes, if a woman at that age, just singing once in a while, can have that power... No one who hasn't been near an opera singer can IMAGEN!! If she /he is about to sing, I recommend AT LEAST a 2 - 2.5 meters / 10 foot distance! And be prepared for a force!! 😁
Elizabeth is one of a kind. She is impressive and expressive. I love the faces she does while listening to her reactions. She makes you feel that's a good day with a single smile. Elizabeth+Nightwish songs, you can't go wrong with that.
I like that she remained professional, calming touching him, even while laughing at his reaction, then approving when the decided to pull her mic back, but she kept singing, that beautiful voice lifting those that hear it. I once met a woman who sang in the chorus of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. I asked her how her voice differed from someone like Barbra Streisand or another broadway singer. She said that singers of that type often have beautiful voices but they do not have the power to fill an opera house. I asked her if this ability was the result of training and she told me that only some singers have voices that are capable of singing that loudly. But in order to achieve their full potential it requires many years of disciplined study and practice. So Elizabeth's beautiful voice is a gift that she has worked hard to develop.

My recollection was that the album received poor notices from classical reviewers but I thought this would be an opportunity to get the opinion of a genuine professional. She indicated that Streisand's voice was not capable of the power and volume that are required to sing opera. But curiously enough before I wrote this reply I looked up the name of the album. In the Wikipedia entry about it they quoted Leonard Bernstein who spoke very highly of her efforts. Of course that could just be one celebrity praising another. But apparently only certain individuals who have the necessary lung capacity and strength in their diaphragm are able to be heard over an orchestra playing at full volume in an opera house.
I’m pretty sure Tom Jones could fill an opera house. That’s just one example. But what you wrote makes it sound like only opera singers work hard at their craft. Most singers, those that have long careers, work very hard to be able to sing at a high level. Take Tony Bennet., for instance. He practiced 4-6 hours a day, much like the best instrumentalists do. Well, the voice is an instrument after all. Trust me, with all the allergens and other environmental factors that can affect one’s voice these days , a good singer, be they rock, blues, jazz or opera, has to work very hard to keep their voice healthy. And the same warm up routines that opera singers use are used by almost all successful singers, no matter what style.

Was a vocal performance major in college and my freshman voice teacher was the artist in residence at the University. I had taken voice for sometime, but never with a teacher of his reputation and experience. I remember our first lesson together, I was blown away by his unbelievable resonance. He would demonstrate something for me and when he was done the strings on the grand piano I was standing next to would still be humming because of the power of his voice.
So she DOES sing! I've watched reviews of musical artists, but, in her reviews she never hints at her incredible ability to sing like that. Very impressive!

Been there. I was a professional ballet dancer hired to work for an opera company. First rehearsal, two of us dancers were positioned one on either side of the mezzo. I almost fell over when she hit her opening note.

For eg I try to sing the opera aloudler for do not bothering my neighbours but it s impossible :))) it sounds too loudly. :))) once I ve been exercising home some exercises from the singing course and one neighbour asked if I m sing because he was able to follow the sound from the upper levels of mine. :))))

I too had no idea the power of opera singers until I played a part in Amahl and the Night Visitors stage play. There were three pro opera singers and one of them had "won the Met." I could feel it in my whole body when he was singing back stage to warm up and I was just a few feet away. The other two singers were not far off from him either. It was a fairly profound experience.
My mom's a contralto who sang Gilbert & Sullivan on the stage for 15 years. I used to accompany her on the piano at home for rehearsal, and I made her stand in the next room so my ears wouldn't ring. And for context, I'm an artillery officer. Don't ever underestimate the power of someone who sings. Especially women.
People are so used to singers that need a microphone that they are literally unprepared for the raw sound coming from a trained operatic soprano. They are taught from day 1 to project across an entire theatre and be heard from front row to back, over the sound of an orchestra. It's the genre that needs a microphone, not the singers per se. Professional opera singers also use microphones when singing with the same kinds of instruments and speakers that newer genres do. Amplified instruments and giant speakers make it completely impossible to match resonance or compete with volume like you can with an unamplified orchestra, so singers in genres where those are used don't have any reason to get training on volume-boosting techniques, they can't possibly work for them. Well, except that it's very cool to be able to do. I'm just an amateur choral singer and I would still like to get operatic volume just for fun, but it's never going to help me in my performances either, because of our small church venues with a single piano or harp accompaniment :P
But ask them to sing a pop song and it will rip you face off lol. Worked with a few classically trained singers who tried to go mainstream, and it is definitely a much different craft and technique. Very hard to go back and forth as the voice gets developed for completely different things.

Opera singing is quite safe, much easier on the vocal cords.

I heard my first opera singer live at a restaurant. She was a server and it was closing time. As they cleared tables and we sipped our wine, she began singing. I felt like I was hit in the heart with an arrow. It shook me. She was an amateur, so she said. I was crying. It was very impactful. Live is much better than on a recording.
I wouldn't have wanted to meet her, especially if she was single. If I were a manager, I'd ruin her night (i.e. yell at her, write her up). I work at a grocery store. Many co-workers and people are lucky that I'm not a manager.

Input channels normally have protection in the form of a compressor or AGC circuit. These take time to act, and the subsequent distortion adds a harshness to the beginning of a loud note. You can drive a dynamic mike into distortion, probably kick drum territory. Condenser mics when over-driven will 'stick' and go silent. Ribbon mics can be damaged by loud, low notes. The ribbon can be blown out. Treat mics with respect and these problems will never arise. Set input levels to sensible numbers (-12dB VU for example) and you won't confuse the input circuitry and ADC's.

I've only started watching The Charismatic Voice recently, and I love it, but I have to say, Elizabeth seems like a very intense human being. I thought she was turning it up a bit for her show, but after watching her here, no, I think that's just who she is.

Opera singing was, after all, invented to be heard over a live orchestra in a large theatre, long before microphones. That's also why she says that she does not usually sing with a microphone - you have to change the technique with a microphone.
Oh that was good! I've watched Elisabeth's channel for a few months and never heard her sing though she kept saying she was an Opera singer. Then she released her 100k sub video and she belted something out. Wow, that was some vocal power!

Wow! I've been watching her reaction videos and she is as mesmerizing as the vocalists she is reacting too. I have never heard her sing but her credibility(which was already high) just went up ten fold!
I know the problem I studied the basics of singing with a professional opera singer (A Bass) from Scottish Opera chorus and about 12 years later had the pleasure of singing the duet "As Long as You're Mine" from the musical "Wicked" with Broadway and West End star Kerry Ellis. Of course, being a modern electronically amplified concert there was a large sound system including a front of hjouse PA system and onstage monitonitors. To make sure that I didn't damage everbody's hearing I ended up holding the very expensive Shure wireless microphone handset 18 inches to 2 feet away from my mouth!
Hehe your reaction reminds me of a related experience I had way back in kindergarden. Back then one of the staff had the "great" idea, of introducing/exposing all us 5-6 years olds to an opera singer. To inject some culture into us or something. They gathered us all together at the assembly area, where we got a short intro to various arias and shocked some of us to the core. Needless to say it must have been the most reluctant crowd she had ever performed for, most of us were clasping our ears and holding on for dear life. When she was done we all scampered away as fast as we could, to the sound of her beeing very annoyed about how rude we were, and the staff trying to placate her. Took a looong time for me to ever approach and appreciate opera, despite my grandmother having done opera in her youth :-)

Love this. My son is a Grad-Student in the Opera program at U of Illinois. Alas, he won't be breaking glass since he's a Baritone/Bass. Recently he had to stand in for a Musical Theater singer that was ill. Needless to say, they had to adjust the gain on the microphones for him otherwisehe would've blown their speakers. And, thankfully, he doesn't have to worry about being jumped in an alley. He's 6'6" and weighs 400lbs. He's also a 2x State wrestling qualifier.
I worked for the opera in Honolulu and my job was up in the light booth at the top of the concert hall in back of the audience. One afternoon I was walking up to the booth and one singer was on stage just warming up to an empty house. I was absolutely amazed at how loud she was. There was no sound reinforcement turned on, it was just her voice, and the wonderful acoustics of that concert hall.
I've been watching her videos for a few years now and I just love how her reactions, and the way she speaks, and gets excited in this are just as the same as she gets in (or on? or by? idk, sorry) her videos haha
Sean looks a bit confused here when Elizabeth starts singing....I would have fallen in love instantly with her voice (and her)... :-) Opera singers should do this more often, mingle with the crowd, offer to sing along, and then stun the audience !
I was backstage at some joint in St Louis with a friend picking up his girlfriend after her performance of Sweeney Todd, and the follow-up was an opera performance. Even backstage when the dude belted out that opener, you feel that shit in your KNEES. I always thought they were just singing loudly but no...it is so much more impressive. And man, her voice is so beautiful....I can only imagine what it must have been like right there beside her.
It's so fun after listening to Elizabeth to watch this and knowing what she is capable of as a professional singer. That giant Soprano Voice she has and knowing she is pulling back singing here and just having some fun with her skills and stunning voice is hilarious because she could have blown that guy off of his seat if she felt like it. I don’t think many people know how powerful a voice opera singers have. I used to work with a colleague who is an opera singer. He was asked to take part in an event that was going to be broadcast, the sound guys asked him to back it off because he was overwhelming the sound equipment.

Having learned this years ago, when accompanying an opera singer on the piano, never allow them to stand right behind you. My ears were ringing the one time I allowed this.
Use my organ (any kind, especially traditional pipe) analogy. Elizabeth is the human version of that atrocity. She must be bipolar or ADHD (some shit in her head).
Maybe partly deliberate to give her voice a rest and not wear out her vocal cords. I know most singers avoid getting into long conversations inbetween performances for this reason.
That was friggin' AWESOME!! Regarding breaking glass: Glass has "plastic elasticity". It can expand and contract to a certain level, beyond that, it breaks. So, any singer with a sufficient volume and fast wide vibrato can do it..
Wow- when I was younger, I played a lot of blues with my dad and we often played a Bill Withers piece out of A minor- my dad used to tell me "Let that minor soak down in your soul son." I would say this young lady let it soak in deep- well done mam. Bellissimo!

Been there. I was a professional ballet dancer hired to work for an opera company. First rehearsal, two of us dancers were positioned one on either side of the mezzo. I almost fell over when she hit her opening note.

For eg I try to sing the opera aloudler for do not bothering my neighbours but it s impossible :))) it sounds too loudly. :))) once I ve been exercising home some exercises from the singing course and one neighbour asked if I m sing because he was able to follow the sound from the upper levels of mine. :))))

I too had no idea the power of opera singers until I played a part in Amahl and the Night Visitors stage play. There were three pro opera singers and one of them had "won the Met." I could feel it in my whole body when he was singing back stage to warm up and I was just a few feet away. The other two singers were not far off from him either. It was a fairly profound experience.

My mom's a contralto who sang Gilbert & Sullivan on the stage for 15 years. I used to accompany her on the piano at home for rehearsal, and I made her stand in the next room so my ears wouldn't ring. And for context, I'm an artillery officer. Don't ever underestimate the power of someone who sings. Especially women.
People are so used to singers that need a microphone that they are literally unprepared for the raw sound coming from a trained operatic soprano. They are taught from day 1 to project across an entire theatre and be heard from front row to back, over the sound of an orchestra. I'm surprised this man does not have a serious case of Tinnitus after that. Also, Elizabeth - the Disney Princess of Ytube Reactors ♥
It's the genre that needs a microphone, not the singers per se. Professional opera singers also use microphones when singing with the same kinds of instruments and speakers that newer genres do. Amplified instruments and giant speakers make it completely impossible to match resonance or compete with volume like you can with an unamplified orchestra, so singers in genres where those are used don't have any reason to get training on volume-boosting techniques, they can't possibly work for them. Well, except that it's very cool to be able to do. I'm just an amateur choral singer and I would still like to get operatic volume just for fun, but it's never going to help me in my performances either, because of our small church venues with a single piano or harp accompaniment :P
But ask them to sing a pop song and it will rip you face off lol. Worked with a few classically trained singers who tried to go mainstream, and it is definitely a much different craft and technique. Very hard to go back and forth as the voice gets developed for completely different things.

As far as I know it is hard for many opera singers to sing pop songs because those songs require the use of many singing techniques opera singers are not used to, and many of them hurt their vocal cords trying to sing pop songs. Opera singing is quite safe, much easier on the vocal cords.

I heard my first opera singer live at a restaurant. She was a server and it was closing time. As they cleared tables and we sipped our wine, she began singing. I felt like I was hit in the heart with an arrow. It shook me. She was an amateur, so she said. I was crying. It was very impactful. Live is much better than on a recording.
I wouldn't have wanted to meet her, especially if she was single. If I were a manager, I'd ruin her night (i.e. yell at her, write her up). I work at a grocery store. Many co-workers and people are lucky that I'm not a manager.

Input channels normally have protection in the form of a compressor or AGC circuit. These take time to act, and the subsequent distortion adds a harshness to the beginning of a loud note. You can drive a dynamic mike into distortion, probably kick drum territory. Condenser mics when over-driven will 'stick' and go silent. Ribbon mics can be damaged by loud, low notes. The ribbon can be blown out. Treat mics with respect and these problems will never arise. Set input levels to sensible numbers (-12dB VU for example) and you won't confuse the input circuitry and ADC's.

I've only started watching The Charismatic Voice recently, and I love it, but I have to say, Elizabeth seems like a very intense human being. I thought she was turning it up a bit for her show, but after watching her here, no, I think that's just who she is.
That's why Rolando Villazón deserves mad respect for taking the full blast of Anna Netrebko's voice straight to his face from about a foot away -- without even flinching.

Opera singing was, after all, invented to be heard over a live orchestra in a large theatre, long before microphones. That's also why she says that she does not usually sing with a microphone - you have to change the technique with a microphone.

Loved the video! And I, too, was blown away by the power of Elizabeth's voice - it jumped out even though the computer screen! I was fascinated by what you & Elizabeth were saying about the need for an "enemy".- I would say a "worthy opponent" rather than an enemy, & it set me thinking about how grateful I am for the opponents that I have had in my life, both for what they have taught me about myself - and, more importantly, how they have forced me to grow. Thanks for opening up this discussion - it really made me think.

I had RUclips suggest this one to me, and kind of chuckled at the title. Then I noticed Elizabeth in the thumbnail then HAD to click. I've followed her channel for quite a while, so I knew this was going to be good.
Wow! I've been watching her reaction videos and she is as mesmerizing as the vocalists she is reacting too. I have never heard her sing but her credibility(which was already high) just went up ten fold!

I know the problem I studied the basics of singing with a professional opera singer (A Bass) from Scottish Opera chorus and about 12 years later had the pleasure of singing the duet "As Long as You're Mine" from the musical "Wicked" with Broadway and West End star Kerry Ellis. Of course, being a modern electronically amplified concert there was a large sound system including a front of hjouse PA system and onstage monitonitors. To make sure that I didn't damage everbody's hearing I ended up holding the very expensive Shure wireless microphone handset 18 inches to 2 feet away from my mouth!
Hehe your reaction reminds me of a related experience I had way back in kindergarden.
Back then one of the staff had the "great" idea, of introducing/exposing all us 5-6 years olds to an opera singer. To inject some culture into us or something. They gathered us all together at the assembly area, where we got a short intro to various arias and shocked some of us to the core.
Needless to say it must have been the most reluctant crowd she had ever performed for, most of us were clasping our ears and holding on for dear life. When she was done we all scampered away as fast as we could, to the sound of her beeing very annoyed about how rude we were, and the staff trying to placate her.
Took a looong time for me to ever approach and appreciate opera, despite my grandmother having done opera in her youth :-)

Love this. My son is a Grad-Student in the Opera program at U of Illinois. Alas, he won't be breaking glass since he's a Baritone/Bass. Recently he had to stand in for a Musical Theater singer that was ill. Needless to say, they had to adjust the gain on the microphones for him otherwisehe would've blown their speakers. And, thankfully, he doesn't have to worry about being jumped in an alley. He's 6'6" and weighs 400lbs. He's also a 2x State wrestling qualifier.
I worked for the opera in Honolulu and my job was up in the light booth at the top of the concert hall in back of the audience. One afternoon I was walking up to the booth and one singer was on stage just warming up to an empty house. I was absolutely amazed at how loud she was. There was no sound reinforcement turned on, it was just her voice, and the wonderful acoustics of that concert hall.
I've been watching her videos for a few years now and I just love how her reactions, and the way she speaks, and gets excited in this are just as the same as she gets in (or on? or by? idk, sorry) her videos haha
I like to imagine the microphone was walking away on its own, as if to say, “Yeah, I’m not having any part of this. You do you.”

I was backstage at some joint in St Louis with a friend picking up his girlfriend after her performance of Sweeney Todd, and the follow-up was an opera performance. Even backstage when the dude belted out that opener, you feel that shit in your KNEES. I always thought they were just singing loudly but no...it is so much more impressive.
And man, her voice is so beautiful....I can only imagine what it must have been like right there beside her.
It's so fun after listening to Elizabeth to watch this and knowing what she is capable of as a professional singer. That giant Soprano Voice she has and knowing she is pulling back singing here and just having some fun with her skills and stunning voice is hilarious because she could have blown that guy off of his seat if she felt like it. Great control of her voice and a hilarious way to introduce herself to someone who doesn't know who they are talking to as a singer!!!

I don’t think many people know how powerful a voice opera singers have. I used to work with a colleague who is an opera singer. He was asked to take part in an event that was going to be broadcast, the sound guys asked him to back it off because he was overwhelming the sound equipment.

Having learned this years ago, when accompanying an opera singer on the piano, never allow them to stand right behind you. My ears were ringing the one time I allowed this.

Maybe partly deliberate to give her voice a rest and not wear out her vocal cords. I know most singers avoid getting into long conversations inbetween performances for this reason.

Glass has "plastic elasticity".
It can expand and contract to a certain level, beyond that, it breaks.
So, any singer with a sufficient volume and fast wide vibrato can do it..
