You have no idea how deep the Zappa rabbit hole is...its almost infinite
Zappa has released some 113 albums and was probably the most important composer of our time. He wrote rock, orchestrated music, electronic, punk, funk, jazz, instrumental, etc. This song is not representative of the true Frank. Try RDNZL, Inca Roads, Pygmy Twylyte, Village of the Sun, Echidna's Arf (of You) and Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?
Other good songs are Peaches en Ragalia, Holiday in Berlin, Full Blown, The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue, Zoomby Woof, I am the Slime
Agreed - "like totally"
The Roxy band, I think is the finest Zappa band and might be the finest touring band of musicians ever.
@Frankincensed - There are currently 119 officials releases available: www.donlope.net/fz/lyrics/index.html
@@Frunobulax74 Added one last week! (88 final US concert show)
This song is not representative of Frank Zappa's talent and ability. He's actually quite the accomplished composer.
This is exactly shows all of his talents
@@williammoore841 I don't think it's a great recording. Certainly not the song I would pick if I was trying to demonstrate to all of Frank Zappa's skills to someonewho may only hear one song.
No, it’s not.
Zappa was garbage
@marlon Thank you Mr. Helper troll for responding to a comment from a year ago,LOL.
Zappa is a musician who will totally amaze you. He is a satirist, social commentator, musical genius, prolific guitarist, button pusher, and generally a fun person. His band is about as good as you will find in modern rock; and as a musician, you will simply be left speechless as to their ability to play and improvise. This song is simply a shake tree type of song to see who he might offend off the Sheik Yer Boti album. Don't give up on him yet, you will come to really appreciate his music and genius in time. A good next piece is the live version of Inca Roads, with George Duke, Ruth Underwood, Chester Thompson, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Dave Fowler doing their thing........ as a drummer, you'll appreciate the pocket groove during the solo and the technical playing othertimes
BINGO...ZAPPA WAS A TRUE GOD
A shit boring ugly clown and his music too
Hes been gone for 20 years and people still talk about him in the present .That speaks of his greatness.
He's very smart. You should see him slamming Congress when they were trying to censor music, to their faces, by invitation. He's so sarcastic you can miss the real snark in his commentary. There's this connection between stand-up comedy, slam poetry, and rap music. Punk pushed into that zone some. Zappa was an early pioneer in finding that connection and super creative. Joe's Garage, is a hoot of an album, heavy commentary on the music industry and society, in a weird-ass yet cliché story. But he was also a musical scholar and jam session musician. And a weirdo and a freak. There's a wavelength there, and a vibe, but they usually clash. It's just Zappa, man.
Chod, I agree with other's who say this was NOT the first Zappa song ANYONE should start with. It's the equivalent of starting a book in the middle of the story and making a judgment of the quality of the story without knowing how the characters got there or how it will finish. Chod, I suggest you listen to "The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution" from the album "Sleep Dirt", it's all instrumental with Terry Bozzio on drums and Frank with an absolute killer guitar solo for about 6 minutes to end the piece. People perceive Zappa completely wrong, including myself until I heard this song because of his often silly and dry lyrics, they often overshadow the genius in the compositions. Zappa was the Mozart of contemporary music. He composed most of his music like classical composers do and that's also hard to wrap anyone's head around on 1 listen. So Chod Please listen to this song and then tell us what you think..
I can listen to it a thousand times …
He's a crazy guitarist instrumentals are crazy
When you heard that 1st Yes tune and almost wrote them off..., same thing here man.. dig a bit, find what you like. You won't regret it forever !
Zappa was the greatest. But Child thinks YES is better than Led ZEPPELIN. I'm shocked by his opinion. YES ...was okay. A three hit wonder. I like Deep Purple and Journey...but NO BAND EVER had what ZEPPELIN had. Four of the very very very best musicians all in sync with each other. If God ever touched a performer ...in Rock n Roll he touched Zappa Beck ZEPPELIN. But in ZAPPAS case ..God kissed I'm on the lips. My favorite Guitarists...composers ..creators...songwriters....Zappa....Jimmy Page ...Jeff Beck. No one could touch anyone of them. No one else had their skills.
He was a shit ugly boring clown and his music too 🤣
Shit ugly zappa changed the World of boring assholes 🤣
Try "Muffin Man " live 1977. Shows his talent on the guitar.
Frank Zappa is a grossly misunderstood musical genius.
Absolutely Brilliant, years later makes sense.
Zappa has an album called "Does Humor Belong in Music?". I guess your answer is no. 🤤
He also did some jazzy stuff. Steve Vai played with Zappa in the early '80s.
Requesting this song is the definition of blindsiding someone.
Oh man, you have no idea what Frank is capable of! Look deeper..what else? ..just about everything!!
Musical genius...and so much more
This is the first time I've heard this song. I don't know much of his work, but I am always curious about it. I am told he is a genius when it comes to music. I remember watching re-runs if the Monkees seeing him and Mike Nesmith imitating each other. I also remember his song from the 80's "Valley Girl" that had his daughter Moon Unit Zappa.
Frank Zappa was THE popular musical genius of our time
Genius of shit ugly boring clowns
Not sure why anyone recommended this song. Zappa is a musical genius and a guitar wizard
It's the same tracks over and over again with Zappa reactions.. some good, some not so. I think people put this forward for the 'reaction'. This guy can see through it and might enjoy other stuff a bit more.
Zappa was garbage
Zappa - Punky's Whips
Terry Bozio an insane drummer is also the singer
118 albums and a basement vault full of unreleased songs. GL trying to define his music.
He launched dozens of careers when he was alive. Steve Vai is just one of them.
He spoke in congress opposing the censorship bill that they were attempting to pass.
He was appointed by Czechoslovakia as their Special Ambassador to America. But the CIA told them if they want America's aid they will change it.
Bozio is an all time great . A lot more interesting than the guys in the commercial venue. Don’t you wish you were that talented?
A good choice would be Muffin Man, that will show his humor AND his musical vision and technical ability. It's nothing like Bobby Brown.
Frank is a master of WTF Rock. Primus learned from the teachings of Frank.
The president of Czechoslovakia loved Zappa's classical compositions so much he wanted Zappa to be the ambassador to Czechoslovakia. Our president had to tell him that would be a good idea.
Not
This is most certainly not the proper introduction to Zappa, this was in his more humorous "arena rock phase" he might be the most prolific composer of the last half the 20th century.
Billy was a Mountain. Ethel was a tree growing off of his shoulder. Zappa was weird even then, but brilliant. His baroque compositions are worth a listen too.
Just a fun fact. Frank had his own record label, and discovered the Alice Cooper (band). They did two albums on his label, which led them to be taken seriously, and signed to Warner Brothers records where they recorded their breakout album Love it to death. You reacted to Ballad of Dwight Frye from that album. Their breakout song, and one of their biggest hits from it was Eighteen.
Try Frank Zappa's "Hot Rats". THE best rock / jazz fusion album EVAH!
I recommend Trouble Every Day from the first Mother’s of Invention record.. also Hot Rats .. he was an incredible guitar player.. He also released a number of Orchestra music.. the first being Lumpy Gravy back in 1967 amazing composer.
Frank could do what ever he wanted and all the musicians in his band were genius. He kind of was on the fore front of fusion.
Frank Zappa 'Valley Girl'... his daughter Moon Zappa does vocals.
If you like Gentle Giant, you're bound to like Zappa - This is a song they always play, but absolutely not representative. Musically, he was a genius, composing & writing modern classical pieces for symphony orhestras & Jazz/Rock fusion for big bands, Complex but unique stuff.
Zappa..."Montana"..." Peaches En Regalia"..."Cosmic Depris"..." City of Tiny Lights"(LIVE)...."Black Napkins"......Zappa is a Musical Genius....that just for starters....I saw him Live more than any other artist before he passed
@Mr Gone's House - How many times did you see him? What years?
@@Frunobulax74 Between 74 and 82...it's all hazy now...but for sure...The palladiun NY...3 times...Jones Beach NY once....Stony Book LI,NY 3 times, The Felt Forum NY..once...Nassau Collisium Ny 2 times...is what I remember....next would be Gabriel, and Hot Tuna
Shit ugly zappa changed the World of boring assholes 🤣
Absolute genius, never fails to surprise and make u think outside the box.
ZAPPA WAS A GENIUS, DOING THIS MUSIC TO FUND HIS SYMPHONY WRITING.
one of Zappa's albums called Thing-Fish was written as a Broadway type play. The character Thing-Fish was a spoof of a character called Kingfish from the old 1950's show called Amos and Andy. I think the singer was Ike Willis and he did a great impersonation of Kingfish.
@Piranther - Frank said Thing-Fish was a good test for fans to see if they are hard core.
He was garbage
I wonder if this is the first song by Zappa that you have heard. Zappa has different styles but my favorite is his rock/jazz fusion. Check out the song, Andy.
Zappa's a crazy/funny fellow who also happens to be a legit composer. Bobby Brown barely even scratches the type of sound he gets his band to make.
Keep It Greasey, Montana and the Yellow Snow Suite are some of my favorite selections that show more of how wild his music can get in terms of technical skill and storytelling.
Try his serious stuff...listen to all of Joe's Garage...
No because it’s 100%Porn!
@Bookhouse Boy I can’t even listen to it anymore. It’s absolute garbage lyrically.
Zappa was garbage
An ugly clown
This is the sort of stuff he'd write to finance his more extravagant musical adventures.
What I suggest you do is listen to a few interviews with frank. He literally believed that there should be any barriers of any type to any speech. Age, sex, race, doesn't matter. If you asked him if a 5 year old should hear Bobby Brown, his reply would be "It's just words".
Brawo super ❤️ REACTION
Here's a little known fact > Zappa invented RAP > I am the SLime , and Dumb all over !!!
His Roxy and Else Where album with george duke playing keyboards is a better representation of his true style
I can speak objectively because I’m not a fan, but I own 3 albums and I admire the guy. Zappa is a musical genius, there is no question about it. What I like about his is that he doesn’t take himself seriously. He is like the smart guy in class who just goofs off all the time. This song has no signs of genius in it. It’s a throwaway pop song that somehow became popular because of the vulgar lyrics. If you want to climpse his genius, check out his live performance of “Inca Roads” from the 70s. If you watch that, you will get why he is considered a genius.
This track is the genius u speak of ray
Omg I love this song in the en of the 70’s begining of the 80’s now I had to laf, never see this vid before, he was crazy, and the lyricks mg. Its weird…😅😅
If you want to hear some good Zappa guitar playing try "Cruisin' For Burgers" or "The Torture Never Stops" from the Zappa In New York album, "Willie The Pimp" from Hot Rats, "Inca Roads" from One Size Fits All, there's a really good one called "Yo Mama" from Sheik Yerbouti, very underrated even for Zappa guitar songs.
You should have listened to "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" first.
Peaches en Regalia... some of his stuff has been performed by orchestras worldwide. Try Willie the Pimp that he did with Captain Beefheart on vocals.
Try his more serious music, even his version of Whipping Post.
Comedy Frank. Time to get into the real deal. A towering musical genius. Forget about Yes, Genesis, etc., Frank is on a different level, musically. A genius composer. ‘Inca Roads’, or ‘Peaches En Regalia’ would be good entrées into what he was really about. A lot of notches UP! Thanks for your wonderful reactions.
I sent you a link in your Instagram DM of his song Montana (Whipping Post). It's one of the funniest interactions with a member of the audience I've ever heard.
Do not entre the rabbit Hole… you will never Get out again😄
Somebody suggest one of his serious musical compositions. I don't care if the lyrics are serious but Chod needs to see how this man can compose music. Maybe a little guitar too! I'm not a Zappa aficionado but I appreciate the man's brilliance, so I'm counting on others!
As offensive as Zappa can be, note how intelligent the comments are. He is a serious artist, appreciated by those who understand music (and satire)!
I suggested 'Andy' from the album One Size Fits All
Zappa was a boring ugly shit clown and his music too
Not my choice for your introduction to Frank Zappa. He is undoubtably the most complex composer/performer in my 50+years of listening to music. Many of his best pieces are instrumental but lyrically he usually tended toward the comedic or absurd and many of those songs are my favorites…Montana, Yellow Snow Suite, Muffin Man for example. Don’t give up on Zappa till you’ve heard some of his better stuff.
It's not the words it's the music
SUPER ❤️ SONG SUPER REACTION LOVE AMERICA GREAT AMAZING SONG LOVE POLAND VIVA POLONIA LOVE YOU TUBE GLORY AMERICA
Frank Zappa made it a point to push freedom of speech. And he did That was always his point.
Is this really your first Zappa song? This is probably my least favourite song of his ever. It does represent one aspect of his output, but it's a really terrible introduction to him. It is true that his lyrics are often kind of jokey or satirical, but he was deadly serious about the music, an extremely talented composer and astonishing guitarist. _Peaches En Regalia, Inca Roads, San Be'rdino,_ and the heartbreaking _Watermelon in Easter Hay_ are all good examples of different facets of his music.
If you draw a line under Frank after hearing this then you're going to miss out on some wonderful music. The word genius is bandied about on these reaction channels but in Zappa's case he really was a genius. As others have already suggested, his musical ambition is un-matched, his ability to deliver that ambition, one of the wonders of the world of music. The musicians who work with him are of the very highest calibre. Frank was a composer, multi instrumentalist, guitarist extraordinaire, satirist and social commentator. He, and his 'teenage' friend known as Captain Beefheart are responsible for some of the most fascinating, creative and yes, sometimes 'challenging' music ever to be recorded. There ain't nothing quite like it.
LOVE USA
Zappa is not an artist you can start off with by jumping into the deep end. You'll be totally confused. I would never recommend Bobby Brown to a newbie, especially without context. Just understand that Zappa is the Mozart of our time. I hope you will continue to explore Zappa's genius.
"Valley Girl" fer shure !
He has written about 50 albums. He is one of the top guitarist of all time. Check out black napkins.
I had to laugh at your facial expression at the end. You really gave it your best shot, and that's respect-worthy. Some GREAT suggestions in the comments here, but this one is truly not representative of his musical range.
Zappa never did two songs the same. He composed an orchestral piece called The Yellow Shark which when first performed received a standing ovation. This was a classical music concert. I once saw a list of people who claimed he influenced, the list was several pages long and had composers from all styles of music, from opera to punk. Despite his appearance he never did drugs except for tobacco.
I highly recommend checking out a few songs from the Apostrophe` album. Don't make the mistake of assuming Frank was a clown, he really was a compositional genius. This was just a throw off.
For a redemption track try Inca roads or the torture never stops.
Check out the Apostrophe album. 'The Great Wazoo'!!
Rather 'Cosmik Debrie' and also 'Don't eat the yellow snow suite' , great Zappa tunes and his guitar playing!
It's a work of genius. I've been astonished by some of the reactions - people just don't get it. It's a satirical masterwork: he's mercilessly mocking the aggressively stupid, narcissistic and misogynistic 'college jock' who's protesting too much, as the saying goes, thus revealing he's gay - something he can't come to terms with.
It's pretty obvious.
Actually there's a song that he does that the music is very good, check out " Don't eat yellow snow "
That song was hilarious!
Zappa started to write classical orchestrated music as a teenager already. A glimpse into his later work in that area would be Outrage at Valdez - ruclips.net/video/Ewpkx95GB_s/видео.html . As far as Booby brown goes down is concerned : it is funny on the surface, but contains some heavy criticism on US society. Check out closely the 1st 2 verses ...
Over a 100 albums! He's a genius....not a song yo start with Zappa
Zappa filled his music with his political views, social commentary and humor. He was a strong advocate of freedom of speech and pushed the envelope. He was also a genius composer. This tune isn't the one I'd have chosen to demonstrate his compositional skills. Try, " Son of Mr. Green jeans ", or ," The Black Page ".
☮️💜
This is a great and really fun song but is absolutely the wrong song to introduce Frank to you. As you have heard by now that FZ is one of the truly musical geniuses of the 20th century. He was a remarkable composer and a genius with the guitar. I would suggest that you start out with some instrumental numbers. Maybe Black Napkins or Watermelon in Easter Hay.
Genius is definitely his middle name. His arrangements and compositions and even his playing is top notch. Unfortunately the lyrics he wrote took away drom his music being maunstrwam popular. But yes, us thixk skinned kids of the 70's definitely soaked it all in.
In my opinion, his best work is instrumental works from 1969 and 1970. Songs to listen to are Peaches En Regalia, Abe Sea, Holiday in Berlin and others from the albums Hot Rats, Burnt Weany Sandwich, Uncle Meat.
You have to listen to the whole album
PLEASE don't let this song affect your opinion of Zappa! Yes, he does use odd lyrics, but he is brilliant!
You being a percussionist? I don't want you to react to this, just listen to what he could do.
This is Ruth Underwood, one of his percussionists explaining what Frank was capable of. And you'll hear some DAMN hard music to even consider playing. This is her 20 years later explaining how Frank figured out how to make a marimba and vibraphone electric so it could go on the road! ☺
Check it out.
ruclips.net/video/YSavN19ZJ4g/видео.html
Frank Zappa has also had some really great players in his band. Such as Steve Vai on guitar and Terry Bozzio who has played drums for Jeff Beck.....just to name a few. I hope you'll give him another listen. I think when one muscian does a negative song or makes a negative statement about another musician, it's never a good idea.
Lol this was not a good song to start with, he was a genius who poked holes in every trend. His catalog is deep and wide with bands that were top notch. The musicians that went thru his bands were legendary, Lowell George & Roy Estrada (Little Feat), Steve Vai (solo), drummer Aynsley Dunbar, jazz keyboardist George Duke, jazz violinist Jon Luc Ponty, Chester Thompson (drums), Terry Bozzio (drummer), and on and on.
don't forget Don (Sugarcane) Harris (violin and vocals)
@@asdfqwer1234zxcv Agreed I have three of the nine vinyl records of Sugarcane & played the hell outa them. A full listing of musicians would take up too much space in the reply. Two of my favorite though would be Ruth Underwood & Ian Underwood.
How many fools listen to shit zappa music ?
Because he was a shit boring ugly clown and his music too
Frank was also a very good guitar player. Well since your in this mode check out Arthur Brown.
This song was hugely popular in Europe when it came out, but that's besides the point. This is not a good first song to be introduced to Zappa with. I like your reaction tho. You should try another one. FZ was a genius, prolific beyond description, the best composer of the 20th century, and a genre of his own. It's worth discovering!
Funniest thing...when TOR sends me to University of Tirana, I get Albanian commercials - these Muslims seem to be bloody obsessed with sheep...
Dinah-Moe Humm
Don't Eat The Yellow Snow
Valley Girl
Dancing Fool
love the song but check out Dino-Mo Hum that's the 1st song i've ever heard by him and it's still a favorite
If you want a true sense of what Frank could do in the pop form compare this with Watermelon in Easter Hay which he wrote for son. You'd wonder whether they were the same guy.
BTW, just listen to the music on this tune. Dump the lyric. The background singers in particular. A wonderful homage to the doo wop style. To put it all in perspective, Frank is probably one of the preeminent composers of the 20th Century. This song in particular illustrates what happens when Frank gives totally free rein to his irreverent sense of humor. And no, to be sure, Frank didn't give a fuk what anyone said about him or his music.
try The Black Page, Peaches in Regalia, or Zombie Wolf
Zombie Woof.... watch the Zappa Does Zappa live version of that with Steve Vai and Dweezil. Wow!
Frank was a cynical guy and wrote about Life, wrote songs about things that happened to him or other people, really wrote songs about things that happen. The one lyric in this song "Here I am at a famous school, I'm dressing sharp and im acting cool, Got a cheerleader here wants to help with my paper, let her do all the work and maybe I'll rape her" pokes digs at over entitled Rich (and mostly white) sons of Powerful men like say senators for instance that think they can do whatever they want without consequence, shit happens all the time. If there something out there happening in the world Frank will write a song about it. And then sometimes he will just write total fun nonsense as well! I've been a fan for over 30 years and still have not heard it all. A lot, but not everything. Frank is a SELF TAUGHT musician who NEVER.....NEVER did drugs. He said he smoked weed twice early in his life and said "Fuck This, shit makes me sleepy" Frank was VERY anti drugs, which a lot of people can't believe cause his music is so nutty. Lol.
This is not the song to jump into Zappa with...Try , Hot Rats , Apostrophe , Overnight Sensation , Studio Tan , Sleep Dirt , or , The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life...there are many tracks on any of these albums that will blow you away.
Frank Zappa doesn't have a style. He made some very different styles of music.
But most of his lyrics are humorous!
You should check out "The Black Page #1"
in between
If you never heard Zappa, Bobby Brown is not a valid entry point. It's a joke song, that I enjoyed at first listen, some forty years ago or so. But I'd already known him off of other tracks. And like you said, its not something to keep going back to. Frank Zappa is a great American composer who in his lifetime was mostly erroneously packaged as a rock star. He was definitely more respected and taken more seriously in Europe. I strongly suggest you listen to more compositional tracks like Big Swifty, It Must Be A Camel, Don't You Ever Wash That Thing? and RDNZL. As you might have noticed by now, Zappa finds calling stuff Opus plus a number quite boring, so he makes up these very peculiar, silly or sometimes suggestive names. There are also an assortment of recordings where the focus is all on the guitar work, be it shredding or romanticizing. There are so many different facets of his work that it might be a disservice to try to categorize it all here. Start with these suggestions. Three of his more beloved jazz/rock albums are Apostrophe('), Roxy And Elsewhere, and One Size Fits All. Definitely explore more of Frank Zappa. Thank you for giving it a listen.
Check out the live versions of He's So Gay and Whipping Post
Try his song "Pojama People".
Try Uncle Remus or Excentrifugal Forz by him.......
