ikea is for a time & place:
i like their accent pillows (options/simple/cheap) & jute rugs for the entryway. i liked the tarendo desk as a table in my studio which i paired with "real" chairs (takashi style), it coordinated & allowed the chairs to do the talking. storage solutions hidden in the closets are no-brainers.
+ i've heard other small items are worthwhile.
the furniture pieces were great in college & my early 20s, as well as semi-temporary situations like your own. but all ikea everything is like living in a lego world: flat, square, repetitive.
The Ikea items you are using make your apartment your home. Your apartment has really come together just lovely. Thank you for a window into your space. I thoroughly enjoy your taste in style.

I agree with you about IKEA, they do have some cool things, but quality isn’t always good for many things, but some stuff is good to get there!

I had the same carrying travel box for my cat. Used it for years. I tucked it away after in the storage closet and started to find him napping in it! So he loved it, and made it easy for when I had to zip him up in it. Because he was already so comfortable in it!
Your new Ikea shelving unit looks lovely with your displays. I think it would look even better if you pulled it out away from the wall with the door/windows, slightly more centered next to the mirror. I don't think the cords going into the first cube which houses your internet boxes would not be noticeable running from the outlet to the shelves, and the unit would look more at home centered along the wall a bit more.

I agree with you about IKEA. In the past three years here in the states, their prices have almost doubled, or have more than doubled, on many of their furniture items. One Hemnes piece that I bought for $59 (it was originally $49), is now selling for $119. Ouch! It’s not like they upped the quality either.

Everything has gone up, which is likely reflected in the prices at IKEA...the cost of raw materials, labor, electricity in factories and warehouses, transportation/gas, etc. It seems to be impacting most goods and services right now.
I agree with your view of Ikea, I am in India where Ikea came really very late ad i hv bought many small/medium items from there. they are not the best in terms of quality and somethings are definitely not cheaper but somehow they are the only neutral items that go well with most things which is why i get them. Congratulations on finally feeling like settled in.
I have the same unit in my bedroom with the cubes in it for storage of clothing. Bought several years ago and holding up well. I got a kick out of you rattling Sir Gary's buns and his reaction 😂😂😂.
IKEA is not "great." You don't go to IKEA when looking for fine furniture that can last a lifetime. They fill specific needs brilliantly. I do love the lingonberry jam and the cookies.

I love Ikea. I don't usually say that about shops because I dislike shopping, BUT I actually enjoy Ikea and it's affordable.

I like the fact mix and match and versatile.I had to downsize to an Rv, the only furniture I kept for future is Ikea stuff I have in paid storage.
It's nice you can customize your own home, now that you're staying put for a while and it's all yours. I always feel better having my prized possessions displayed.
I live in Montana, USA, and the nearest IKEA is 500 miles and two states away. Needless to say, it isn't a temptation for me. 🤣 But the items are super cool in your apartment!! 🤍

I do actually have quite a bit of IKEA furniture. However living in Switzerland I feel like all the other furniture stores are either very expensive oder sh.... af. I have a lot of preowned "designer" furniture. Also like 50% of my IKEA stuff I got of facebook marketplace. If I would own my place I would invest im having built in wardrobes but since I'm renting - it's going to be IKEA for now 😂

I have the same bath mat. I threw it in the washing machine (not on a gentle cycle either) and now the edges are ripping so be sure to use a gentle wash😊
Ikea is the "builder's grade" of the furniture world. So flat. So cold. No texture. No personality.
However.. If taken care of properly, they can last. And because of their simplicity and affordability, they are easy to style and customize. Except the kitchens. As soon as those pristine flat cabinets start experiencing use, it's game over. They just arent good quality.

I think they do some things well. I have shelves that are metal and glass & they seem pretty ok. I have several rugs that have held up just fine so far. I will never buy another IKEA lamp or dresser however. Just crappy quality or bad luck?

There are a few items at IKEA made of solid wood at a reasonable price. Stuff like decor, dishes etc can also be pretty good quality. The rest is is pretty bad quality and not cheap enough to excuse it. And the whole "fast furniture" concept is pretty problematic in itself. We shouldn't constantly change up our furniture on a whim because it's a huge waste of resources and produces tons of trash. It's much better for the planet to invest in pieces that last a lifetime or buy second hand.

I want to like Ikea, I really do, but much of what they sell looks cheap, is overpriced, and painfully over done. If they truly made quality Swedish modern pieces, then I would adore it.
