Compute a total score from several variables in SPSS

If you have 2 or more variables measuring the same factor or construct (often this happens in questionnaires), then you can combine them into one measure using a mean score or total score. This will create a new variable in your dataset. This new variable is what you will use for further analysis.

How do I calculate this with a reverse coded variable? Do I include only the reverse variable in the calculation, or both this and the original variable?

Thanks a lot, i have 4 likert scae variables measuring the same construct lkert, i will like to have one new variable in order to do regression and correlation analysis, should i use the SUM (total score) or MEAN (average score) , in order to do correlation and regession with it?

If the variables have different answer stems, and need to be converted to Z scores... can you still do this method, just with Z scores?
