I don't think there is much tbh. there's more leaked content from tf2 development prior to release than behind the scenes stuff. so far as I know anyway
Even though I loved Valve's games in the past, their hardware interests far more than their games nowadays. While Alyx was a great VR game, I've only played it through twice. By comparison, I've played through Half-Life, Half-Life 2, both of 2's episodes, the Portal games, and the L4D games more than I can remember. So while it was the best VR game ever made, it just doesn't have the replayability of their other games.
i definitely agree about hl alyx. i really recommend you check out some mods for it if you havent tho, theres a lot of cool stuff being done with the engine that is definitely worth checking out. like most valve games the game engine itself is where the real replayability lies
Exactly this! I also played all valve single player games from hl1 to portal 2 many times, I’m even making maps for half-life 2 in free time that’s how much I love the game. But when HL:Alyx came out I was happy, played it once and forgot about it.
Half Life Alyx is just a glorious game but a huge hassle to get started with (like any VR game. The glasses feel more like a restriction than a liberation after some time). The steam deck is just what gaming should be: potential for easy "pick up and play" combined with full flexibility of a computer. The Switch only had the former.
HL Alyx included no multiplayer mode and no real modding tools outside of a mapping tool. So no conversion mods could be done in VR with the half life alyx engine and assets.
Only a supremely powerful esoteric nerd that looks like melting mayo could steer the ship named Valve. They only show up when they can be watershed or innovative in some way, be it a narrative driven FPS game in the time of Doom or what they’ve done in the VR space and even Steam was completely groundbreaking when it happened (they even had a shopping cart from jump). No one else is like them, and I’m not sure we’ll ever see their equivalent.
I tried playing the demo for Half-Life 2 back then and it's the reason I have a Steam account today, but couldn't run it, then I played a bit of it on PC at a friend's house. I was excited and very interested in Half-Life 2 at the time, but it wasn't until I got it as a Christmas present on Xbox that I first got to play it through its entirety. Despite it being a technically inferior version, I loved it.
1:24 its interesting because if i remember correctly, kleiner doesnt point a gun at you on the launch version of this scene, also it looks like you start the level from the area you leave the level in the launch version aswell
And for the most part, those were niche experiences of the time. They weren't widely utilized or available. Xbox live created a widely used infrastructure and developer interface. That, combined with better consumer infrastructure, really helped.
the fact that the game can run on this weakass underpowered platform given its minimum requirements at the time was unreal. most people could barely push 30-45fps on low settings on a mid-range pc when the game came out. you have no idea what youre on about lol
@ProtoMan0451 it was definitely different times. I built a new rig ground up around the time HL2 and Doom 3 came out. I was happy to max them out at 800*600 or 1024×768 running around 30fps. Probably worse at parts. It's hard to remember. This is why I'm fine with 30fps on consoles despite the current framerate snobs. Old gamers are built different.
@@jeremiahgrayest Thats why theyre still making good games, and releasing the most advanced game engines available? Oh wait.. haha. I really do hope they just drop a few new games with Source 2. (CS "2" doesnt count lol) If that happens, i will agree with you. Rn they just like collecting that 30 percent off all the crappy games being sold these days. Steam deck is awesome tho. Glad they made that. Now we just need some new valve games to go with it! ha
@@VashStarwind why cs2 doesnt count? Why make "new games" if they do nothing and still win?😂 Unlike EA/ubisoft/Activision fighting for the first place in "who are the worst videogame company"...
For me very interesting see how be look S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 on Xbox Series S. I think is same impossible thing how Quake II on PS1, Half-Life 2 on OG Xbox and Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One.
I wish they would make Source 2 a competitor to Unreal. I hate unreal. I think source 1 is better than unreal 5. At least more realistic. Aged more yes. But its way better for realism/atmosphere. You can tell when they made Source one, they wanted everything to be as realistic as possible. I wish they would do the same thing with Source 2, but with todays tech. I think it would compete with unreal if they just did that and put a few good games out with it.
@@VashStarwind It's not gonna happen, especially since Valve themselves went for a semi-realistic style for their more recent projects. I love that tech-demo turned into a game feel, most of those stuff either get cancelled or never get released even as a simple tech-demo
LMAO youre insane, people have ported tons and tons of source 1 and 2 content to both unreal 4 and 5, and it looks even better in unreal. it's not the engine that impresses you, but the art style. and that is indepedant from the engine.
@@SINfromPL Im talking about the physics, AND valves old art style. Which i just refer to as Source 1. But if thats the case, why does every single unreal game of the last 10 years, look sort of cartoony and not very photo realistic? I can only think of maybe 1 or 2 unreal games that were pretty realistic, and the dev's had to go out of their way to get that feel. You dont have to go out of your way to get that in source 1. So yes. The engine has a pretty dang big impact on the feel/look of the game.

its quite surprising how valve had foresight vision in the gaming industry.

"Micropayments" for mod content lmao, worked out great for Skyrim.

And it ran like hell. Look at the frame rate! Only The Orange Box could do it well.
Not so much The Orange Box itself, but more the superior hardware of the next console generation. 🙂
Well... except PS3.
I loved the Orange Box on the 360. I remember I preferred portal on the console
Oh my god I’ve been looking for this thank you so much for posting this is some quality gaming history !! 😊
Wow thank you for this
When hl2 20th anniversary update?
Most likely November this year
Maybe they'll port it over to Switch like they did Portal 1 & 2
Great Job!
I love Gabe, when he is gone, it will hurt.
