This is the sort of vehicle I'm now imagining being developed mid-war to keep French tanks relevant if France had managed to hold on through to the end of the war.
I can imagine, with that huge 17lbr set so far forward, the vehicle being excessively nose heavy and difficult to steer, this, coupled with such a poor power to weight ratio would seem a serious handicap for a tank destroyer with a fixed main armament.
Video game developers didn’t dig this paper TD out of a French archive, the drawings of it and the R-35 fantasy were in French books long before WOT and other similar games. In a related note, I wonder what Becker would have thought about the idea? He converted most other front line French tanks from 1940 into self propelled artillery or panzerjagers, but no S35 conversions apart from the unarmed artillery tractors and driving school vehicles. Maybe the Germans figured the S35 was more useful as a tank? They certainly would have put a Pak 40 on it they thought otherwise.
Can't see any way for the crew to operate the cannon as shown in the diagrams. How dies the *commander" aim/lay the piece? On UK 17 pdr towed & Archer SP mounts the aimer sat to the left of the breechblock. On this vehicle was the driver also the aimer/layer?? In the sketch the "commander" seems dangerously close to a recoiling breech block ... wouldn't find me standing their. The AMX13 would seem to be a far better TD ... lower, faster & 12 quick shots.
Vehicles like this really are annoying because on the one hand, you want to dismiss them outright for looking ludicrous and having obvious handling issues that would complicate their deployment at the best of times, but then you have to appreciate how ludicrous the weapons were as towed systems. 17-Pounder was obnoxiously big and heavy no matter how you mounted it, and if I had to choose between this bathtub or a towed gun, I would be really hard-pressed to say which would be less annoying to deal with! I think I will ask for reassignment to Centurion and avoid the issue altogether, thank you.
I like the video but disagree on the opinion that having ahistorical elements of a tank is a fault for Wargaming. It's a video game and values need to be modified on a case-by-case basis to ensure playability of vehicles. Wargaming could do a better job of explaining which aspects are ahistorical in-game, but all in all I gotta give them at least some credit for digging this tank concept out of the AMX archives and showing it off to the wider world in a fun and interesting format
Even though the gameplay is bad and the tank specs often quite inaccurate (in some cases they made up entire tank models on the spot) I have to admit the 3D modelers did very well at their jobs
@@ClockWork-zj7zy War Thunder isn't better at all. There are some bs balancing in that game ( A game I play) like removing stabilizer, wrong missile, wrong shells or ammo, wrong physics, high repair cost, why use battle rating, outed maps, spawn camping, no pure ground battle, CAS, Top tier Heli, Heli EC,etc.
Great, the only tank in the world that can be cracked by a 7.92x57 burst from a fighter-bomber. A hit from the air in the open ammunition compartment and .... booouuuuummmm. When I see combat vehicles like this, I know why France was defeated in 6 weeks in 1940.
Bathtub of Doom fitted with the 99mm gun. It's absolutely deadly then, especially with that huge gun traverse.
Back when I played WoT, I absolutely loved playing as this vehicle using the non-historical 105mm cannon configuration.
With this silhouette I think every enemy shot connected, good for training gunners
I love how in the thumbnail the tank has "bathtub of sadness" (baignieurie de malheur) as the tank name
All hail the french bathtubs
Very interesting video on a vehicle I did not know existed! Cheers!
You deserve an award for pronouncing that word! Great speaking voice.
4000+ lbs of ammo... im a little jealous. Good content as always.

My thoughts exactly.
someone was drinking to much wine
If a french tank had down syndrome it would look like this. In all reality though this thing looks hilarious yet intriguing
portable 17 pound baguette dispenser
I loved this tank in WoT
It's full nickname is "Bathtub of Doom"
@@GerardMenvussaa study found 1,676 Americans were reported to have drowned in a tub during a five-year period, an average of 335 a year hihihi
@@jonsouth1545 how many were "tubby" ??
With a really big B00M
It looks like SU 85 without a roof.
Easier to get out & run away

Old French chassis + Modern needs = wargamers dream

You should use wathunder video as they aren't driven by invisible ghosts like in world of tanks
it's not in WT yet
Good lord that thing is ugly. I have my doubts that the suspension would have been able to handle the gun and the weight.

You hit it on the head. They have to be honest about what is real and what is made up in a game that is heavily advertised as historical.
Looks almost as if Somoua tried to get in the French-Tank-Joke-Buisness
ah yes, the Toilet tank, can take alot of big ones if you ask me.....
Just for giggles I would put a really good crew in the S35 on WoT and lay waste to a ton of tanks.😆
Looks almost like a late WW I design.
Ah yes a hard name to say
I love how you trash War Gaming but use their graphics

@@Mr.Sam1216 very good opinion however I don’t agree with it and that’s ok.
try 90mm not 99mm gun
You said it was based on two French designs, but the hull looks suspiciously like an American Sherman.
Wait, wasn't it supposed to be 17-pounder? It says "16-pounder" in French (de 16 livres).
s35 ca i always get deafeted using that in wotb
God, what a hideous vehicle! Whoever gave the vehicle its lines wasn’t going to win any prices in designing.

Well, it is France. Their designs always in weirder and unique side.
Are you just gonna go in circles saying it has a 17 pndr ?????

No one's gonna make the joke that this is the only use to which the French put bath tubs?

France important on the world stage? Not unless they find another Napoleon, because they haven't been since 3
