- The Char de Bataille AMX-40 modèle 1940, more famously known as simply the AMX 40, is one of the numerous French tank designs which were created in the 1930s and 1940s, but never went past the drawing board, either due to not garnering enough interest, or the unfortunate interruption caused by France’s military woes in 1940. AMX’s cavalry tank project is arguably one of the most famous of those designs, largely due to its appearance and distinct look in a popular video game.

Le Quack
wow you're that early huh
i agree
Le charlatan
When I first played the game, sometimes back in 2012, the old duck was an absolute beast. It was the Matilda of its time, which armor could only be penetrated by the best of tank destroyers frontally (like Hetzer), or the best of the best turreted tanks from the rear (like T-28 with 57mm gun). Its gun was also semi decent for its time (the 75mm short gun).
However now it has been powercreeped to hell.
When you said it was the Matilda at that time was the Matilda line out yet? And since now you can't unlock the stock turret on it was the stock turret better?
@@aaronwrld6165 the stock turret has much better armor but a much weaker gun
@@lilmachingunn that's what i assumed, did the stock turret have the fat cupola that the modern turret of it
Designers musta been smoking quack
The "duck" look is cute, but the underside of that mantlet has to be a bad shot trap.
I kid you not, I'm currently painting a 1/72 scale AMX 40 in the colours of a mallard duck!
Okay I just started playing this tank in World of Tanks and I'm really confused as to what the whole duck thing is is it just because it looks like a duck or is there something deeper behind it
@@Kaminari_Kitsunokami it just looks like a rubber bath toy duck.
My new favorite tank.
Loved love LOVED my Amx in wot. Slow as a slug, but 90% of the teir tanks it faced couldn't hurt it! Lost a track so I was stuck, but after over 50 rounds bounced off the fled while they had a chance LOL. If it had a bigger gun would have called it my French tiger .
"All that survives of the World War II project are the plans." And thanks to World of Tanks, the memes.
France's military woes in 1940. Nice way to put that.
This AMX 40 of the 1940's should not be confused with the AMX 40 MBT from de 80's
I hope you guys go into the G1 series of tanks.
I once engaged in a head on fight with an opposition amx 40 in wot....we really couldnt get a shot in on each other...was only when another tank came to help me that it got resolved....ahhhh early days of the french line in wot.
long live the duck. all hail the duck
Bruh the French looked at a duck for inspiration and went ".....fuck yea this is good"
I think it's a ducky design except for the terrible shot trap to the front, and apparently only one hatch to get out. Imagine the struggle to escape in a "Bugger, the bloody tank's on fire" moment.
I want to see the Chieftain in a recreation of one of these ducks - "Oh bugger, the tank is on fire"
@@aymonfoxc1442... the Duck is on fire
I remember the russian WOT community called this thing “the tea kettle”, funny but fitting name. anyway good vid
B1 the duck
AMX-40 the super le' quack
I wonder what the designer thought when they design the god damn rear MG... Well, good for France that this duck never been born.
It was better than most French tanks in service tho
Someone comes up with a list of technical requirements. Then someone gets paid to include those requirements and tick off a box. In some countries, the work ethic would be to tell the boss that it does not make any sense. And sometimes it's just what the customer pays for.
That Robin-Van Roggen continuously variable transmission, would that have been similar to the Variomatic transmission DAF later used for its cars, for "beauties" like the DAF 30 or 66?
"If it looks stupid, but it works, it ain't stupid"
Though it doesn't work
Its a Ufo design
I remember when they were first introduced, they are basically unkillable in their tier because no tank have the gun capable of go against their armor in that tier. They are really broken at that time.
They were an op tank in WOT early on
An Italian throwing shade at the French,....guess you got to get em' in when you can.
Author is French, narrator is Romanian...
@@TanksEncyclopediaYT I spent like... fifteen minutes trying to peg the accent. I'm usually really good with that but I couldn't guess this one. :D Awesome to hear! :D
@@TanksEncyclopediaYT apologize about that, just a rash guess on my part considering all of the Italian coverage.
Whoa whoa, why are you even listing historical inaccuracies in WoT? Like they're in every single vehicle I think
Yeah, the game has more inaccuracies than accuracies, which are mostly limited to the looks, or nothing at all in some cases...
I think only the easy 8 is accurate, the rest are not
I love it. I want to build an AMX 40.
All they had to do was slightly widen and lengthen the tank so It could fit a larger more powerful engine to actually achieve its good 50 kmh top speed, slightly widen the turret so it could comfortably fit 2 or even 3 crew members, a hatch on top of the turret with machine gun (instead of in engine deck! WTF!) and fit a larger, more powerful cannon, possibly a long barreled 75mm, even just the 75mm Sa32 or 75mm APX 38 would be much better with much higher armor penetration and explosive power. And get rid of that turning/powered road wheels in exchange for stronger suspension and tracks to support the slightly higher weight and straighten out the concave frontal mid-plate. And boom, you have a decent tank for the French army, a contender for the T-34, Panzer 4, and Sherman.
So essentially just build a new and better tank.
@@REgamesplayer I think more like improving the design instead
@@hideonansel9388 The problem is that you can't just modify tank like that. If you for example increase its dimensions, its weight will increase rapidly. If you increase its width, you then need to redesign transmission as it is too short to reach drive sprocket, etc. This means that by each such modification you need to redesign all the other components to fit into the tank which makes it expensive process not just in terms of money and time, but also in industrial capacity during war as you can't just make different kind of transmission. Factories then need to retrain their workers, they need to re-tool their inventories to make this slightly longer type of transmission which then takes additional time and money, because someone else has to design new tools to make new kind of longer transmission for factories too.
Such deep modifications like original author mentioned is basically making a brand new tank. A lot of nations did that, for example T-34 to T-34M to T-43 tank development in USSR during WW2.
@@REgamesplayer Hmm all those are true, I'll l give you that
so mess up the look so it doesnt resemble a duck?
I like the machine gun on top
1:45 Army? Royal Air Force? No!
Brittania rules the WAVES!
17:09 LMAO
Best french tank only if they massed produced it le quack
Quak!
I only smoke quack.
A French tank with 2 men in the turret ......... what sorcery is this ?
Le quack is impregnable from shells not from the french
And after the war the suspension has been abandon by all and view as not as effective as expected.
The modern AMX40 is not an AMX30, the hull and turet is weeled and not cast and it is a fully new redesign tank even if it look like.
Am I the only one who doesn’t see a duck?!?!?
Heresy.
Heresy
Heresy!

I sense a kinship.
