- Lipps Inc. (a pun on the phrase "lip sync") was an American disco and funk group from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The group is best known for the chart-topping 1980 worldwide hit single "Funkytown", which hit No. 1 in 28 countries and was certified as double platinum in sales.
The group originally consisted of lead vocalist Cynthia Johnson and a changing line-up of session musicians including guitarist David Rivkin, guitarist Tom Riopelle and bassist Terry Grant. Steven Greenberg, the creator of the act, wrote and produced, most of the group's music
Funky Town, written by musician, composer, and record producer Steven Greenberg and sung by Cynthia Johnson, expresses the singer's pining for a metaphorical place that will "keep me movin', keep me groovin' with some energy". Steven wrote the song while the band was living in Minneapolis with dreams of moving to New York.
"Funkytown" entered the US Billboard Hot 100 on March 29, 1980 and spent four weeks at number one, from May 31 to June 21, 1980.
It also reached no. 1 in the Dutch Top 40, in Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Spain, Canada and no. 2 in the United Kingdom.

This is one of the white girls that lip-synched the song to promote it in Europe. Cynthia Johnson was the singer who’s powerful vocals blended with the synths so well. It’s too bad they never really had another hit even remotely close to this. I don’t think this group realized what they stumbled upon. Their follow up designer music was a dud.
"Funkytown" is one of the most forward-looking records of the disco era and musical grandmother of many a house/techno record of latter decades.
