- Written by musician, composer, and record producer Steven Greenberg and sung by Cynthia Johnson, the song expresses the singer's pining for a metaphorical place that will "keep me movin', keep me groovin' with some energy". Steven wrote the song while the band was living in Minneapolis with dreams of moving to New York.
"Funkytown" entered the US Billboard Hot 100 on March 29, 1980 and spent four weeks at number one, from May 31 to June 21, 1980. It also reached no. 1 in the Dutch Top 40, in Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Spain, Canada and no. 2 in the United Kingdom.
In this Toppop video clip the ballet is by Debbie Jenner and her troupe. Later she had her own groep Doris D and the Pins.

I was about to look this up as I was pretty sure that this blonde lady who was in a lot of different tv performances was a dancer not a singer and just didn’t look like she would be the singer.

It’s fairly obvious the dancer isn’t the singer,mainly due to how obvious it’s an african American sister’s voice. Shirley bassey, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Cynthia Johnson, Gwen McRae I could go on. On the radio growing up I knew by the bass and power of the singers voice
