"15 short months later" is... how do kids these days say it?... "a big mood". I'm pretty sure I started watching your channel after the previous portfolio video was made, so I appreciate that you showed us where you started. I'm sure there's a more correct word to use here, but the *contrast* between before and after did a great job of supporting what you were explaining.
It's so frustrating that people were ever mean to you, you're super nice and these videos always seem so selfless, make another redesign of the Donkey Kong gang just to show 'em who's boss.
I love how you did a practical and goal focused walkthrough of your actual portfolio 👍👍 Also, I can't get past the term "cyber hacking" 😂 it's exactly the sort of nonsense an angry executive type spits when they have no clue.
The funniest thing about it was his concern with results showing up in Google- as in, pages of mine featuring the name came up first in Google. Not understanding how SEO and relevance will sort things that are actually getting views first. Meaning that him and his whole 48 twitter followers weren't moving any page views 😂 But there was something seriously wrong with him. One time, a related post from a mutual of a whiskey logo design appeared in the sidebar of this pig. He went on about how it was a connection to pictures of him from Facebook at a party drinking? Like, my guy...
@@CharacterDesignForge He sounds like he needs help. X,D My god, he seriously doesn't understand how to run a business also the pig thing is nonsense, that part reminds me of some people I dealt with in the past that still makes me question them today.
Good insight for a portfolio, I’ve never put one together and I may be starting a small art business next year and this is a good way to start me thinking on presentation. Thank man!
I think my biggest issue right now is that I don't have anything to put in a portfolio... will have to keep those tips in mind when I have things worth showing to others.
0:06 I am a certified OC Character Designer. You can tell I'm professional by my totally original character Wodahs. No, he's not Shadow the Hedgehog with green hair, he's is 100% original.
It's pretty incredible to see the stark difference in art quality that 15 months makes. Watching along the way, it's easy to miss incremental growth, but the hard cut makes the new art stand out so much more!
This is a big reminder of how little I have done with my portfolio, and I will say how clean your website is helps out as well, don't want clutter getting in the way of people looking at your art
Good video brookes! I liked seeing your updates to your portfolio + your reasoning behind your choices--im probably not going to go for an art job any time soon, but some day, maybe! So this is good to keep in mind! Worst harrassment i ever got was when i criticized a popular character in a fandom i used to be in--didnt last two months though, i made sure to be quick on tge block button lol
It's funny how I gotten in mind about portfolio and getting mine started last year or so, is the reason why I watch your video. And now I been thinking on updating and change to fix it up cause the layout is off. Now I see this. X,D Love your videos man, keep them up. ♥
Oh I feel that on the “whenever there’s job openings I don’t have work to show” it drives me NUTS Despite working actively on big projects there’s just not much return yet beyond personal gains 😅
Thank you so much for the more of your Priceless advice! I just have to say, throughout the whole viewing, although I did learn a lot as I normally do from you, I felt incredibly bad for some of the things you had to go through. You are kind and generous man who deserves a lot more respect than what you've experienced. Thank you for being a gift to the world!
Super informative video, I'm making sure to keep this close at mind while I put together my portfolio. Duude, that Dribble situation sounds whack as hell. I'm glad I've never heard of that platform haha. You deserve way better than that.
This was such a fun video to watch! Your portfolio glow up was INCREDIBLE so well done with that? I was so excited to watch you go through your portfolio I was almost disappointed when you started giving advice first 😂
I started a portfolio site in my first semester, but took it down, because knowing it existed and knew I wasn't getting folks visit my site I took it down to not even have another thing to make myself doubt.
I've put this off way too long. I need to get back into drawing heavily. I'm going to update a lot of my characters in my new style. Along with ideas I have for world building and backgrounds.
*_Me, who is trying to make a good portfolio of ALL MY WORK while improving to adjust and challenge myself with others through commissions, mostly paid:_* _I don't just stop there after my main goals. I keep doing it._ *_And no, fan art means that you CAN do what others ask of you. So a little fan art would mean that you're not only in your little comfort zone... You can ask someone for their character and then show them your version._*
I like your lobster knight! XD. I'm surprised to hear about another lobster character. Not common. I made a lobster character for the AWOL hunters team recently. He ended up looking like he was wearing samurai armor due to the colors I used with the style I made him in. I had a crab sniper before and was excited to do another crustation.
I'm a recent art graduate and love doing illustrations and concept art but have a lacking portfolio (probably because of the lack of recent art). How do you deal with burnout and creative drought when you run out of inspiration or motivation to make anything? Thanks for this video, love your work!
Thank you so much for sharing your process of adjusting your portfolio and sharing the before and after. In many ways I find this really relatable. Also, I wish you luck on your journey of including storyboarding. I know how difficult and sometimes awkward it is to share storyboards through a website. I haven't been successful at formatting a storyboard without it looking too cluttered and my files tend to be too big. Perhaps you can share your experience in the future? I'm sure it will help everyone a lot.
Thanks! Most likely I’d present it as an animatic, since that’s the way board artists are more and more likely to be required to deliver their boards. Not my focus at the moment, but looking forward to tackling it!
ahh man I love drawing animatics! Sadly that’s the most I can do without decent software… I wish I could use Krita or blender. Tried installing procreate once but my tablet wouldn’t comply… do you know good animation software for iPhone? So far I’ve got FlipaClip and while I know people who use it I absolutely hate it. I’m currently using fresco and can’t handle more than 2fps without messing up all my inbetweens cause I can’t play them back before I irreversibly change them
as someone trying to set up a portfolio right now this is super helpful, thank you! I have a question abut including WIPs - there's a piece I'm working on right now with very detailed lineart and background which I'm really proud of and want to show off, but the main subject isn't rendered at all yet. I think it showcases the best of my skills regarding lineart and environments, is it ok to put this in (even if I just out it at the very end)?
I've wanted to build a profile for a while now, but it fills me with anxiety because my pieces tend to take 20+ hours of work (coloured pencils, y'see). I should probably reacquaint myself wirh digital work XD
I’m ready to throw hands with anyone who’s mean to you 😡 Don’t know why people see art they don’t like personally and think that it was drawn to insult them or something
"As many art projects, I started making it *music stops* "
I relate that that waaaay too much
First of all: love that little piggy. Forge boar. Borge.
B of all: I'm actively trying to make a portfolio and this is so wildly helpful thank you
Borge!!
Borge!!

Oh my but this new portfolio is ever so lush and drinkable!!
I’m currently at my aunts house but I’m gonna watch this as soon as I get back cuz I need this lol. Thank you :)
much appreciated!
Daamn, dude. You've improved so much in the past year, your portfolio is looking top notch!

Hope that it helps!

My eyes actually widened when I read “15 months later”
There were little to no tips on this but then you and your mind-reading ability made it thank you
Half the time im just making the video I wish I’d seen a few years ago 😄
@@CharacterDesignForge well we more inexperienced artists really appreciate that
I think my biggest issue right now is that I don't have anything to put in a portfolio... will have to keep those tips in mind when I have things worth showing to others.
I view my portfolio as constantly evolving and changing. Even if I do get a studio job in animation I’m never gonna stop working on my portfolio.

This was great Brookes! I always love seeing your art progress and this makes me wanna update mine 👀
the "like many art project, i started making it--" bit needs to be isolated for meme purposes 😂
Great video, as always! I look forward to the day when I'll be able to actually make a portfolio.
This was great and so down to earth, and easy to grasp. Thank you for this!!

The opposite of the person who tunes out immediately after advice lol
I love the one with people and imaginary creatures! Those are so cool.
I started a portfolio site in my first semester, but took it down, because knowing it existed and knew I wasn't getting folks visit my site I took it down to not even have another thing to make myself doubt.
I'll be more limited and such but I wanna see about a portfolio myself. At least for a few things and figuring out how to form it and what to put

This is one of my favorite ad reads of all time lol
