Good idea I have smaller storage tent and I forgot to anchor it down the ground it moved from wind that night good thing it’s not far. Now it’s all seat on ground nicely.
Great video Dave! I have 3 video series of how I did my double car port on 3ft concrete footings! Our old one blew away 2 years ago! The problem with car ports is the legs spread and settle out of them and then the doors can’t zip anymore and the wind catches it and sends it flying! I dug a 3ft concrete footing then hovered the leg over the empty hole and did threaded rod Down the hole then I poured the concrete into the hole! No drills, no hammering! The threaded rod cured into the footing and I should never have an issue! This technique you did I like as well depending on what the car port is sitting on! Mine was over kill haha
Dave, I should have watched before I assembled mine. I used solid concrete blocks so we'll see if they work! I see this was 2018. How has it held up? -Ed
@@MyClutteredGarage yes I buy the one year warranty and just replace it each year and buy the new warranty. its a pain to take down and return and then put it back up but I'm getting faster at it. lol I hope to build a small shed to replace mine if lumber prices ever go back down.
Watch it Dave they don't make tarp only you have to bye whole thing if it ripes we just put an extra tarp over that to keep weather off of it . Here sun is bad summer at 120 cooks a lot of things Merry Christmas and happy New year from Arizona
I hear ya on that. honestly I doubt it will last a year. which is why I bought the insurance. it kicks in after 90 days and will replace it with in a year. at that point I will buy more insurance for another year. or by that time I may have built or bought something else. thinking about one of those metal carports or a shipping container. not sure which way I will go. depends on cost and fit. this one was so cheap I had to give it a try. the freezing rain and snow is hard on the tractor seat more than anything. which I just replaced the seat this past year. this carport was cheaper than the seat I had to buy. lol hope you have a blessed and Merry Christmas as well as a happy new year. thanks so very much for stopping by and chatting. always good to hear from you.
At least for now, Harborfreight does sell just the coverings (3-piece: front, back, cover) without the frame. I had to replace one and was glad to be able to reuse the frame.
it lasted one year and came apart. lol however I bought the warranty so they replaced it. this one is 10 x 17 hopefully this link will work. www.harborfreight.com/10-ft-x-17-ft-portable-garage-62860.html
I just bought one of those hammer drills to punch through rocks in post holes to repair a pasture fence this winter. Never thought to use it to drive rebar in the ground. That tip could be very useful in reworking my electric fence string using rebar rather than t posts. Also have a new used carport frame like yours i am going to repurpose into a chicken run. I was needing a good way to anchor it in these prairie windstorms in my rocky soil. Thanks for the tip.
awesome, you will love owning a hammer drill they sure come in handy. not something you use every day but when you need one its a real treasure to have one.
Holy Schmokes Dave, I loved this video. When you pulled out that big-a$$ hammer-drill, I was surprised to see the size of that thing. You picked it up and it was up to your knees in height (smile). That hammer-drill sure did wipe out the hammering normally needed to anchor those rebar sections (just like buttah). Yep, the wind will definitely take the shelter to another level, won't it? I had a shelter that only had a top cover and the wind did a number on it (haha). Yep, Grampie inspired me to make a video about getting my implements out of the elements. I just didn't publish it yet. I'll be off-net for a little while before I get back to posting vids but I'll have my wife's IPad to see some videos. Happy 2019, Dave and take it easy, brother. 👍
for sure that ole hammer drill is no joke. been in my tool bag for over 30 years and still running strong. cord on it needs replacing " again " haha. but its not in to bad of shape for its age. hilti makes great stuff. I was going to build an adapter to drive the anchors that came with it. decided that was to much effort for 4 anchors. this drill is heavy to but believe it or not back in the day I could raise her straight out with one arm. not going to try that these days I would land in the hospital for sure. lol ha ha. have safe travels and enjoy your time off from making videos. we will all be here waiting for the next episode when you return.
Hi Dave! That’s a clever quick fix for anchoring your HF carport. Glad your tractor will have a home now! Let us all know how well that HF carport holds up. BTW, I subscribed to Grampie’s Workshop a while back. Found his channel through the comments in yours. Thanks for all that you contribute to the DIY/Tractor owner community!
@@daveknowshow hey Dave how are you! I’m looking to buy a carport I would like an update on how it held up for you and if you have any more advice on what or what not to buy 😁 thanks a bunch
@@williamsfamily3192 they dont last very long from harbor freight. I get about 1 year out of them. I buy the warranty and every year I return one and get a new one under the extended warranty. its a lot of trouble but until lumber prices drop its all I can afford. I'm sure there are better options out there. I know Tim Marks over at tractor time with tim has a huge one that seems like its holding up very well. you may ask him who made his and see if they have a smaller version.
for sure I love that hammer drill. I have had that hammer drill for over 20 years. its a hilti and they just don't make a hammer drill any better. !!! Thanks for the anchor idea! I am going to make those to anchor my dog kennel down. I may weld a cap on the top, then i can pull them easily when i need to move it. Thanks Dave!
I was thinking I could use a hook on a chain and just hook on where the 90 is welded and pull it up. a cap on the top would likely not allow it to fit in my hammer drill. not sure but I may should check into that as I will be pulling theses out soon. thanks for stopping by.
@@daveknowshow thanks for your response, you're right about the hammer drill. I have the Harbor Freight hammer drill, not as big as yours, but I think the Chuck turns all the time... did you just have your chuck wide open, or does yours have a hammer only option?

Hey there Dave thanks for the nice references!!!! I think your anchors are great. I like the hook and they should hold the shelter real well. One on each corner should be plenty to keep your shelter at home!!! Another reason I put 6 X 6 under my shelter was to get a little extra height. Anyway Dave, I think it was nice of you to refer to my channel the way you did!!! I sure appreciate the shout out and I hope you have a great Christmas!!! Take 'er easy!!!

Thanks Dave, we are very thankful for the shoutout of the smaller channels. I feel they are more enjoyable to watch. Mike's channel is great. Never went to Nova Scotia, but if I ever go, I'll make sure to visit him and shake his hand! I did not knew it was possible to drive a rebar with a Hilti. I take note of that! Having the tractor out of the weather is great. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Dave Merry Christmas to you and your's! Good idea to use the hammer drill to sink the anchors. If that blows away it's time to move. LOL Stay safe and warm. Later
I know that's right! it seems like I put the darn thing right where most of the wind blows through and around the house. of all the places I had to pick the worse spot right off the bat! lol hope you and yours has a most wonderful and blessed Christmas!
That is a great idea Dave, on job sites over the years I have seen electricians drive ground rods like that, they either made up a fitting or bought one that fit the drill and went over the end by a few inches to capture the rod, makes quick work of a ground rod sure beats a hammer! Merry Christmas!
yes sir this was my hammer drill for just that task. over the course of my electrical career I cant imagine all the 8ft ground rods I drove with this hammer drill. it sure did save my arms. before the hammer drill I drove them by hand with a bottle of water. I use to drive a 8 ft rod by hand pretty fast back in the day. that was a lot of years ago. back then I could rip a telephone book in half and you know how thick they use to be. won a many of a bet doing that one. would not try that these days. of course these phone books today are pretty thin.
Good idea I have smaller storage tent and I forgot to anchor it down the ground it moved from wind that night good thing it’s not far. Now it’s all seat on ground nicely.

I replace it about once a year on average sometimes it last a little over a year. You can buy just the outer tent with no poles so that is what I do.
