While it's possible Sindel is one of her brainwashed personas, I couldn't find any intros that refute the claim that she was always evil, and no one talks about wanting to save her, so that doesn't seem to be the case.
NetherRealm needed to fill that trash can of characters with wasted potential a little more.
They ruined Shang. So I expect them to ruin all the characters

The easiest cop out imaginable to not have any legitimate excuse or explanation for these storyline changes. Despite loving the 2011 reboot to death, I had a feeling that was the route they were gonna indulge in for quite sometime.
Nope. They took the dumbest route imaginable and said "everything you thought you knew is a lie", which essentially equates to "fuck canon and the people who care about it, it's our franchise and we can do whatever the hell we want with it".

What they've done to Sindel would be like retconning that Scorpion was an abusive father and husband who secretly murdered his family as a means of justifying war with the Lin Kui.
It betrays Tha character and cheapens them.

Illuminoss Entertainment she is still mind wiped and a revenant in this timeline tho. This type of behavior is expected from her evil side. Kitana and Jade were not able to save her from what quan chi and shao Kahn did to her mind when they resurrected her. In this timeline they failed and they died becoming revenants as well. You must remember every character that died in MK9 was pretty much made into a revenant and that made them also have an evil mindset.

I grew up with the sindel in the old timeline! She was a truly a queen and a mother! She sought redemption after her suicide and leaving kitana with Khan for millennia! Sindel was truly mishandled!

I thought it'd be unanimously agreed upon that retconning literally ANYTHING is a bad thing. Not only that, but selling a staple character like Sindel, that was never DLC, is just wrong no matter how hard you want to sweep it under the rug.
Even if you're an overly generous fanboy that loves deepthroating corporate, the poorly written story and NOW the Sindel issue should make you reevaluate your loyalty to NRS.
Never thought about it but they definitely need a lore master because obviously Mr Boon ain't it.

Why would a writer want to completely retcon a beloved character like this?? It's a Lose lose situation!
The same person who got Shokan and Shao Kahn confused and answered the question "So why does Shao Kahn have spikes on his arm?" with "He's half dragon and all awesome!"
It's likely he's trying to find a new use for the character. Sindel has always been a bit problematic storywise after MK3 due to her simply being too powerful to keep in play, she reduces the struggle the heroes face due to her power, skill and wisdom. As a villain she's a dangerous threat, as a hero she's someone who needs to be constantly written out of the story to stop her from solving everything.
It's a shame since she's a great character but I do see why he would want to try this.
@@timemonkey Not quite. She's strong but she's no more powerful than Kitana. I think folks forget that her massacre of the heroes in MK9 was due to the fact Shao Kahn broke down Shang Tsung to empower her. The main "power" she has is being Queen of Edenia, which is more of a political power than anything.

Not only does she posses several abilities that make her formidable but she's the only one in the entire franchise who possessed the magical power and skill to free her realm from outworld by simply undoing Shao Khan's spells, a process that others describe as being very difficult and time consuming, some unsure if they could even manage it. It's why giving her Shang Tsung's soul was so devastating, she was already a very powerful character on her own.
But as I mentioned above they've been trying to downplay her abilities because they cause too many problems from a writing standpoint.
@@timemonkey Well one of the main things is that in MK4 and 5, she didn't show up because she basically refused to leave Edenia. Only during the events of Deception did she leave and brought Jade as her personal bodyguard. Her main tool at that point was her wit since she could understand the runes in Onaga's crypt and, at least in her ending, used the spell intending to return Onaga's spirit to his original body to pull him out of Reptile and into his body, of which she thrust her spear into where his heart was trying to regenerate, resulting in him dying, though that was just in her ending and she did not end up performing said ritual.

SERIOUSLY, let's make sense of this:
1) Long-held Sindel backstory is that Sindel ruled Edenia peacefully until Shao Khan's invasion (Sindel is good). Sindel sacrifices her life to cast a protective spell / ward protecting Earthrealm from Shao Khan (Sindel is very good). Sindel is resurrected in a corrupted state by Shao Khan (through Quan Chi) on Earthrealm to allow the Outworld invasion on Earthrealm (Sindel is bad). After Shao Khan's defeat, Sindel breaks free from this corruption to be reunited with her daughter Kitana (Sindel is once again good). Sindel fights and dies in the final battle of Armageddon on the side of good. (Sindel has always been good)

2) MK Reboot (Now let us remember Sindel's suicide mentioned in MK9 by Quan Chi, which he explains as Sindel sacrificing her life to protect Earthrealm...AND...Raiden's words to Kitana in Chapter 9 in MK9: "You (Kitana) are much more like Sindel than Shao Khan.")
...Continuing with this Rebooted Timeline with Sindel's leaked in-game dialoguesin MK11...So NOW, Sindel ("presumably") ruled Edenia aggresively and betrayed her husband and realm upon Shao Khan's invasion (Sindel is bad). Sindel still sacrifices her life to cast a protective spell / ward protecting Earthrealm from Shao Khan (Sindel dies being good...confusingly, WTF??)...BUT WAIT!!...Quan Chi has "NOW" seemingly murdered Sindel (so "NOW" her death is murder not suicide...???WTF???). Sindel is ressurected in a corrupted state by Shao Kahn (through Quan Chi) to remove her protective spell and allow the Outworld invasion on Earthrealm (Sindel is bad). Sindel is, then, killed by Nightwolf - therefore not having the opportunity to break free from her corruption (Sindel dies remaining bad). Sindel is then ressurected again as a revenant (Sindel is still bad). So "NOW" enters a really confused (and bad) Sindel in MK11...
Seriously, why is NRS destroying Sindel's character? What an absolute mess...

So, NRS didn't fix it. Wow, such contempt they have for their character. I guess they really don't want to bring her back in future games. Why not also retcon Scorpion to rape and kill his wife, murder his family in order to justify warring against the Lin Kuei clan? Ed Boon would never do such a retcon that to his favourite. But he did to Sindel, which shows what he thinks of her. Ed Boon, you are disgusting.

Do a wasted potential video on Kabal and how he had a character arch in mk9 where he became good just to become a revenant or black dragon member. Or on the numerous plotholes of the story such as the lack of other revenants, absense of present Erron Black, what happened to the rest of the elder gods, and etc
Elder gods were dead by Raiden's second time going to them in MK11. How? We don't know. All we know is that Cetrion did it.
Present Erron Black was seen in the arrival of the Outworld rebellion in the Coliseum, but no scene of how he came there, why he agree to it, or how come Kitana convinced him of joining her.
Kabal, waisted. It seemed to be that he was taken at a time where he still was working in the Black Dragon and not at the invasion of Outworld. But even by reboot continuity he wouldn't have those speed powers if it wasn't for Shang Tsung. Aaah did the writers forgot about this? And why not meet him with his revenant counterpart. Do something with him, otherwise he is taking space for someone better.

@@rauls.g.2518 not once did we see him with Kronika. Sure you can assume that, but nothing emplies or states that he met her. We only Kano and Erron Black inside Kronika's fortress and that's with Geras and Sektor in the scene. He is more Kano's lackey than anything. Hell even Frost who we only see her in two chapters was at least stated to be with Kronika, as we saw with her cybernetic body and sailing ship yet Kabal is never to be found, except maybe his revenant side but that's more implied than anything. Speaking of which, isn't weird that in the climax, Revenant Kabal is nowhere to be seen?

Honestly, Sindel is my favourite character. I'm excited to see her full stop. But I don't understand how they could fuck her up so tremendously. One of the most interesting things about her in the og timeline was her trying to redeem herself and her relationship to her estranged daughter. I love the idea that kitana and jade are closer than kitana to her own mother. I love the idea of sindel trying so hard to be there for her daughter despite not knowing the woman shes become. I love the potential of sindel as much as I love her moves and looks. I was so looking forward to how her dialogue with kitana would feel warm yet forced. Or grateful with jade for being there instead of her. And i was so looking forward to her snarky comments to Shao Kahn. I'm dissapointed with her story and in my head I'm reasoning it as shes still mind controlled. Thats why she was with shao kahn in mk3 because she was made to believe all this nonsense. But it does really fuck me off that no one will get to know the real Sindel. New comers hate her because she killed so many fan favourites. At least we remember.

I knew you were going to talk about this. The bio leak really pissed me off. But not as much as the current MK story.
I don't think I would even be as mad if it all wasn't so pointless. Seriously the themes write themselves. Destiny vs free will, the Elder Gods want destiny to go one way but the realms are so stubbornly violent that they're impossible to control and the Elder Gods are too caught up in their rules to adapt and yet things continue to go down certain paths. The corrupting nature of power, all of the most powerful characters in the canon end up becoming corrupt, violent assholes with Onaga, Shao Khan, and even Raiden himself being perfect examples. The only outlier being Liu Kang but even he ends up becoming either a zombie or a revenant so I guess not. The characters are good enough and distinct enough for the series to have something to say. But no all of it is pointless every time the writers put themselves in a corner they're going to reset all of time and do it all over again. All the struggle and death means nothing because the true Elder God Ed Boon will press the reset button before any of it comes to a fucking point.

Jade: Turned from a loyal body guard and friend to Kitana to a Kotal fangirl who gets a few interactions dedicated to explaining her love for him.
Kitana: Apparently could have always killed Shao-Kahn if she wanted so that scene of her being taken away after finding out Shao-Kahn isn't her dad just makes her look like an idiot.
Skarlet: For her debut characterization she seems REALLY into Shao-Kahn which would make sense if she was literally his creation but now she is just a street urchin he taught blood magic to so now she is an actual person who likes blood and Kahn dick.
Sindel: Went from a victim of Kahn turned hero to a constant slave and now is a gold digger who will betray her husband just to continue her life of comfort and luxury.
Cetrion: Mothers girl who despite being the Elder God of Light, blindly follows her mother without question.
Frost: Has become even more unlikable and even more evil.
Jax: Completely forgets about his wife and daughter and uses his time powers to free only African slaves because he didn't want to wait for people to 'get woke'.
Kung-Jin: Their first ever homosexual character who would make perfect sense in this story since he gets to meet the younger and still alive Kung-Lao, instead he is ignored in the story and is only mentioned to show that Kung-Lao likes him.
NRS: Apparently fucked over a lot of their contractors while making this game, promising them future positions and never delivering them.

Daniel Clark she was pure evil in the past two games because she was a revenant and she was mindwiped or whatever by quan chi when she was resurrected. Kitana and Jade couldn’t save her in MK9 and she died with an evil mindset. In MK11 she is most likely going to still be the evil revenant from the past 2 games.

I think the issue is when they introduced the timeline dynamic they think they can do anything with these characters (like this Sindel is a newly resurrected queen who didn’t get possessed in MK3 or the freed queen that helped the forces of light take down Onaga and fight the forces of darkness - against the man she supposedly betrayed her people for - in Armageddon) .. like wtf NRS just stop !!

This is how I feel for characters like Ermac and Kabal who both got screwed over in this timeline over pure nonsense in a convoluted mess of story that doesn’t respect the source material that already has established lore from past games before MK9.
When the Dlc comes out unless its all been a ploy it will be my truth that im playing a brain washed Sindel and will argue and cry like a teenage girl at anyone who disputes me, the absolute disrespect and character assassination in this breaks my heart. They had a chance to have a more mature, matronly, kick-ass woman whos also a powerful compassionate ruler, warrior and mother. Then they did this?!? how!? why?! its so rare in games like this to have a character who is an older woman especially one with some depth and lore. Wagner wtf would you want Kollector and Geras in the game? Get rid of Jacqui, Sonya as well because one Sonya is fucking dead and should stay dead. Jacqui and Kollector are some of the blandest characters in MK and Geras is one-game opponent. Honestly, Takeda and Jin have more characterisation than most of the new OCs introduced combined.
No reptile, no Ermac, No Smoke, No Cyrax and Sektor, no true to form Sindel and replacing everyone with guest characters instead of genuine good characters. MK11 doesn’t even have a single fucking Shokan. D’vorah can get fucked too.

Wow the contradictions of Sindel's character are nauseating. Literally the story they wrote for her in this game goes against SO MANY THINGS even dialogue in MK11! Shao Khan tells Kitana that he kept her alive because of Sindel but now apparently Sindel hates her?
It feels like NRS forgot that Sindel was actually good but was revived under mind-control. She's only ever been evil because she was brainwashed, not because she's an evil bitch! I really wanted to see her fully restored and good as she could if had some interesting intros with the characters she 'killed'.

Sindel had always been portrayed as naturally having the banshee qualities but as of M11K, she now has a Banshee spirit that imposes over her, which she can pull from herself or swallow as needed, and which actually does the screaming. Just say she's possessed by the banshee spirit! Could even do the jealous dead lover of Shao with her too.

I was hoping to see good Sindel save from being a revenant she could have been freed from Quan Chi and Shinnok control and have her remember her past and being informed by Raiden, Johnny Cage and Sonya she killed half the heroes by being brainwash by Shao Kahn which triggers her since she can't do anything since he's dead and she's been revenant and find out her daughter a revenant and she tries to save her and succeed.
I really wanted to see Sindel becoming good like she suppose to be and be a badass queen since she's said to be the strongest female character in lore (I think Cetrion beat her to that now) but we won't never see good Sindel again cause this timeline we just know of her brainwashed and evil and now she's definitely not brainwashed they just made her a evil queen like out of every character why Sindel she has one of most saddest stories.

All these retcons are just frustrating at this point. People can say what they want about the 3D era games. Yes, they made it all up as they went along, like they do now, but at least the story did flesh out the characters in a way where it tried to respect its own past and lore.

I really don't understand how people can sit here and defend this retcon and say it's good. Even though I was introduced to the series through MK9 after hearing some of the back stories from the old timeline I really don't understand why NRS changed stuff when they already had amazing character bios.
I chop it up to being a reboot and that they can change characters motivations and personality because of it. But I can see how jarring it is. I know it's jarring to see Kabal being a bad guy again since I liked him in MK9.
Play MK deception, the characters have no personality but that game is amazing.

We could easily have Sindel fighting against the brainwashing. Wanting to apologize to Kitana but unable to do so, and Kitana using the fight to break her out of it. That would be some interesting dialogue.
The way I see it, is that the MK writers (or writers in general, in this day and age) don't care about consistency in the lore and creating interesting and complex story arcs that intrigue and captivate players/audience, but instead are trying to capitalize on trends, memes and followings made popular by the zeitgeist of contemporary internet and media culture. In Sindel's case, I can't shake off the impression of how GoT's popularity in the recent years may have been a factor and how MK11 Sindel is probably a Cersei Lannister copycat. I can't help but feel there may be too many similarities between the two characters that essentially converge to the same archetype/character trope that has existed for years in numerous other media, but again resurfaced and made popular by the GoT series.
I'm glad she's back, but what's up with Sindel's backstory?! She was never a vile, power-hungry, backstabbing THOT. She was one of the good guys & loved Jerrod and Edenia.
She only became corrupted due to Shao Kahn's and Quan Chi's machinations (and likely Raiden's interference with the original timeline...). Did they confuse her with the treacherous Edenian, Tanya? 😭😭😭
And she's only "trashy" because she was brainwashed by Kahn. Her original form was a very modest, elogant Queen. That's also the reason the Edenian women were dressed that way; Shao Kahn made them dress like that.

Changes sure, but the characters we're dealing with are the MK9 timeline versions of the characters being brought forward in the same timeline to MK11. So by that standard, she is still a heroic character that had her soul stolen and used for evil, not an evil thot. But the writing team seems to equate the fact that she was the wife of Shao Khan (Trump stand-in), then she must also be totally evil without considering the implications and retcons associated with that portrayal of her.

Raiden sending a vision back to himself means the only things that should change are events after his message, like Cyber Sub Zero instead of Cyber Smoke, if the old timeline is irrelevant and we are meant to take MK9 as a full on reboot, why even have the intro in the aftermath of the battle of Armageddon, why tie it to the older games if we are meant to have no pre conceived notions? They are just as relevant to the conversation.
As a 5 year old who fell in love with Sindel since MK3 on Sega, and then began to love her more and more as the time passed, this is an absolute slap to the face! Unfortunately, they will not re-write intros nor her bio! Its very sad, but hopefully they will learn from this!
There are a lot of companies out there who hate their characters like Lucasfilm, DC and Marvel, but damn I’ve never seen a games company who loathes their own characters as much as NRS.
