My dad bought one of these new in the 80s it still runs like a top. Never even had the carb worked on and it idles like new. Stihl fucked up when they stopped making these
@@GRD1 but they are not as good as the 0**. I have my dad 028 Super and runs like a champ. The MS models use the cheap Chinese Zama carbs, so they have to replace around 5 years or so.

I just got myself an 038 Magnum, my first Stihl, second chainsaw I’ve ever owned. I’m thinking of getting an 8 tooth sprocket, currently running a 20 inch bar, I might try a 24 inch bar.
Super Stihl 038 Magnum is a quality chainsaw I have a 24 inch bar on mine and a tungsten chain today. Purchased in 1995 and cutting still with it in 2019 Australian red gum and pine trees. I am on the land. A quality Stihl chain saw. I call it the big bastard. With care it keeps on going thanks to Stlihl quality and service with parts. Stihl Magnum 038 is a tough piece of mechanics big on cutting only hard when to start on pulling to start... jarring on my old hands. Love Stihl. Keep on cutting...yea! Stihl is quality. Hi, I purchased this saw about 12 years ago from a farmer and showed little usage. I have only used it once about 6 years ago. Was cutting up some fire wood and the thing lost all its power - bogged out and began to smoke quite a bit. I fired it up last year, first time since the mentioned incidence, and it sounded ok however I notices when I put it down it was leaking fuel. I do what you suggested and see how it goes. Thanks for the reply SK. Alan in Alberta
Late reply but it likely has a gummed up carb from sitting for so long. Also, the fuel lines can deteriorate and start leaking. Mine actually started leaking from the seam in the handle. I cleaned it up really well, used some acetone to remove contaminates and JB welded the seam. No leaks since.
Why pull the rope when you stop it? That's a German spec saw, not a McCulloch, it shouldn't go into reverse on shutdown! Or am I missing something? Interesting video though.
To powerful and to many new people that never used chainsaw wouldn't be able to handle. I have hard time running my dad's old 028 Super which was made around the same time and its only a 51cc
I have a Stihl 038AV super pro model which I purchase years ago - I haven't used it at all, it looks to have little usage form the previous owner, however there is a crack in the fuel tank; can I use epoxy on it? What should compression be, if it is good shape. Thanks, Alan in Alberta
Ricky Garrett I was told by my saw shop that because the pawls are on the recoil assembly and not the flywheel, this is pointless. For instance, a McCulloch has pawls on the flywheel that are driven by the recoil pulley. The manual states pulling the cord when turning off the saw will prevent damage. As far as I know, it doesn’t apply to Stihl.
hey nice saw i got a 029 and its been a bitch to start ever since i owned been to shop carb rebuilt not any better had saw13yrs some one told me they had carb trouble in certain yrs any ideas?

Why did you pull on the starter rope when turning off the saw? I'v seen Buckin' Billy do the same with old McCulloch saws.

Very late reply, must likely you got an air leak between your carb and cylinder.
yes epoxy works well on these older saws. I would then use tank sealer inside for air tight seal.
Take care,
SK

How much the cost of that chainsaw 038
What is the biggest bar I can run on a 038 still saw?
I've seen these with up to a 48 inch. But you'll burn it up doing that I feel like. I know once you go that big they don't seem to last
Why are you pulling the cord when you are turning the engine off? There is no need to do that...
adynegrean as a matter of fact there is. it prevents the recoil mechanism from catching and damaging the recoil cogs
Ricky Garrett I was told by my saw shop that because the pawls are on the recoil assembly and not the flywheel, this is pointless.

To be fair. Needs it or not it hurts nothing and is good practice for when you’re holding a saw that does benefit from it down the road.
I asked the compression question in advance of watching the vid - sorry about, still would like to know you thoughts on the leaky tank.
Thanks,
Alan
How do I slow down the flow of chainsaw oil to the blade?
It almost runs out under the saw when I'm cutting!
There’s a slotted screw underneath the saw to adjust oil flow
can you put up a video showing how to replace the fuel tank on this model
No. Get lost.
