After Cal had been at Kentucky two or three years some fans questioned why he was only recruiting one-and-dones to the detriment of continuity - No one good came back for a sophomore season. He responded by saying (paraphrasing), "What am I supposed to do, not recruit the best players I can get?" That quote has stuck with me, because it illustrates what's wrong with his coaching philosophy. He doesn't try to recruit a "team," with complementary parts. He tries to recruit so many five-star players that he can simply overwhelm the opponent with raw talent. There's no real coaching going on, especially offensively. We had no real set plays, only floppy action or isolations. The reason his teams struggle against zone defenses is because they don't practice it. He won't run zone in games, or if he does, he'll run it for one play; the other team will score, and he'll say "See? I told you so" and you'll never see a zone again. Not saying zone defense is the answer, but it illustrates his stubbornness. In his first ten years, I'd get so pissed when other team's fans would say "Kentucky has so much talent all Cal has to do is roll the ball out there and win." But I was wrong and they were right. John Calipari is a Hall of Fame coach (legally) - but what he really is, is a Hall of Fame recruiter and a so-so coach.
The championship in 2012 came because the NBA lockout. Had a couple top freshman come back because the draft wasn't offering good money. The one time he kept some guys around, they won it all.
Coach Cal was "Pitino Lite". I don't recall who called him that but they hit the nail on the head. He's followed Pitino's career from the Northeast schools, to the southeast schools. He would have went to Louisville if they hadn't already got a better coach. so weird. Pitino should write a book, "ME AND MY SHADOW" .
By yr 3!! It's yr 1 with a lot of injuries with just 9 guys!! We got D Acuff and M Thomas coming in that are Game Changers!! Plus a Hometown 1player in the state Sealy!!! Yr 2 gonna be special!!
@MrMashman93 It will be the same old song with Cal. He will push guys off to the G League and have 9 or 10 guys again. Does it every year. It isn't about winning. It's about being an agent and getting his guys big NBA contracts. Huge conflict of interest for any university that wants to win.
I just can’t help but thinking Arkansas will be winning and winning big next season. They got some serious (dawgs) coming.! Acuff, Thomas, and for sure 2 more NBA draft picks. They gonna be good!
The two biggest failures I see with Cal this season was the idea of only recruiting 9 scholarship players and injuries(both correlate). Beyond Arkansas being the youngest team in the SEC this year, we are also the most snake bitten with 6 of our 9 scholarship players either having season ending injuries or bad enough injuries that they've missed a significant amount of games. I wasn't the biggest fan of hiring Cal but I was cautiously optimistic and that hasn't changed because I know the injuries have played a big role in what's happened so far. I'm willing to give him time for the simple fact we know he can do better, even if the game has passed him by, and because we honestly may never know how good this team is or could have been because of injuries.

this guy holds his mouth like the "Joker" . I just read the comments.
The year we had KAT and Devon booker coming off the bench and lost to Wisconsin in the championship game should tell you all you need to know about Cal. I love Cal to death, but he's a mediocre basketball coach. He had a full 5 man rotation of NBA players and still lost the championship game. He should've took his retirement deal we offered him at UK. BUT I guess he feels like he needs to get more guys into the NBA.
he gets 4 games into conference next season. if he can't win with acuff and Thomas. then yeah he's washed up and needs to go. those 2 are elite against anyone they play. he can't do it with them then yeah get him outa here.
How is his team being plagued with injuries last year and his response being “I should have less available players” makes any sense lol that was an incredibly stupid idea and anyone who said it was a stupid idea was correct lol they weren’t being purposely obtuse, it was just a stupid idea

facts but he can't get it done with acuff thomas he's finished. those 2 are elite and dominate against every opponent they play against.
Are you hard headed Aaron ? You know damn well John Welch was responsible for Kentuckys offense last year.
Oh full team healthy definitely would be good!!
Who is the insider?
Every coach gets a free year.
But should any coach really be burning it in their very first year?
