A lot of my videos in the beginning I shoot without talking at all and in editing I did all of the voice work so it made the videos shorter without me waiting time thinking of what to say haha. Really interesting! I have a question: I am using 5/0 blades to cut pearl (MOP) of 1.3mm thick. It is really difficult to not break a blade every 15 minutes of cutting. Do i have to wax more? Any suggestions to improve durability? Thanks in advance
You can put the metal into the vice before passing the blade through it. Much easier imo. Edit: curious why you don't use a vice or clamps to attach to the work surface?

I watched another video before I watched yours. It was just about inserting the blade. They made it so over complicated. At the end she strummed the blade like a guitar! Ha ha! Your way is much easier! I think that's a big part of my problem. I am not loading the blade with enough tension. It's so awkward for me because the screws are on the right side when holding the frame like you are in this video and making the adjustments with my right hand is awkward because it's not as strong and coordinated as my left. I feel like I cannot hold the blade tight enough too. Damn righties, you guys get everything! The can openers, the scissors, the pens at the bank that are attached to the string!! lol.

Firstly, I wish to cut 0.5mm and, 0.75mm brass sheet, and 0.5mm and 0.8mm thickness G10, can you tell me what blade sizes you would recommend? Hi, what i do for lubricant is use soap, you take a bar of soap, like Ivory or any cheap soap, put it in a container with just a bit of water in it, to keep one side of the soap a bit scummy, then you just run it along the blade from time to time, works very well. Soap also works well to lubricate screws before screwing them, which ends up a bit like glue once the soap dries up in the screw hole.

Thanks just started and your videos are very helpful . Is there an alternative to using " ILLUSTRATOR" by Adobe for making your designs on paper. Seem very expensive for the little I'd use it. Also , What type of adhesive do you use to glue your design on to the metal .THANKS
Well I made this video years ago now but you can get something called inkscape now that is basically a free version on illustrator 😁👍 As for the glue I use, it has changed. I was using a 3M spry glue but I now print all of my work on lable paper and cut it out, it's basically a sticker. You can also use super glue. I know that sounds like a bit of over kill but it works and you just burn it off when you are done. I have some newer videos showing how I do this.

You can use nickle, aluminum is hard to solder without melting. I started with copper and brass only. Even now I will test new ideas in copper or brass before moving on to silver. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
I have a slimier problem here finding supplies. I can go to LA but that is a 200 mile round trip. So for 99% of my supplies I get them online at riogrande.com or ebay.com.

Ok, that makes sense- I thought there might be a benefit to sawing when the paper template is attached! I too will use paper- my drawing skills are limited beyond basic shapes! Again, excellent tutorial- rather coincidental- just yesterday I made a hammered musical staff out of heavy gauge Argentium wire- I never thought to attempt it with sheet metal and saw- it would have been better! You opened my eyes and reduced my apprehension of the Jeweler's Saw!!! In spite of my other metalsmithing skills- I tend to find ways to avoid my saw when possible- I came out here with the intention of pushing myself to 'get over it' and your video helped! i use bee wax and chalk on my blades, never oil, its like oiling files, i think anyway, this is how i feel tho, should i use oil? or am i good with how i am doing, been doing this years tho, thanx for a nice vid.

Notorious Lee I haven't seen them in stores, but you can get blocks on many places online for pretty cheap. I bought a set of 200 blades, a saw, and a cutting block on amazon for 16 bucks.

It's a bad idea to use cooking oil as a machine lubricant, because (as you observed at the beginning), it gets sticky as it gets old and exposed to air. There are many other mineral-based oils that will not get gummy. I get "Cool Tool-II" cutting and tapping fluid in a squeeze-bottle, to put a drop right where I need it. Or you could use ordinary 3-in-1 oil, or save a few cc's of motor oil next time you work on your car. But NOT cooking oil!
my teacher is a lot slower, he started teaching us how to start a cut, having us starting them hours at a time so the saw wouldnt slit and scratch everithing then, continuing the cuts a bit longer, now he is making us cut strips, all of this in 4 weeks, we will be practicing cuttin for 3 months and he says that that depends on our quality so we should practice at home

Can you use any type of oil for the blade? Also, Is it important to use wax/ oil before sawing? I am currently attending a workshop and my teacher told me not to use wax before sawing.. I just want another opinion about it.
I wouldn't use oil like this if you can. I only did it because I didn't have anything else in hand and it did work. Use wax or cut lube on the blade. Check out this video I made that is much better all about the saw. I use cut lube before a saw and as I saw depending on how much I have to cut. Do you find a handheld drill works better than a flexshaft? I ask because I find it is slow going with the flexshaft and I go through a lot of drill bits. Aargh!
Well I kinda have the best of both worlds now with some supper sharp drill bits for the flex shaft so I done use the drill at all for drilling holes now. Haha
Hello, the bigger saw that I use is 8" and it uses 5" saw blades. If you can get a saw like this and learn how to use it, you will never want to use the smaller saw =)
can beeswack be used as a lube? also how could I tell appart which blade? I ordered a saw like your smaller one off amazon but the blades arent labeled. I was cutting 3/16 brass and the blades kept getting loose even if I really tighten the saw or even the blades would break. thanks!
Yes you can use bees wax as a blade lube. There is a way to tell what blade you have by counting the teeth in a given area but I don't know exactly how to do it without looking it up. Check out this video I made about jeweler saws, it might help you out ruclips.net/video/aR5iN9Qmw7c/видео.html
This is an old video but when adding a new blade do not adjust the height of the saw blade. Lightly push the saw against your table and then put the blade in. It will then pull the blade tight.
Recently purchased a jewelers saw and blade set blades look like several wrapped in wire. Are these bundles separate blades or the bundle as a whole the blade?

I'm trying to finish a project my father started before he passed to honor his memory. He began cutting a pattern into a handbag blade. Because it is steel what size blade would you suggest. I believe he was doing this to save as a pattern to make these out of wood.
I was using normal cooking olive oil in this video but it makes a mess over time so I don't suggest using it. You can use wax to do the same thing or cut lube like this one amzn.to/2MAzJuC this is what I use now.
Zy Ceniza did he help u with what size blade u need? 🤔 best thing to do is get a mix PAck of sized from 6/0- 8 or something like that. 6/0 being super tiny with lots of teeth and 8 being for thicker stuff.. An other reason to buy loads of blades, Ie a multi pack is bcoz u will break tonne of them haha even after years of experience 😉 hope I helped u out a little bit.. And this guy didn't demonstrate properly how to put in a blade u are mention to tension the same frame by pushing it again the bench and then clamping down the blade then release the tension and boom, u have a blade as tight as a guitar sting that u will here a high ping from when u pluck it.,

Hi, I have a question for you: I have a 1:18 diecast Chevy Caprice and I wanna cut the back pillar windows from quadrilateral to triangular, is this the tool I should use for that?
This saw might not work for that. If you just want the window cute out you would have the drill a hole in it and feed the saw blade into it and attach it to the saw again... I think this will just hit on the over side of the car.
Why would a blade not cut strait? I've seen people with this problem. Also I've heard that bending the saw itself to stress the blade is the "proper" way to set a blade on a Jewelers saw...what's your take on that
+Greyson Ciganer I have had problems with blades not cutting straight. This was when ai was using low quality blades. After looking them over you can see that the blade itself was bent. After using high quality blades this probem had gone away. The proper way to us the saw is to keep it straight and move the part around it. I have found that moving both can be very helpful for detailed work. It all really comes down to what will work for you.
The chart convertion factor it's wrong! 1" = 25,4 mm so: 0,01" = 0.254 mm (i recomend you to use mm when you work with tiny values). May i give you another advice? Zoom in a little bit when you show how to put the saw blade 😉. PS: sorry for me shitty english

Yeah the amount of tools you can use for jewelry is crazy but it you only do one type or a limited type of designs you really don't need that many tools.

Yeah. I do things wrong but they work for me 😊👍. The chart tells you what size saw blade to use on different thickness of metal. For the most part 2/0 and 3/0 on everything and the metal thickness I normally use are 0.6mm to 2mm.
That's not a very tight blade and not how u should be showing people, u are ment to push/flex the frame again you bench adding tension them clamp down the blade and when u release the tension your have a proper tight blade like a guitar string that will ring high when plucked! Yours was far too loose, yes it will cut. But it's not a good was to show people who may only be starting our ✌

Gloves? What are those? Haha I guess you can use some cut gloves or leather ones if you are reallyworried about cutting yourself but they might restrict your movement and get in the way. If your careful and take it slow you should be fine. 😁👍

Yeah can really use anything that will keep the metal and blade lubed. I use cut lube now for all of my sawing, drilling and burr work. 😁👍

Just use a white wax candle, they work better than bees wax (not the translucent paraffin ones, those are awful).

Hi great video! I’m recently Got my hands on a giant bag of old silverware that I’m going to turn into spoon rings. Do you think that a jeweler saw would be able to cut through the metal of the spoon? And if so is there a specific blade that you would recommend! Thank you so much!
I'd they are not steel you can cut them with no problems. I use a 3/0 and 2/0 for most things. 😁👍 I need to make a video about working with silverware
Hi, what i do for lubricant is use soap, you take a bar of soap, like Ivory or any cheap soap, put it in a container with just a bit of water in it, to keep one side of the soap a bit scummy, then you just run it along the blade from time to time, works very well. Soap also works well to lubricate screws before screwing them, which ends up a bit like glue once the soap dries up in the screw hole.

@@GomeowCreations I sent your jeweler's saw video to a friend, I've tried showing her how to use it but as soon as I'm not there she either forgets how, that way she'll have a reference, she seems to have a problem with sawing downward hehe.

Thanks just started and your videos are very helpful . Is there an alternative to using " ILLUSTRATOR" by Adobe for making your designs on paper. Seem very expensive for the little I'd use it. Also , What type of adhesive do you use to glue your design on to the metal .THANKS
Well I made this video years ago now but you can get something called inkscape now that is basically a free version on illustrator 😁👍
As for the glue I use, it has changed. I was using a 3M spry glue but I now print all of my work on lable paper and cut it out, it's basically a sticker. You can also use super glue. I know that sounds like a bit of over kill but it works and you just burn it off when you are done. I have some newer videos showing how I do this.

Yes but not very much of it and it's going to take some time and blades.

Oh in this video I use oil for cutting and it can mess up the paper pattern so now I'm using something called cut lube. Its like a wax, you can also use beeswax.

GomeowCreations thank you so much! I watch a lot of tutorials online for various things and I'm so mad that there's no Hobby Lobby's in NY where I live! I know I can order online but I'm more of a tactile shopper. However, in a case like this. I have no choice but to do so. Apparently jewelry making isn't big here on Long Island. There are only two bead stores within a reasonable distance from me and only one of them is worth the 20 minute drive. There's TONS of good stores in Manhattan but that's a whole big trip.
Anyway. I subscribed to your channel earlier today and plan on poking around a bit. Once I do, I'll see if there's any tutorials I'd like. I want to learn so much! It's another expensive hobby! I just purchased a book called, The Jewelry Makers Field Guide and it has some pretty cool beginner stuff in there.

You can use nickle, aluminum is hard to solder without melting.
I started with copper and brass only. Even now I will test new ideas in copper or brass before moving on to silver.

+Sheri Lynn Thank you. You can do it free hand. I did that for a long time but when you are trying to make a perfect shape, I find it a lot easier to use the printed design.
Ok, that makes sense- I thought there might be a benefit to sawing when the paper template is attached! I too will use paper- my drawing skills are limited beyond basic shapes! Sincere thanks for responding so quickly! Again, excellent tutorial- rather coincidental- just yesterday I made a hammered musical staff out of heavy gauge Argentium wire- I never thought to attempt it with sheet metal and saw- it would have been better! You opened my eyes and reduced my apprehension of the Jeweler's Saw!!! In spite of my other metalsmithing skills- I tend to find ways to avoid my saw when possible- I came out here with the intention of pushing myself to 'get over it' and your video helped! Your precision is beautiful! I subscribed!!!

I like to use the saw more the any other cutting tool, that is if I can. I feel I get cleaner cuts with little to no burrs.

i use bee wax and chalk on my blades, never oil, its like oiling files, i think anyway, this is how i feel tho, should i use oil? or am i good with how i am doing, been doing this years tho, thanx for a nice vid.

One more comment. I think it's integral to have that block you're cutting on I was cutting downwards, off the edge of a table. Where do you get that thing?
Notorious Lee I haven't seen them in stores, but you can get blocks on many places online for pretty cheap. I bought a set of 200 blades, a saw, and a cutting block on amazon for 16 bucks.

Yep you can use that or even copper
It's a bad idea to use cooking oil as a machine lubricant, because (as you observed at the beginning), it gets sticky as it gets old and exposed to air. There are many other mineral-based oils that will not get gummy. I get "Cool Tool-II" cutting and tapping fluid in a squeeze-bottle, to put a drop right where I need it. Or you could use ordinary 3-in-1 oil, or save a few cc's of motor oil next time you work on your car. But NOT cooking oil!
You are 100% right. I now only use pro cut when using my saw. I will be remaking this video in the near future.

my teacher is a lot slower, he started teaching us how to start a cut, having us starting them hours at a time so the saw wouldnt slit and scratch everithing then, continuing the cuts a bit longer, now he is making us cut strips, all of this in 4 weeks, we will be practicing cuttin for 3 months and he says that that depends on our quality so we should practice at home

Can you use any type of oil for the blade? Also, Is it important to use wax/ oil before sawing? I am currently attending a workshop and my teacher told me not to use wax before sawing.. I just want another opinion about it.
I wouldn't use oil like this if you can. I only did it because I didn't have anything else in hand and it did work. Use wax or cut lube on the blade. Check out this video I made that is much better all about the saw. I use cut lube before a saw and as I saw depending on how much I have to cut. Can you cut very thin .012 to .018 (30 to 26 gauge) stainless steel sheet this way? Perhaps with a specific blade?

Do you find a handheld drill works better than a flexshaft? I ask because I find it is slow going with the flexshaft and I go through a lot of drill bits. Aargh!
Well I kinda have the best of both worlds now with some supper sharp drill bits for the flex shaft so I done use the drill at all for drilling holes now. Haha
What glue does you use to adhere your template to the metal? I tried crazy glue but had a hard time removing it. I ended up scratching my piece up
You can use a normal glue stick but super glue does work really well to. Also to get it off you can just use a torch and burn it off.

Hello, the bigger saw that I use is 8" and it uses 5" saw blades. If you can get a saw like this and learn how to use it, you will never want to use the smaller saw =)

can beeswack be used as a lube? also how could I tell appart which blade? I ordered a saw like your smaller one off amazon but the blades arent labeled. I was cutting 3/16 brass and the blades kept getting loose even if I really tighten the saw or even the blades would break. thanks!

What is the wood base held in place with?
That is an anvil bench pin.
This is an old video but when adding a new blade do not adjust the height of the saw blade. Lightly push the saw against your table and then put the blade in. It will then pull the blade tight.
So first you drill a small hole and then saw the hole . I didn't understand that part. What line are you following once you drilled the hole?

Recently purchased a jewelers saw and blade set blades look like several wrapped in wire. Are these bundles separate blades or the bundle as a whole the blade?
You need to take that wire off, it's just to hold the bundle of blades together

I'm trying to finish a project my father started before he passed to honor his memory. He began cutting a pattern into a handbag blade. Because it is steel what size blade would you suggest. I believe he was doing this to save as a pattern to make these out of wood.

You can get something called cut lube or is you really can find anything just go and get some very cheap wax candles 😄👍

Zy Ceniza did he help u with what size blade u need? 🤔 best thing to do is get a mix PAck of sized from 6/0- 8 or something like that. 6/0 being super tiny with lots of teeth and 8 being for thicker stuff.. An other reason to buy loads of blades, Ie a multi pack is bcoz u will break tonne of them haha even after years of experience 😉 hope I helped u out a little bit.. And this guy didn't demonstrate properly how to put in a blade u are mention to tension the same frame by pushing it again the bench and then clamping down the blade then release the tension and boom, u have a blade as tight as a guitar sting that u will here a high ping from when u pluck it.,
Don't buy cheap blades just so you have blades, Invest in better blades and they will break far less than the cheaper ones. I know from experience.

This saw might not work for that. If you just want the window cute out you would have the drill a hole in it and feed the saw blade into it and attach it to the saw again... I think this will just hit on the over side of the car.

Why would a blade not cut strait? I've seen people with this problem. Also I've heard that bending the saw itself to stress the blade is the "proper" way to set a blade on a Jewelers saw...what's your take on that
+Greyson Ciganer I have had problems with blades not cutting straight. This was when ai was using low quality blades. After looking them over you can see that the blade itself was bent. After using high quality blades this probem had gone away.
The proper way to us the saw is to keep it straight and move the part around it. I have found that moving both can be very helpful for detailed work. It all really comes down to what will work for you.

The chart convertion factor it's wrong! 1" = 25,4 mm so: 0,01" = 0.254 mm (i recomend you to use mm when you work with tiny values). May i give you another advice? Zoom in a little bit when you show how to put the saw blade 😉.

+Isa Alardi you can hammer on the flat shapes to give them a 3d look, or you would have to do lost wax or foam casting to make fully 3d items.
I'm ordering one from Amazon so I can fix my Night Rider bike light see they want me to ship it back to the company is easy to make a perfect cut they put it in a metal Dome no screws you have to cut it this is how they make money I guess outsmart them I will glue it back with some Sarah clone

This is normal for the saws that I have used for jewelry work. I have a saw like this that has the setup you are talking about bit that is for wood and much thicker metals and steel.

Yeah the amount of tools you can use for jewelry is crazy but it you only do one type or a limited type of designs you really don't need that many tools.

Yeah. I do things wrong but they work for me 😊👍. The chart tells you what size saw blade to use on different thickness of metal. For the most part 2/0 and 3/0 on everything and the metal thickness I normally use are 0.6mm to 2mm.

That's not a very tight blade and not how u should be showing people, u are ment to push/flex the frame again you bench adding tension them clamp down the blade and when u release the tension your have a proper tight blade like a guitar string that will ring high when plucked! Yours was far too loose, yes it will cut. But it's not a good was to show people who may only be starting our ✌

I would take this video down but it happens to be a good video for people to find my channel seeing that it's number one in the search for how to use this saw. I guess you can use some cut gloves or leather ones if you are reallyworried about cutting yourself but they might restrict your movement and get in the way. If your careful and take it slow you should be fine. 😁👍
