Back in 1995 I souped up my 86 Toyota Truck after the mini truck scene in socal was gone. I followed the trend that was catching on with the import scene and the likes. It had a mid cam from trd, 44ph mikunis, headers but forgot the brand. e fan, trd clutch, lockrite locker, had the pully shaved and balanced with no a.c. short shfiter and flytrap. I was really learning at the time and found out my mikuni intake manifold where small and the carbs where right at the head. I didnt have a aftermarket fpr and seems like that set up was for off road driving and lost alot in the 1/4 mile. It took alot of gas and was loud from intake and exahust just to beat oem hondas at the time. I learned about heavy rims too, it had MOMO Mirages from an MKIII Supra. Anyways, when I put the stock carbs and intake back on it was alot quicker especially high end. I ended up selling the truck bone stock with just the bolt ons in 2001. It was my first ride I ever souped up.
@@psiracing the headers, I remember now after looking for headers for the 22r they were called Doug Thorley headers, I remember they were expensive too in the mid-90s. They were short headers though I don't think I needed the emissions tube but I think I blocked it off some how. I don't think they make them anymore only in long tube.
My 81’ longbed with the 22R is in the garage so i can start the rebuild. Going 40 over as well and going to add a turbo. The side draft webbers are badass and sound so good.
Love the video man nice build can't wait to see can't wait to see the dyno numbers. i built a Toyota 20R 22R hybrid 10 years ago for my buddy pulls to 7500 RPM dynoed at 160 horsepower to the rear wheels for Street truck I think that's not too bad I used lc engineering stuff for that build just subscribed can't wait to see more and my buddy still has your a old school tube chassis AE86
Beautiful build, love the header set up! I’m considering an early 90s Toyota build myself, more along the lines of a nice street strip build. A had 3 Tacoma’s mildly done up as a 20 something year old, just bolt ons and suspension mostly. Im wondering what your thoughts were, would you build up the 22re or swap in a 2 or 3rz? I’d say my aim would be just north of 300hp, with an eventual turbo set up. I’m guessing 3rz would be the way to go, but what are your thoughts on the 22re and that hp level? Thanks!
Hey Trey, man that's a tough. What I can tell you from this post is, people really love thwre 22r's. We have gotten so much feedback from this build its absolutely amazing. Now if you wanted to make easier power, the RZ engine I hate to say just has more technology in it. We have a turbo build coming to the channel soon. Will also have a Elite Haltech ecu to control it

That’s crazy, I never seen a 11 to 1 setup using pump gas. A lot of people claim that there will be pinging issues with that type of compression ratio.
Was this build done by rebuilding the existing 22r engine block? Or did you guys buy a whole new one? I am looking at buying an old beater car and dropping in a new 22re engine from LC engineering. Seems like a pretty economical thing to do considering the whole engine is only about 5k dollars. lol

Really should get that temperature up. If you're on the level and know enough to build a engine like that you should know running an engine to cool can be worse than a little bit hot. All the metals expand with heat and ea different metal even different alloys of the some metal expand at different rates. Not getting up to temp can keep pistons from fully expanding and wobble in the bore. The oil doesn't get hot enough and cannot flow as much volume the list goes on. Maybe I'm wrong I can't claim to be an expert with 4cylinder yoters but the engines I do build and have plenty of experience with don't like being ran at lower temps. I have a 83 toyota hilux with the 4 speed manual, and I'm thinking about doing a stage 2 cam and a 38/38 weber. Should I also put dual valve springs and is the 38/38 weber a good carburetor for that kind of setup
I think the stock manifold and carb are both pretty restrictive. You can pick up a lce offenhauser single plane then a 38/38 would bolt right up and make a significant difference in power. As for dual springs, unless you have a cam or are consistently taking it past 5500 rpm on the stock stuff, it should be fine on stock stuff. Ive got a 81 22r in my sand rail and im ditching my ported stock intake and oem carb for the lce offenhauser with a holley 2300 2 barrel.
I have a 1986 Toyota 4x4 that I purchased in 1986. It's been through me, my dad, my brother, back to my dad and now back to me. So i'm planning to keep it for a while! It runs, but has about 335,000 miles on the motor. Thinking about a rebuild or purchasing a long block, Not really looking to do a performance setup; when stock this truck did everything I needed it to do. I'm having trouble finding info on youtube (maybe I should try forums) so I thought I'd ask you guys. If I get ready to do something with the motor, should I look for a remanufactured long block, or just get the existing motor rebuilt (price will be a consideration, but not override quality)? I now have a Jeep JK so I'd like to get my Toyota back to a daily driver. Hell, the existing motor may go for a while longer, but I'm looking at alternatives. About to sell a boat so I will have a little cash on hand. Any comments/input would be much appreciated. PS, when in the USAF, I had it customized at Clark Air Base, Phillipines. It has a custom 3" body lift, custom nerf bars, and a custom winch bumper. Still has the original paint!!
Dude thats a rad story and to be honest if the truck is that clean, always better to keep the original engine with the original truck. Im sure we can help you with a rebuild even tho we mainly do all out performance but we can make it happen. Only thing is we are way behind, so hopefully you wouldnt be in a hurry
@@psiracing , thanks for the reply. Based on what you say, I'll look first at a rebuild of the original motor when the time comes. I had looked at a previous video that made me think it is not as good an alternative as buying a new long block. But if it can be acceptably rebuilt, I'd definitely like to stay with the original. Thanks again.
Camshaft would depend on what else you plan on doing, as far as intake setup and exhaust system. Also depending on size will determine if you will probably need a valve spring upgrade.
@@psiracing First of all I would like to say thank you for taking the time writing back I really appreciate it . Exhaust system will be upgraded as well the intake and can you tell me where to get the valve spring set up to be honest I'm new in this field but since the engine is going to be repaire it would good idea to do this upgrade as well thank you again.
Hey John, what we do is eliminate the vacuum advance and basically keep it locked out. The beauty of the distributor is as u rev the engine it has a small delay in advance. Example, we set it at 30 and as u rev it, it may advance to 34. No detonation issues and makes it so much more responsive
Or just go to a state inspection place run by Mexicans and ask for a (inspeccion en caliente)inspection on the hot .....or just explain it to them they will do the trick ......but it will cost you 50 to 70 $
I'm curious if you have ever looked at the LCE side draft throttle body EFI system. I was thinking of doing this to keep the side draft style but to use the advantage of EFI
Hey brother solid videos and builds. If you dont mind me asking what was the tool you used to measure the air to fuel ration on the weber side draft carbs?
Very nice job! just wondering if this truck is running he L transmission or is it a W or G? I see you respond to most of your comments and was wondering if the L could stand up to this kind of power given its reputation as weak in the 4wd version.
@@psiracing Thanks for your reply, after further research I found the W series did come in the 82 2wd trucks apperantly the L was the 82's 4wd transmission. Versions of the W came in NA supra's pushing up to 200 hp and only was upgraded to the R series once they surpassed 200hp The W is a very nice smooth shifting trans and I am sure Ken loves cruising this beauty.
@@canuck351 yea we had tons of good luck with the w style transmission. We actually ran one in our full drag car and went as fast as 9:01 at 151mph and it lived.
So I just bought a 83 22r Toyota pickup and I need help with the vacuum lines. How much do you think it will cost to take it somewhere so they can make sure they’re connected correctly?
Just plan on swapping them. Easier to replace them all then hunt through for a fix. Them old vaccun harnesses can be replicated cheaply, probably 100$ to have a shop do it where i live.

@@anthonygreer3724 hey man! Anytime! Goodluck!
The valves are a lil loose. Set them at 7 and 11. It'll be alot quieter
Nice Job !!! I have a 1981 pick up which will restore and my question is what kind of camshaft should I get in order to get more power ?
Camshaft would depend on what else you plan on doing, as far as intake setup and exhaust system. Also depending on size will determine if you will probably need a valve spring upgrade.
@@psiracing First of all I would like to say thank you for taking the time writing back I really appreciate it . Exhaust system will be upgraded as well the intake and can you tell me where to get the valve spring set up to be honest I'm new in this field but since the engine is going to be repaire it would good idea to do this upgrade as well thank you again.
@@libres12 no problem, once your ready we can supply you with most of what you would need to get it going correctly!
You got a nice setup. Props
Thank you man
How come you decided to go with the msd blaster also isn’t that oil filled so wouldn’t it need to be mounted vertically?
We have ran those coils for over 25 years and never had a issue with one failing by being mounted in different positions.
What part in the dizzy was welded? Can you show some tips on that?
I'll try and put together a "tips" video
Can you please tell us where did you buy those carburetorS, the cannon intake manifold, and the stainless header?
The carbs and intake we got straight from weber, the header we custom made along with the full stainless exhaust
DOPE! LOVE IT! SO QUICK QUESTION, WHAT DO U GOTTA WELD TO LOCK OUT THE DIZZY? IS THERE A VIDEO ON YOUR CHANNEL?
We don't have a video up about it but are going to make one. We've gotten alot of inquires about it
@@psiracing U ROCK THANKS!!
Hey what exactly did you have to do to upgrade the alternator? I’m trying to do this to a 1982 Toyota Sunrader 22r
We purchased a alternator from a late model 1982 Toyota corolla with a 3tc. Alternator has the built in regulator
Wow nice work. Sick truck.
Thanks boss, appreciate it!
Great job looks awesome.
Thanks homie!
Nice work. Was wondering about initial timing setting and full advance timing @ rpm. Did you recurve the advance? Thanks
Hey John, what we do is eliminate the vacuum advance and basically keep it locked out. The beauty of the distributor is as u rev the engine it has a small delay in advance. Example, we set it at 30 and as u rev it, it may advance to 34. No detonation issues and makes it so much more responsive
I have a stock 22re was looking to delete most vacuum line, but I would still sadly have to do smog unsure on what to do any suggestions?
Smog inspections are always a tricky thing. Hard to say what you can really remove then
Or just go to a state inspection place run by Mexicans and ask for a (inspeccion en caliente)inspection on the hot .....or just explain it to them they will do the trick ......but it will cost you 50 to 70 $
@@CristianSosacastromore like 300+ if you can even find a spot a lot of people won’t risk it
I'm curious if you have ever looked at the LCE side draft throttle body EFI system. I was thinking of doing this to keep the side draft style but to use the advantage of EFI
We do Throttle bodie setups all the time. Dunno if I would do the LCE one though.
@@psiracing Which would one you recommend for the 22?
Hey brother solid videos and builds. If you dont mind me asking what was the tool you used to measure the air to fuel ration on the weber side draft carbs?
On the front of the carbs you mean to sync them? Or actual air fuel ratio of the engine??
What was the tool you used to sync them
Thank you for the Awesome detailed content, definitely subscribed 💪💪💪💪💪👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🙏🙏🙏🙏

Very nice job! just wondering if this truck is running he L transmission or is it a W or G? I see you respond to most of your comments and was wondering if the L could stand up to this kind of power given its reputation as weak in the 4wd version.
Hey man, it's using the stock W series trans if im not mistaken. Honestly the owner babies the car, he just loves to cruise it.
Well done, Exelente job!. Arts'of hearts' Jobs. I liked it, and I am appreciated guys!!..
thank you
Keep up the great work!!
Thank you!
Well done, what is the valve adjustment for that engine
Want to say with the cam we did .015 int are and exhaust
Thats a sweet build
Thank you! Definitely a cool truck
@@psiracing Customers truck or personal? I like how clean it is
So I just bought a 83 22r Toyota pickup and I need help with the vacuum lines. How much do you think it will cost to take it somewhere so they can make sure they’re connected correctly?
Just plan on swapping them. Easier to replace them all then hunt through for a fix. Them old vaccun harnesses can be replicated cheaply, probably 100$ to have a shop do it where i live.
Good call!!
Hi I have a 20/22r same set up was made now my valve are making nose after 25 miles since was biuld are the valve adjustment the same 00.8 and 0.12
Not sure if we answered this in a different post. Depends on the cam you have. Stock would be .008 and .010
Hey buddy.. I am just wanting to ask someone that might know...i have an 85 xtracab w/22r. I have a header and a weber..got rid of all the smog junk. So this engine from the factory is rt at 100hp rt? What do you think your yota is pushing? Are you familar with the 69 camaro "Big Red"?
Its a 250mph car that still has the stock body. He runs the salt flats and the mile..these trucks are not ever going to bea drag truck..but i am going for 150mph
Hey Man, I actually never heard of big red, gonna have to look that up. Did you put a 32/36 weber??
How much is this build or similar? I have a 95 4runner 22r
Hard to qoute the build because we did alot of custom work for this particular setup. You can email us and we can see what we can do for you!
any ballpark gusse as to horse power? care to share what it cost carb to oil pan. this is a beautiful engine, duels on a 22r is absolutely a beautiful thing
Thanks Troy, I would have to tally it up regarding cost! We checked alot of boxes on this build, so it was definitely up there!
