I like that Dr. Grande was able to keep his expression neutral and refrained from displaying any judgment when the client answered incorrectly. She clearly was having trouble and he appeared patient and understanding.

Dr. Grande handles this so smoothly, he never shows any indication that Sue's answers are odd. I think that takes serious practice.

Yes! His composure doesn’t change the entire time regardless of her answers.

Due to the varying levels of functionality of clients, I appreciate how the MMSE is a brief assessment instrument. It's less stressful for patients/clients than other longer assessments, but yet the clinician can still garner the necessary information from it.

This is another good video showing how to stay impartial to administering tests to clients. One thing I did think of when the client was asked what season it was and she said Christmas. Christmas is a time refereed to as a season, it's called the holiday season and some people really do consider it a season.

I liked how before beginning Dr. Grande went over how long the duration of the assessment would be and how he asked if it was alright to assess his client’s memories. I thought it was good that he advised his client that he would be asking her questions to assess this. I appreciated how Dr. Grande allowed his client the time to think of a response and he remained calm and patient with his client. He also remained nonjudgmental. I think it’s helpful that Dr. Grande portrays such a professional and neutral demeanor that also is caring to his client and reassuring.

Patience seemed like a key part of this session. Remembering to go at the pace of the client and keep yourself collected is important.

Dr. Grande was very patient with Sue who seemed very anxious during this. He did no show any disapproval for wrong answers and his affect was the same whether or not she answered correctly.

I agree that Dr. Grande did well at remaining patient and kept a calm neutral composure.

These videos are a great way to get familiarized with administering various instruments to clients with impairments.

This was a good video showing how a client with memory impairment may respond to questions in this assessment.

I was present for the recording of this video and I remember being impresses by Dr. Grande's never showing disapproval at the clients wrong answers. The client was never made to feel frustrated or less then do to her answers.

I think that is a really important factor for the counselor to never be judgmental and I think Dr. Grande definitely does a great job of showing that no matter how the client answers it's acceptable.

I agree Tammy, I was going to respond similarly. The counselor remained neutral throughout the assessment, even when the clients responded by saying the red carpet to the floor question.

This video was very interesting to learn how to work with anxious client.

I would say the client did appear a bit anxious, and the counselor did a great job remaining calm.

It is good to note from these and the other two videos that it is good to ask how the client is and if it is okay that they go ahead with the test. I would like to see a video that has a client say it isn't alright to go through with the test. I would assume that we would just stop and make a note that the client declined, but would there be clients to where this is in a way mandatory for them and they have to take the test even if they declined? That would be interesting to see how that is handled.

Great video on how to administer this assessment for someone with memory loss. I come into contact with this a lot as some of my patients have a dementia diagnosis.

The benefit of the MMSE is that the clinician does not have to have specialized training to administer the test, and can easily use this tool when cognitive impairments are suspected.

I think some of the questions are similar to the standardized mini-mental questions and it seems they are both administered the same way
