- This video demonstrates an administration of the Folstein Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) with an actor playing the role of a client. This type of exam is also referred to as a Mini-Mental Status Exam.
I liked Dr. Grande's consistency throughout the playlist. His assessments were unbiased and easy to follow. These were great learning tools.
Upon viewing all 5 videos administering the Folstein MMSE, Dr. Grande continuously performed the same with all the clients. He was nonjudgmental, neural, and didn't correct the client if he/she was wrong. Even in this video, Dr. Grande not once looked as if he was relieved when the client was answering the questions correctly. Very good video!
Dr. Grande did a great job at demonstrating how to effectively administer these assessments. His calm demeanor and way of being during the session was congruent throughout the entire session. He was not robotic and remained personable with a calm voice tone which I think is a helpful way to administer assessments.
I'd fail counting backwards 7 less, not because I'm depressed, because i suck at math lol

Dr. Grande kept consistent with all of his responses, right or wrong. It was great to see this assessment with all of the different clients on the different ability levels.
Once again, like the other examples used while assessing clients, this video was a great example! I'm glad there are videos to look at to be used as an example for those who may be put in a situation such as this.
It is helpful to see that no matter how the client responds, Dr Grande treats everyone the same in each of these videos. I can see the importance of remaining neutral and watching my facial expressions and body language.
I agree Monica! Any hint of a change in facial expressions and body language is easily picked up by clients. He does well in remaining neutral and nonjudgmental
I also noticed the fact that he remained neutral. This is definitely something to be self-aware of while administering any assessment. It was nice to see examples of this being administered to a variety of clients.
This video also provided a great demonstration of the clients we may encounter throughout our career and shows us a variety of scenarios we may experience. Of course, observing the process of administering this exam again always helpful.

I love this example of a client doing as expected on this exam. It shows what client without impairment would be lie when given this exam. I think that the hesitation she showed with some answers would be normal.
+Mandy Moore I liked how this video showed that even though the client might hesitate when answering a question it does not meant they have a cognitive impairment.
I like seeing the variety in the cognitive impairments. I think it will help us when working with clients since we saw it being demonstrated. Even though every client is different, it is helpful to see the different impairments a client might have.
This client performed as expected. I think each one of these provided insight into the variety of clients we may see on a daily basis.
+Bethany Elstrom I agree. Each of the client's varied slightly watching them chronologically. But you can easily point out the degree of impairment going back to them after this video.
After having watched all 5 videos, I've picked up on Dr. Grande's rhythm, expressions, and word choice. It's helpful to see these assessments with many clients.

This was a great role-play and I appreciated the "normal" MMSE administration. NIce job!

The client did well on the assessment. It is interesting to see different clients respond to this assessment.
+Rachel Foster I also found it interesting to see how each client responded in these videos. This demonstrates the variety of individuals and personal characteristics/perspectives and levels of functioning we will likely encounter.
I enjoyed watching this role play video. One suggestion I would make is that the counselor should look at the client when telling the client to take the paper in one hand, fold it, and so on. It may be more helpful for the client.
The video was helpful seeing a different client respond. Even though she was hesitant at times she did well.

Another good demonstration of administering the MMSE. A role play containing another instrument being administered would probably be helpful as a complimentary supplement to all of these MMSE videos.

This client did fairly well and did not really exhibit any cognitive impairment with this assessment. I appreciate the variety of client examples.
+Melissa Clendaniel Yes, agreed. The only thing that would be more helpful is their scores. Of course, we could go through and score them as we watch but it could be different between Dr. Grande being in the room and someone viewing the video.
Every client is different and these videos demonstrate that. They also demonstrate the patience and neutrality that a counselor must maintain to be effective regardless of the client's level of functionality.
Indeed, Rosa, especially since subtle clues offered by the client play into the dimensions of cognitive impairment.

This exam is different every time and I expect it will be in the field as well.
I could not agree more. No doubt every client will respond differently, at a different pace, and at varying levels of memory performance.
This video demonstrated a client being administered the Folstein Mini-Mental State Exam which resulted in her not having a cognitive impairment. I think the client did very well although there were a few hesitant moments, however, I think that is natural as certain things do take us a little longer to figure out.
I agree! I liked that the client was hesitating because, I think of all us have miners of having to think even about simple things such as, what day it is. I think this video gave a good reminder that hesitant clients don't necessarily have an impairment.
Again not really much difference from previous video. The client was a little confused with the county and city but did rather well the remainder of the exam. However, it was good demonstration of the mini mental.

the major point that i take away from this series is despite the variations of assessments, counselors need to be consistently neutral and nonjudgmental.
This client was hesitant but did well on the assessment. I would think she did not have cognitive impairment.
