    I just watched the movie yesterday, as soon as it hit theaters in Mexico. It was a wonderful experience. Halfway through the film, I couldn't help but recall Barbie; I couldn't stop comparing the scene where they told her to 'close your eyes and feel.'
    I distinctly remember wishing they had shown the curse and miracle of being a woman or simply a person in this world. I couldn't resist wanting to see the heartbreaking development of looking at the world and its beauty. This was eloquently explained in the scene featuring the poor people in the Alexandria segment. We went from seeing everything in black and white to vibrant colors that were overwhelming, ultimately reaching a maturity and seeing the world as it is - full of ups and downs, pain, and joy.
    I witnessed the growth of a person, the innocence, and how it evolves into a more mature and human path. I'll have to watch it more times because I loved seeing the world through that small window named Bella.

      Maybe ‘Barbie’ is a “feeling man’s” ‘Poor Things’. It wasn’t necessary or feminist at all for you to compare two movies that tackle similar themes. Why can’t they both be good movies that help women? I watched Barbie with my mother, and towards the end we just looked at each other and cried. That’s the whole point, you have to feel it. I don’t think you need to put down other women that like Barbie by saying it is less of an intellectual experience. Just completely unnecessary to me.

    I do not see poor things as a feminist movie at all. Bella has the brain of a child. How can a child consent to sex? Bella is manipulated and exploited by the men in her life with the exception of Ramy’s character. When she first meets Duncan, he abuses her. of what it is because it feels good but she’s a child. This is not a movie about a young girl, sexual awakening, Bella is a child why are people saying this this is a movie about pedophiles

    • @kris5465
      @kris5465 3 месяца назад +2

      Did we see the same movie?
      Bella's progression is at an accelerated rate, as is stated and shown. She progresses from toddler to adult young woman in a mere few years. Her mental age is probably not that of an adult yet when she meets Duncan, but at that point she is definitely not a baby.
      Duncan does not know about Bella's background. He sees an adult woman. It could raise questions as to why Duncan would be attracted to her so much, though. I think it is because of her rebellious nature. He does use her, though, like all men in the movie.
      You praise Ramy's character (Max), yet you completely overlook that Max does know where Bella comes from, has a front row seat to her mental development, yet it is he who falls in love with her way earlier than Bella meets Duncan. Max does nothing about Bella's situation, is just being upset about it for a bit, but goes along with it like with everything else. He even repeats the experiment with Margaret Qualley's character. He wants to marry Bella and keep her inside the house for herself. And somehow you think this is the good guy?
      All men in this movie are warped and awful. Bella is not the "poor thing", the men are.

    • @nicolea6596
      @nicolea6596 3 месяца назад +1

      @@kris5465 thank you for this. I agree with Max. I also felt like he was manipulated by God. He seemed to me in the beginning to have no interest in her but as soon as God suggests to marry her, all of a sudden he’s in love with her. Duncan abuses Bella at the first meeting. Yes he doesn’t know anything about her but we do. She is a child, and this movie is basically about a child discovering sex. And we are witnesses to it. I think everyone in the film is a poor thing.

      @@kris5465 False, Bella doesn't even walk or talk properly when Max professes her love for her and Duncan has no issue whisking her away and repeatedly sleeping with her. The fact that some many cannot see the grooming at play is EXACTLY why IRL groomers get away with their behaviour.

    I love both films. Barbie sugars the pill of feminist discourse, and subverts the genre; Poor Things is aimed at an arthouse crowd and a a metaphor for the unpacking of Victorian puritanism. It also alludes to Burke and Hare.

  • @domoneeko6723
    @domoneeko6723 2 месяца назад +1

    When you comment about Poor Things, please REMEMBER that Bella has the mind of a child inside the body of an adult who was exposed very early by modern standards to the adult world by a marriage proposal and beyond. I believe in this timeline, the age gap was normal in marriages. But in this story, the curiosity of experience, naivety of a child, and the will of a defiant youth plays a big role in telling a story. I think the politics of feminism is very very minor in this movie. But if you insist on feminism as a big thing in all movies, you should acknowledge that every structure, every origin of a sport, and every industry you see in a movie was built by men and so serves as a natural counter to your feminist belief. Feminism is a good idea and I support it but please let us compare fairly organ to organ only excluding the sexy parts.

    Didn't see Poor Things yet, but I loved your take on Barbie! I guess it's not only a "feminism 101" but an exploitative neoliberal take on feminism (and even femininity) that is completely bound to a capitalist worldview in service of marketing an idea that only serves to make people buy dolls after they leave the theater and make them forget about real world problems, such as the whole structre (in the marxist sense) that makes the movie Barbie possible.
    I laughed so hard in the begining of the film when they show 2 barbies taking the trash out on margot robbie's neighborhood, and i was like "oh yeah, they still exploit workers in barbie land, nothing changes, really."

    Ugh thank you for this! I just watched Poor Things w my husband and at the end I was like, "Why aren't people excited about the feminist message here as much as Barbie!??"
    Like you said, Barbie was BASIC feminism 101, literally coated in bright pink so its palatable to the masses. Poor Things shows darker themes we don't like to address, like the spectrum of weird male desires but also, what is wrong with sex work if a woman consents to it. Bella weighs that its worth it to endure sex work (having no other skills yet) to earn money so she can spend the rest of her time studying to be a doctor... Thats her choice! Meanwhile the men around her try to trap her in various ways - in a home, in marriage, and attempted genital mutilation to take away what she finds pleasurable. This is all things that happen in reality STILL and a much darker/serious portrayal of patriarchy.. its not just horses and widescreen televisions.

    No no, although I am a greek and I support 200% Lanthimos since his first steps in Greece, the power key in Poor things are the aesthetics, not the feminism, which is totally for male fantasy well played. Barbie shows not only one exceptional woman (by beauty or brains) but multiple trying to coexist and ground their confidence not by comparing one to another, but each one for herself. Barbie is pretty forward in that manner with her crying scene, introducing us to this concept that no other movie has made!! Bella on the other half has indeed way more trouble with troubled men (both dancan and in paris) and it is very optimistic how she maintains her raw confidence by being "weird" and showing the middle finger to societal norms, indeed. BUT... She s written to be the exceptional, the only-woman-in-her-universe-trope. They even wrote a new woman-experiment to juxtapose how stupid and slow-evolved she proved compared to Bella. And her hunger for rawness is played clearly as a sexy attribute that attracts men more than she gets her into trouble, lets be real with ourselves😅 Meanwhile, Barbie's exceptional beauty is played as a constraint to prove her skills and the character to others wgich is a very revolutionary and empowering message for all girls in their 20's. That's why I think it takes way more feminist writing to build an arc with a character like Barbie. But I still love Emma's raw empowering energy and of course, Lanthimos aesthetics ❤

    First I have to say that the plot summary and description was very misleading. This movie was very disturbing. I watched it on Hulu last night. I actually fixed a plate of food right when it came on. I was not able to eat my food. Due to all the disturbing imagery. Like the cutting up of brains, and poking scissors into people's eye balls and etc. Couldn't really figure out what was going on with Emma Stone in the beginning. Didn't know if she was supposed to be a retard or some kind of experiment. But it didn't look like she was having fun in the beginning. It was very weird. I definitely ended up throwing my plate of food away. ............................................... This is what I was expecting from the description. I thought it was going to be some kind of time travel thing. Maybe she dies during slavery times. Comes back to life and lives for centuries. And she lives through different times and racism in America. Maybe she spends her new life trying to help Black people fight racism and even the rights of Gay and Lesbian people also. That is kind of like what I thought I was going to see. ............................................................... I did watch the entire film. It was so strange and different, that I had to keep watching. It was weird and disturbing and uncomfortable. But it still was interesting. You can't say the film was not interesting. However, it is not a movie that I will watch a second time. I never laughed during the entire film. I know the writers and whoever meant for certain parts to be funny. I cracked a smile a few times. But nothing really made me laugh. The disturbing parts kind of just sucked all the humor out of everything. One thing, that kept me watching till the end was all the nudity and sex scenes. I am a guy. So she was willing to take her clothes off. And often in this film. So that kept me watching too. And also, I know the actress. She's a child star. I was watching movies with her (Emma Stone) since when I was a kid. I seen a lot of her child work. This may have been the first time I seen her as an adult. So that made it interesting too. But very misleading description. I have just subj8scribed to your channel. So congrats, you just gained another one. I am an advocate on this platform for engaging with others and supporting one another. And returning love and reciprocating feedback. I think that kind of community on here is what we need. If there were more people like me, you might have an extra 500 fans and friends to your channel; right now. Extra. I truly am being sincere when I write that. I have looked at your content. My wife and I went out for a rare trip to the movies she saw Barbie and I saw Oppenheimer. "... a movie about the evil corporations produced by the evil corporations ..."
    Great line - so true. Remember that cinema and TV are both art forms and businesses.
    The art is just too expensive to make without lots of money and you can't get kind of money without a prospect of big profits (and movies are notoriously risky investments). Makes no difference whether they come via box office or merchandising. I've worked on kids shows for Mattel where the characters brought their toys to life for the kids, who then hassled their parents to buy all the toys.
    01:35
    "... I think Barbie is just a very weak feminist statement..."
    If I were looking for feminist statements, this is not where I would start and more than I would look for films about the meaning of life starring Sly Stallone.
    03:02
    The reviews on Poor Things have been so positive and the concept behind it so interesting that I'll have to see it. Glad you liked it too.
    Wait Poor Things is you? Reconstructed from the dead with lots of sex? Could that explain why you are single?
    05:04
    "... it's not about the gender, it's about your brains ..."
    When I was a boy I believed (and I suspect was encouraged to believe) that boys were physically stronger, were emotionally tougher and were smarter than girls. Over the decades I've come to understand that the last two were quite wrong and as for the first, well we have female firefighters and soldiers now, so even that is suspect.

    Why have they made up Willem Dafoe to look like Kirk Douglas in his dotage?
    Do you really think most American men are put off by smart women?
    Wouldn't smart men (yes they do exist) want relationships with smart women?
    Maybe you're living in a neighborhood with mostly dumb men who fear you?

      Well I'm a little mystified. Is RUclips Liz we see here an AI driven avatar?
      Are you part of another Russian internet disinformation scheme? (I don't suppose you would admit it if you were).
      RUclips Liz sure looks attractive. She feels like someone who has been around a bit, has had a decent education, has lived in vastly different cultures, makes interesting conversation, is independent minded with a lovely sense of humour that shows a slightly sarcastic edge and yes, has standards and expectations of other people (which IMHO comes across as being reliable and trustworthy). Why is real Liz not having to beat off hordes of smart, decent (if maybe not cute 10/10 and ripped) guys with a stick? Does the real Liz have terrible body odour or something?
      Does being blunt and "telling it like it is" generate female incels in NYC? I just don't get it.
      I have a good friend I've known for many years who lives in LA (incidentally she is also ethnic Asian) who used to be my producer (i.e. my boss) and she is smart, attractive, friendly but - like a typical producer - can be very blunt (but not to the point of insensitivity). We had a wonderful time for a while many years ago then reality intervened and our paths diverged, but had that not happened we might well be together today. Mutual love and admiration works wonders.
      Churchill once described Russia as "...a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma... "
      Maybe that also applies generally to Russian women?
