To Zilla cabs: I just want to say that I thoroughly enjoy watching and listening to your speaker comparisons, and have learned a lot because of them. I have been blasted and critiqued for a comment that I made about how you tested the evh speaker. I am not familiar with or have ever had a chance to play through an evh amp with the evh speaker. My comment about wanting to hear both of those speakers in a clean, edge of breakup and crunch and lead comparison was because I might try a different speaker in my Marshall dsl40cr at some point in time.
That's cool, do you happen to have a link? The EVH is the G12M Greenback Heritage series with a different label, as it's stated in every Celestion brochure since it appeared. So it's 20 W because the Heritage series forces the marketing gimmick. The whole story was told in detail by the Celestion representative that made the deal with Eddie (I have the RUclips link to that conversation, I'm not sure if it would be marked as spam if I post it). Excerpt from the 2011 Celestion brochure: _Throughout his career, whether in the studio or on the stage, the Celestion 20-watt ‘Greenback’ has played an essential role to Edward Van Halen in making the tones that rewrote the book on guitar sound. When it came time to select speakers for his new EVH Brand 5150-III signature amp, there was only one choice - Celestion._ _The Heritage Series G12M faithfully reproduces the sonic qualities of the original ’60s version Greenback used to make EVH tone from day one. With the addition of a black rear can featuring the EVH logo and his unmistakable red, white and black stripes, the G12EVH was born. Unmistakable look, but more importantly unmistakable tone._
@@riangariangathe greenbacks that Eddie used were rated for 20 watts. In 65 when Celestion released the G12M (guitar, 12”, medium weight magnet), they had rated them for 20 watts. In 68, Jim Marshall contacted Celestion and asked them to re-rate the speakers. Celestion rated them up to 25 watts. The cab that Eddie used was a 68 Marshall cab from before the rating change, so for the sake of historical accuracy, Eddie asked for his signature speakers to be labeled for 20 watts, even if they’re actually rated for 25.
@@zanzabar4ky7 I said the 20 W label is a marketing gimmick mate. I doubt they'd use very different coils from the G12M GB Classic Series. But it's cool to have an actual confirmation from Celestion.
I’ve recently been running my vintage mark iic+ through evh’s rather than the standard v30 associated with metal. It’s made me actually fall in love with the amp where as usually I hated dialing it in
Awesome test. I would love to hear their take on the VHT Chrome speaker. IMO, it sounds like a V30, but with a but more body. Extremely well balanced. It's an exceptional speaker and nobody knows about it.
The EVH is A. It has the depth and a muted top end that keeps it from being spiky. Super forgiving speaker to mic up. People will initially think it's too dark but through an EVH 5153 which has a ton of high end it's perfect.
IDK how it pairs in real (physical) playing through a cab but I love pairing IRs of EVH with V30. My favorite combo of speakers in this context tbh. This blend together smooths out V30 slightly and it works well in heavier rock or not too extreme metal playing
Maybe he captured the IR's for the GGD Contenders pack while this video was being recorded? Or perhaps he is updating his IR's? You could be right as well.
I've tried the EVH speaker through IR's and they pretty much sound exactly like Greenback's (I know they are inspired by the old heritage version from the 60's If I recall correctly) but I can't really tell much of a difference even between them and modern day g12m greenbacks side by side for the most part. G12m's are a bit cheaper, bonus.
I've made 1x12 semiopen cab for bed room practicing I wanted Heritage but couldn't find that one here so I got the EVH 15 Ohm over the V30 just cuz it has only 96dB Eventhough I never crank master volume more than 30% on 1 Watt tube amp 😂 cuz it's freak loud anyway
Anything that has any connection to Greenback speakers must be good in my book. It might be the best M option of the Greenbacks. Not as fizy as the China 25Watt M. But also different from 20 Watt Heritage version. With some amplifiers, it sounds great. At one moment, it was even cheap, considering that it was made in the UK. It has one of those quintessential Celestion sounds. One could even say that it has the Marshall tone.
Love these. I had some loaded in a Soldano and they’ve gotta be one of the better Greenback style speakers out there. Definitely a more modern shape than the standard GB.
The "standard Greenback" or Classic Series is actually the modern take on the Greenback speaker. The Heritage Series or EVH is actually called G12M-67 because it tries to get that Greenback sound of the late 1960s.
I didn’t like the EVH Celestion’s..I had a matching EVH 4x12 with my 5150..it sounded like there was a blanket over the cab..I like it mic’ed up,or an IR,but in the room standing in front of it,too dark, especially compared to my V30 cabs..
I don't know what you guys were trying to show with this shootout, but I would have got a better idea of what these speakers were all about if you had clean, edge of breakup, and crunch and lead tones.
The EVH has only ever been released with a high gain amp (5150 III). They are meant for high gain. The video title is "Nolly's Thoughts", have you ever seen a Nolly video? Zilla make pretty perfect videos and it costs you fawk all to watch them. You need to learn some respect. Go buy the speakers and do the test yourself! Especially instead of whining about it...
@@colemcdaniel5468- see my comment to Zilla cabs of why I wanted to hear those speakers in a clean, edge of break up and crunch and lead comparison. No whining at all on my part. I was just making a simple request, no disrespect towards Zilla cabs.
Have you tried the EVH? Let us know below!
It's a really underrated speaker in my opinion
Certainly underrated. It's one of the best options out there.
Yep, I use it more than 10 years ( EVH 5150 III 100 + 4x12 EVH cab) from blues to modern down tuned metal sounds excellent
Yes I have it in my 1x12 Evh cabinet sounds amazing with my Evh 5150 Lbx Stealth……😀👍
I have the EVH 5150iii 4x12 cab among a handful of other cabs. These speakers are amazing.

Thanks for these videos. I see myself rewatching a bunch when there’s a cab to be built
FYI, Celestion has confirmed that the EVH is rated to handle 25 watts. They just labeled it 20 watts because that's what Ed wanted lol.

I wrote them as well and they told me they are 25.
@@riangariangathr evh cabs with them are rated at 25w, 50w and 100w but with 20w speakers. That wouldn't make any sense if they were not actually 25w.

Björn Gelotte is using the evh speakers in his live rig now, regarding to their latest rig rundown video.
I love this thing, whether it's this one or the heritage they're just so charming especially in a marshall.
Been tempted to put one I a cornford 6W as a practise amp.
Can we just all admit that the EVH, Creamback, Greenback and Vintage 30 speakers all sound great and have their place in a mix?! 😊

Was it 8 or 16 ohm?
I'd love to hear some single coil low-gain sounds in a 1x12 with the EVH

I run a mixed cab of evh and v30s with a triple rec and it sounds absolutely monstrous. Give it a try for a massive sound
A deffo sounds flatter than B. B sounds like a vinyl LP that's just been cleaned and played with a new cartridge.
EVH...One of the LEAST ear fatiguing speakers with high gain.
Definitely punches above its weight wattage wise.
Why was Nolly there recording a bunch of cabs? New plugin coming?

🔥 Another good one
all speakers handle above the rate some as high as 40 watts more rms and even more max brief
It’s hard to say no to a greenie variant for ball crushing metal tones - sounds thick and punchy! 🍻
B is V30
You guys are going to need new riffs soon, and speakers! You're hurtling through all known speakers! 😎
The very first riff should carry through both speakers
It does, it technically starts with B
It's like a green back but with wattage. I would rather have these and V30's or 75w Cream backs with anything else.
A is V30, B is EVH…I’d put money on it.
i dont think so!
As someone who owns several of both, I'll take that wager.
It’s the opposite.
B is V30 imo
Cool
I don't know what you guys were trying to show with this shootout, but I would have got a better idea of what these speakers were all about if you had clean, edge of breakup, and crunch and lead tones.
They were going for a comparison strictly with saturated guitars in a metal context. This isn’t meant to be a complete comparison.

what’s the obsession with detuned crap rock?
It’s called matter of opinion. People like what they like. Why should you care?
I see a lot of punk on your channel. People said that about punk. Maybe dont judge. 🤷♂
it's not even that "detuned" but ok.
