- There are many different styles of mountain bikes available, from big travel Downhill (DH) bikes to featherweight Cross Country (XC) bikes. The larger travel Enduro bike has become very popular over the past few years, but for many people, the Trail bike might be the perfect option for everyday riding, especially for those who are looking for great pedaling and maximum fun!

Trek Fuel 9.7 2017 model love it oh by the way it’s in my house too 😅
propain spindrift, calibre bossnut, haibike allmtn 7 (e-mtb)
I've got the 2020 vitus mythique and it's sick! Been upgrading the bike and I love it.
I have old(er) Scott Genius LT 2017 with plus tyres and 160 mm travel but these days I mostly ride my full custom NS Essentric - 140 mm HT is a way more fun on my local trails.
As your skill progresses you may find that you are overbiked and go for downgrade.
2020 Norco Fluid FS2 but recently slackened the head angle from 66.5 to 65 degrees.
Always a pleasure to see Doddy explaining and riding bikes in the same video!
I really wish more bike manufacturers makes bikes like this.
Modern geo, good components, tough alu frame, decent amount of travel and very good price.
This kind of bike with normal maintenance can last for years, without worrying.
Yea I like to watch expensive bike reviews, but in last few years bikes become ridiculous expensive, even lowest models.
Hear, hear!
The bang for your buck with this bike is exceptional!
That's why I buy at aliexpress. This bike looks like the Himalo frame that's being sold at $450.
Privateer make a good stab at this too.
I have built a couple of months ago from parts a 2021 nukeproof scout 290. I spent a fair price at £2500. It’s perfect for what I ride. However I want buy another frame a nukeproof Giga Looking at £6000
Unless you're racing a specific discipline I feel like trail bikes are the way to go. The perfect mix of fast and rowdy
Another great vid. Would love to see a tech video about how/why anti squat works?
I feel mtb manufacturers have forgetting about categories, it used to be that xc bikes had steep head angles, trail bikes were slacker but not too slack, and enduro bikes were very slack, but now xc bikes are getting as slack as trail bikes from a few years ago, and trail bikes are getting as slack as enduro bikes, even approaching downhill bike angles, for example the new trek fuel ex can go as slack as 63.5, which is slacker than their enduro bike, I fear that eventually every bike from xc through to downhill will have the same head angle.
Awesome bikes from Vitus! Love mine! 🔥🤘
Love the vids keep it up!!👍🔥🔥
I feel like it depends on your intentions.
You like flow trails with hills and like to hit higher speeds, go XC.
You like going to nice varied trails with a good amount of climbs and descents with some technical stuff, go trail/all mountain.
You like to go the the bike parks, go enduro !
Best summary ever
Great to see a video on the budget end of the market.
I've got an Orbea Occam and I think it's just about perfect for my Colorado trails. It hits that sweet spot for climbing and descending.
Still rocking a 2020 mythique. Vitus makes quality stuff. Been rocking it three years and it’s handled bike parks here in CO and a couple on the east coast and all the single track I can throw at it.
I know this video is almost a year old but it was just what I needed. I have been trying to decide between an enduro nukeproof mega and vitus escarpe trail and this sealed it for me. Vitus is one of the best bang for buck brands out there. I love my 2020 Sentier but I need a full sus. Thank you so much for all the info.
Love the little nose manuals on the slabs Doddy. They're steeper than they look on camera
Great vid! Thanks for the info. I am thinking of going from a HT to a full-sus. Any tips on additional things I have to look out for to maintain and how to use the full-sus vs HT? Like what is anti-squat and how does it work? Things like that...
My GF had a CF Vitus road bike. Well priced, nice group set and beautiful frame and finish. I’d not think twice about getting a Vitus, great value.
That external routing is a plus, if you ask me!
Lots'a love, cheers, & Mabuhay, from tropical Philippines! #RideOn #KeepBiking
Most underrated bike with modern geometry to excell on the downhill is the external cable routing Marin Rift Zone 3. It already has through axles, a dropper and upgrades that just make it better.
I have the VRX from a few years back, been good for everything I've needed so far
Great
all good advice, I cannot believe I used to go over terrain like and worse than this with no suspension, no dropper post, and cantilevers, and definitely no disc brakes! back in the early 90's with me hanging over the handlebars desperately shifting my weight to the back in that position that 90's bikes put you in
Yea I remember those days on my Raleigh Mustang..... These days I ofen told that a trail I'm about yo ride is not a good idea on my Vitus sentier vr trail hardtail. Its usually some kid riding a long travel enduro bike as I'm.about to drop into a well groomed man made oversized bmx track.
ABSOLUTELY! 💥💯💥
Thank you Doddy for solidifying my choice of bike. I love my 2020 Stumpjumper Evo 140mm 29r (Troy Lee Designs Limited Edition) 👊🏽😉
Should of got a YT IZZO
I have a 2019 Cannondale Jekyll and really fancy a mid travel 29er. It uses the fox Gemini shock which doddy mentions where you can reduce rear travel from 165mm to 135mm. I like the look of the nukeproof reactor 290 in carbon, it'd be perfect for the mixed riding round where I live (quantocks).
I never thought much about Vitus bikes, and then I wanted a cheap e bike, I've had several before, high spec £6/7k +. I got the Vitus E Sommet for £4200 off chain reaction and it's by far the best e bike I've ridden. spec is great, not had to change anything, reliable and fun. Well happy with it.
kinda mad you didnt show the jets flying over on the outro lol
Also jealous being in the US that you can bike around the Mach Loop. Already wanted to visit that area just for the jets. Now I am gonna add some biking to the mix
The Mythique is so good. I ride the 2022 Vitus Sommet Enduro bike and love it
Trail vs "Downcountry" is big on my mind at the moment. I'm trying to decided if I should plan to upgrade wheels and to 130mm pike on my D7, which is really suited for the green and blue trails I'm riding so far (aswell as ridding to work sometimes and rides with my kids). Or not do any upgrades and work towards a trail bike instead with the slight possibility I might start riding hard enough to need one.
I have an On One Big Dog SX XL I'm 6'1 it's fits very well I use it for trails and a bit of XC covering 20-30 miles and is cracking value.
I'm looking at either a Vitus Mythique or a Nukeproof Reactor on a CTW scheme.
I ride a 2021 Giant Trance - 130mm front, 115mm rear. For 95% of my riding, which is on pretty sedate single track in western Minnesota, that's more than ample (I'm seldom more than 2-3 feet off the ground). I used it for a first xc race for fun, and it's pretty fair to say that any weaknesses were more rider than bike. I'm actually planning a couple xc races next year and the only bike change I'm planning is a set of lighter tires and clipless pedals. I maybe get one park visit in per year - maybe if I were doing more of that, I'd feel like getting a more aggressive bike. But the lower travel on local area trails feels like a nice compromise where I can still feel the trail through the bike but it tames the harshness of harder hits.
I actually started on this bike have lots of love for it. Would love another trance in the future. Riding in so cal I upgraded to a more travel bike because of the bike parks around me
Just ordered a 2022 Giant Trance 29, the high spec alu model. Should be arriving somewhere next week, can't wait!!
Coed y is great. The Tarw Du trail is something quite special for a trail centre. Up there with Comrie Croft for me.
Love my Polygon Siskiu T8. Brilliant all-rounder trail bike and another option for incredible value for money.
Lucky. They are always out of stock.!
Polygon D7 for me and the geometry is great for my needs. I will upgrade the wheels eventually and then maybe the fork to a 130 34 step-cast Fox. I am light and don't need big travel like the ''Large'' guys to suck up the rough stuff!
Did you just call me fat? 😋
I still ride and love my 2004 Trek Palamino for single track in my area...SLX hydraulic disk brakes and Crank Bros Joplin -heavier oil and more air pressure-dropper post added :)
I ride a commencal meta TR. 160mm and 140mm it’s more like a mini enduro. Can really handle the bike park, enduro racing and it doesn’t seem like too much bike when I wanna do some local pedal mission.
I used to go to Coed y Brenin in the early to late 90s and it was great. Still have my Kona Kuku that I rode there.
Brilliant video. I’ve just bought the vrx today. Can’t bloody wait
How has it been? Got mine in March, I fall more and more in love with it every ride!
@@AdventureRich it’s been excellent. Went to fort William last week and don’t normally do black routes but thought I’d give it a try and it cut through the technical parts like butter. I will be trying all the black routes in the future thanks to this bike
That's great to hear! 🤙🏽
Still Riding my 2010 Santa Cruz Heckler, 2007 Fox rlc air 140mm front 32mm fork, fox dhx 5.0 air in the rear, single ring front with 12 speed eagle rear, on stans flow mk3 26" rims, still love it was a -30lbs bike triple ring front when built more for xc, now its 31.2lbs, but fit for welsh trail centre riding, with Afan, and Cwm carn on my door.
My favorite trail system is HAFTA in Ontario Canada, it's amazing in all seasons
I have a question for Doddy and Anna... Shimano spec their brake disc rotors to 1.8mm thick... But companies like TRP and Galfer and Magura offer discs in 2.0mm or thicker... Could I get better stopping power out of my Shimano brakes simply by using a thicker disc? I want to upgrade but don't have alot of money but could use my ice tech rotors replaced soon and wanted to go bigger but should I also go thicker? Thanks for the help. Sorry for the book of a question.
#askgmbntech You mentioned anti squat here, but how does it actually work? Is it geometry, I can't see how the derailleur can control the shock, right?!
Best all around: Pivot Trail 429 enduro.
Why because I do not go to Bike parks/ski resorts and just coast downhill and then ride a lift or shuttle up.
I had a Trek 140mm FOX/TREK shock and 140 FOX performance 36 fork bike previously and it was garbage compared to my 120mm FOX Factory rear travel and 140mm FOX Factory 36 fork!!!
I had just done a rebuild/service on the Trek also so the crap ride was not due to lack of service/maintenance.
My T429 feels better in build quality, ride quality and comfort by far over the TREK. The T429 somehow feels like it has more travel than the TREK downhill and is MUCH more EFFICIENT pedaling than the Trek.
I live and ride in the Midatlantic and Appalachian region. For me and my riding it is perfect!
Stuff did not come poorly manufactured and fail like the Trek.
I have had zero problems in my year of riding the PIVOT!
Depending on what you want and the mountains, surface you ride, I feel most do not need a 140 mm or more travel bike.
I think a well designed and quality controlled frame, suspension etc. makes a big difference.
In the end test ride as many bikes as you can.
Pick what you like and ride the fecal matter out of it, with a big smile on your face!!!!
That's just made my mind up for me 😂
How does it compare to your custom Mondraker trail bike?
You're 100% right and I know for the majority of what I ride a trail bike would probs be a better choice but... coming from a DH past I also want something a bit more for when I want to give it a bit of hammer. I'm also a tart and bigger bikes just look better to my eyes.
I ride a down country bike and I'm ver happy with it, but... Always with an eye in the trail bikes to see what's going on. What do you think of the new Commencal TEMPO? Can we expect a review from you of it?
#askgmbntech - ok Doddy, you dropped the Trunnion shock knowledge there - so what are the pros and cons versus a 'Normal' mount?
160/150 Stumpjumper Evo Expert for even climbing and descending with technical granite rock areas. I would get a dirt jumper for a small bike to practice my jumping skills with.
Yes!
I've got an Orbea Occam (I added a 150mm RS Domain) and I have a Scott Scale 920 which I rebuild for the 3rd time now (2013 model) and I am at the moment thinking about whats next... XC Full Sus or DH Bike?...
I wish every manufacturer provided full information about the bike on their specifications pages. I mean, beside all components and sizes (some even won't tell you headset size!), most won't tell you about the bearings. There should be mandatory section for suspension: anti-squat, anit-rise, progression. Some started doing that, but it is few and far between. Hard to know what bike suits you and the targeted trails and how it will ride when you don't really know how it is designed. Vitus did well on the components and geo side, but failed with the suspension specifications
I ride a trail bike (BMC Speedfox), and I'm really happy how it handles both the uphill and downhill. It really fits me : jack of all trades, master of none :D
I love my Speedfox too!
I have had XC all the way to DH. I settled on a trail bike and a super enduro bike. Trail bike with 65.5 HA and the enduro with 63.5 HA
what pedals are those?
I want that AMP as soon as they come back in stock! I could get the VRX but I might just wait for the AMP.
Did you get the AMP? How is it? I was in the same position, but too impatient to wait. Got me the VRX, love the bloody thing more and more every day! 😁
Nothing can beat a hardtail XC bike as a beginner. Easy setup, low maintanence cost, cheap(ish).
I am still riding great fun even if you can ride better and have more skills.
I say yes. Though a downcountry bike would be mostly ideal for most riders (depending on area of course), a trail bike is going to be built to be more forgiving which makes it perfect for a beginner. Later on if the rider wants to step out to something, go for it.
trail bikes are not more forgiving than enduro bikes. theyre more forgiving than xc bikes. it depends on terrain, not rider. a good rider can take an xc bike or even a gravel bike down whistler but that doesnt make the bike good.
people going on more gnarly stuff should get an enduro bike. people who dont should get a trail bike (lighter, better pedaling). bike park only? dh. definitely wouldn't get an xc bike by default tho.
I will say that still a enduro is king, but it will come at a cost with high end components and suspension to make up for its downhill bias.
With more limited budget a trailbike will suit most people.
Down country is prone to extinction, it’s just not enough when it gets rough, actually despite the tire choice there’s no difference between down country and a proper xc rig these days.
I have a carbon Cube Hardtail and a 2021 Fuel EX8. Guess which one gets left in the garage the most!
The Fuel does it all - yes it is overkill for a bit of XC across to the South Downs, but on the more interesting bits it’s perfect. Think the Cube will be on eBay soon and then can upgrade my (whisper it) road bike 🤣
I'd ditch the road bike idea and get out on the Cube more, you will regret it. I've got a 2016 BMC team machine slr1 and a 2018 Cervelo R3 Ultegra, like new, never use them now, every ride, their was always a near miss or an incident, too dangerous now. I've got a carbon Scott Scale 710 hardtail and a Yeti Arc that I can ride on road, on trails, cycle paths, off road, anywhere, the main thing is I'm not confined to roads. I'm getting a Whyte 905 in the new year, not spending anymore on roadbikes!
My 2022 Giant Trance 27.5 climbs like a beast with 160mm fork and 145mm shock
I have been riding a Specialized rock hopper for the last six years did a few upgrades but I finally decided to get a XC bike so off to my local bike shop to get one, after talking with the shop owner for about a haft hour about my riding and where I ride he suggested I would be better to get a trail bike so I walked out with KHS 6500 trail and I happy he suggested it (P.S KHS 6500 is fairly similar to the featured bike in the video)
Personally, i prefer downcountry. It's what i ride and it's great for long distances and performs well in trails...at least for my skill level and type of riding. Looking at those around me, i think downcountry is what suits most of us here where i live but then most of us here only want the most flashiest bike we can afford 🙄. But i do agree that a (true) trail bike is indeed king.
On the trails that I have here at my end, XC & DC MTBs are very much suitable.
Lots'a love, cheers, & Mabuhay, from tropical Philippines! #RideOn #KeepBiking
@@yengsabio5315 same goes for me man! Anymore than 120-130mm you become a bit overbiked and struggle on the climbs
I prefur xc hardtails
@@James-mw6to Indeed!
@@Paganiproductions84 there's absolutely nothing wrong with HTs. I frequently lock out my rears too but...i kinda like some creature comforts while riding long days 😬
Next video could you please make a review of rockrider am 100s? Thanks
No point, am100 almost always out of stock, same with other decant decathlon bike😪
I like the bike, I for sure would have more than one bike, I just got fezzari cascade, very similar to that bike, good parts, also rebuilding an old specialized rockhopper, old hardtail, I want to see how much the bike can change with more modern parts, complete overhaul on this bike, even paint, but I got my eyes on one of those trek roscoe, and maybe a road bike later on, maybe
Definitely a great value-
@text-4378 hey how do I claim my entry?
Not going to lie all the diferant types off bikes you can get these days just confuse the crap out off me, just started mountan bikeing again after 20 odd years even if i could aford a new bike i wouldnt have a clue what to get!! both my bikes are about 15 years old, turns out one is a xc and the other is a trail bike i just googled it haha kinda makes sence after watching this video now as my hardtail isnt as nice to ride on steeper trails as my full sus but is a fair bit faster on the the flat stuff although dose have faster rolling tyres on it aswell witch i know makes a big diferance,
Yup I ride a trail use it for everything it’s great even from a 10 ft huck to flat it works
Nice one! They really are the do it all tool! 👊
I am right there with my Orbea Laufey and I love it, but for my style of riding I guess I would be better off with a downcountry bike, because I don't plan on sending big jumps and drops. So I make my trail hardtail a little lighter 🤟🏾
The oiz tr is for you ✌️
Laufey gang 🎉
@@Jean-jk4zv could be, but the geo is not suited for the steep and technical stuff I love to ride. For my home trails it would be perfect. Though I can not convince my spouse to get a XC bike, since I also own a gravel bike 😅
All-Mountain! Trail bike with a bit more beef just not as much as an enduro. Still fun on the boring bits but can handle more downhill and is a decent climber. If I could only pick one bike it would be an aggressive/hardcore hardtail.
Can’t say I disagree- great vid Doddy!
I’ll add, however, that I don’t think the industry has really totally figured out the gray area between XC bikes and trail bikes. Where I live in Minnesota, USA many folks don’t need the bigger travel of modern trail bikes (120-130 would be perfect), but we still benefit from the strength, geometry and comfort of a trail bike instead of XC.
Yes, I know what Down Country bikes are, but I feel many of those bikes are lacking the right approach for the terrain we have and many are too focused on racing….and a lot of them are just trail bikes with lighter components, or XC bikes with slightly more travel. There is a good size market for a bike with a rowdy (or more trail-focused) personality but still with only 120-130mm travel. Ibis Ripley comes to mind, but there aren’t as many real options here as you might expect.
The YT Izzo and Fezarri Signal Peak are both worth considering adding to your list.
I have a 120/130 66.5 norco fluid fs1 and I think its the perfect trail bike, the shorter travel makes it very fun and poppy, its very agile, but its also very stable, you can bomb down rough tracks as fast as you want, you can also ride down very steep double blacks, it feels good on flatter corners, its like a cross between a xc bike and an enduro bike, but of course norco messed it up with the new version by giving it 10mm more travel and making it a degree and a half slacker, so now its just your typical aggressive trail bike.
I wanted to buy a Vitus during the lockdowns but they were all sold, I ended up buying a Trek Fuel Ex5 which is a nice bike, the same with Vitus the alloy frame is the same on all alloy Trek Ex.
That's a great bike. Congrats!
I recently got an orbea occam and I couldn't be happier
We're glad you're enjoying it Francesco! 👍
I wish that cable routing over the bb shell was on their other frames like the sommet,. I absolutely despise those loops under the bb, it's stops me buying one, I don't think people would say that about routing over the bb. Vitus designer please change it on the next versions.
Most decent specced bikes are carbon these days, it would be nice to see more alloy options in bike ranges.
To start off, I'm old and retired and don't like my wheels off the ground too much - so jumps, drops, not really happening. But I do like to ride for miles and miles on the trails. I've got three primary bikes - a custom build Obed Boundary gravel bike, a much modified Salsa Cutthroat (mountain drive train, no suspension drop bar bike with 2.6 front, 2.4 back mtn tires), and the newest addition: a Revel Rascal full suspension with a Fox Factory shock and a Push coil. All of them run Hope Calipers and rotors. All Sram drivetrains.
Trail bikes are great but people always end up slowly turning them into enduro bikes. Burly tires , bigger fork etc lol
I'm glad Vitus has got rid of the seat stay bridge,I have a '15 escarpe and there is barely 2mm of clearance between the top of a tyre, high roller or minion and the bridge, even if any gravel gets on the tyre it scrapes away on it,all the paint went years ago and I'm slowly eating away at the metal, shit design. I think my year of escarpe was the first 27.5" wheeled one and I think they just tweaked the 26" frame to suit.
This bike is sold out everywhere!
Annoying! 😢
My longest travel bike is 140/130 and I ride all the same stuff as my buddies and their 160/whatever all mtn enduro bikes and have never felt under suspension. My next bike will probably be longer travel tho.
I ride a 120/130 trail bike and can keep up with my buddies on their enduro bikes too, I actually came from an enduro bike, I find the shorter travel trail bike much more fun, its responsive, agile and poppy, but its also stable, it makes small trail features fun, where the enduro bike would just steam roll over those small trail features like they weren't even there, making a lot of the not so steep tracks a bit boring.
I made the mistake of buying a honkin' Enduro bike as my first MTB purchase. Its great, and can do anything...but that gets me hurt. I ride my hardtail more often now bc i climb and enjoy actually feeling the terrain. Currently looking for the perfect happy medium...
I like that you can move a trail bike up or down the spectrum to be a comfortable xc bike or a 9-10ths All Mountain bike
For real. You are an angleset away from properly slack HTA with this
Crazy price for the top of the ranger, builds not to bad either
Mine is ht trail 2020.
I make it a point to buy nothing made in the USA other than some foods in the grocery stores, even then I get superior food shipped in. Does Vitus ship to the USA (Arizona)?
I have a road bike Lemond Zurich 2002 & my Norco VPS TEAM NS 2003 .
My norco charger was a beautiful bike years ago but was stolen
Brilliant bike. Unfortunately, my trail bike duties are satisfied by a capable hardtail. My next bike is an aggressive mullet machine for bike parks, enduro and big western descents that beat me up on the hardtail.
Same here, I've already got a 140mm trail hardtail and my second will be something more aggressive but not hardcore. I was thinking Canyon Spectral maybe, seems like a good compromise between enduro and trail. That being said if I was forced to have only one bike I'd probably go for trail full sus like the one here.
Mullets are the best
Something I'm looking for getting back on a bike after a few years away but so much has changed its getting confusing I rode DH years back but not going back for that more Trial or Enduro now it seems I've looked at rhe Vitus but it's just Ugly maybe the red and the thinness of the tubing some the Enduros look nice but being old skool I don't know the name from my day's I feel the safe thing is to stick to what I know but that seems to be nothing now haha!
See I rode the Giant ATX one and two and the Kona stinky DHs back in the day then moved to trials but back then trials was a 14 in frame kitted out for drops n hopping bars off bus shelters in the streets so it's all new this to me but really want back on a bike I'm just not wanting to blow my wad on something not suitable so the modern trial bike full suspension definitely is whare I'll be starting that's a big help!
Very interesting. I looked up when the first bike park in Germany was founded and it‘s also 1996 but in comparison to the UK the idea never got traction here. I wonder why. Good video to make for GMBN auf Deutsch
Germans are just too sensible 😂
@@harryphillips3457 Na, we just like to administer ourselves to death. Maybe the application forms from 1997 are still at the local authorities, waiting to be signed by 487 persons.

Pivot Trail 429 or IBIS Ripley are the bikes for me at the moment, but they are too much expensive!!! I will keep my 2017 Intense ACV a bit longer
Where is this pls it looks awesome

Optic by night 💕💕💕💕💕
The only time I wish I had more travel than 140mm is on super burly double black (USA) trails....
i have an xc bike (custom 2015 fuji nevada 1.4 29er) and trail bike (2017 vitus escarpe deore upgraded to XT spec) and i do not need another or bigger bike where i live. Enduro and downhill bikes would be too burly and round here you have to ride up the hill to get down it or you're on the flood plain of the river severn and it's flat gravel (mostly national cycle route)
6:54 my escarpe has the same design but with a bridge and i can tell you this is the truth.
16:05 That's so sick. I wanna go one day.
I prefer a Brooklyn Machine Works for full on XC riding I find 100kg of steel helps me climb
I want a mountain trail bike with BMX handlebars .
We didn't have trails back in the '90s and were forced to break the law quite often
Just like a good hardtail
Think I'd buy the top spec version if it came in 27.5
Regular 27.5 is kinda not for many people most people go mullet/29 now
In your opinion. How would this bike compare to a lower end Trek Fuel EX?
Looks a decent bike for the price, but some of those welds look crap.
Well....hold on a sec #Doddy. If you're Nino Schurter riding his XC Scott Spark you can descend on an enduro track and keep up with the rest of them :)
