Dickey Betts is a national treasure. If you just stare at him and what he so effortlessly plays that brings so many memories of the priceless memories of The Allman Brothers Band you will realize it is a gift from God. Period. That's my belief.
Dickey is so intelligent in his playing and his melodies just wrap around your heart with joy and transcendent bliss. I l love his instrumentals and his country gems like "Pony Boy" snd "Blue Sky". He's a true Patriarch passing on his musical knowledge to his son, Duane. Rest in Peace, great American guitarist, Dickey. There will never be another song writer and brilliant, melodic guitarist like you.
That second theme first up tempo in the song is one of the most beautiful dual guitars in harmony parts ever written. These guys were only in their early 20's at the Fillmore peak. Amazing stuff.
It's wonderful to see the subtle feeling Dickey puts into this even after playing it so many times. He really has a deep connection with the Source of music.
The intro '' In memory of Elizabeth Reed '' my friend!!!...the most amazing song from Dicky Betts; Allman Brothers Band , the best southern -and not only- band Greetings from Greece!!!
Yes sir, and look- the gift keeps giving. His son and the others keeping it going makes it even more special. The bothers became much more than a great band, they are an on-going tradition and way of life!
Dickey Betts the last time I seen you with great southern at the Newton theater I was sitting below the soundboard you were on fire you played till 1am you are to me the best miss you guys enjoy your retirement
Just saw Duane last night with Devon Allman. They were fantastic! I came upon this video today and noticed that he was still playing the same guitar last night that he had in this video. Old Faithful 😊
So much great music. Dickey is back in great form as of 2014. Looked healthy and was playing as well as ever. That man has music flowing through every cell in his body.
***** ABB played their own style- defied category, but IMHO Dicky always had (has) old-school country technique. Elegant and lilting. Very exclusive club: Glen Campbell, James Burton, Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, Dicky Betts and a very select few others. Players who communicated so profoundly with a guitar and virtually no effects.
Hudson Valley Winery in like 1977 or so? I was there. Great concert. i remember standing right in front of the stage about 10 feet from Dickey. Outdoor show great sound. What a great memory !
Hey Yall. First off? I want to thank you all for your comments. But? please allow me to interject something here. I am seeing a lot of comments from folks who are sad to not see the "magic" in this video that we all know Duane & Dicky produced whenever the two of them touched their guitars. But? let me just say? Don't be sad folks! Granted, there is not a whole heck of a lot of "magic" going on HERE with this video. (As compared to their LIVE Gigs) But? try to remember friends? THIS is an INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO! JUST to show folks the "BASICS". All of that other "magic" & all? Heck, as any musician will tell ya, once the basic Song structure is developed? Most of that happens during the LIVE gigs my friends! When the Band is being DRIVEN by the Audience! ;-)
I saw Dickey in a little bar in Sarasota Fl in the mid to late 80's playing with a band called the Hurricanes. Only a handful of people in the place it has stuck with me ever since.
A.B.B. was amazing. No doubt. What I think that is great about the video is the father/son thing. I miss my dad terribly to this day and when I see videos like this, I just think it's so fantastic. These are the kinds of moments that life is really about, not drama and band infighting.
As a fan of the Allman Bros. as far back as 1971 this is great to see Dickie & son playing together particularly this song, the breakdown, how Duane plays following the same flow. Duane & Dickie together is like seeing Dickie the way he used to look back in the day. This is a rare treat I am so glad i got to see this. I thank you for the post, it was a pleasure to see & also to hear the 2 just playing this fantastic classic it is almost like hearing Duane Allman playing again. Peace
Ive always dug this VERY SMOOTH SOUND.... So Classic.. I always thought that it was the Hammond,(at the beginning)but,I didnt know that the Guitar was doing the Lead... This is just Koool Stuff.. Never get tired of listening to this tune.. Even when they are just practicing.. Great music..
So wonderful to watch and hear. Dickie was still playing with full powers, and its impossible not to see how the music oozes out of every cell in his body ("I play music, that's what I DO," he so memorably drawled). I've often thought that aside the melodic beauty in his music sits those visceral rhytmic qualities; that he dances with his music. Don't we see that here? I love it when a run propels him off the chair so as to achieve the dynamic nuancehe wants.
Fantastic! Father and son doing one of the greatest songs of all time. And your son Dickey, is hugely influenced by you. Great post. Surprised it hasnt recieved more comments really...
One of the great instrumentals of all time. I named my lttle girl Jessica, after the ABB song, written by Dickie! Thank you Mr. Betts for all the great music over the years.
I have run a "Breezers Musicfest" on beautiful Pensacola Beach, FL. for the past 6 years as it's the place of me birth and this year we're more then excited to have Duane Betts and his band joining our event. My buddy Brent the leader of "The Skydogs" a great band out of Birmingham has helped me run this all 6 years and his band is always there playing all throughout the festival and no Duane will be joining us. Brent is a Duane Allman clone. It's Sept. 22nd thru the 24th if anyone wants to come down or up depends where you are. ;) 21 people actually did not like this? :o
This is great!! Dickey's jumping around on that stool like he hasn't changed his underwear in 6 months. The Allman's really raised the bar for good guitar playing. I remember when Live at the Fillmore came out. That turned my head around big time. It was time to woodshed and learn at the feet of the masters. Thanks for posting!
I love and definitely appreciate so many types of music, but I must admit that I am not a HUGE Blues fan. A few years ago, I went to The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles with a buddy for a blues festival type thing. There was a band, (I cannot remember,) which was either the headliner or just prior to the headliner playing headline and I thought to myself and expressed to my buddy that the guitarist sounded soo much like Dickey Bettts. Lo and behold, it was his son.
Dickey is an underrated guitarists, but so influential in the ABB. Blue Sky, Jessica, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Etc..., Duane was the real deal, but it was Dickey who wrote more of the ABB tunes, and his play perfectly complimented Duane. Combining County, blues, jazz. The ABB will always be my favorite group.
Duane`s daughter commented in her book about her father was that he didn`t keep people in a band because he liked them as some people think and Dickey played his way in and would have played his way out if his playing wasn`t up to par and he is a song writer which Duane wasn`t !
Yes an American treasure without a doubt doesn't even begin to announce the greatness of this fine artist and his works. We are all mere mortals and we all make mistakes and I'm sure he's made his share but he has definitely contributed to the greatness of our culture in this country. When Donald Trump wins re-election in 2024 I hope he has an all-day Music Festival on the front lawn of the White House. The headliner can be Dicky and his son doing a tribute to the Allman Brothers Band special guest The Doobie Brothers and ZZ Top with a tribute to Dusty 😊
its all about the sweet sounding chords and flow the rest just comes to ya... can sure hear the difference in sound between the two.. no substitute for long hours of playing and being on the road that expierience and character just naturally comes through... he's the real deal even when he's loaded hope hes with us for many more years
Dickey is wired as fuck on here-he's great and I love him but he is GAKKED out- I love this tune-ive played it in cover bands all my life-and it never ceases to amaze me the crosssection of people it appeals to- thanks for postin'
I'm so used to hearing the studio version of this song, the one from Idlewild South, that in the end, I'm waiting for the percussion solo between Jamoe and Butch to kick in LOL....But that's when the song ends here...Yeah I know, it's only these two guys, but...hey! It's one of my favorite songs! What can I say! 😃
Oh and, before someone starts kicking my ass for saying "only these two guys", DISCLAIMER: I know who they are!...Father and son....As in..Father who named his son after his partner..on a coupled match that turned out to be the most well known guitar player tandem in the history of rock.. 😉
I don't know why Greg Allman did not invite Dickey Betts 2 The Allman Bros last gig,so much animosity with this crew why,he was one of the founding members of that band,Like Don Henley and Glen Frey with Don Felder of the Eagles..so much bullshit they R adults now and the kid stuff is in the past...cut the crap people we only live once, then is OVER!!! Dickey Betts is an awesome guitar player,so is his son!!
Dickie Betts is a master of self defence, likes to brawl and get in trouble. He is also one of the greatest guitarists of all time! The guy at the music store near me said, they would hang out and every bar they went to ,a fight .He's has a fucked up sense of humour i guess
Shred Sixsixsix Still Dickey Betts being at that show would had brought closure 2 the allman Bros band days,he is just 2 good and part of that early band that his absence just did not make sense!!!
Shred Sixsixsix I though U were real, but U R not,U just a full of crap person who don 't know shit about anything and just spew what's in your mind..so don't say anymore and just shut the fuck up and don't insult people U don't know!!!Stupid Ass!!!
To the person below who said 'Fuck Dickey Betts' -- Not all alcoholics are abusive. My dad was a drunk, no doubt, but never abused and we all loved him. A social worker said she could tell a lot from my good attitude towards my father because in her experience, offspring of abusive alcoholics hate the drunk parent. So I'd say the same about Duane -- if Dickey had been abusive, Duane wouldn't be in his band. Dickey and Duane are close father and son. I'm sorry if your father abused you, but Dickey Betts is not your dad.
lmao...it's so funny seeing his son play and make the same faces. he looks more like a clone than a son. I wonder if he came out of Dickey's ass. I can't believe it. he plays and moves like him too. awesome to see. thanks for the upload. peace...
duane [the first] had been known to get high.didn't stop him playing best electric guitar i ever heard. sadly you can't keep doing that for 40 years as i found to my cost. dickeeey as altar boy to duane but i would have been proud to be altar boy to dickeeey betts
I had a great time shooting this w Dickey and Duane and am playing the acoustic gtr in the background...a great day!
👍
Great fun fact I never knew that.
Dickey Betts is a national treasure. If you just stare at him and what he so effortlessly plays that brings so many memories of the priceless memories of The Allman Brothers Band you will realize it is a gift from God. Period. That's my belief.
Les Brers, High Falls, Beyound The Pale, Pegasus, Jessica ... Dickey wrote so many extraordinary instrumental tunes !!
There is an interview of him on YT where he says he will keep on writing. Who knows what amazing stuff he will come up with!!!
Dickey is so intelligent in his playing and his melodies just wrap around your heart with joy and transcendent bliss. I l love his instrumentals and his country gems like "Pony Boy" snd "Blue Sky". His son Duane really has it !
Thanks Dicky and Duane. This one is planted deep from years ago!
omg Duane Betts looks like his dad when he was young, even the gestures and movements of his legs
The intro '' In memory of Elizabeth Reed '' my friend!!!...the most amazing song from Dicky Betts;
Allman Brothers Band , the best southern -and not only- band

And got see him in his hometown of Sarasota Fl. Said he remembered going to the van Weezel theatre on field trips in elementary school 😀
Beautiful to see father and son together like this.
So much great music. Dickey is back in great form as of 2014. Looked healthy and was playing as well as ever. That man has music flowing through every cell in his body.

5:18 is when Duane 's solo starts... goosebumps.
Pure Gold!!! Thank you so much!!!!
Duane and Dickie were synergystic with each other, as was the whole band. they were magic.
Hey Yall. First off? I want to thank you all for your comments. But? please allow me to interject something here. I am seeing a lot of comments from folks who are sad to not see the "magic" in this video that we all know Duane & Dicky produced whenever the two of them touched their guitars.

I could fall asleep to this every evening as the rain falls against a tin roof in a little sleepy southern town 🍑

Daddy must be Proud!!!
You are MISSED DICKEY...
Come out with your handsome talented SoN.
Best to you Duane & your Dad❤🙏
So good! Dickie has to be very proud of his son's playing as well!
Dickey is just so damn good...
NOBODY CAN TAKE IT FROM DICKIE BETTS HES A LEGEND PRACTICE A LIFETIME AND WE CANT COMPARE SEEMS THE SON HAS IT IN HIS VEINS AS WELL
I saw Dickey in a little bar in Sarasota Fl in the mid to late 80's playing with a band called the Hurricanes. Only a handful of people in the place it has stuck with me ever since.
Look at the ol' man go, such memories.
Duane takes it on out.
Superb
I never realized how jazzy that tune is!
1st time I heard this tune was more than 40 years ago...still my favorite from the Live at Fillmore East album
A.B.B. was amazing. No doubt. What I think that is great about the video is the father/son thing. I miss my dad terribly to this day and when I see videos like this, I just think it's so fantastic. These are the kinds of moments that life is really about, not drama and band infighting.

Dickey is Amazing.

What a blessing to play-and so well-with your son
So happy that Dickey can talk to Duane about MUSIC!!!! Awesome chore!
Wayne Dent - dedicated Dickie's creation to my adopted ma, Jessie
Greg Allman wrote Jessica not Dickey
Omg Wayne, Gregg Allman wrote it.Your giving credit to the wrong person sir.
@@davidfoster7119 You should delete your comment, Dicky wrote "Jessica" not Greg.
Dickey you are a legend in my eyes and now your son can carry on that legend. Past present and future Love you always. Sounds fabulous. Amazing.
This song is so beautiful.
The Allman Bros Band was the best band ever.Duane,Rest In Peace.noone will ever take your place.

When I saw Great Southern in '06, Duane was in the group for a few shows and he was excellent.

The most beautiful piece of music ever written...
Their music still blows me away as it did as a yute.
Dickey is the greatest American player, composer, of all time.
❤️🎼🎸One listen is worth h a thousand memories😔❤️
Amazing stuff tbh . . . thanks for sharing

Dickie can barely sit still. He's still feelin it.
Really cool hearing the isolated parts.
Can't help but think Duane the 1st digging what Duane the 2nd doing on this. Hell, I only wish my own name was Duane so I could "third" it.
Dickey is the BeStts!
WOW,Very cool video,thanks for posting!
PRICELESS xxoos!!

Wow! That was very cool!
One of the greats..Looks like the apple didn't fall far from the tree, Duane is pretty darn good too.
I see palm trees swaying in the wind on a southern beach.
Great rhythm guitar Dickey.
Duane said several times Dickey was the great guitarist... He was just famous..
Great video. You are both very talented. Nadine
sweet
@TheEasyRiderr1 what did you expect? Dickey was like a blood brother to Duane!
Very cool
Guitar/Music Masterclass
