@misterOrca4 The one team 5Ds VS team Taiyo. It’s supposed to summon a super protection high rank monster that everyone there has but needs a normal monster to stay on the field for like 10 turns.
I liked the idea of normal monsters having the better stats and effect monsters having lower stats but made up for it with their abilities. For example, both Blue Eyes White Dragon and Galaxy Eyes Photon Dragon are lvl 8 monsters with the same exact stats except galaxy eyes has an effect that allows it to avoid battle destruction with stronger monsters. This already makes Galaxy Eyes better in every way with both having an effect and high stats. Effect monsters should have at least 100-300 less ATK/DEF than normal monsters of the same lvl then their abilities will give them an edge on the field. Whether it’s to serve as utility, disrupt the opponent by weakening their monsters or preventing the use of spells/traps, or build its attack power to turn it into a beat stick like legendary fiend or mucus yolk.

I won against the cook once with a crappy toon deck. None of us was expecting that and we where around 5 persons in the lobby. My opponent said he had 3 weakness and what I had was one of them.
I like that the Blue-Eyes, Dark Magician, and Red-Eyes decks got some neat support where you get some powerful effects for using normal monsters which, of course, their namesakes are.
That wasn't technically Yugi's deck, but some other kid's deck. The duel computer he faced against actually had one of the most competently built decks in the entire series, and the kids deck relied on drawing a bunch of dragons to discard for the effect of Spirit Ryu.
So there used to be a magic that required you to have mystical shining ball on the field face up in attack for 1 turn. When I was like 12 years old(so 20 years ago), it allowed you to equip up to 4 three star vanilla monster with attack lower than 1600 to a card( that I can remember the name of it had 1200 att and 800 defence) and add them to that attack and defence of that card. This card becomes immune to magic, trap, and effects, aswell as being the target for all your opponents attacks until it's destroyed.
The first story duel of Legacy of the Duelist gave you this card so you could actually renact the feeling of Yugi and Kaibas first duel with a modicum of consistency. I was convinced the duel was impossible until I i drew the spell, then Kaiba got 3 blue-eyes on the field, I held out and was about to lose and finally got the fifth piece, the head piece. Whatever problems i had with that game, that duel was worth the full price of buying it.

Games like RuneScape and world of Warcraft saw success in a return to roots game mode/servers: would love to see a new era of card games doing the same with new subsets we can use to build decks and play yugioh like we did when we were younger.
There was an updated one I fought IRL. 1 of each Exodia piece, 3 heart of the underdog, 3 reloads, and full of normal pendulum monsters. Extra deck had bosses. Reload works during draw phase. It can win, difficulty, without Exodia, but will often draw into it. Wanna see how it works with links now!
here is an fun thing about heart of the underdog. if you play reload when drawing an non normal monster and the new hand contains an normal monster you can draw more as its still the draw phase
One Deck i really found funny, was stuffing my whole deck full of Normal-Pendulum Monsters as they also count as Normal Monsters +Exodia and HotU, so you can actually swarm the field and summon maybe some XYZ, its still a very nice thing but funny because you can get the heart of the Underdog strad of a good amound of the time if you manage to survive for 3 turns.
I still recall someone wanting to make this work at my locals a long time ago, it was just a weeny deck of 1 star normal monsters (but more thematic with moki moki and skull servants), used heart of the underdog for draw power, a card to let them summon multiples of them like tri-wight, law of the normal to clear the board, and triangle power to hit for game, it was about as inconsistent as it sounds. Also in case anything went south they had a small chaos package due to the light mokis and dark skull servants.
There's also a pendulum strat I tried to make work with normal monsters (spam the field, effect monster lockdown etc), sadly it's tough to make things like that viable. It wasn't qliphort, there was some non qliphort stuff involving normal monsters and pendulum.
You can also use quickplay spells such as reload to interupt HOTUs failed check during the draw phase to get a new check. At this point you choose which vanilla you wish to reveal if you drew 1. Also, If you use vanilla pendulums you can do a bit more than just exodia
I love using the normal monster Exodia deck strategy! Especially when using normal pendulum monsters as well so I can restock my field for defense or offense whenever needed! Its such a simple and easy strategy that I used almost completely throughout the Legacy of the Duelist videogame.
Back when I played Yu-Gi-Oh I had a deck that was all 1 star normal monsters, used Human-Wave Tactics, Gravity Bind, Law of the Normal, and Triangle Power. People hated it.
Beatdown decks used to be fairly powerful and usually included an insane number of normal monsters that were unreasonably powerful. Like lvl4s with 1800+ attack, level 5-6 with 2400+.
Hand Destruction being a quick-play spell helps Heart even more because if you draw that per turn you can still proc Heart during Draw Phase and keep the drawing going.
man i remember thinking up the heart of the underdog stall and dig deck when it came out and before i had reliable internet. i was so vindicated a few years later to find it on the wiki lmao.
My favorite use of Normal Monsters is Zushin the Sleeping Giant. "In ten turns, you shall suffer a fate worse then death. Until then, here's my widdle guys."
You mean, since 2001 or whenever LOBE came out? Because since then there's always been a meta. It's not like this game went years without direction, even back then it was obvious and simple what you needed to play and win, and that hasn't really changed since
I've always wished that the real world game was played like the early parts of the anime/manga. I don't mean in terms of nonsensical plays either. I mean with a sense of originality and creativity. Of course the moment real world prizes are involved, those things are completely thrown out the window. That being said, I understand the game wouldn't be as widely played or even still exist, if there wasn't a competitive scene. Especially with other card games out there.
"The game used to be about fun, not about meta!" That game you remember never existed, that was your schoolground rules where the only cards you had were a preconstructed deck and a random booster pack
I used to have a law of the normal exodia deck. It basically flooded the field with normal lv1 monsters, they were restocked if destroyed in the very next turn, they were constantly recycled from the graveyard, and constantly used to draw more cards or to destroy the opponent's stuff. I even imported a Dancing elf playset in Japanese just to make it even cooler It stopped being viable (like, at all) once pendulums appeared, but I loved it just for it's randomness, and the face of my opponent when I surprised him with exodia or the face he/she made when I absolutely blasted his life points with Law of the normal + Triangle power was just priceless.
Oh, it was still viable for a lot longer than people give it credit. You can use the draw mechanic to get your life points extremely high or create a busted Mula Muka. Or you can discard everything and use Blasting Of The Ruins to burn your opponent.
Funny thing is, Normal Pendulum monsters work with this too. Filled my deck with high and low scales with high attack, along with 3 heart of the underdog, and exodia, and poof, maximum 4 turn victory, considering that your starting hand or draw has heart of the underdog in it. Even without exodia, you have 5 giant beat sticks you can destroy your opponent with. Fu either way.
I have this in MD that I use with red and blue eyes Thunder Dragonduo to reclaim banished if opponent thinks that will save them (nope). I used it in some early rounds of YCS qualifiers- just to say I did. Have to look back at save and see who I beat😂 Draw engine and beat down with piercing the darkness and Dark Factoey. Classic!!

Add in exodius the ultimate forbidden lord and every normal monster in the graveyard gives 1000 atk with special summon conditions to recover all the monsters from the graveyard and you can almost guarantee 5 peices AND have a monster with 14000 atk on the field.
The really funny part about this strategy is that you can possibly have all three copies of Heart of the Underdog active at once, and that lets you draw three cards each time to potentially form a loop until you either win with Exodia or you don't get any Normals from your three draws.
I use neo aqua madour in my umi control deck. He has 3k defense so he is a wall to most boss monsters, and if you run a messenger of peace like I do he can attack your opponent and trigger the effect of sea stealth attack. Also you can summon him with fish sonar if you have umi on the field for free.

Its deffo a fun deck , just with friends but i used a normal, pyro mech deck and you draw loads and fusion into that flaming bird and the dragon that cant be destroyed by battle (cant remeber their names lol )very easily and very fun to use
Can use Solomon wishes with this deck along with sangan as well that way your gaining exodia parts and gaining life points each time heart of the underdog is in play. Also it allows you to gain a defense as well.
The best Strat is to fill it with normal Dragon monsters and one copy of Spirit Ryu, if you fail to get all the Exodia pieces you can FTK with Spirit Ryu’s non-OPT effect
There’s a trap card that can bring a normal monster back from the grave yard. Naturally I’d use any effect that would get blue eyes out of my hand into the grave yard.

Vanillas should have rule changes, to how the Versus Type System works in the manga and video games, and to not require tributes to be normal summoned. Would give them a huge buff!
These monsters however deserve some OP card specifically for a normal monster deck, it’s not common to pull off exodia but it is possible to make a card that will double or even triple your atk with the amount of vanilla cards on field or something
Although they’ve never been notably expensive, I can always count on there being excellent Darkrai cards every era. Crown zenith didn’t disappoint, and now I wait for SV to continue the legacy.
I have a deck that works like that but with a few other surprises that lets me defend myself while i get exodia but also to win with several other interesting tricks
Sunseed Genius loci, mystical shineball, gunkan suship shari, their are a couple decks wich work with normal Monster and they Do quit good (yes i know only loci was competetive)
I want a version of yugioh with only normal monsters. No effect monsters, no extra deck, no spells or traps, just monsters beating the hell out of each other
First time I played against a Deck with heart of the underdog I was like "this game gave Yugi grandpa a crappy deck all he's doing is drawing card's with high defense i have cards that can easily destroy them this is going to be a quick and easy win". When I saw that he drew an exodia piece I freaked out and understood why he had the deck set up.
Its fun if you get 3 hearts of the underdog on the field all at once because they all trigger each other, meaning you could hypothetically keep drawing so long as one of your yhree hearts of the underdog kept drawing a vanilla

The really funny part about this strategy is that you can possibly have all three copies of Heart of the Underdog active at once, and that lets you draw three cards each time to potentially form a loop until you either win with Exodia or you don't get any Normals from your three draws.
Been playing the game for years, I know both heart of the underdog and common charity, but only now realized it’s the same guy in both artworks
You haven't lived until you've lost to law of the normal ojamas
17:25 Ilia with a full camp vs Josh Emmet and Alex on antibiotics, 2 weeks of camp, torn toe ligments and fractured ribs vs Khalil Rountree aren't the same thing
In the vacuum what Ilia did thus year was better but with context Alex literally SAVED THE SPORT THE ENTIRE YEAR
I liked to run Normal Pendulums with Heart of the Underdog, was pretty fun.
i wish theyd make a couple more "game modes" on master deul. they have the festivals with different rules but i think they can do things like start with 3 cards second turn draws one card than draw 2 cards every turn. or cant have monsters level 6 and higher in the main deck. or can have only one of a card instead of 3.
Yeah the only normal monsters I used either have super high attack or defence, or, interact with specific magic/trap cards.
I remember my brother played this with igknights, this was before links so you could always have some defense with pendulum summoning
I’ve also come across a Heart of the Underdog Slifer deck that was pretty effective
I ran that exodia deck when masterduel had the 2008 Era event
I have this deck. It’s one of my only decks I have left. It runs a large amount of level 4 pendulum monsters and 6 quick spells
Lets not forget about Pot of Greed that let's you draw three additional cards to your hand! That's what it do
I wish Underdog had an archetype or more lore cards in it. I remember when I used that card as my main avatar on a lot of games. xD
The best Strat is to fill it with normal Dragon monsters and one copy of Spirit Ryu, if you fail to get all the Exodia pieces you can FTK with Spirit Ryu’s non-OPT effect
Spends entire turn drawing whole deck looking for exodia’s foot
There’s a trap card that can bring a normal monster back from the grave yard. Naturally I’d use any effect that would get blue eyes out of my hand into the grave yard.
I played this deck waaaaay back in the daybpn Dueling Notebook lmao. 3x Heart of the underdog, 5x Exodia Pieces, 32x normal monsters. I lost so many games lol
I used to have this deck but I left it at my friends house and I don’t know what happened to it after that haha still got my black wings light sworn and monarch deck tho!
Vanillas should have rule changes, to how the Versus Type System works in the manga and video games, and to not require tributes to be normal summoned. Would give them a huge buff!
Charcoal inpachi has literally saved my life multiple times in Yu-Gi-Oh
These monsters however deserve some OP card specifically for a normal monster deck, it’s not common to pull off exodia but it is possible to make a card that will double or even triple your atk with the amount of vanilla cards on field or something
This is exactly the deck idea I had running when blitzing through legacy of the duelist haha hahaha. I'd win so fast
Everyone underestimates skull servant until the 12k atk king of the skull servant hits the field
Well fuck me... I thought I was special for making a deck just like this without ever knowing it existed.
there's also prearranging the deck before a duel which is tied to your strategy
Amulet Of Ambition can go crazy too on a low level vanilla card
Its fun if you get 3 hearts of the underdog on the field all at once because they all trigger each other, meaning you could hypothetically keep drawing so long as one of your yhree hearts of the underdog kept drawing a vanilla
Unfortunately no, the card misses timing, so the last drawn card has to be a normal monster. Then you can draw up to 3 again.
Pot of Pog is something I never knew I needed in my life.
Legend says till this day yami yugi still drawing monster card
So if there's no essay written on the card, it's uselese 😂
I know my cards are probably horrible conditions now. But I still have my first edition deck with from when I was a kid still ready to go
You forgot to mention the goats of normal monsters the Ojamas
There's actually a lot of normal monster support especially when you think outside of the box.
