Amazing for the Wet on Wet Techniques, My Magic White recipe will give you that creamy, buttery feel of oils, and extend the drying, time, take out streaks, and blend colors beautifully with ease..
How to Make Magic White for Acrylic Paint for easy blending. using the wet on wet technique like Bob Ross..plus 4 10 minute paintings..
The formula I used is equal amounts of Slow Dry Blending Gel Medium, and Liquid Blending Gel, plus Acrylic White paint.
In the video I made the magic white 4 different ways,
1. with the liquid blending gel, Slow Dry Blending Gel and White paint
2. with liquid blending gel, and White
3. with Slow Dry Blending Gel medium and White
4. with Linseed oil and White but that didn't work out, Linseed oil is only used for Oil paintings!!
You can use any Slow drying Blending Gels, any Brand, and White, you should get the same results, you can experiment with the amount of each for mixing..
I put the links to my amazon shop incase you want to buy the ones I used..

The hardest part of Painting with Acrylic paint is short drying time and blending, now I have come up with a solution, just like Bob Ross we will make Magic White or Liquid White the wet on wet painting technique and to make painting with Acrylics easy, this will change the way you paint with Acrylics forever, you will now have the freedom to paint for up to an hour, and blend your colors, My Magic white recipe will give you that creamy, buttery feel of oils, and extend the drying, time, take out streaks, and blend colors beautifully with ease..for a beautiful
and amazing painting, you will also save on paint because you won't have to use as much...

Allison - you are a genius!
Like you, I have also been on a quest to make acrylic paint blend easier and better. I've spent a fortune on products but the multitude of brand name, made for purpose 'slow dry' mediums etc, when used on their own, just don't quite hit the spot (possibly my fault in the way I apply them).
Like a mad professor I made my own experimental mixes and medium, some with reasonable success and potential but need further testing.
I've spent a ridiculous amount of time messing around with all kinds of liquids, creating new potions (when I could have been painting for real), all the time excitedly longing for that Eureka moment! I really enjoy the process - sometimes more than making art, lol! When it comes to creative problem-solving across the board, I'm forever curious, always wondering 'What if..?'
Your discovery proves that asking 'what if' or 'how can I' and pushing the boundaries a bit further, is so worth it. You got your eureka moment with these results. Well done!
Now I'm off to try it out - after checking out your Magic Mist video!
Thank you very much for letting me know, I am very happy I can help new artists...Happy Painting!!
Darling, I like the first square, I am going to try that, tfs
That is great, let me know how you make out Geri, Happy Painting!!

I love your accent! And your Bob Ross doll! I'm actually watching him now and he used liquid white, so I searched liquid white for acrylics and found YOU
Bob Ross called magic white liquid white, because his teacher Bill Alexander invented the Magic white for oils, but no one has magic white or liquid white (same thing) for acrylics, so I made up my own...I hope my Magic white (Liquid White) helps you...

This is wonderful! I have a question. What if you are pulled away when you are half way done with your background and you can't get back to it for a few days. Can you add this liquid white over liquid white and continue painting?
Thank you Andrea, if you have to leave and your backround dries, if you mean part of the painting is done, once you put paint on the canvas over your liquid white and it dries , then use the liquid white without the white added to your recipe, just use a blending gel, or slow dry medium, or none at all just mist with water, if you add liquid white over dried paint it will cover up what you did, , just like putting white paint over dried paint...also if you only have your liquid white on before you started to paint and it dried, yes you can add liquid white again....I hope that helped..
Derwent makes a medium called open medium. Not confused with Goldens open.
It is for acrylic, and it makes acrylic open for many hours depending the quantity you mix into the paint.
Thank you for letting me know, I couldn't find it on Amazon or Google, do you have a link or information where you can get it?
@@allisonprior david Jansen sells it on his website
@allisonprior he also has a youtube channel where he paints with these special mediums, he has his own line of non toxic acrylic paint , called heritage.

@@allisonprior hi again Allison, as soon as lock down is over here in Ireland I’m off to the shop to get blending gel. I loved the easy way you communicated the information. By the way, some phrases and words sounded very Irish.
Hi there. I have used Glycerine in my watercolors when putting them in a halfpan to dry without cracking. Maybe glycerine would work with acrylics too? Just pure veg. glycerine. Anyway, I will try this for sure! Acrylics are very new to me, I am a newbie, and I often work too slow, it dries on me. Lovelovelove that you have given me a solution to try out. Tfs!! Hugs from Norway, Katla Dragon
Nice to hear from Norway, Yes Glycerine will work with Acrylics also, it will extend the drying time, I think you will love the Magic White...
@@allisonprior Thank you for answering me. Enjoy your weekend. 😄
Thank you so much. I was trying to find a acrylic liquid white recipe but all I could find was someone using one specific brand that you can't really get over here without it costing a lot
Glad I could help!
Could l use floating medium for blending gel? Can’t wait to try this
Floating Medium will dry faster then the blending gel, if you don't have blending gel use any medium that will extend the drying time of Acrylic Painting, such as, retarder slow dry medium, anything that stated slow dry, I hope this helps, you can go to my Amazon shop :amazon.com/shop/allisonprior
this did what i’ve been trying to do for a week now. thanks so much. i did the first one using what i had. which was floetrol, slo-drying gel, white and some water. but i realize that thicker is better. i think. 🤔
So Glad it helped!
Hey Allison, I'm going to get the blending gel tomorrow... Is that the one you liked the best? If not which do you prefer personally? I can only get the one. So I want the best. Lol I loved that you are so excited! 😊 it makes me excited too. I'm so happy I can paint this weekend. Last radiation treatment is tomorrow! No more driving 2 hours each trip. Although they were some of the most beautiful country drives I've ever seen. And I've traveled a lot. Thanks so much:)
I'm not sure which blending gel you are getting, is it the clear fluid gel or the slow drying get that is white, I love both, give it a try with the one you have try equal amounts, then try half the equal amount of get when you add it to the white, just to see how long the blending time is, also if it's the clear gel fluid it may be to runny without the other one, so you may need a smaller amount if it's fluid.. Experiment to see what works best, I'm still experimenting also , I have a 16 oz bottle of the gel clear fluid I found on Amazon it's almost %20.00 but it should go a long way,
I will try that and see if it works good, I also kept looking to see if I could find Magic White on line and I did finally find a Bob Ross Liquid White for Acrylics, I'm not sure what that is like, but it's much cheaper to to make your own, I think it's $13.00 plus shipping for 4 oz, I will check again..and That is US..The ones in Canda were $40.00,..I am glad your Treatments are over, and you able to spend more time painting... Have a great day, and if you have anymore questions let me know...
@@allisonprior awesome! Thank you for the information. I'm out now and will run by Hobby Lobby in a bit. I have no clue what they have but I'll look :)

@@allisonprior I found the slow-DRI Blending medium.. It looks white but not sure because the bottle itself is white. I will check it tomorrow. Thanks. I already had Matt medium, and the gesso.
Can a slow dry medium also be added with the slow dri blending gell to also extend drying time of acrylics
Thank you for asking Ken, Yes any slow dry medium can be added with slow dry blending gel to extend drying time of acrylics...
Hey Allison. I have liquitex slow-dri blending fluid medium. Will that work if I mix it with white?
Thank you for asking Akahatha, that would work....
@@allisonprior thanks so much!this is an amazing video !
We have to wait until it dry and start painting or we start just after we use the magic white ?
The magic white is used to keep your paint wet for blending, and to brighten up your colors, so paint while it is wet to blend the colors, if you don't want to blend don't use the magic white, or wait for it to dry when you are finished blending...
Could a big batch of this be made and put in a bottle to use when you get ready to paint or would it be best to make a fresh batch for each painting?
Thank you for asking Dixe84, I make a batch to have when I need it, just make sure you can seal it so it won't dry up over time..I use a bottle or container with a lid...
Hey Allison. Can slow dry blending fluid be a substitute for slow dry blending gel?
Thank you for asking, Any slow dry Blending fluid, medium, gel, will do but I found the slow dry blending gel worked the best... Experiment with the different slow dry blending mediums and see what works the best..and mix different amounts like I did in the video to get the one you like best...Happy Painting..!!
@@allisonprior thanks so much!
Can you mix the Magic paint ahead of time and store it? Also the Magic mist?
Thank you for asking Ann, Yes you can make Magic Paint ahead of time and store it, make sure it has a tight lid so air can't get at it, and the Magic Mist I just put in my spray bottle and leave it there and use it when I need too...no need to put a lid on it...Cheers!!
So when Bob Ross does the 3 different colors down his canvas on top of liquid black or say when he does the first coat in black, then the middle in blue etc, in acrylic, would we let that dry and then cover it in our homemade black gesso or black acrylic mixes with say, a matte medium? So will the colors still blend with the color under the black wet gesso or wet acrylic? Do you get what I mean?
Hi Sharon, if you want the colors to blend and the paint to stay wet, you would just put on the Magic Black, and add the blue, red, green, purple, any dark colors if you add white it will turn grey, the black will darken the colors more, if you add mixes like matte medium or black acrylic it will dry faster..Magic white or Magic Black is to keep your paint wet longer for blending the colors...I hope that helps..if you have anymore questions please let me know..
How about if I don't want to finish my painting today and I want to continue it the next day? Do I just apply this liquid white again?
Thank you for asking Theresa, Yes the next liquid white will be dry, it will stay wet for about 1 hour.. I hope that helps..
I have been using soft body paint (student paint) and retarder to make my canvas slick it works very nicely when I want to work wet on wet for my skies, I sometimes do the whole canvas if I am putting water into my painting. I learnt this from Ianapolis who uses it on every painting he does!
Great tip! Thank you for sharing, I find if the canvas is big some of the retarder will be dry by the time you get to work on that part, so I put magic white on the top part first, and then when I go to work on the bottom I will put the magic white on then....if I work on a part that I don't want to stay wet I will leave the magic white out....and just use a damp brush...Happy Painting!!
hi alison can these methods be used on watercolor paper or are they just for canvases
Hi Steven, did you try it on you watercolor paper, it may not take as well because the paper may absorb the paint, maybe if you gesso it first it will work better, try it and see what happens, I haven't tried it on all the supports yet only the canvas...
@@allisonprior thanks for the reply alison i will try it and let you know the results good or bad
i am a beginner 73 yr old trying painting, i did not know how to make my sky blend with the blue, now i know i need to add blending gel slow drying with my white paint, then use my blue and paint and blend, thank you for this tip, boy painting is not easy, so many brushes, i find drawing a pine tree very difficult. any tips on the brushes to use, my fan brush is not working for me.

Will this technique still retain the drawing in pencil preparation underneath
Yes it will if you water it down a little...
What happens if you sketch your paintings out prior tp painting ?
If you sketch out your paintings before painting, you can use the blending gels clear and leave out the white, that way you will be able to see your sketch and still have have a long blending time... I hope that helps..
Do you still need to add slow dry mediums to your colors as well?
Thank you for asking, no you don't have to add slow dry mediums to you colors as well, you can do one or the other, add the slow dry mediums to you paints, or add the slow dray mediums to make magic white and just use that, when you put that on your canvas and then add the paints that will make the paints stay wet longer, and you will be able to blend your colors much easier, your canvas will be slick so the paint moves easy for a smooth finish. I hope I answered you question..
@@allisonprior thank you, I am new to painting and need all the help I can find
Would you be able to use these mixes to make a liquid black too?

I’m using acrylic paint, so I use a medium that extends the drying time of the paint and to help the paint blend smoothy, I use half all half. I hope that helps.
@@allisonprior thanks yes so half and half for all methods?
@@samward97 yes I find that works best for me, but you should experiment, I also put that mixture in about 1/3 of a spray bottle with the rest of the bottle with water shake it up then you can mist your canvas to keep the paint wet longer, and to blend easier, it won’t stay wet as long as the recipe in the video.

@@Lorielle1111 You could give it a try, I never tried it, but I'm thinking it may wash off or wear off faster, the canvas has a rough surface and you use this to make it smoother...
Do you have to add a retarder or anything to the paint on your palette and do you rinse you brush in water as you paint
Thank you for asking, I have a recipe for Magic Paint to turn your paint into a slow drying paint and enhance your colors, here is the link: ruclips.net/video/cqySthUMnC8/видео.html I always rinse and clean my brush in water or change brushes when I go from the dark colors to light colors and the other way around...I hope that helps..
Which do you prefer
I use the Magic white for large blending areas on a large canvas so I can work for about 1 hour , I use the mist to keep the paint wet for about 10 minutes, so it would be smaller areas, and the areas I don’t mind drying faster because I may want to dry brush or layer over a dry area, hope that makes sense.
Bob Ross Liquid Acrylic White is on Amazon. Expensive.
Yes I seen it after I did this video, so I added to my shop, I didn't see it until I did this video, but I still would have made this video so you can make your own and make it go further and cheaper, I never tried the Bob Ross one, but it would be worth checking out...here is the link : amzn.to/38BWDtr it's $21.99 for 118mi
Can you help? i have questions. Do you have an email? What odorless thinner do you use for acrylic? What do you use to clean your brushes?
allisonprior@yahoo.com you don’t use thinner for acrylics only water or a medium that helps your paint stay wet longer like blending gel, I just use soap and water to clean my brushes, I hope that helps..
Ok soap and water to clean great ty and what do you use to thin the paint? Cause he always says to use thinner to thin the paint?
Omg :/ I didnt read the description and the one I bought is lindseed oil becaude it was the easiest for me to get :/ I was about to try it and just now read that , it didnt work :/
Linseed oil is to use with oil paints,, so if you do oil painting it wasn't waste, I did try linseed oil just to see how it would react but it din't work out, acrylic paint and oil don't like each other, it's like putting oil into a glass of water, the oil will sit on top...Keep the lindseed oil it will come in handy if you want to try oil painting, it will last for years..
You keep referring to Bob Ross- as the inventor of this system. Do some research and you will find that that Bob Ross was taught this system by a fellow from Germany many years ago. Ho was Bobs mentor and showed him everything he knew including the words (happy little clouds) etc. I won’t mention his name but first name is William ---. Look it up, you will be surprised. But- maybe you already know this. You certainly have hit upon something with the liquid white for acrylics.
Thank you for your comment Jim, Bill Alexander was Bob Ross's Teacher, I do mention that from time to time but everybody knows the Bob Ross name more, I did mention in my some of my descriptions and on my blog that Bill Alexander was the inventor of Magic White and Bob Ross made his and called it liquid white, I have watched documentaries, have all their books, and watch all their video's, Both their video's and Books got me interested in painting, I also did a lot of research and love Bob Ross, and Bill Alexander, My Liquid white or magic white is amazing to use with Acrylics, I think they may have used Linseed oil and White for oil paintings ...So glad you brought this up, Happy Painting!!
What is it FOR? Bob Ross mentions his magic white often but, I never ever get it purpose
Thank you for asking Bob, Bob Ross used the Magic White for his canvas to make it slick and slippery when he applied his oil paint,, plus it lightened the colors, he called his Liquid White, Bill Alexander his teacher came up with the Magic White, there is no magic white for Acrylics so I made my own to make the canvas slick and slippery for Acrylics and to extend the drying time so you can work longer because Acrylics dry fast, and it also make th colors brighter, and great for blending colors, I hope that answered your question..
@@allisonprior Thanks. I think this is where the confusion sets in. I would have thought paint on wet paint would be a sloppy mess lol
It could be a mess if you do it wrong, but it's easy once you get the hang of it..just don't blend black into the light colors...that is a mess.. lol
Mixing linseed oil with acrylic is a bad idea. Water based paint will be repelled by the oil.
Yes that is true, that's why I said not to do it, glad you brought that up Roger..
How to make magic white by buying blending white gel and mixing it with white paint. Brilliant. Next: how to make slice bread by buying sliced bread.
Well the mixture is Blending gel clear, and then you can add white paint, it's brilliant because you can only get Magic white for oil painting, this is for Acrylic paint, so thank you for you nice comment.
it's an idea she came up with that she's now sharing with everyone in the hopes that it helps them in their paintings. the idea that keeps acrylic paints wet longer allowing the paint to blend better is an excellent suggestion. so comparing this to sliced bread is superbly ignorant.
BTW, this is exactly what i was looking for. tks so much!! 😁😎
It would be a better test if you used the same colour paint on all four squares. Using 4 different colours offers no objective comparison.
Thank you Damien for that tip...
