I literally just finished installing the Sport Utility kit. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined and have half a brain, you can do this. I'm a DIY mechanic and did this in about an hour and a half by myself with no clutch press. The video is a great instruction tool. The kit made a big difference especially in low gear. Pulled the front tires off the ground. Lots of low end torque. Just what I wanted. 👍🏼
This is a very good and easy to follow instructional , for someone with no prior mechanical experience on ATVs’s you have made it possible for me to do my own repairs. Thanks and keep up the great videos.
Hi Jason, The Sport Utility Kit for 27-28" Tires is the kit you want to use. Part Number WE425007 (for 0-3000 ft elevation). The kit will give you more bottom end and mid range, basically makes up for the power loss of the bigger tires. Top end speed will stay real close to what you have now but will get up to it faster with faster backshift and throttle response. It will also grip the belt better.
I have been on the phone with Kellie from EPI and just installed this kit and smoked the belt at 6.5 miles she has talked to techs for me and never once mentioned this video lol thanks for posting this it was the help I needed I did'nt preload the spring now I have to buy buttons and sand some blemishes out but should be good.Yay I love buying new belts!
'14 Polaris 570 eps with non engine break follows identical steps as this video. The clutch cover breather hoses are attached differently making it even easier to remove and install but other then that everything else virtually identical. '14 Polaris Sportsman 570, 27x9x14, 27x11x14 tires EPI Sport Utility Clutch Kit - 27-28" Tires - WE437184 using Primary Spring Green and separate from kit Secondary Clutch Spring - Orange - PDS-2 (PDS2)
Great video guys. Nice to see an actual technician giving directions. I will be purchasing a 2016 1000xp sportsman soon, what would you recommended for a clutch kit (0-3000). The stock tires are 26". I may go with a little more aggressive tread 27" tire at the most, later on. All terrain tire or at the most mud lites. NOT a pure mud tire. No other mods.
Thanks Scott. For you machine we would recommend two different kits, it will depend on how long you switch to bigger tires. For the stock size tires we would have you use the Sport Utility stock tire kit part number WE437280. For the 27-28" tires you would want to use part number WE437282. Both kits have the same amount of parts and price but they use different weights. If you call us we can give you more details on things you can do also. 218-829-6036.
It really depends on what tires you have on the machine if you will see a decrease in MPH for the kit you would need to get a good improvement. Usually with stock tires and up to 28'' you won't see a decrease but with tires bigger than that you would see a decrease in MPH to get good performance gains with that big of tire.
excellent video!! I would love to see something involving the ebs system. I have been having trouble finding any solid videos such as this one that includes the ebs. thanks again keep up the good vids!
Yes, the bigger and/or heavier the tires you have the more important adding a clutch is. We have several kits for the bigger tires depending on how big and what type of riding your doing. Call us 218-829-6036 and we can help you out. Thanks!
thank you SOOOO MUCH for doing this video, I need to do this to my quad after ordering all the parts.. lol you make it look easy but that's because you know what your doing.but it really helped me understand with the way you explained it. thanks again and happy new year!!
Great video! Learned a ton in 15 mins! Was just wondering if there was much difference on the bikes with engine braking? My dad's 01 the primary exploded but looks pretty similar from the pieces.
Thanks! The primary clutch would be the same between the different years, the secondary clutch is a little different. On the engine braking clutches you don't have to preload the secondary spring. You just compress the spring and install the snap ring so its easier to install the spring and helix. I hope that helps, let us know if you have any other questions.
I assume you are talking about holes for the spring to go into the clutch. If you don't have them you have a different style secondary clutch than this model.
Just done this to a 450 sportmans. Low made a crazy good difference but high gear on the bottom end seems a bit boggy a little worse than what it was. After it takes off it seems good. Any explanation? Extremely happy with low gear for sure
i would double check to make sure the secondary spring is preloaded properly. IT should be better in low and high. IF the spring isnt set correct it will be noticed more in high range.
Mine is a 2012 500HO Limited Edition exactly like this one. I use mine for trail riding most of the time but I also plow snow. Here in eastern Newfoundland the snow is usually wet and heavy. I use low range and it's got the power but still worry about the belt. This is my first automatic ATV. I'm running the stock 25" tires but might get 26" when it's time to replace them. What's your recommendation?
Would it make the top end speed slower and would this help a lot in torque in high cuz that's wat I need it for that and mud cuz I have my freind ride with me and it has trouble starting to go in high but once it gets going its drives fine
Thanks Ryan! Yes anytime you can check the alignment is a good thing. Unlike snowmobiles a lot of machines you cant adjust the alignment depending on the models and styles of clutches. Some models you can and its always good to check anytime you have the clutches off.
EPIperformance the alignment on my 2000 sportsman 500 has a slotted front engine mount. Alignment of clutch’s, center to center, and clutch offset checking is important at intervals. I have blown several belts having to be rescued. Is their a way to make this machine touring oriented???
@@ryankorn5911 Any belt drive system will build a lot of heat if your running high speeds and the longer you run the hotter they will get will will lead to belt failure. The Sport Utility Stock Tire kit would be the better for higher speed running. The best thing you can do if you are doing long high speed runs is to vary the speed and rpms up and down some to give the belt and clutches a little break.
It is a little tricky to understand until you have the clutches in front of you. If you cant figure it out from the video you might want to get a service manual for your machine.
I have a 2013 sportsman 500 ho with 28" mega mayhems on it..which have inch and a half lugs. I want more low end for sure, but I don't want to loose much top end speed.. im debating between the sport utility and the mudder kits.. what are your thoughts?
Either kit would work. If you are doing more mid range to top speed all around riding I would go with the Sport Utility kit. If you are doing a lot of mudding and want the best low end power then go with the mudder. Either kit will be a big improvement over the stock clutching.
Does this video apply to the newer model sportsman’s as well? And is the mudder clutches similar to install? I have a Polaris sportsman 450 on 29.5 outlaws 2s and looking to get a kit, but cannot find any installation videos other than this one.
Yes this is the same process on all the 450 Sportsmans and 570 Sportsmans (that dont have EBS). The Mudder kit is the same installation as all of our kits, just a different combination of springs and weights.
So which spring determines the engagement? I bought a 700 with an epi clutch in it and the engagement is about 2300 rpm which is too high for my liking. Maybe because I have stock tires but still kinda high for me. It's almost wide open going around the yard in low gear
The primary spring will determine the engagement. If you tell us what color spring you have or the exact kit you have we can help you find a lower engagement.
Hey is it normal for it to hesitate before it moves with that green spring? Input my Epi Clutch kit on today talked to Mike at epi he said the green was performance in the primary! I don’t like how it hesitating before it gets up to the Rpms to move
Depending on the exact model and year and which green spring it is they can and normally raise the engagement a little higher then stock. It will come down a little once you heat cycle the spring from riding for about 20 minutes. Then it should stay consitantly there. Again depending on the spring and model they might be a lower engagement spring available, but I would suggest riding it a little and see how you like then. The higher engagement will give you more low end power and once your moving faster backshift and throttle response.
+greensammy87 On the RZR we delete the EBS (engine breaking) if the machine has it. Most RZR have little or no EBS. Hope that helps let us know if you have any other questions.
Its just easier to pull the one bolt out and bring it up to the bench. It would be too difficult and more time consuming trying to do it while it is still attached
I noticed your clutches are marked in red on certain spots on the drive and driven clutch. Just wondering about when i install the drive and driven clutches onto my 2010 sportsman 550 x2 do they have to be put back on in any particular way??, **kind of like cam gears if not timed properly it wont even work.
No they don't have to line up with any timing marks or have to be in any specific position. Just slide them on the shafts and tighten the bolts and you are good to go.
We have a clutch kit for your machine that will give you better all around performance that would change the springs, weights and helix. But if your clutch is worn out you might need a clutch rebuild kit to get your clutch in proper working order first. Or you might need to replace the clutches. I would inspect your clutches and then call our tech line 218-829-6036 and they can help you determine what you might need to get up and running again.
Hi. I have a 2012 400 HO. I have put 30" Moto Monster Tires on this machine. A friend suggested me getting a clutch kit to pull them. I have searched for a clutch kit for this machine. I can't find one. Does EPI make a kit to fit cluches Primary 1322682 Secondary 1323015? Any help would be great.
They do just go to the page then products then clutch kits then Polaris then 400 then sportsman then the only clutch kit their the sport utility and get the top on for 27-28 should be fine
+Jason Marx You will get a new helix, secondary spring, primary spring, and a set of weights in that kit. You would want to buy a new set of buttons to go with the kit. Hope that helps. Thanks
I need help with my front dif. On a 05 500 ho Polaris it won't shift out of 4x4 but it indected it did on the display but I still turns the front tires when the switch is on off any idea the wires look good and so does the switch so I haven't a clue why it would do that any advice? And also what springs should I go with for more power on take off in my clutches
Not sure on the 4 wheel drive end of it. On the older machines it would do that if the oil in the hub was low or really dirty and if you took it apart and cleaned it it would work again. But on the newer ones not sure. Springs will vary depending on your tire size that you are using and the type of riding you are doing. If you tell us that we can help you better.
chuck chuck If you talking about the three little bearings that the weights rotate on you will need to completely break down the clutch. These are called Rollers. Its takes a holding fixture and a spider tool. Here is a link of how to rebuild the primary clutch. ruclips.net/video/N-4BiRHFYTw/видео.html
If your running a 26" tire that is a lighter tire and made for all around trail tire use the stock tire kit. If its a heavier mud type tire then we would have you use the 27-28" tire even though your are 26".
@@EPIperformancethanks, what happens if i get the 28 tire kit but decide to keep factory tires on will it make bike faster? Slower? Act like a direct drive with no slip?
@@chevy19699 if you run the 28" with stock tires you will run about 200 rpms higher then normal and will lose a little top and speed and acceleration. The best performance will be getting the right kit for the tire size.
question...my 05 700 ..when i put into gear it starts the bike starts to move..and i can shift to any other gear..i have to turn the bike off and then shift....idle is bout 800 right now..
chances are your bearing is going bad and locking up on your primary clutch. Remove your belt and try to spin the bearing on the primary clutch, if it doesn't move one way freely then your bearing is bad and needs to be replaced. When the bearing sticks it will want to spin the belt and make it hard to shift unless you shut off machine. If bearing seems good clean and inspect clutches and then try it again.
The primary clutch is tapered but can only go on so far, so as long as you torqued it properly is shouldn't change. On some models there are washers either behind the secondary clutch and some behind the bolt the holds the clutch on, if any of these are missing if could change your alignment. If your clutch and belts are turning at idle also double check your bearing in the center of the primary clutch.
Ok, dummy me, i had the secondary clutch on backards, somebody must have spent many sleepless nights, figuring out where to put the worlds hardest starter, ive replaced many in my life, but this is the worst
I took my 04 700 sportsman efi and changed it to an 800 crank pistons and cam also changed go 12:1 compression and .20 over sized pistons with 26in tire what clutch would you suggest for me not a bogger just want more torque and take off
I would start with the 700 kit for your machine. in most cases it should work no problem. The one thing you might run into is the rpms being a little to high and then you would have to go a little heavier weight. But you wont really know for sure until you run it.
@@EPIperformance I'm going to have to replace the entire clutch wanted to put the kit in prior to even installing it but my old one has crack along the faces where the belt rides any idea why it's doing that ?
@@EPIperformance it definitely slips alot sense new up grades I can see it causing heat thank you very much for your help and video would you suggest a cutxh kit by part number maybe all I see are those for monster tires and mudding
My 07 450 with 26s goes up to redline before the clutch starts to move and didn't use to do this. Would a clutch kit fix this issue? Or is this a possible secondary clutch issue?
Typically if its going that high before you start moving that means there is an issue with your primary clutch and belt. Something in the clutch must be binding or stuck, or the spider has loosened up and started unthreading itself. I would pull the cover off and start inspecting real good. Then go from there.
+EPIperformance I start off fine it's when the clutch is suppose to start working around 15 mph it can go up to redline unless there is no load like going downhill then it works fine.
After watching more of your videos I think the clutch cover is binding on the spindle and with high enough rpm it finally lets go and drops the rpm. So I may need a whole new primary clutch. It only has 800 miles on it.
To get the best overall performance you want to set your machine up for the elevation you are normally riding in. If you are bouncing around between different elevations then you are best off to call us and we can figure out what set works best for you.
By putting on this clutch kit, do you gain top end or lose top end or do you gain bottom end or lose bottom end? I am thinking about putting this clutch kit on my 2002 Polaris Magnum 500 4x4. Please let me know and give me advice to make my bike have more bottom end. I also have 26-10-12 in front and 26-12-12 tires in the rear.
+Ryan97Braz Our kits will give you more bottom end and midrange power and acceleration to get to your top speed faster. For stock tires kits the top end speed should stay the same, for over size tires and the mudder kits you might lose a little top end speed depending on tire size. Wit your 26" tires if they are a lighter trail tire we would have you use the stock tire kit. If they are a heavier more aggressive mud tire then we would have you use the 27-28" kit. You will also get faster backshift and throttle response ans grip the belt better then stock. I hope that helps. Thanks
My tires are ITP Mudlights 26", what one do you recommend? I would want my quad to have more bottom end. Mudders kit or stock tire kit? would the mudders kit make my quad have more bottom end than the stock tire kit?
+Ryan97Braz You wouldn't want the mudder kit for that light of tire. Normally with the miud lights we would have you use the Sport Utility Stock Tire kit. If you didn't mind losing a little top end you could run the Sport Utility Kit for 27-28" tires. With those tires you might lose 5-10mph off the top but get more bottome end power and torque.
We do stock some clutches for the bigger machines that burn up clutches a little more often and if you buy the clutches from us we install the kit into them. Unfortunately we do not carry replacement clutches for the 500's.
It depends on your application. Stock Polaris ATV clutches are getting maxed out around 100hp. The new Polaris sxs are are around 150. Snowmobiles are 200.
We don't build or sell any of the clutch systems. We just take the clutches that are stock on the machine and tune them better for the type of use you are looking for. STM in Michigan builds billet clutches that they sell for you.
in most cases no. Polaris has hundreds of different part numbers for clutches because they are model specific. Some have engine braking some dont, the offest for belt alignment is different and some even are set up to turn the opposite direction and they also can use different size belts. Best off getting the correct one for your machine
Primary clutch would be the same. The secondary clutch would be the same on all the non EBS clutches. Polaris uses two different clutch styles depending on if it has EBS or not. If you have EBS the kit install is easier because you don't have to wind up the spring, you just compress the spring straight into the clutch and install the helix. Hope that helps.
it should spin one way and lock up the other way if your machine has EBS (Engine braking). Sometimes the little black fiber washer that goes between the bearing the fixed sheave of the clutch will break or wear out and allow the bearing to get spun around but the clutch. Its hard to see but you can look for that or to see if it is missing, from there you will have to inspect the clutch and all the bushing for any extreme wear to where the clutch wont fully open/close.

They do just go to the page then products then clutch kits then Polaris then 400 then sportsman then the only clutch kit their the sport utility and get the top on for 27-28 should be fine
what's all included in kit. my spring broke in secondary clutch n wiped out buttons n grooved the helix on 2012 sportsman 500 ho
+Jason Marx You will get a new helix, secondary spring, primary spring, and a set of weights in that kit. You would want to buy a new set of buttons to go with the kit. Hope that helps. Thanks
where is your impact my dude?
Does epi make a clutch kit for the 2013 sportsman 400ho?
do y'all have any clutch kits for a 99 polaris sportsman 500 if so can i get a link
epiperformance.com/polaris-16/ Here is a link for the Polaris clutch kits. Let us know if you have any other questions.
Hey just recently took out primary clutch on 95 Polaris 500 sportsman and those little bearings fell out..how Dow I put them back in?
chuck chuck If you talking about the three little bearings that the weights rotate on you will need to completely break down the clutch. These are called Rollers. Its takes a holding fixture and a spider tool. Here is a link of how to rebuild the primary clutch. ruclips.net/video/N-4BiRHFYTw/видео.html
Hey..EPI thanks for the help..I got it put back together thanks to ur help..it runs great and thanks again
A precisar saber a medida do parafuso saca embraiagem

Thank you, very helpful👍🏼
thanks! glad we could help
@@EPIperformance what is the torque on the primary clutch ?
@@luissandoval6237 47-50 ft/lbs
@@EPIperformance thanks
What would be the best performance clutch kit you offer for 2014 Polaris sportsman 570 that will be running a 26 tall tire?
@@EPIperformance thank you very much
what factory specs my manual dosent say shit its for big boss 6x6 2014
question...my 05 700 ..when i put into gear it starts the bike starts to move..and i can shift to any other gear..i have to turn the bike off and then shift....idle is bout 800 right now..
chances are your bearing is going bad and locking up on your primary clutch.
I put it back together and the pulleys are misaligned , what to do 😢 is th clutch shaft tapered ?
The primary clutch is tapered but can only go on so far, so as long as you torqued it properly is shouldn't change. On some models there are washers either behind the secondary clutch and some behind the bolt the holds the clutch on, if any of these are missing if could change your alignment. If your clutch and belts are turning at idle also double check your bearing in the center of the primary clutch.
Ok, dummy me, i had the secondary clutch on backards, somebody must have spent many sleepless nights, figuring out where to put the worlds hardest starter, ive replaced many in my life, but this is the worst
@@jandeband Lol. Glad you got if fixed. Now you can go ride and get rid of the stress from working on it.
You can order a clutch puller directly from us. See our video description for the website address.
why do people constantly reuse single use lock nuts.
Is the washer under the snap ring necessary?
Its recommended to use the washer, but you don't have to. Unless it wont fit under the snap ring we would always install the washer.
yes
where u get the install tool for secondary clutch
We sell them at EPI. you can find it at www.epipperformance.com and search CCT100. We call it a clutch press.
Great detailed video ..
Thank you!
Usually either to much heat from use or slippage or normal wear and tear after a while will cause stress cracks in the clutch faces.
@@EPIperformance it definitely slips alot sense new up grades I can see it causing heat thank you very much for your help and video would you suggest a cutxh kit by part number maybe all I see are those for monster tires and mudding
What size tires are you running, what type of riding are you doing and what elevation are you riding at.
does it matter if your bike is ebs or not
very good mechanic!
+EPIperformance thank you so much for the reply. I believe it started after I ran out of fuel and had to be towed 10+ miles.
Wo bekommt man so einen Abzieher?
Yes it will work for that machine.
How much does this help
is it super critical to get the elevation correct?
With those tires you might lose 5-10mph off the top but get more bottome end power and torque.
for torque on clutchs any thing i can find says 40 for primary and 17 for secondary
Should be 47-50 on the primary and 17 for the secondary bolts.
Can u buy the clutch already done like this??
We do stock some clutches for the bigger machines that burn up clutches a little more often and if you buy the clutches from us we install the kit into them. Unfortunately we do not carry replacement clutches for the 500's.
how much hp can the clutch and belt set handle? can it handle 160hp?
It depends on your application. Stock Polaris ATV clutches are getting maxed out around 100hp. The new Polaris sxs are are around 150. Snowmobiles are 200.
+EPIperformance do you sell the 200 hp version.
We don't build or sell any of the clutch systems. We just take the clutches that are stock on the machine and tune them better for the type of use you are looking for. STM in Michigan builds billet clutches that they sell for you.
+EPIperformance thank for the advise
Can u install a sportsman clutch on a ranger?
in most cases no. Polaris has hundreds of different part numbers for clutches because they are model specific. Some have engine braking some dont, the offest for belt alignment is different and some even are set up to turn the opposite direction and they also can use different size belts. Best off getting the correct one for your machine
Is the the same on the sportsman 570?
Primary clutch would be the same. The secondary clutch would be the same on all the non EBS clutches. Polaris uses two different clutch styles depending on if it has EBS or not. If you have EBS the kit install is easier because you don't have to wind up the spring, you just compress the spring straight into the clutch and install the helix. Hope that helps.
very helpful
thank you!
thank you very much
it spins one way..but not the other way..is tht bad
it should spin one way and lock up the other way if your machine has EBS (Engine braking).
Ok thnkx
Faint thank you very well explained
Thanks!
Thanks.
a selling point for me is before and after comparison
No, it will be the same.
