Hi Mike. I got to give you a high five for your persistence and enthusiasm to capture each Great Lake boat that enters the Duluth harbor. I also enjoy your color analysis of what makes that each boat unique. I'm looking forward to your reporting of the Amercian Spirit when she starts her season shortly. On a side note. I had to travel to Detroit via Toledo a couple a days ago. I saw the Gott's sister ship the Edgar Speer parked at her winter mooring. I was about 1 mile from the boat but the tremendous size of the vessel took my breath away as I drove by the Maumee River Harbor. Also, I see both the Speer and the Clarke AIS are up and running. I assume there are some tugs to assist the actual docking? That would be great to see. I'm an ex USS Enterprise nuc reactor operator , so I always enjoy seeing big 'boats'. Gonna have to look up the Edwin H. Gott to see if there is any info on the engine rooms and propulsion. I would think these days they have thrusters as well ... so perhaps don't require as much help from tugs.
Wow! Thank you for your service! It means a lot to me and many others. It’s people like you that served our country that allows me to make videos like this. I was born and raised in Shell Lake, Wisconsin and visited Duluth often. I am always in awe of these massive ships and love to catch the live feeds when I can. Oh, I have so much to say on this one! Buckle in! First off, I was so confused by you saying this was a rare sighting because I was thinking, "We've seen this ship before..." Then I realized that I recognized it because it's the ship we watched go through the Soo Locks 8 years ago! How crazy is that?!? And I went back to look at my pictures to make sure I wasn't dreaming things (that's a long time for me to remember a detail like that) and realized that the other ship we saw there was the Mesabi Miner. Life is funny sometimes! Secondly, the weather in Duluth today. Wow. There is no walkway, it's ALL lake. There are waves on the walkway. And I just saw ice chunks floating down the walkway. 🤦♀ Also, for some reason the green gate is open. We think it happened in the last half hour. Of all the times, I'm not sure this is when that should be. It was closed earlier. I'm not sure if somebody opened it or if it blew open or something. And that may be how the ice chunks got on the walkway...maybe they came from the remaining bit near the lighthouse. We rewound the video and a big wave knocked it open about 20 minutes ago! I can't believe I noticed it. Another signal from....whoever?!? Anyway, I'm pretty sure they don't want it open but I'm also pretty sure nobody can get to it right now unless they are a strong swimmer. More snow chunks coming from behind the gate now. We're also seeing a lot of people find out the hard way that the waves are coming over the 2nd wall, too. Lots of jumping and running when they get hit by a wave that makes it to the upper level. It's an entertaining time to watch, that's for sure.
That green gate breaking open is going to be a big story. I rewound as well and saw it open up. I was expecting an even larger wave but I guess it must’ve been just repeated banging from waves? I have to get to the Soo Locks someday, Jodi I’ve never been there. I thoroughly enjoyed everything you wrote. So awesome! I hope this weather means there will be a big group of ships coming in all weekend. It’ll make for some good videos.⛴️⛴️⛴️
Now that is legit! Being able to touch her at the Soo Locks! Is that equivalent for Boat Nerds like us to a baseball fan being able to catch a home run at a baseball game? Although it may sound strange referring to a ship as ‘she’, this tradition relates to the idea of a female figure such as a mother or goddess guiding and protecting a ship and crew.

I've seen some big ships on Puget Sound, but not that big. It's design seems unique to its mission, hauling iron ore and coal. We don't have those kind of industries, so we've got different kinds of ships. Mostly cargo ships, and most of them from East Asia. Of course running through my mind while watching was "With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more / Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty."
Lucha! I hope all is well my friend. When I think Puget Sound, it immediately makes me think of my times in Seattle. One of my favorite spots is the West Point Light (provided a link below for you and others to check out). I was at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond a few years back, and that area is nice as well. Traffic was pretty crazy, that surprised me. It’s really nice area out there if a person likes the outdoors. Thank you so much for the comment. I hope you come back for more ship videos and more comments. It’s always fun talking to nice people like you. West Point Light: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Point_Light
Maybe it's just the camera angle, but there doesn't look like there's much room between the antenna on the top of the Gott and the bottom of the bridge!
You know, you pose a great question here. I guess I never really looked into the old versus the new with the water resistance. I know nothing when it comes to these big ships but isnt it common in a harbor for a ship this size to be guided around by a tug boat and/or a harbor master?
Great question! First of all, thank you for watching my friend. You are correct, many of the large vessels need help from the tugboats. It’s just too difficult to move around in certain situations as you see a lot of assistance from those tugs during the winter time in the ice. I hope you come with me on some of these ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Nigel! Big wave to you in Scotland friend! The bows are shaped like that because the ship is initially built to fit into the locks so there’s a more squared off shape. This allows for maximum cargo capacity if they build a ship that fits perfectly to a rectangular shaped lock. I hope you come with me on some of these ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships! 🏴🏴🏴👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Is it the captain driving this ship, or do they have pilots in Duluth harbor? Most larger ocean going ships have pilots navigating into and out of ports in ocean ports. The ports and harbors are far too complex with shallow areas, tides, and other underwater stuff for a captain to navigate. In Rotterdam, Holland the huge ships have to wait for high tide. Because some have a draft of over 75 feet. Bulk ocean going carriers are about 1,200 ft long, 210 ft wide at over 30,000 hp and able to carry over 360,000 tons with a propeller about 30 diameter. These ocean going ships move huge amounts of iron ore from Brazil, Europe and from Western Australia to Chins and India.
All of the regular Great Lakes ships have their own captain driving. The oceangoing ships usually have a relief pilot. It’s a hard task steering these ships.
I don’t know for sure. I’m guessing not because in the summer I’ve seen people with their personal boats gunning it through the canal. Good question man! I’m not 100% sure of the answer.
So, Mike. My group, game, and account was targeted by a hacker or a person who didn't have anything better to do and it caused all my work to be taken down and got my account deleted. So, please hold off from creating an account until I hopefully get this resolved.
Mark, I have always wondered what it was like to work there. I’ve driven by it so many times on 35 and the big pile of ore is cool. I have a lot of respect for you and your colleagues that work outside in the brutal winter to load those ships. What was it like there?
Nmflyer! I’m happy that you were able to watch the video. I hope you come with me on some of these ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Debbie, the captain passed on the whistle/horn in this video. There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.
Hey Scott, it all depends on each captain. Some captains will do it anytime they come in. Others, not the same. I hope you come come back to my channel and watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Absolutely, this vessel rarely comes into Duluth and was supposed to be loading in Two Harbors. The captain came out of nowhere on the radio and said he’s coming in. Thank you for watching the video Richard. I really appreciate you man. All the best.
These captains have to know each port. The cargo and vessel are far too valuable to risk going aground or hull damage in a port area. These captains may go into and out of Duluth port many times each sailing season.
Hey John, good eye brother. You are right. The shape of the ship is dictated by the shape of the shipping locks. They wanted to increase cargo capacity so they made the shape of the ship exactly the size of the shipping lock so it could get through the lock. These are massive ships man. Dennis, what a wonderful comment. I’m happy you are enjoying the videos. Sometimes I think I’m taking too much? I try not to have a lot of dead space, kind of like a news reporter if that makes sense? All the best brother.
I assume there are some tugs to assist the actual docking?
That would be great to see.
I'm an ex USS Enterprise nuc reactor operator , so I always enjoy seeing big 'boats'.
Gonna have to look up the Edwin H. Gott to see if there is any info on the engine
rooms and propulsion. I would think these days they have thrusters as well ...
so perhaps don't require as much help from tugs.
Wow! Thank you for your service! It means a lot to me and many others. It’s people like you that served our country that allows me to make videos like this. Thank you!🙏🇺🇸
I do cover some of the tugs here in Duluth and Superior. The Kentucky and Missouri are the big workhorses here. I hope you come with me on some of these ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Beautiful scene, view/angel, lighting, and calm water. Noted 80's design, pilot house rear, high deck, boxy for the major tonnage
Great question my friend! This ship typically goes to Two Harbors to load, so I rarely get to see it. Once in a while she will fuel up in Duluth but a lot of times I miss it. It was so awesome to hear on the radio with the captain saying he’s coming into Duluth! It was a legitimate treat. I hope you’re having a great Friday. All the best.⛴️⛴️
I was born and raised in Shell Lake, Wisconsin and visited Duluth often. I am always in awe of these massive ships and love to catch the live feeds when I can. Sadly I don't know a lot about these individual ships or their significance. From the title and from your enthusiasm I would have guessed Lebron James came to town.
Ha! Each ship is like MJ or LeBron to me Mark. I hope you come with me on some of these ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Also, for some reason the green gate is open.
@@vibewithmike They may be lined up like little ducklings out there waiting to get in! It looks like there are several waiting out the storm.
Nice video
Chris, thank you so much for watching. I really hope you will join me for the next ship video! All the best friend!!!⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍
Just subscribed. Thanks man!!
Glad to have you along for the ride. We are going to have some fun with the ships this summer.
I got to see her transit the Soo locks! I even was able to reach out and touch it!
Now that is legit! Being able to touch her at the Soo Locks! Is that equivalent for Boat Nerds like us to a baseball fan being able to catch a home run at a baseball game? I hope you come with me on some of these ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Beautiful ship in a nite scene. Wonder if the Capt. was agitated about something or just to occupied? Enjoyed the video and BE SAFE OUT THERE.
It was really hoping for a loud salute but it was still cool to catch this big ship at night.
Wow! The Gott quietly slid right on in...... Nice turning shot. My first time seeing the port and starboard lighting. Is the lumination coming from the light houses? Thanks oh...
As the weather gets better are you going to vibe picnics?
Julie, I cannot wait for an outdoor picnic. We both know I can’t do those at this time! Snow, freezing, rain, cold, etc. I can’t wait to wear the T-shirt. I really hope you will join me for the next ship video! All the best friend!!!⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍
This ship is amazingly awesome! Does anyone know if any of these Particular cargo ships have a live You Tube Channel during their Long treks across the sea? Nice camera work !Thank you! 💜🙏🏻
What’s up Double! Unfortunately, I’ve looked for years, and I’ve never found a livestream on a ship. I wish they had a camera located just above the pilothouse looking out straightahead so I could watch all the time. I appreciate you watching. I hope you come with me on some of these ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Cool
Michael, I really appreciate you watching my friend. It’s awesome to have cool boat friends like you to find this interesting. Some people think we are total nerds. Thanks again brother. I hope you join me for the next upcoming ship video.👍⛴️

Ok, so I had to subscribe !!
Ha! Paul! Thank you so much man! I appreciate you. Hoping you have a good Friday night planned. Come and join me with the next ship video being uploaded tomorrow. Thanks again!
Nice. Thanks for making a quick run to get the video. I didn't see any marking for a bow thruster? She must be one of the few big ships without one?
I do think she has one but I didn’t see the circle marking either, interesting!
It’s there.
Ok, thanks for the update! Much appreciated. How’s your Thursday going? One day to Friday!
2:00 ... bow thruster mark in the grey paint ... very impressive ship ... thanks Mike. 👍👍

The Gott has the most horsepower of all the footers. Interestingly, she is home based in Duluth but seldom comes here.
Tons of power. I love the ship. It has a good look too.
Starting at 2:00 we get a good silhouetted view of the swing boom which allows line handlers to be lowered to the dock. I think that boom has a specific name, but I can't recall what it is at the moment.
Yes, it’s a huge boom I see Chuck!
You can say we got Gott!
Patrick, as it came out I was like, “um, that sounded odd, wait! That sounded cool.” 😂😂😂😂

Thanks for watching friend!
Holy Cow!!!
Catfood! That’s one of the best RUclips names ever. Original and cool, yeah, that’s a big ship my friend.⛴️⛴️⛴️
They had the old engines for sale. I bought one and put it in place of the electric engine in my Tesla. Saved money over replacing the battery.
Big Red Ed is looking good!!!!
It’s a great looking ship
What gives me a chuckle is when ships have definitely masculine names but being a ship, it is referred to as she.
Although it may sound strange referring to a ship as ‘she’, this tradition relates to the idea of a female figure such as a mother or goddess guiding and protecting a ship and crew.
New subscriber. Love watching your videos. Makes me homesick I used to watch the ships come into Milwaukee. I do have a question, what A.I.S. are you using would love to check up on my home city.
Rick! What’s up brother! Hey, I have been to the Milwaukee pier/lighthouse a few times. I enjoyed my time there. Botanas Restaurant is such a great Mexican restaurant there too. I’m so happy you found the channel and I look forwarding you to checking out the next ship with me. All the best friend!👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
I forgot to mention the app, Rick, marine traffic. It’s a blue boat for the icon.
Jean, you’re right. The Gott gets around fifteen feet from the bridge when the ship is empty I heard. Somewhat tight.
The old style ships had a pointed bow, the newer ones are much more rounded. I would think that the pointed bow has less resistance in the waves?
You know, you pose a great question here. I guess I never really looked into the old versus the new with the water resistance. The older ones seem like they move faster through the water but maybe that’s just me thinking that? I really hope you will join me for the next ship video! All the best friend!!!⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍
Is there any Bulkers that was built here on the River Clyde , Scotland , still sailing the lakes ??
I’ve been doing some research for you. Even though it’s registered out of the UK and is not sailing. This is a cool vessel. Check it out brother. greatlakes.bgsu.edu/item/439577

I did know there are also aquatic foamers. :-)
Ron, 100% brother!!! That’s us! Your RUclips logo is really cool. I like it.
Mike! Where is she headed after the pivot?
He goes to the docks about a quarter mile away to load.
She looks like she has a brand new paint job almost!
Stephen, it’s such a good looking ship. I really enjoyed seeing her in person. What a total treat. That red paint looked good. ⛴️⛴️⛴️
Yep, she is a nice looking ship but it is strange that the Captain did not give the customary salute.
I was having they would salute but no dice. Thanks so much for watching friend!!!!’
These 1000 footers are basically motorized barges.⚓⚓⚓
They are beasts out there on the lake. I agree though, essentially a motorized barge.
She`s big!
Oh yeah, massive for sure!⛴️
Question from Scotland and I hope it's not a stupid one, but why do many of the Great Lakes ships have such rounded fronts to them.
@Vibe with Mike ⚓️ thanks so much for reply. I really enjoy these videos of those massive ships - keep em coming.

Is it the captain driving this ship, or do they have pilots in Duluth harbor?
Most larger ocean going ships have pilots navigating into and out of ports in ocean ports.
The ports and harbors are far too complex with shallow areas, tides, and other underwater
stuff for a captain to navigate.
In Rotterdam, Holland the huge ships have to wait for high tide. Because some have a draft of over 75 feet. Bulk ocean going carriers are about 1,200 ft long, 210 ft wide
at over 30,000 hp and able to carry over 360,000 tons with a propeller about 30 diameter. These ocean going ships move huge amounts of iron ore from Brazil, Europe and from
Western Australia to Chins and India.
All of the regular Great Lakes ships have their own captain driving. The oceangoing ships usually have a relief pilot. It’s a hard task steering these ships.
The st lawrence Segway runs pilots
I have to get there someday. It would be awesome to see those vessels going through.
5:15 she’s using her bow thruster to make the turn
I see that now! Very cool!
The circle markings with the cross in it on the bow are stern are the thruster locations below the water line
I just learned that recently. It lets the tug know where to stay away from, correct!
Got it!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
Is there a speed limit in the canal?
I don’t know for sure. I’m guessing not because in the summer I’ve seen people with their personal boats gunning it through the canal. Good question man! I’m not 100% sure of the answer.
I can't brain today I has the dumb. So I'll let you handle the tuff questions.

Hey Mark! Yes, I believe she went over to see CN. The dock has really been busy lately. I’m sure there’s a lot of people getting overtime.
@@vibewithmike I did a bunch of work at CN
Mark, I have always wondered what it was like to work there. I’ve driven by it so many times on 35 and the big pile of ore is cool. I have a lot of respect for you and your colleagues that work outside in the brutal winter to load those ships. What was it like there?

I didn't hear the signals.
No salutes at night-guessing after 8 or 9PM you won't hear train horns either........
Totally shocked everyone…really??
Absolutely, this vessel rarely comes into Duluth and was supposed to be loading in Two Harbors. The captain came out of nowhere on the radio and said he’s coming in. Thank you for watching the video Richard. I really appreciate you man. All the best.
These captains have to know each port. The cargo and vessel are far too valuable to risk going aground or
hull damage in a port area. These captains may go into and out of Duluth port many times each sailing season.
Most of these captains know the twin ports like the back of their hand. That’s a good thing when you’re sailing something that large.
Why doesn't she come to Duluth much?
Man the bow is very round not sharp and pointed like you normally see
Hey John, good eye brother. You are right. The shape of the ship is dictated by the shape of the shipping locks. They wanted to increase cargo capacity so they made the shape of the ship exactly the size of the shipping lock so it could get through the lock. These are massive ships man. I hope you come with me on some of these ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
