The idea of the spring pole is that you are fishing whilst setting up camp, fetching wood for your fire, checking for potable water and attending to other necessities. If you put up a few of them in various places, you have a fair to reasonable chance of having a meal. I find it extremely difficult to hold pole and do all the other things at the same time. Static fishing has its place, as does every other kind. It all depends on the situation.

With those large mouth bass plus those frogs I would have went with the frogs as bait with a longer line and tied it to a larger branch still on a tree. Yes I was homeless at times and had great uncles teach me how to get food in the wild. I married a woman that grew up eating mostly wild food. We made a good couple and still together nursing each other thru old age. You're video takes me back. Thank you.
I just wanted to share my best fishing story. Fishing in a pond near sunset i was catching good sized crappie on a grasshopper lure. I caught a fish every single cast as soon as it hit the water. Lost my lure and threw in a bare hook and they were biting a bare hook and i was still catching fish nearly every cast. I caught 26 crappie in less than 30 minutes. Best fishing of my entire life in a little cow pond in OK.
Set up the spring pole first thing in the morning then spend the day fishing with the pole add any fish caught by the spring pole to your day`s catch then set the spring pole to fish overnight whilst you`re asleep....Hopefully it will catch you breakfast:)

A clinch knot, and an improved clinch knot can slip, even when tied properly with braid. I've used the improved clinch knot for decades, and it does occasionally slip. I've not had a San Diego jam knot slip on me since I've started using it a year ago.
Polomaur knot or however you spell it is the knot I’ve always went with and it’s the strongest knot you can tie and easiest to learn for beginners aswell
for a place like that, to keep from frustration. I just bring the fishing kit (lines/ hooks) & bread for bait. And let the surroundings do the job for me. If I want bream, I use wonder bread cuz they love the taste! If I want bass, I can use the bream as live bait! And catfish I can just use bread itself or cut the bream into pieces for that!
An inexpensive collapsible rod or even a very small light wait rod and reel fits perfect in a back pack and if you have room for line you will have room for it with a small box of hooks waits and even small lures in a size of a small box or even a rapped plastic bag. Never leave home without it.
I can usually carry a zebco 33 with collapsible rod and it takes little room and weight for the amount of food it can bring in.. Thanks for the view and comment!

We use a limb and line and hook to jig frogs get that hook right up under the lips and lift up quick or with a rubber jig wave had frogs try to eat them and hook theirselves..cool video I like the setup
Pro is that you can set up as many as you have hooks for. When manually fishing you can only use 1 at a time. I have a pen rod and reel and it works great. A fishing kit for me is a dual purpose in survival, food and morale.

It allows the operator to scout the fishing area for productive spots, evaluate which types of bait work best, determine fish behavior and catch fish while on the move. It's a good idea to keep track of weather and night conditions when scouting the area. If staying in area for a while, you can then use other methods to catch fish from the productive areas when you're not there, using the knowledge gained from the scout. If you have the resources and the time, you can also resort to rafting (setting shade to attract fish) or chumming. Fishing with hand line (in tight spots) or pole and also having fish/crayfish traps set is similar to hunting terrestrial and having traps set at the same time. IMO, the scout should set/build different types of suitable traps to determine which ones work for the given area and conditions. Over the long run, traps will continue to produce more food without requiring expenditure of calories, exposure to weather, or night ops. You just have to run the trap line with a reasonable schedule. If you have a light, you can check traps at night while gigging for frogs or suckers. It's also advisable to have your bow ready in case an opportunity presents itself, either waterborne or terrestrial ...

I used to use the improved clinch knot but was told that the uni knot, the surgeons loop and the palomar knot were stronger so I tried them and discovered that they are superior knots. The improved clinch knot is made stronger when you fold the line back on itself and then tie the clinch with doubled up line

Blood knots are cool. Seems like a taught line, bowline combo. Pass line thru eye 4 inches and back thru and tie the start of tying a shoe. The closed loop end pass eye, hook, lure thru loop n tighten it. Makes s double line on the eye. 🤠

It's funny you teaching those of today how to fish "survival fishing", when back when I was a kid, we couldn't afford fishing poles. Dad sprung for the fishing line and a couple lures and hooks and weights, and we went out and made poles just like you did. We rarely went home without fish to eat.

In Louisiana, they call it poor man fishing... We all carry an Altoids container somewhere in our truck that has line, a hook, a bobber or piece of cork. And that's it... You can fish anywhere, at any time, in any location... People who think that you need to have fancy gear in order to be able to eat... Are usually fishing at the supermarket...
Grasshoppers (hooked correctly so they live) are wonderful bait. Crickets also. Caught many bass and panfish from the shore at Possum Kingdom back in the day.
That's called weight to carry into the woods. He's Survival Fishing. When you have nothing, or are on the run, nature supplies it for you if you have the skill. I really need to learn this myself. I'm not big on fish but in a SHTF scenario you have to get that protein. Less calories expenditure means you don't have to eat as much.
Very helpful. I like the hand pole method. In a survival situation, I would like to have more options to fit different circumstance. I have 3 or 4 four yo-yos which I know how to use, but here is where I could really use your help. Today, my three speed hooks (spring loaded)arrived in the mail, but I am clueless as to how to use them, I have been cautioned that you must be very careful when baiting them to keep from injuring yourself. So would you consider doing another fishing segment demonstrating how to set these speed hooks. That would be really appreciated. Thanks again for another well thought out video. you can buy 6 yo yo's on Amazon for 16.00 you can pack them up use whenever you want and can walk away ,they catch them for you,can reuse whenever you want take up no room because they are flat.That makes more sense to me .
Cool. Fish are stupid for hoppers when they are about. Now if only they were out during the Spring and the first part of Summer. Still this method would work with other bait.
@@kev596 No, but I'm a dyed in the wool fly-fisher who's also interested in survival techniques. I used to teach fly-fishing and loved when Late July - early August would arrive here in the western US because the hoppers would mature then and start hopping (and attempting to fly) around. They'd off end up falling into stream. Trout (was cold-water fishing) would key in on them after a few days and then the biggest fish in the river would rise for them. Rest of the year they'd feed on nymphs on the bottom and the biggest ones would stay down there. But when the hoppers were out, they'd all jump on them. That would usually last until the first freeze in late September - great fun! I recall fishing in a spring creek where there was a fallen tree across the creek and the biggest fish in the river were feeding under that 3-foot in diameter log. You could see their tails out behind the log as they ate nymphs floating in the current. But couldn't get a fly (or any bait) to them without getting hung up. Hoppers don't land softly on the water, so I cast a hopper and slapped it on the water behind them. Two huge trout turned around and raced to the fly. Luckily, the largest trout got there first. I love fishing hoppers!
I made a few of these once and was sitting on the bank alone at about 1 or 2 am. Mine were extremely over powered and used a different trigger system, needless to say just as it got completely silent I hear this crazy whoosh, and then I see an eel flying at me! I about had a heart attack!
While you have internet, look up the prime feeding times. They have been done dates. Print them or log in the info into your journal and take it with you. I can promise that you will fill your camp with fish within that hour. Just start about 20 minutes prior to the hit time. Fish will be in a frenzy and hit anything that moves. This is not a joke. Do that all the time pit fishing or pond fishing. They'll hit again at the minor feeding time. Just not as good.
I'm not going to say I know the "Best" way, but a much better way is a Trotline. Set a couple dozen hooks and haul every 12 hours or so. This gives you a lot more time to do other tasks.
Trot lines are great, but in small ponds with perch, the perch will just nibble away all the bait in a few minutes. Thanks for watching and commenting!
A yo-yo auto reel and a stick with a deep Y at the end..... survival challenge.. I've done it... Put 9 of these out along a shore line with any kind of natural bait.... constant food supply man...
i noticed the breeze caused the water surface to make waves towards shore. thats not a good time to use a float if your planning on walking away. that bait woulve been on shore in minutes. Better off w/o a float under these conditions.
Needed to kill about thirty of them around that part of the lake. Trees prohibit grass growth, which protects the bank from erosion and prevents dam failure. Over time they will overtake the shore and prevent access to water and grass growth. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I've never fished in my life, but if it is as easy as this, forget going to the fish market. I want to know where this pond is. It takes one second for him to throw a line in and catch a fish. WOW! The only time I have seen fishing is in the movies, and you always see someone fishing by the water and sometimes waiting all day to catch a fish.
Finally someone who admits it's often better to just fish instead of playing with sticks. If you're truly survival fishing (fishing for food to survive), you're going to sit there and catch fish. Hell, as you showed, you could catch two or three fish (ready to start cooking) in the length of time it takes to make and rig that stuff.
@@MichaelSmith-ku7ki .. Perhaps so, but it's still not the most efficient way of fishing. If it were, everybody would be doing it. A pole/rod lets you try different spots to find the fish and then offers the most effective way of catching them.

For survival purposes it would have been better to show what you do when you don't have fishing line. We can build poles all day with sticks.... but the line is key. What to do when we have none?
It's illegal to do right now...mostly everywhere, but mullein seed. That is the best. It knocks the fish out i have heard. Just have to be careful even in a survival situatuon not to over fish one spot
The whole pole fishing thing doesn't convince me, although it might have its usefulness, a fish is way more efficient, and can be built just as easily with materials from mother nature... Using metal hooks with barbs is the best thing if going for active fishing, can't go wrong with metal hooks, you don't even need a fishing rod and any cordage will do. The real challenge would be the correct design and use of self made hooks 😊. Rate of success catching your fish will be lower than with metal hooks, but the experience will be more gratifying knowing you did it all by yourself, with nothing and completely from scratch...
Guess it's just me...an old guy who grew up not that far from Memphis, TN (and the Mississippi River), but a Trotline is BY FAR, the ABSOLUTE BEST way to 'survive' by fishing (without expending a lot of energy). Simply run a mason line (or 'Cathoula Tarred Line') across the creek, river, lake end, whatever...and every 4-8 feet, run a 2-ft mono line (tied to the tarred line with a prussic knot) as a leader...bait, then 'run the line' (walk it, float it, whatever) and take your fish off. I've caught 500 pounds of catfish in a single day...not that big of a deal, and no 'automatic fishing pole' (or tree line, or whatever) is going to compare...learn how to set up a Trotline, and forget all this other complex trash...it's already hard enough getting enough food (calorie-wise) from fish, to make fishing 'survival worthy'...last thing you want to do is work your tail off rigging spring snares to MAYBE catch ONE fish...when you run a trotline, bait it, and then simply walk-and-check-it once every 8-hours or so...
Wait, how in the hell am I supposed to get some survival fish unless you first show me where to fuel up the twin Yamahas on my Ranger Bass boat, a boat ramp to drop her in, and a bait shop for some shiners ?

Also less time spent if readily caught. By the time a passive way is devised and created it is possible to catch half a dozen by using the active method. Poles, snares, nets, traps...its all situational.

you can buy 6 yo yo's on Amazon for 16.00 you can pack them up use whenever you want and can walk away ,they catch them for you,can reuse whenever you want take up no room because they are flat.That makes more sense to me .

Cool. Fish are stupid for hoppers when they are about. Now if only they were out during the Spring and the first part of Summer. Still this method would work with other bait.

@@kev596 No, but I'm a dyed in the wool fly-fisher who's also interested in survival techniques. I used to teach fly-fishing and loved when Late July - early August would arrive here in the western US because the hoppers would mature then and start hopping (and attempting to fly) around. They'd off end up falling into stream. Trout (was cold-water fishing) would key in on them after a few days and then the biggest fish in the river would rise for them. Rest of the year they'd feed on nymphs on the bottom and the biggest ones would stay down there. But when the hoppers were out, they'd all jump on them. That would usually last until the first freeze in late September - great fun!
I recall fishing in a spring creek where there was a fallen tree across the creek and the biggest fish in the river were feeding under that 3-foot in diameter log. You could see their tails out behind the log as they ate nymphs floating in the current. But couldn't get a fly (or any bait) to them without getting hung up. Hoppers don't land softly on the water, so I cast a hopper and slapped it on the water behind them. Two huge trout turned around and raced to the fly. Luckily, the largest trout got there first.

I made a few of these once and was sitting on the bank alone at about 1 or 2 am. Mine were extremely over powered and used a different trigger system, needless to say just as it got completely silent I hear this crazy whoosh, and then I see an eel flying at me! I about had a heart attack!

While you have internet, look up the prime feeding times. They have been done dates. Print them or log in the info into your journal and take it with you. I can promise that you will fill your camp with fish within that hour. Just start about 20 minutes prior to the hit time. Fish will be in a frenzy and hit anything that moves. This is not a joke. Do that all the time pit fishing or pond fishing. They'll hit again at the minor feeding time. Just not as good.
I'm not going to say I know the "Best" way, but a much better way is a Trotline. Set a couple dozen hooks and haul every 12 hours or so. This gives you a lot more time to do other tasks.
Trot lines are great, but in small ponds with perch, the perch will just nibble away all the bait in a few minutes. Thanks for watching and commenting!

A yo-yo auto reel and a stick with a deep Y at the end..... survival challenge.. I've done it... Put 9 of these out along a shore line with any kind of natural bait.... constant food supply man...

i noticed the breeze caused the water surface to make waves towards shore. thats not a good time to use a float if your planning on walking away. that bait woulve been on shore in minutes. Better off w/o a float under these conditions.

Needed to kill about thirty of them around that part of the lake. Trees prohibit grass growth, which protects the bank from erosion and prevents dam failure. Over time they will overtake the shore and prevent access to water and grass growth. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I've never fished in my life, but if it is as easy as this, forget going to the fish market. I want to know where this pond is. It takes one second for him to throw a line in and catch a fish. WOW! The only time I have seen fishing is in the movies, and you always see someone fishing by the water and sometimes waiting all day to catch a fish.
That pond has more fish than half of the ones I fished last year.lol

Finally someone who admits it's often better to just fish instead of playing with sticks. If you're truly survival fishing (fishing for food to survive), you're going to sit there and catch fish. Hell, as you showed, you could catch two or three fish (ready to start cooking) in the length of time it takes to make and rig that stuff.

@@MichaelSmith-ku7ki .. Perhaps so, but it's still not the most efficient way of fishing. If it were, everybody would be doing it. A pole/rod lets you try different spots to find the fish and then offers the most effective way of catching them.

It's illegal to do right now...mostly everywhere, but mullein seed. That is the best. It knocks the fish out i have heard. Just have to be careful even in a survival situatuon not to over fish one spot

The whole pole fishing thing doesn't convince me, although it might have its usefulness, a fish is way more efficient, and can be built just as easily with materials from mother nature... Using metal hooks with barbs is the best thing if going for active fishing, can't go wrong with metal hooks, you don't even need a fishing rod and any cordage will do. The real challenge would be the correct design and use of self made hooks 😊. Rate of success catching your fish will be lower than with metal hooks, but the experience will be more gratifying knowing you did it all by yourself, with nothing and completely from scratch...
Guess it's just me...an old guy who grew up not that far from Memphis, TN (and the Mississippi River), but a Trotline is BY FAR, the ABSOLUTE BEST way to 'survive' by fishing (without expending a lot of energy). Simply run a mason line (or 'Cathoula Tarred Line') across the creek, river, lake end, whatever...and every 4-8 feet, run a 2-ft mono line (tied to the tarred line with a prussic knot) as a leader...bait, then 'run the line' (walk it, float it, whatever) and take your fish off. I've caught 500 pounds of catfish in a single day...not that big of a deal, and no 'automatic fishing pole' (or tree line, or whatever) is going to compare...learn how to set up a Trotline, and forget all this other complex trash...it's already hard enough getting enough food (calorie-wise) from fish, to make fishing 'survival worthy'...last thing you want to do is work your tail off rigging spring snares to MAYBE catch ONE fish...when you run a trotline, bait it, and then simply walk-and-check-it once every 8-hours or so...

@@lolllllll Correct about energy spent, but it can mean less energy spent if you catch fish readily by simply tying the line to a stick and tossing in the water, then pulling them out. Also less time spent if readily caught. By the time a passive way is devised and created it is possible to catch half a dozen by using the active method. Poles, snares, nets, traps...its all situational.
