I live in the north Yukon I will go to very small creek and cache tree grayling and many of my children’s did it also very small but dally food and small fish are the best I did this type of fishing for grayling a small willow bend on the creek a small line and a fly that just touch the water the courants pull the fly tree feet about and come back and float tree feet again grayling can not resist 6 to 8 inch for me that good
Hey Shawn, what about doing something on an area that might be cemented? I have an old Bridge truss nearby that all sorts of folks try active fishing from, but never saw anyone trying to do what you did by making some kind of "auto hooker". I think there may be grass you could set something into but your fighting the height of the weeds right next door to the riverbank, plus, it's too shallow that no fish would go up that close. What could you do to set a "auto hooker" up on something you can't really drive stakes into & still have it work? ( This would include any stakes to keep a pole in place?) PS - what about casting with a "auto hook" styled thing? I'd imagine that you cast it 1st, then set up the L 7 situation to snag a fish ( hopefully? Around me, you have the "elusive lakeweed" or "waterlogged stick fish", both probably wouldn't be good eating!
Best hook for passive fishing, circle recurve hook! When using small hooks learn how to make a carp fisherman's "hair rig". If fishing actively, j hooks, short and long shanked, and octopus style hooks. As for what to hang of the back of a lure, trebles if you're allowed, or wide gap singles.
Pan fish are actually one of my favorites. When you clean them they are still bait. People who complain about "bait fish" have never been truly hungry.
Corp, we eat sun “pan” fish all the time. Food is food. Cutting the tail off is great, probably not going to be eating that or the guts. Use them for bait. This reminds me of your videos from years back, I miss those days, when you were doing the videos that you wanted to or felt was necessary to teach. Thank you for all you do. Semper fi, now let’s go make the grass grow.
In my humble opinion I don't think that it gets any better than the passive fishing that you just demonstrated. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge and wisdom.
Passive fishing and trapping is the most efficient way to use calories gathering food. Thank you for demonstrating a reliable passive fishing pole. Set 3 or 4 of those along a stream or pond and you'll be eating in no time 👍
I know you've shown this before, but it always looks fantastic when the whip sets. And most importantly for me, if this is going to be a series could you please show us how to set up a trott line. I've seen William Collins retrieving his catch, but I want to see the intricacies of the set up.
Outstanding. I will check to see if it's allowed where i go but, the next time I'm kayak fishing I am going to do this on the bank of the lake while I stop for lunch.
Great video Shawn. It shows the simplicity of being able to start the process of gathering food while also attending to other necessary tasks around camp. The fact that it took little time and little to no tools in the construction is a huge bonus. Thank you.
One could just use the guts of the sunfish for bait, and still keep the fish for food. Catfish are not picky. Good Video, I enjoy watching your content.
Shawn, this is a great topic that's relevant to the times! People who aren't prepared are going to struggle! This will work until fished/hunted out! Great skills to know!
I slept outdoors for 5 or 6 months in Arizona. Had to use metal tent stakes out here, so now after watching your tent stake instructions, I've decided to keep one big long nail and the rest abs plastic. The big nail will be used as a drill to prevent damage to my plastic stakes.
Excellent! With passive fishing, a meal is being gathered one fish at a time; & you can be actually fishing yourself while the spring pole is working for you. One word of CAUTION: Check your local Game & Fish laws; they vary from one state to another!
Very neat and informative. Totally agree on keeping it simple. Can I start a fire using a bow drill? Yes. Maybe. It's difficult and time consuming. A fero rod works a lot better, and a bic lighter works even better.
Great tutorial Corp. couple o’ baitfish or empty belly, not really much of a decision to make there. The 4 stick pole holder was really great info. Again I’m a learning stuff. Hopefully I’ll never need to use it but very happy you taught it and now it’s another tool in my toolbox. Thanks for these “Tips and Tricks” videos they really are useful info. As always stay frosty AF. 👍
mission accomplished! I learned something today, right here. Thank you. I can imagine cleaning that fish, using a piece of it for bait to catch another while cooking the rest of him over a fire right there on the creek bank. Good job, Corporal Kelly.
Yep,Iike you said Shawn, it's a numbers game... 5 to 10 spring poles is as good as that many guys fishing actively, and you can do other things or take a siesta!
one of the things you could go over is how to "call worms" (they call it the worm gitter stick) kinda cool .. basically its a decent size dry stick that has some crescents carved out of it.. you put one end in the soft leafy dirt, and run another stick up and down the side.. causing a drumming/vibration .. this causes worms to come to the surface.
You probably weren’t even conscious of it, but I so appreciate that you kept the mask on the hatchet/axe when driving stakes. That is such a good practice. I mostly solo when in the forest, and safety is paramount. I always keep the mask on my small (Husqvarna) axe when I am using it as a hammer; why take the risk of an injury? The rest of the video was, of course, also informative, but the safe-practice example was an added bonus. Be safe, and enjoy the forest. Thank you.
I have often wondered why people starve in the woods near a pond or stream. If you know how to fish you eat. Excellent video. Thank you Shawn for showing the simplicity of getting it done.. OORAH
Ate quite a few sunfish in my childhood days. A fish is a fish, and a fish is food! Granted, sunfish suck for eating, as there are a LOT of bones to pick out. But the meat actually tastes pretty good!
My version of passive fishing, find a nice spot, bait your hook, cast it out, lay back on the bank, put the pole in the crook of your arm, take a good book and open it up, put it over your eyes and read through osmosis. The only way to spend a afternoon. 😊😊
Hey Shawn, i love the videos man, i've been taking what i learn from your videos and putting it into practice around my cabin and i really urge people to try and retain even 10% of what you talk about, it's so helpful out in the field, whether it's out harvesting firewood, setting traps, fishing or building shelter, i constantly find myself far off the beaten path with my job and I have found so much of your tips, tricks and instruction to be so helpful, it's even saved my life a couple times. Thank you Corporal Kelly, Semper Fi
We call them Panfish, and for good reason. They are delicious and I'd never turn down a chance to enjoy some, especially breaded and deep-fried. Yeah you have to deal with some bones but the flavor is well worth the trouble. I wonder how many of the "baitfish" commenters have actually eaten any.

Been my favorite show on RUclips for many years thanks for all your determination and dedication to the show and teaching people I appreciate you.
I’ve eaten sunfish, blue gill, and crappie. They’re all delicious. No shame in eating whatever you catch.
Love blue gill and sun fish great eating
I think the most impressive thing about this is just how simple it is. Saves time, saves calories, provides food. This is awesome, thanks for sharing.
I’ve had some pretty good meals from panfish. Great video. Essentially you can catch dinner while you set up the rest of your camp! Thanks!
Blue gills were put on this world for small children and grandpa’s !!!!!! Very good eating !
I've eaten many sunfish in my lifetime. A fish is a fish.. Great video sir. See ya Sunday
Heard today that a 15 year old girl in Ohio caught a record 101lb Blue Catfish from Jug fishing .

More of this kind of adventures please. Cheers mate from Australia.

In my humble opinion I don't think that it gets any better than the passive fishing that you just demonstrated. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge and wisdom.
Here in south GA. We eat pan fish all the time. They are delicious.
I am not a camper or differently not bush crafty. However I ❤ the knots and you're always teaching!
One of the first things I purchased when I started bushcrafting was automatic reels and they work great as snares too.
Passive fishing and trapping is the most efficient way to use calories gathering food. Thank you for demonstrating a reliable passive fishing pole. Set 3 or 4 of those along a stream or pond and you'll be eating in no time 👍
Mr,Kelly. You are a very strong man!! 💪. And very talented. We all appreciate you!! Keep up the great work!
I'm not a fan of the smaller fish either, but I am a fan of eating. Great video.
Hello my friend I'm a bushcrafter too! You have a very good audience! Hugs to everyone .🧡.

We used do that when we were kids except we ate the bluegill..Good Job it was nice to see a blast from the past..Good Video
Beautiful. Kids would LOVE to do this. Thank you for sharing.
The 4 stakes to hold the pole was a great idea.
Definitely learned something today. Love it when you show how something is done.
That is a good item to store in the back of the mind for sure. Great video
Once again, outstanding AF with another informative useful video. Keep up the good work.
I LOVE perch, Bream, sunfish, whatever you want to call it! Great white meat. Love them with hushpuppies!
I appreciate your drive for teaching skills!

Hey it fits in the pan. If your trying to survive or its an emergency or just trying to get fish, this system works. Great video!
Very neat and informative. Totally agree on keeping it simple. Can I start a fire using a bow drill? Yes. Maybe. It's difficult and time consuming. A fero rod works a lot better, and a bic lighter works even better.
I like this idea. Definitely agree, small fish are sweet
A smile on my face, every time i see you upload a survival fishing video ,need more of this stuff!!! Great work!!!
I have a book with survival stuff including this fish trap and few others. Videos always help to see better, as pictures and photos stand still.

Another great video. It's great to show that no carving was needed for the snare

I bet many a shipwrecked sailor would have been glad to know tricks like this
Same trigger system I use on my bent sapling snare for small game
Thanks for the video!
See you Sunday!
Have a great week!
Pretty cool fish snare. Interesting and something to think about even use on small game. Great video!
I love this type of content. Thank you for posting.
Sunfish tastes better than catfish anyway. Delish!
I like them both.
Thanks Shawn, I like to see fishing in survival situations. Keep up the great work.
I feel like I was in a master class! Great and informative and useful video. Thank you!
I grew up poor in rural Oklahoma. I have ate many bluegill and sunfish. Good eating if bony.
Skills. Reminds me of fishing in local creeks and ponds when I was a kid.
Best AFK fish farm I’ve seen yet! That looks like more fun than using a pole.
You probably weren’t even conscious of it, but I so appreciate that you kept the mask on the hatchet/axe when driving stakes. That is such a good practice. As a fisherman myself, this is the coolest midweek video so far. Greetings from Belgium. Keep up the good work sir.
I been a while but blue gills were good eating fish.
I have often wondered why people starve in the woods near a pond or stream. If you know how to fish you eat.
Excellent video.

Very cool and it makes sense in a survival situation
There's common sense... and there's stupidity..... Very well said 🫡👍

I appreciate you Corporal thank you 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Dude, I've ate my weight with those sun fish when I was a kid! They actually taste good!!! Great video man!!!
Hi,👋
This is a very interesting lesson.
Thanks for sharing and teaching it in an easy to understand way 🌎
We call them Panfish, and for good reason. They are delicious and I'd never turn down a chance to enjoy some, especially breaded and deep-fried. Yeah you have to deal with some bones but the flavor is well worth the trouble. I wonder how many of the "baitfish" commenters have actually eaten any.
Thanks, Corporal! Can't wait to see the fish trap. Several of these poles might be more productive than the fish trap.
Great video! I’ll be happy with the bait fish. It’s better than starving. You get what you get and don’t throw a fit.
As always.. this Aussie loves your work!
Great mid-week video. Work smarter, not harder! Passive fishing is doing the work for you. Strong instruction
Excellent technique. This channel is amazing.
Excellent tutorial!
Professor status: unlocked
😊
Thanks for sharing!
Great info and nice demo! Yummy eating!!
Great video. I'm getting ready to stock my lake and sunfish / blue gill are in the order. Thank for showing the double L system.
Love this training video! The one I was hoping for ....among others!!
Same....video like these are underrated, especially with the explanations behind the decisions
most will miss
@@recall5811 Most, maybe. But not us!
Awesome tips, I've eaten more pan sized bream in my lifetime then fish over 3 pounds.
DEEP FRIED WHOLE IN BUTTER . GREAT SPRINGPOLE TRAP , LOVE MY YO YO'S .😁😁😁
I love this stuff. Thanks Corporal. Great info!
To those people... blue gill taste fking delicious! Thanks for another informative video!!
If you fix em right...
I like the idea of passive fishing & It definitely is a force multiplier in a long term survival scenario. Great video

Good information. I wish more people would watch and know how to survive out in the wilderness. See you on Sunday!
Good shit Marine, keep doing what you're doing. We love your content. Thank you
Hey Shawn, nice demonstration and build for snare or a automatic fishing pole. Very informative and thank you for sharing…🇺🇸
Another great video, thanks for all you do.
Another killer video as always
Good job, because you provide good, realistic info for a survival situation; you keep it real! Always a great video! Never let up!!!
