Here's a follow up review after a fair bit of ride time with the new helmet. Before I dive into the pros and cons I want to remind anyone reading this that I'm only able to compare the Explorer against my previous helmet the LS2 Pioneer. I don't have any knowledge on other lids unfortunately. At the end of the day I'm comparing an old $200 lid to a new $300 lid.
I'll start by saying my initial though that the helmet will break in and fit a bit more comfortably was wrong. If your on the fence on sizing then order the next size up. After 250 miles in the medium size I had a pretty bad hot spot on my forehead by the end of that day. That's obviously not a fault of the helmet, but a medium from one LS2 helmet may not mean a medium in this one. I've since "gifted" the medium to my wife and received a large replacement.
My immediate takeaway after getting up to speed was just how much quieter this helmet is, they did a bang up job at reducing road and particularly wind noise compared to the Pioneer. I was perfectly fine doing 70mph on a KLR650 in this lid. My ears would've been bleeding doing the same ride in the Pioneer. A+ improvement.
Ventilation is hard topic for me to cover. I'd say it's comparable to the Pioneer. With all the vents open during my ride in the 93 degree heat that day I never once felt hot. The top of my head never got clammy so I'm assuming the forehead vents and chimneys are doing their job. But with my limited ADV helmet experience my opinion level of "acceptable ventilation" may be vastly higher than others. But from my standpoint it was perfectly fine and never left me wishing for more airflow. You're mileage may very though.
The peak actually has more than two small adjustment. I discovered this after receiving the replacement helmet. There is a small adjustment screw under a cover at the top of the lid. It allows for more adjustment up and down than what is shown in the video. Also the wind resistance of the peak is greatly improved over the Pioneer. I don't have any desire to attempt to remove the peak so my apologies for not being able to answer removal questions. I assume it is, but don't know for sure.
The visor latch is kind of unnecessary. I don't particularly like it, it's not a deal breaker but it feels like a pointless extra step to take in order to open it.
Chin strap is more comfortable to wear compared to the Pioneer. But I would've preferred D-rings. Trying to slide a thin metal tab into a clasps that's covered with soft material is hit or miss. Will probably get easier with time though.
Comms, they fit! Hallelujah. Packtalk Bold wired up nicely. Speakers sit in the pockets near the chin strap holes and don't rub on my Dumbo ears. Ended up using the 3M tape backing plate to mount it, wire routing was fairly painless. Reinstalling the cheek pads was a little tedious though, take your time doing it. Mounting location for the comm is a little more forward on the helmet than I would've preferred, but it's kind of necessary in order to clear the sunscreen mechanism.
Sun visor works very well. The action is buttery smooth and in my case it drops down far enough to not cause any vision issues/odd lense cutoffs.
Viability is a mixed bag. Normal riding it's fine. Wide panorama for a budget helmet. Downward viability however is a bit off though. There is a rubbery black bit inside of the helmet that comes up off the chin bar. I'm assuming it's some sort of breath guard to help with fogging up. It performs that task well but prevents some downward vision. I can live with it, but I'd prefer it not to be there. I caught myself lowering my head to look at my instruments more than once. Maybe it's my riding position but I didn't have this issue with the Pioneer.
All in all I'm happy with my decision to pick it up. Is it perfect? No. But the small issues I've mentioned are easy enough to overlook. It's a huge improvement over my old helmet and my wife loves the medium I handed down to her over the old GMax lid she was using previously. Safe riding guy and gals. I'll try to check back on here and answer any questions individually when I can.

Awesome review, I too am using the old pioneer style, looking forward to having less noise in my Motovlog videos, I've tried everything to quiet it down on the highway but its just too loud, hopefully this will help!! Checkout my channel if you are interested in the noise, my last two videos have the mic buried up near my nose and have the fuzzy on the mic but its still very noisy...

Got it in carbon. Better quality than Nolan where gap between seal and visor is up to 1mm. Here all is thigt, well made, quaieter than Nolan N87. Runs slightly smaller, my head is 59.5, got XL and is perfect. Measured Pioneer in Large and was well too thight, XL was way too loose. If you have 60cm size I would go for XL in Explorer.

    Hey guys,
In India, there is the explorer fibreglass helmet, but with double d rings. The indian version is 1460+-50. The European version with the steel micrometric is 1550+-50. Is the weight difference due to the micrometric, or is it due to maybe less protection in Indian version? The indian version models as of now are ECE2205 and the European ECE2206.
Please note I am talking about fibreglass version.
    Thank You!

  • @williamb.6918

Same as the others I will be curious to see what you think after you get some miles on it it. Road noise, ventilation (forehead specifically as most manufacturers seem to miss the boat on that and many bikes actively vent primarily in the forehead area due to windscreen height and/or angle). I have owned most of the ADV helmets at this point except for the Shoei which I avoided due to weight and ventilation. Ideally am looking for something that vents more like the XD4 (which is still my favorite ADV helmet by far but it just does not fit my head).

Followup review in the comments. I can't say for sure if this helmet vents better than higher priced ones. But I found it acceptable.

@@SophiFike I did end up buying the Explorer in Carbon. Unfortunately it is not a fit for my head (funny since the old Pioneer was not too bad). Based on the riding I did with the Explorer I can say it does vent better than most of the helmets in the category (although not as well as the Arai XD4 which is the gold standard for ventilation in the ADV class).

@@williamb.6918 what issue did you find with the fit? Does it run larger, or smaller than the specs? Or is it something else?

    • @williamb.6918
      @williamb.6918 3 года назад +1

@@airadaimagery692 Not really that it runs smaller, just tight in the forehead. That is a fairly common problem area for some helmets (Arai and Bell for instance can be a bit more prone to this than some others). Essentially I can feel pressure and see fairly deep indents on my forehead after wearing the Explorer Carbon for even a fairly short amount of time. Moving to the next size up typically ends in a comically large helmet (Bell for instance). Some vendors tell you they will break in, but that is never an issue I have found to be addressed by breaking in even over thousands of miles with various helmets and brands. I have not found playing musical pads to help much with this either. I have spent a fortune trying to address it in this way with Arai's and a bit less with Bell's and never did end up with a suitable solution. Shoei's usually have a bit more room and modern AGV's often have more room and hefty padding which tends to compensate to some degree.

@@stephenlebillon3066 - Thank you for the info. I'm beyond pissed, because there is NO user manual with instructions, no useful tutorials at the LS2 website, they clearly indicate the 'quick release' feature for the visor which is complete bull, and no video instructions anywhere about the visor removal either! :( But the first thing most people do is try and install the pinlock insert and THEN comes the question of just 'how to remove the visor and where is the quick release???' It's beyond irritating, and the fact they use this "take it apart and re-assemble" solution on a brand new model is pathetic! NOBODY does this! :( Thanks anyways, I'll try, but honestly I'm worried about damaging this POS helmet that I was so excited to get, but now I have full buyer's regret, and I will make a video about it to warn others as well, and then I'll send it to LS2 with my personal recommendations about where they can shove it and what to do with this POS! :(
