I just turned 50. The thing I remember is that everyone had the Cover Girl powder in a brown compact. And the Maybelline Great Lash mascara in the pink/green tube!

I love you! Let me preface this by saying...I am from Brooklyn. When I was a freshman in high school (1984, I was 12 until the end of September), everyone wore that concealer stick as lipstick with one of those red eyebrow pencils in brown as lip liner. I tried it the first week of school and it looked awful on my very fair skin. My grandmother was a vaudeville and broadway actress when she was young. She was made over by Max Factor himself when she was young. She knew contouring and bronzing (she called it shading) from being on the stage. She took makeup very seriously and she was stunning! She also hated that lip combo. For each of her granddaughters, for your 13th birthday, she made an appointment at Merle Norman to have the makeup artist there teach you how to take care of your skin and put on makeup for your coloring and face shape and she bought you all the skin care and makeup the lady used on you. I remember it costing well over $250 even back then. I still remember the things that lady taught me about MY eye shape and MY face shape and so on. I hear her vocie and my grandmother's vocie in my head as I do my brows and line my lips and I never followed trends except colors. I survived the 90's without making my brows super thin and I never contoured my nose. I always do what looks best on me. I enjoy your channel so much and I am certain my grandmother would have loved you. Be well!

Showing my age here! Haha. I'm 58. I grew up playing and learning with my mama's Avon makeup. She actually had an Avon lady come to our house every week! As I got older I used ponds cold cream at night to wash my face then noxzema in the mornings. When I got my own job later I only used cover girl clean makeup, concealer that I thought went on first, and yes that stick kind. Shimmering sands on my eyes, no liner, cover girl blush and lipstick then Maybelline great lash mascara. Then come the 90s and mama bought Bare Minerals everything off QVC. She had me on the autoship even!! After she died in 2005 I couldn't afford that myself so I switched to loreal true match. I used that for a very long time! Honestly I'd say it wasn't till maybe 10 years ago, with RUclips's help that I tried different stuff. Now I have more than I can ever use up. Oh!! And mama always said ladies don't ever leave the house without your lipstick on!!! Dang I miss my mama.

PS I still use those red wooden eyebrow pencils by Maybelline! They're hard enough to last in the car or my purse without melting or chipping, and they still need to be sharpened Everytime you use them. But they must be selling ok, they're still making them! $2.99 for two on a card, and you can get them at every grocery store in town! And, as I recently discovered, they're creamy-waxy enough to write a nastygram on the car window of a rude driver who parked sloppy! I'm keeping all the little stubs, I'll stash them in every vehicle I own!

  • @redannie86

We did that in Middle School too! Sometimes it would be so hot, you'd get a blob on your waterline! I'm sure that heat wasn't good for that sensitive area, but it worked! I never line my waterline anymore...it closes in my already small eyes...I prefer to smudge a light-med shade of eyeshadow underneath the eye - a much softer look! Oh the evolution of makeup and us!

I used baby powder or "translucent" too, but I'm still the palest of the pale lol. I never wore foundation as there were none pale enough. Rimmel hide the blemish concealer wasn't a great match, but I guess it hid some of the redness of a pimple - it was so obvious on me though lol due to being far off in shade. It was the palest available in a more affordable brand at the time though.

I was just thinking this morning about how I’d watch my grandmother do her makeup when I was there and I distinctly remember her using those old cover girl blushes but in like one swipe across the cheek (with the included applicator), but no blend! I thought “why are people interested in looking like that?” Now that I’m older, I understand the skill levels and styles, but it just makes me giggle thinking about it. And “old school” makeup brings up those memories ❤️

I remember watching my mum put makeup on and being fascinated as a child. Watching all the steps and seeing the end results. It was so entrancing to me. And I developed an addiction to makeup from there lol. My most loved product is eyeshadow. I remember my mum used Maybelline Great Lash and some Max Factor products and some Cover Girl too. I now only buy cruelty free cosmetics and skin care and was so thrilled when Cover Girl went cruelty free. I wish every line would follow suit and think more and more old school cosmetics will eventually take the plunge. Oceans of love Miss Emily!

When L’oréal goes cruelty free, you’ll understand there’s been a major change in the cosmetic industry, because in reality they own (aka are the parent company!) of 80 percent plus of the world’s cosmetic market! That means … it doesn’t matter what brand name they’re marketing under (high and low ends) … it’s still ALL L’oréal labs produced!

When I was in high school (1978- 1982) I would wear these AMAZING Revlon eyeshadows. They came as singles, in white packaging. I wore Deepglow Amethyst, Deepglow Copper, and Deepglow Topaz. What they did for my green eyes....was nothing short of magic. I went to school all my life with blonde, blue eyed girls whose hair feathered and who got beautifully tanned and looked so cool when they used Sun In on their hair....I on the other hand, had naturally curly (that would frizz up in rain/snow) wouldn't feather, pale skin that never tanned, only burned (I'm a redhead) but those eyeshadows....they leveled the playing field a bit. I also used Aziza liquid eyeshadow, which Dollar Tree carried for a while. When I worked in the cosmetic department at Osco Drug during high school, Max Factor pan stick makeup was it (you can still order it online) and yes, we all wore Cover Girl clean makeup and the powder (we washed our faces with Noxema, and used Sea Breeze astringent too lol) thanks for bringing me back.

We all LOVED Twiggy and I remember drawing on lower lashes like she did. I don't think we used pencils, they wouldn't have been dark enough. It must have been some sort of black liquid eyeliner. My mom had a small powder mascara pan to which she would add a drop or two of water, mix it up, then apply it with the worst little brush ever. She wore Max Factor pancake makeup, removing it with Pond's cold cream every night without fail.

I absolutely love the Loreal Voluminous. That has been a go to since I was in high school, after my Maybelline Great Lash phase of course! I still use it today, adding the Essence Princess mascara with it. Cover Girl Shimmering Sands and Country Woods? I think was my favorite eyeshadow as well. I actually made my daughter a beginner makeup bag with most of these products that I started with.

I miss going to Walmart and buying JANE makeup. And then one time my grandma took me to the mall (may company maybe??) and I got a makeover at the Ultima II counter and I felt so fancy, like a movie star.

OMG! Yes! I was a huge Jane & Ultima II fan as well! I had their long-wear lipsticks before Revlon came out with them (same parent company, I think). After Jane disappeared, I really loved N.Y.C. and I continue to love Wet n’ Wild since back then.

@@AngiePerezTV I miss N.Y.C.! They had an awesome lipgloss. It seemed like one day there were full displays at our stores then….poof! Gone everywhere.

@@carriesalow6745 Around 1990, I wanted a plain, matte black eyeshadow to use as a liner. I looked high and low…and finally found it at the Ultima II counter. It was a little higher than my budget at the time, but I loved it. A special memory!

Q & A What’s in all the drawers behind you? I’d like to see your collection and how you declutter especially how it relates to the expiration of products. Do you ever think about what you want your future to look like? If so, what steps do you take to make it a reality? Also, I would love to hear you speak more about your faith. Thank you for being such a bright spot in so many people’s lives, mine included!

That blush is the first makeup I ever got. I don't think I was yet a teen. My mom and I were grocery shopping at P&C and I remember just looking at the makeup display while she shopped, I asked if I could have that blush and she said yes! I might have to go find that for nostalgia and use it of course!

Yes on the Q&A. In the 70's I used a blue cream eyeshadow, I think from maybelline. It was in a pot with a flower on top.

I buy a new tube of L’Oréal Voluminous mascara in blue EVERY SINGLE SUMMER! Now that’s a blue mascara that REALLY shows up! I love that mascara!💙 Especially when I pair it w/a red-burgundy liner on the lid. It gives such a pretty & unique effect that you’d have to see or try yourself. The 2 separate colors create this purple effect but the colors never physically blend. It’s hard to describe. But I get so many compliments or questions about what I have on my eyes. It’s so pretty.especially once I’m tan. I hope L’Oréal never d/c’s that mascara! 💙

What always stands out to me is the difference in how we put on our make up, and just how bad we fumbled through the learning process versus today with all tutorials. I remember using my hand for foundation and finders for eyeshadow, and when the eyeliner didn’t behave out came the lighter. I never knew exactly what it did but an older friend showed me that trick and to be sure my make up didn’t just stop at my chin line.

My go-to foundation in the 80s was L'Oreal Visuelle, it came in a square frosted glass bottle. L'Oreal always seemed upscale to me in the drug store because of the packaging and the French names for products. That being said, I also rocked a frosted light blue eyeliner from Wet N Wild, too! Such a fun video, Emily! ❤️

Yes! I always felt fancier when I wore something from L’Oréal instead of my usual Maybelline or Cover Girl. L’Oreal also had some really pretty nail polish colors…lots of them had a beautiful blue shift. Ah, memories.

The Coty airspun looks beautiful if you put it on moisturized skin with just a little concealer where needed. It only adds texture with a whole lot of stuff on your skin. I don't think it works as well when you wear foundation.
